Repair damaged jpg photos. Here's how we help you

The digital camera has long passed from the category of complex technical devices into a group of simple and understandable everyday things. To cope with it today is within the power of a child. Alas, the ease of management does not protect us from accidental loss of photos - it's so easy to click "Delete all photos" instead of "Delete photo". Three letters, what's the difference!

However, photo recovery programs come to our aid here. Precisely photographs, because although "pictures" are just files stored on magnetic media, they have some features.

Firstly, a photo recovery program should be simple and convenient, understandable even to “blondes”, because a camera is a household device. You don't need to graduate from University just to take a picture. The interface of the photo recovery program should also not frighten a person who has not received special education.

Secondly, it is desirable to know what we are restoring. Unlike data on a hard drive, where files are usually named according to a "mnemonic" principle and one can roughly judge its contents by the file name, photo files in the camera are numbered with meaningless numbers. It is desirable to be able preview pictures.

Thirdly, some photo formats are quite complex and it would be nice if the recovery program “understood” the structure of the file, trying to “intelligently” restore the lost parts.

Well, and fourthly, the recovery program should be free. After all, you don't plan to "accidentally" format your memory card once a month, do you? And for a one-time use of the program, a fee of several tens of dollars does not always pay off.

Having formulated these four principles, I decided to search the Web for ten free programs to recover deleted photos. Not all ten are completely free, the two programs included in the list are still shareware, but you can still restore data using these programs at a time. Perhaps my list is not complete, I missed a lot of programs that you can download, but at the end of the test period you still have to pay $30-50. But this is understandable - after all, my review is called “10 free photo recovery software. Well, let's look at this "top ten".

1. MjM Free Photo Recovery Software

MjM Free Photo Recovery Software allows you to easily recover files that have been deleted from the memory card or have been lost due to formatting.

The program has an easy-to-use interface, can automatically recognize the type of memory card in the card reader, and, most importantly, shows thumbnails of photos that are detected during scanning. You can view the recoverable photos in full size, mark the ones you need in order to restore only selected photos. In preparing this note, I removed all images from the map using Windows Explorer— the program found and restored them all. Then I formatted the card in the camera and resumed the search - the program again found all the photos (the results of restoring photos after formatting in the camera may differ depending on the formatting method used in a particular camera). Works with Compact Flash, SmartMedia, Memory Sticks and other types of memory cards, and does not work with local hard drives.

Deep Scan is very slow and may take several hours depending on the size of the memory card.

You can download the program for free from the official website of Three-Dimensional Design Methodologies for Tree-based FPGA Architecture (Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering)

2.eIMAGE Recovery

eIMAGE recovery is a great tool for recovering digital photos and multimedia files from memory cards or media players with defective or damaged media, as well as images that you may have accidentally deleted from the memory card. This program works with most types of memory cards used in digital cameras: SmartMedia, CompactFlash, Sony Memory Sticks, IBM Microdisk, flash cards, and others.

The program's interface is easy to use and offers a quick card scan or in-depth scan for a better search for deleted photos. The eIMAGE recovery program displays photos that can be recovered as thumbnails, prompting the user to mark those that need to be restored. I tried eIMAGE to recover a newly formatted 1GB FlashCard that contained 80 photos before formatting (using the camera).

The program not only recovered all recently deleted files, but also found a total of 440 files, many of which went through several (previous) card formats.

The program supports all popular graphic formats, including Canon RAW (CRW), Kodak Raw (DCR), Nikon RAW (NEF) and a number of other specialized formats. If you've lost your photos due to accidental deletion or card damage, eIMAGE recovery may be your best chance of getting them back.

The program is shareware ( full version costs $27). Trial version can be downloaded for free or on the official website

3. PC INSPECTOR smart recovery

PC INSPECTOR supports the most common types of storage devices: Flash Card, Smart Media, SONY Memory Stick, IBM Micro Drive, Multimedia Card, Secure Digital Card and any digital camera storage media. For the program to work, it is necessary that the memory card be defined as additional disk. If the device is not defined this way, then any card reader can be used. When restoring data after selection desired disk prompted to select the format of the files that were lost. Among graphic files recovery is supported: GIF, JPG, BMP, TIF and a large number of specialized formats digital cameras. Restoration supported from audio/video files AVI formats, MOV, 3GP, MP4, WAV and DSS.

4. Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery

Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery is an easy to use data recovery tool to recover by accident deleted files images on memory cards various types(Compact Flash, SmartMedia, Memory Sticks, etc.). The interface is very easy to use, you just need to select the device that contains the images you want to restore and specify the folder to save the images.

