Samsung pink screens are back. Now in Galaxy S8

Some of the new Galaxy S8 owners complain that the screens of their smartphones have an unpleasant reddish tint. The South Koreans were the first to complain about the “red screen” of the S8, who, for obvious reasons, got the news earlier than others.

True, Samsung did not understand the claims of compatriots and recommended them to read the manual a little and adjust the smartphone screen settings on their own, since there is no bug and cannot be.

However, it is clear that this story will not end just like that. Claims of the Galaxy S8's red screen on the Web only multiply as the smartphone spreads around the world.

And there are already opinions that there is a manufacturing defect. The situation gradually ceased to be inconspicuous and, in addition to ordinary users, even very qualified specialists began to connect to its discussion.

Raymond Soneira, one of the experts at DisplayMate Technologies, recently publicly who called the display of the new Galaxy S8 the best on the market, studied the indicated problem in detail and stated that he had not yet been able to find anything supernatural and terrible.

“Both of my Galaxy S8s are carefully calibrated and the screens do not show any redness at the factory settings,” BGR quotes Soneira’s letter. “However, users can make the “white point” a little reddish or bluish by applying custom settings and adjusting the screen color using the slider available in the “Screen Settings” section. In this way, I can reproduce the published photo. In addition, a blue filter can also give a reddish tint to the screen, which can be enabled along with the Night Shift mode in the same place in the settings.

The “deep red” OLED that I talked about in my Galaxy S8 article does not involve changing the “white point,” writes Soneira. "It's also been mentioned that screen color problems can be caused by 'diamond' pixels, which have twice as many green subpixels, but that's also nonsense."

However, the expert acknowledges the possibility that in some cases the “red screen” of the Galaxy S8 may indeed be the result of a “defect, incorrect factory settings or a software error.” But still, according to Soneira, in this case, only the setting remains the most likely explanation. In general, the user can only hope that if the screen of his Galaxy S8 suddenly “turns red”, then this problem can be fixed without extra effort and costs...

[UPDATED 04/26/2017]:

The mass nature of the problem associated with incorrect white balance, Samsung recognized and promised to fix it remotely. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, a Samsung spokesperson announced that by the end of April, all without exception Galaxy owners S8 and S8+ will receive an update software. The update will allow you to color-correct the screen at your own discretion and get rid of annoying redness of the display.

AT South Korea already on sale Galaxy smartphone S8. But the disturbing news of the first owners of the gadget comes from there, who complain that the screens of the device go red. However, Samsung does not agree with them, saying that this is not a bark and not a problem with the device, but settings that can be adjusted as needed.

Users, in turn, disagree with Samsung, reporting that they are unable to correct devices to get rid of the red tint, which is especially visible on the white parts of the screen. They are shouting about it all over in social networks and on YouTube.

Some mobile industry experts also support Galaxy users S8, believing that it might actually not be the screen setup Samsung is talking about, but rather a problem with the video accelerator or the AMOLED panel used by the company. There is also a not entirely clear wording that the height of the device may be to blame for color distortion, atypical proportions that led to instability. Although that already sounds pretty crazy.

It is not yet clear exactly how many buyers are suffering from this problem, but it is clear that the story will continue in the near future. After all, we have to find out if this is really Samsung's trouble or just poorly chosen settings that you can easily edit yourself, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Last year, many buyers of last year's flagship Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge faced a number of problems regarding the image quality on the screen of their new smartphones. Now (according to the ZDNet edition), Korean users who managed to get latest galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

The South Korean IT communities Ruliweb and Ppomppu have already published quite a few photos about these problems. Search query"Galaxy S8 red (pink) screen" has become one of the most popular in the top of the South Korean search engine Naver. ZDNet also added that "A Samsung PR representative explained to the local press that the pinkness of the screen is not a manufacturing defect; users can simply go to the settings menu and change the configuration."

On the other hand, in the service centers, where some of the users with problem phones managed to contact, they were told that the phones would be replaced. Samsung has not yet confirmed this, but more information will probably come in the next few days.

It is worth adding that the pinkishness of the image is quite common on some devices with Super AMOLED screens (but is highly dependent on the specific screen, brightness level, and is more often noticeable only when viewed from the sides). The problem has not bypassed many popular devices, including Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphones, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy tablets Tab S, et al.): some of them had a similar excessive "pinkness" or "violetness" at any brightness, and even when viewed perpendicularly. These screens came as an unpleasant surprise to online shoppers, who didn't have a chance to test the screen beforehand. If you google " samsung pink tint" or "samsung purple tint", then the scale of the problem on a global scale becomes apparent. However, in Samsung service centers, such screens were changed for free (unless you had to wait a couple of weeks for a new screen). Since in these cases the image was clearly distorted, it can be considered a manufacturing defect, which can (and should) be detected even before the device leaves the factory.

Today in most countries Samsung smartphones The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have yet to get into customer hands, so if screen pinkness becomes a major issue, we'll be sure to hear about it again.

As soon as the Galaxy S8 and S8+ received the first pre-orders, the owners of the flagships began to complain about the reddish tint of the screen of their new products. Samsung recommended that the owners of new products adjust the phone's screen settings on their own, since there could not be a problem at the hardware level. But it turned out that everything is not so simple.

Users were unable to change the color balance as it was already optimized in software. As a result, the redness of the display remained. For such cases, the South Korean manufacturer advised taking the device to a service center and replacing it.

During a conference call on the financial results of the first quarter of 2017, Samsung Electronics explained the situation with the reddish tint of the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus displays.

“By nature, Super AMOLED displays can have a natural color difference. Users can optimize the color according to their preference."

The manufacturer has checked all devices and is confident in their quality. In addition, Samsung promised to release an update that will allow owners of phones with a reddish display to better customize the colors on the screen.

After that, the profile resource SamMobile announced the start of distribution of an update in Korea for the Galaxy S8 marked SM-G950N and S8 + marked SM-G955N, which solves this problem.

G950NKSU1AQDG or G950NKSU1AQDG firmware adds new options in Adaptive Display mode, allowing you to adjust the color balance to your taste. Besides new feature Screen Edge Color Balance allows you to adjust the colors on the edges of the display. Date of distribution of the update in other regions on this moment remains unknown.

The web is full of information regarding the red panels of the Samsung Galaxy S8, but the screen of my S8 + sample did not suffer from such fierce redness as in other people's photos. Although the edges of the curved screen turned a little red for me. And the more I tried to ignore them, the more they caught my eye. Luckily, a new firmware has been released today to fix this issue.

Firstly, the screen color modes have been recalibrated and the color balance can be adjusted right there (only for an adaptive display). According to subjective sensations, when tilted, the panel now does not change colors sharply from white to green and from green to red. Secondly, there is a separate color balance setting at the edges. curved display. To get rid of the red tint, I needed to move the slider one step to the cold side. Now there are practically no complaints about the screen ("practically" - because it's still AMOLED with its pluses and minuses).

I have been using the Samsung Galaxy S8+ smartphone for about a week now and my impressions so far are extremely positive in terms of autonomy, camera, experience using a huge diagonal and performance. Reviews are coming, don't miss out.
