Transport

A city with a population of one million cannot boast a large selection of species public transport: There is no metro here yet, so you can only get around Ulsan by bus, taxi or rented car. Buses are divided into exclusively seated ("chvasok") and mixed type ("ilban"), in the former the price is correspondingly higher. Taxis also come in “luxury” and ordinary ones.

The cost of a trip around the city by taxi is 3000 KRW. At night and on holidays, an additional 20% may be charged above the tariff.

Only a very confident driver should rent a car here: the traffic is heavy, the signs are in Korean and English, traffic jams are common, and the fines are high.

Ulsan Hotels

Vacation homes are quite popular in Ulsan, but it’s a pity that almost all of them are located far from the center. But each room is a separate “apartment” with a kitchen, bed, living area, necessary accessories and free Wi-Fi. If you're lucky, you can rent this option for 50,000 KRW per day.

There are most motels in the city, almost all of them are in the center, with free parking; they charge from 60,000 KRW per night. But there are only two “five” hotels in Ulsan - the fashionable Lotte Hotel and the branded Hyundai Hotel, the price for a room in them starts from 123,000 KRW.

Cuisine and restaurants

The main gastronomic attraction of the city is seafood delicacies, especially whale meat. And although whaling has recently been banned here, mammals accidentally caught in the net are sent to the kitchen. This “delicacy” has a specific taste.

Restaurants and cafes (in the latter, fryers are installed directly on the tables) offer crabs, squid and raw fish heh, fans of a healthy lifestyle - vegetable salads "kimchi", meat eaters - bacon "samgyeopsal", chicken noodles "guksu" and blood sausage "sunde" " Those who believe that in this life you need to try everything do not disdain dishes made from dog meat. True, you will have to look for them.

A distinctive feature of Korean national cuisine is an unreal amount of spices, especially red pepper.

Like the rest of the country, Ulsan has a highly developed street food culture. They offer everything from fish-shaped buns and scrambled eggs to fish cakes, kebabs and silkworm larvae. The price for fast food is from 6,000 KRW, for dinner in a restaurant with alcohol for two - from 50,000 KRW.

Entertainment and attractions in Ulsan

Many attractions of the port city are in one way or another connected with the sea. The port itself, by the way, is worthy of being one of the first to visit - giant tankers and container ships of the main shipbuilder of the Korean Peninsula - the Hyundai Heavy Industries company - are moored here.

In the south of the city there is the oldest lighthouse “Ulgi” (155 Deungdae-ro, Ilsan-dong, Dong-gu), surrounded by a park of the same name (its other name is “Daewanam”). Its picturesque coniferous forests lead tourists straight to the sea with steep stairs. Even more famous is the Gangjeolgot Lighthouse (39-2 Ganjeolgot 1-gil, Seosaeng-myeon, Ulju-gun) - here residents and guests of Ulsan come to watch the sunrise first in all of South Korea.

You can learn more about the life of the majestic mammals at the Whale Museum (244, Jangsaengpogorae-ro, Maeam-dong, Nam-gu) or by going on a boat trip to the reserve - lucky ones see giants swimming past. A thousand and one entertainments are concentrated in the “Grand Park” (Singi-gil, Taehwa-dong, Jung-gu): a botanical garden, a rose garden, a zoo, a wishing stone, military equipment - it will take a whole day to see them all.

There are also beaches in Ulsan: the kilometer-long Ilsan is considered the favorite of the royal dynasty; you should walk around Jujong barefoot - the black pebbles, coupled with the sea air, will have a beneficial effect on your health.

Ulsan is a young city; there are almost no ancient historical attractions in it. But this does not mean that tourists will be bored here. Ulsan proudly displays the Ulgi Lighthouse, one of the oldest in Korea. Once upon a time, on the site of the city there was a whaling village, and fifty ships with prey arrived a day. A museum and a themed village commemorate this illustrious past. And if you want solitude with nature, the uninhabited island of Seuldo will “play” the melody of the waves for you.

Whale Museum

In the past, whaling flourished in Ulsan. The port was a forward base where many whaling ships moored - up to 50 per day. But when the number of whales sharply decreased, environmentalists sounded the alarm, and this type of activity was banned in the 80s. In memory of the past, a whale museum was opened, and now it is an important attraction in Ulsan. Interestingly, it was built near an ancient whaling village. The Ulsan Whale Museum is the only one in Korea. It contains skeletons of whales, figures of giants, helpful information, developing rooms for kids. There is a small petting zoo on one of the floors.

To the left of the museum building is the Whale Gallery. There is an 11-meter underwater tunnel and a dolphinarium. Tourists try to attend the feeding of the inhabitants of the aquarium, which takes place several times a day and is shown to spectators. To ensure safe viewing, up to a hundred people are allowed in. There is also a dolphin show that surprises the audience with breathtaking tricks.