5.Smart Image Recovery

Smart Image Recovery, like other programs from this review, can recover photos even if the disk has been formatted and new files have already begun to be written to it. The unique algorithm allows this utility to work regardless of the type of media or its file system: it just scans the drive for lost images but scans it easily and quickly. Built-in preview allows you to stop the process as soon as you find your lost photos.

The program works with both hard drives and removable media, works with Windows NT/XP/Vista

6. Art Plus Digital Photo Recovery tool

Art Plus Digital Photo recovery tool helps recover lost images, videos and music files from damaged or accidentally formatted digital camera or mobile phone memory cards.

It can read all types of memory cards currently on the market and recover all popular photo, video and audio formats. The creators of the Art Plus Digital Photo Recovery tool claim that this program can also read corrupted floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs.

The program is shareware. The demo version can be downloaded for free or on the official website of the program

7. AnyFound Photo Recovery Free Edition

The program allows you to find all the lost and deleted photos on the hard drives and USB drives. Almost all image formats are supported, including BMP, JPEG (JPG), GIF, PNG, PSD, TIFF, WMF, EMF, ICO, etc. The program provides a thumbnail view to select recoverable files

8.Canon RAW File Recovery Software

If you are the owner of a Canon digital camera, then Canon RAW File Recovery Software can help you with photo recovery. It works with Canon RAW (.CRW) photos. The program is designed to recover damaged or corrupt CRW files that do not open normally. The recovered file can be saved in native CRW format.

Files of the CRW type are mainly used in professional cameras in the event that post-processing of photographs is expected.

The main source of CRW corruption can be file resizing. CRW files are structurally very complex and even a small change can make CRW files unreadable. CRW repair checks the file size to make sure it's correct.

Canon cameras also typically store JPEG images along with the image inside RAW CRW files. This allows users to quickly access JPEGs, but gives them the additional option of modifying the RAW data at a later stage. CRW Repair also give you a separate option to access and extract JPEG images.

You can download the program for free from the official website

9.CRW Fixer

CRW Fixer is a powerful and handy tool that, like the previous product, can help you repair corrupted Canon RAW (CRW) files.

In some cases, CRW files may get corrupted or corrupted during the recovery process. This tool will help you deal with this problem.

Does not require installation. Unzip to any folder and run qphotorec_win.

You will notice more programs in the archive:

  • testdisk_win.exe - program for recovery after formatting.
  • fidentify_win.exe - detect file types in a folder.
  • photorec_win.exe - console version of PhotoRec.
  • qphotorec_win.exe - actually our hero of the review.

Without them, the functionality of PhotoRec will be broken.

Working with PhotoRec

Theory (briefly)

As I said, the program looks for files by content. It's easier to explain with an analogy: if something looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.

Applies to our case as well. Imagine the situation: a flash drive broke in half. The first memory chip cracked, data was extracted from the second one. Problem: With no file table left on the broken chip, the contents of memory are a series of zeros and ones with no indication of where one ends and the next file begins. PhotoRec will go through them in order and fish out familiar data types from the hodgepodge. Restoring files after formatting is a piece of cake for her.

Method advantage:

  • Is the flash drive asking for formatting because the file system has been deleted? Set PhotoRec on the entire memory of the flash drive and the data will be found. Data is recovered regardless of whether there is a file system or not.

There are two disadvantages:

  • A big nuisance is the situation when the file is stored in parts in different places in memory. helps to prevent the situation, but not to do it every time after data is written? Yes, and it is harmful to flash drives, memory cells will wear out faster than expected. PhotoRec will determine the beginning of the file, possibly the middle and end, but will not be able to glue it.
  • Names and folders are not restored. However, what difference does it make what the photos from your birthday are called if they open correctly?

Advice: if PhotoRec did not recover files that were probably on a flash drive, send a colleague into battle - . Different algorithm - different result.

Practice

Step 1. Select a drive.

Can be selected as disk entirely(the only correct option if the flash drive requires formatting), and separate section (C, D, E, and so on).

Choose a partition instead of a disk only when you are recovering data from a hard disk. The reason is to save time - searching within well-defined boundaries is faster than a full scan. Yes and junk files recover less.

Item description:

  1. List of visible drives. Lines starting with disk- physical disk, Drive- logical. In order not to get confused, select your flash drive in the Drive lines.
  2. List of detected partitions. Shown as a logical drive in the Computer window (C, D, E, and so on). First line " no partition” will allow you to choose to scan the entire disk.
  3. Selecting the file system that (was) on the disk. Usually the program itself sets the correct value.
  4. Paragraph " Free» - scans only free from legally residing files registered in the file table. Helps to quickly recover a deleted file when the rest of the disk is in order. " Whole"- scan the entire disk, with the restoration of non-deleted files too.
  5. Select the folder where to save (press the button Browse).