Boat trip with whales

The taboo on catching giants has yielded results - today whales are again swimming past Ulsan. After the ban, there was a period of stagnation in the field of whale hunting and tourism, but with the advent of the museum and the assignment of the port to the status of a cultural zone of whales (1998), the city came to life. Do you want to look at the largest animals on Earth? Near the city there is a whale sanctuary where tourists go on boat trips. Tickets are sold at Changsaengpo Port.

The ship makes a three-hour journey along a specific route. If whales are spotted, the course is changed. But there is no guarantee that you will be able to see sea giants. For example, in the summer, 3 out of 10 trips get to see whales. But even if the humble animals are not on display, you can photograph the Ulsan Daegyo Bridge and watch the theatrical performances on the ship. The Whale Festival is held annually: boatmen present gifts to heaven, actors perform performances on the theme of whale and fishing in the prehistoric period. The event traditionally takes place at the end of spring.

Museum of Local Lore

The local museum will tell in detail about the life of people on the territory of today's Ulsan - from prehistoric times to the present day. The building has two floors: on the ground floor there is a reception desk, an exhibition gallery, and a museum store. On the second floor there is a historical gallery, a library, and an industrial history room. The museum is relatively new, operating since 2011. It is popular among tourists because it clearly tells about the history of the city and its inhabitants.

Ancient lighthouses near Ulsan

In Ulsan it is also worth seeing the ancient lighthouses: Ulgi and Kanjolgot. It is interesting that they are still maintained and functioning - there are less than 8% of the total number of such lighthouses in the country. The Ulgi lighthouse is venerable, more than a hundred years old. It was built by the Japanese back in 1906. Today, along with the ancient tower, there is a new one - 6 and 24 meters respectively. Tourists are accepted for an overnight stay - accommodation in the unusual Seongjuktan Hotel is free. True, there are only six rooms, so you need to worry about reservations in advance. The lighthouse itself is located on the territory of Ulgi Park.

The Kanjeolgot Lighthouse will give you a completely different feeling. What makes it unusual is its location: on a cape, on top of a hill. Considering the height of the structure (17 meters), it is worth watching the sunrise here. The sun can be greeted earlier than all other people who are on the Korean Peninsula. This makes watching the sunrise even more romantic. Recently, the Korean Ministry has allowed tourists to enter the vacant premises of working lighthouses. Thanks to this, you can spend an unusual night and be the first to see the sunrise in Korea.

Musical game of the sea: Seuldo

The list of places to see in Ulsan should include Seuldo Island. The island appears to tourists as a rock formation with numerous holes resembling a honeycomb. The name of this place can be compared to a breeze. The origin of the island's name is associated with the musical instrument "komungo". It’s worth coming here to hear the “voice” of Seuldo. Sea water enters holes in the rock and makes amazing sounds reminiscent of “komungo”. They are distributed throughout the island and are a unique phenomenon.

The island is also famous beautiful views. It is not difficult to get here, as it is connected by a breakwater and the section partially passes over the Syldoge Bridge. An ancient snow-white lighthouse vigilantly monitors the tranquility on the island. It was built in the 50s, and today it is inactive. The lighthouse occupies the center of the island, with a loudspeaker located at its lower part. A melody flows from the speaker to the communo. Benches are placed on the island so that people can enjoy the scenery and listen to the sound of the waves. Various types of fish live near Seuldo, which attracts fishermen.

Ilsan Beach: The Favorite Place of Kings

The city of Ulsan has the original Ilsan Beach made of sand and pebbles. It is quite long, more than a kilometer. It is believed that the beach was favored by members of the Silla royal dynasty. The name translated means “king’s umbrella.” Today, a completely different life reigns here: locals and tourists bask under the gentle sun, and a beach festival is held in mid-summer. The beach has showers and a camping area. Nearby there is a developed area with hotels, Taewanam Beach and Hwaamchu Lighthouse with an observation deck.

Devangam Park: large pine forest and “fallen dragon”

Devangam Park (Tevanam) is famous for its exotic trees. It is located in the city of Ulsan on the rocky coast of the southeastern part. Magnolias, camellias, apricots - you name it! There are especially a lot of pine trees, and they are quite old. Along a walking park alley surrounded by forest, you can go to the sea coast. The forest area is considered one of the largest in Korea. There are many strange stones and rocks on the shore. The road leads to the ancient lighthouse of Ulgi.

Another wonder of this place is the small Tevanam rock, shaped like a dragon. It is connected to the park by a bridge; after crossing it, guests get to the observation deck. The yellow-red color of the rock and the turquoise sea create an amazing combination. Sometimes this natural attraction is called Yeonchuam - the rock of the fallen dragon. Like, the monster can’t rise into the sky.

Exotic walk through the bamboo forest (Bamboo Grove)

Bamboo Grove is a new modern park along the river. Opposite the park area there are many cafes and restaurants. You can come here with the whole family - children will be happy to run along the paths through the bamboo grove. The river is home to fish and many waterfowl. There is a ferry, which can be used to get to the tower with a platform for viewing the surrounding area and a cafe. Bamboo Grove is part of a larger park where you can rent bicycles and Segways.

Grand Park in the center of Ulsan

The park in the city of Ulsan in South Korea appeared relatively recently - its construction was completed in 2006. It can be entered through the southern, eastern or central gates. Inside there is a bicycle rental service, a tram stop and a small shop. Mini markets near the entrance are the only place that sells food to visitors.

The park is quite spacious, each corner has its own atmosphere. There are playgrounds for children, a zoo, a butterfly museum, a water park, a botanical garden, a rose garden, and artificial ponds. It’s also worth finding the wishing stone. There are routes for walking. It will take a whole day to fully explore the Grand Park, as it is the largest urban park in Korea (36.4 sq. km).

You can make your introductory walk quick by renting a bicycle. They offer double bicycles for rent - this is convenient if someone in the group does not know how to ride. The large rose garden is a wonderful place for photo sessions. Roses bloom from late summer to early autumn. The Rose Festival is held annually. The park also contains military equipment (tanks and planes), and monuments to heroes who died during the Korean War.

Beach with black pebbles

In the city of Ulsan in South Korea there is an interesting beach - Jujeong. It has gained fame as a health destination: walking barefoot here is especially beneficial for health. The black pebbles strewn along the coast create a feeling of unreality and are mesmerizing. Nearby, Buddha sits proudly - a large statue about which legends are made. It is believed that the sculpture was discovered by a believer after a prophetic dream. In a dream, Buddha came to him and begged for help - he was very wet due to the rain. At the indicated place, a man discovered a statue. Since then, Buddha has been decorating the corner of Chujeong.

Features of a city by the sea

Ulsan will enchant you with its seascapes and its past. But the modern life of the port settlement also deserves attention. More than a million people live here. Ulsan has an unusual layout - industrial and residential areas are separated by forests and mountains. Industrial landscapes complement the impression of the beauty of nature.

The city of Ulsan (we often pronounce Ilsan) is one of the main centers of industry in South Korea, as well as a major international seaport, receiving up to 90 ships at a time. The main specialization of the port is the transportation of petroleum products.

Ulsan does not belong to any province; it is directly subordinate to the central apparatus of the government of the Republic of South Korea. Ilsan is an industrial city in South Korea. It stretches along the seashore. The city's population is more than a million people.

The city includes 4 districts (Puku, Tonggu, Namgu, Chungu) and 1 county (Ulju-gun). The districts are located at a great distance from each other, but thanks to excellent roads, moving around the city is not difficult. The city has an old and a new part, as well as a small satellite town. Ulsan is a sister city of Russian Tomsk.

Bus tours are organized between other cities for tourists to explore the sights of Ilsan.

Industry

Ulsan's industry is divided into two complexes: Mipo (an engineering plant, the world's largest shipyard and production of other equipment) and Onsan (production and refining of oil and other chemicals). The shipyard area is 7 million m², on which 9 dry docks are located. The country has built several large, basic enterprises here.

The famous Huindai corporation, which made South Korea famous, is responsible for mechanical engineering and shipbuilding in Ilsan. It is ships, and not cars, as is commonly believed, that are the main products of the industrial giant. Vessels are exported to all countries of the world. Moreover, not only civilian but also military vessels are produced here. One of the largest factories of the SK Energy corporation is responsible for the chemical industry. Despite the fact that this is an industrial center, it is strictly concerned with the state of the environment and the ecological situation is not bad at all.

Ilsan Attractions

Ilsan is a young city, so you won’t find any antiquities in it. But there are also interesting places and buildings in it. For example, the Kanzholgot and Ulgi lighthouses. They are operational and still being serviced. Ulgi was built in the early 20th century by the Japanese and is the oldest in Korea. The lighthouse has two towers - one tower is 6 m high (old), and the other is 24 m high (new). The lighthouse building has a shelter for tourists from 6 free numbers, but they must be booked in advance, because the demand is high. Tourists are attracted not only by the lighthouse itself, but also by the coniferous park surrounding it. The park has two names - Tevanam (Devangam) and Ulgi, named after the lighthouse. The park is located along the coast. There are about 15,000 pine trees. For ease of walking, the park has paved paths, one of which leads to a pedestrian bridge to the Tevanam island. According to legend, the ruler Munmu, belonging to the Silla dynasty, is buried in Tevanam. According to legend, after his death he turned into a good dragon who protects the shore from any enemy.