The meaning of the buttons is clear from the names: "About the program", "Select file formats", "Search" and "Exit".

Step 2. Specify the type of files to restore.

Click " reset” and tick only what you need. Most often this doc(MS Word documents), jpg(Photo), mp3(music), zip(archives and MS Word documents). The rest is to taste.

Do not put more formats than you need. For example, if you choose the type tx?, a huge number of text documents with incomprehensible content will be found - PhotoRec considers any combination of characters that is even slightly similar to text as a separate text document. Do not confuse with MS Word documents - they have a different format.

If you choose all file types when recovering data from a slow microSD cards 32 gigabytes of memory, you will have time to walk to the store on the other side of the city and return exactly to the completion of the restoration. Checked!

Step 3. Specify a folder to save all found files.

Click "Browse" to select a folder

Specify a folder on another drive. Not on the one from which you are restoring files!

For convenience, create a folder directly on the disk C:. Just make sure it has plenty of free space.

name the folder english letters, otherwise an error will appear Failed to create file! Please choose another destination» (« Error creating file! Choose another location«):

I do not recommend creating on the Desktop or in Documents, there will be the same error. The path to it may contain Cyrillic.

Step 4 Wait.

Click " Search» and wait. The process is not fast, stock up on coffee.

Step 5: Clean up files.

There are probably junk files. Among them are the ones you need, fully and partially restored. Most likely, those restored not 100% will not open, but you can get information from there. How - below.

Why isn't everything recovering?

When a file is deleted, the entries in the file table are erased, which indicate the physical location of the data - those very zeros and ones. Parts of memory (there may be several) that store the contents of the file are not overwritten entirely and immediately. They can be overwritten in a second or a year - it all depends more on the case than on the work of some algorithms. Therefore, in practice, recovered files contain pieces of information from new files, which is essentially corrupt.

The more often files are written, the higher the chance of overlap with new data. Even a seemingly harmless operation - opening a document - can cause the permanent erasure of deleted files, because auxiliary files are written (this is what Microsoft Word and a lot of other office programs).

Hence the conclusion: DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO THE FLASH DRIVE UNTIL YOU HAVE SCAN WITH RECOVERY PROGRAMS! Do not even reconnect, because Windows likes to measure the speed of flash drives to check for compatibility with ReadyBoost technology, creating a special file. Each reconnection reduces the chance of a successful recovery.

How to recover corrupted files

A damaged file contains random information and can be cut off.

I've noticed that PhotoRec seems to be discarding corrupted files. To extract absolutely everything from a flash drive, scan the program

File Repair program (many formats)

Is it possible to recover data directly to a flash drive?

It is possible, but not necessary. It is better to save what you find in a separate folder. The TestDisk program, which is paired with PhotoRec, is designed to restore file tables immediately on the hard drive, but I personally I do not recommend this approach, especially the recovery of the file table is not the recovery of deleted files.

How to recover deleted SMS and contacts?

PhotoRec is not for that.

The program restored something, but nothing opens.

Sometimes it happens. Since Recuva and File Repair didn't help, put up with it.

Where does PhotoRec save files recovered after deletion?

Since you have such questions, you did not read my note at all. Raise your eyes, please.

Formatted flash drive, deleted important files. How to restore them?

Read my instructions (see and in order).

Results

Don't forget to watch the video on YouTube:

You can not pay big money to a service center to recover deleted files, but take on the job yourself. Household cases - deleted the file, formatted the USB flash drive - are solved once or twice. Heavy (the flash drive is not detected at all, HDD makes strange sounds) is still the prerogative of service centers, fortunately, it happens less often.

Here you can choose the way you are used to displaying files (“Icons”, “List”, “Table”) and use file sorting.

The next step is to select the type of analysis of the recovered data.

For quick recovery use the "Analyze" function - in most cases, this process is enough to eliminate damage to the logical structure of files.

For deeper processing of corrupted files, use the "Explore" function. A more detailed analysis will take more time, but it is guaranteed to extract all useful information from the structure of a badly damaged file.

Once enabled, you can use the following options during the recovery process:

  • Overwrite files if names match
  • Preserve directory structure
  • Open folder after operation completed

How to recover corrupted files with preview

Restoring "manually", without using a wizard, consists of following three simple steps:

First, select the folder in the left side of the main program window that contains the files you need. On the right, the entire contents of the directory will be displayed, in which we will find the damaged file - the contents of such a file are not displayed in the program.