Gangjeolgot Lighthouse is famous for being located on the easternmost cape in Korea and being the first to greet the sunrise. Tourists who have been here bring wonderful photographs of the approaching dawn.

Another attraction of Ulsan is Ilsan and Jujeong beaches. Jujeong is famous for its black pebbles, which are very useful to walk on barefoot. Near Jujeong Beach there is a statue of a seated Buddha. There is a legend associated with it that a local resident dreamed of a rain-drenched Buddha asking for help. After this, the statue was discovered. Ilsan was a favorite strolling destination for the Silla royal dynasty. The name of the beach translates as “King’s Umbrella”.

The city has a museum of images on stone - petroglyphs. They mostly depict whale hunting. The museum is dedicated not only to petroglyphs, but also to the life of primitive man in general.

Another famous museum in Ulsan is the Whale Museum. It exhibits exhibits on endangered whale species, as well as their life and evolution in general. A separate room is dedicated to an exhibition illustrating the life of gray whales. Ulsan was once a center of whaling, but now whale catching is significantly limited, but not completely prohibited. Therefore, local restaurants serve dishes made from whale meat. Since Ulsan is a port city, fish dishes are the specialty of the local cuisine. You can also buy the freshest fish and seafood at local markets.

Not far from Ulsan there is a whale sanctuary where you can watch whales in the wild.

There is a large Ferris wheel in the center of Ulsan. It is located on the roof of a seven-story shopping complex. Its height together with the building is 109 m. It is also remarkable because it can withstand hurricanes and earthquakes with a power of up to 8-9 points. Each Ferris wheel cabin is equipped with heated seats, air conditioning and even telephone communication with the operator.

The mild climate, picturesque mountain and seascapes of Ulsan make it popular among tourists.

Ulsan (Korean: 울산광역시) is a city of special status and directly subordinate to South Korea located in the southeast of the country. It is located on the shores of the Sea of Japan, 70 kilometers northeast of Busan.

Introduction

Until the early 1960s, the city of Ulsan (울산광역시) was an agricultural center and fishing port. Since 1962, with the start of construction of large factories, oil refineries and chemical plants, the city began to be considered as an industrial area of Korea.

Now this city accounts for 15.2% of total industrial production in Korea.

Ulsan became the “cradle” for the world’s largest automobile plant and shipyard, owned by the famous Hyundai Motor company.

Located on the coast of the Eastern Sea, the city has a comfortable airport, convenient railway and road systems, and a developed port infrastructure.

The industrial area consists of two large national industrial complexes: Ulsan-Mipo - located in the city center, and produces mainly cars, ships, petrochemical products, and Onsan, located on the outskirts of the city, where oil refineries, chemical, engineering and metallurgical plants are located.

Ulsan ranks first in the automobile and shipbuilding industries and second in the petrochemical industry in the Republic of Korea. And without stopping there, it continues to strengthen its strong position as an engine of growth for the Korean economy.

The most visited attractions by tourists include Ulgi Park, Jeongja Beach, and Ganjeolgot Cape. The white lighthouse and the bizarre shapes of the seaside rocks of Ulgi Park create an extraordinary fairy-tale view.

Traditional cuisine

Fish

Ulsan is famous for its dishes made from whale meat. However, those who try this food for the first time should know that whale meat has a specific aroma that not everyone finds pleasant.

In general, the history of the city of Ulsan has long been associated with whales. This became known thanks to the famous Bangudae petroglyphs at Daegok-ri, which took hundreds of years to create (from about 6000 to 1000 BC). They consist of numerous rock carvings in the form of whales and people engaged in whaling.

Today, whale hunting is prohibited in Ulsan, but this does not apply to whales accidentally caught in fishing nets. There are several restaurants near Jangsaengpo port that serve various dishes using whale meat.

Since the city is located near the East China Sea, there is always an abundance of fresh fish. Restaurants located near Jeonja Beach offer dishes whose main ingredient is sliced raw fish, and in winter there are many people here to try the crabs.

It is worth noting that near the train station and express bus station you can find many cafes where you can enjoy the taste of traditional Korean cuisine.

Ulsan has an unusual layout - it is a very large city on the seashore, the residential and industrial areas of which are scattered at a great distance from each other, surrounded by mountains, forests and parks. There are two large industrial complexes in Ulsan: Mipo (production of cars, ships and other equipment) and Onsan (chemical and oil refining industries).

The factories and shipyards of the world-famous company are located in Ulsan Hyundai. And if in our country we are familiar with it mainly as a giant of the automotive industry, then in Ulsan it becomes clear that cars are only a small side business of this company. Hyundai's main specialization is shipbuilding. Nowadays, Korea launches the most ships in the world, and the main credit for this goes to Hyundai.

Ulsan is a very young city with practically no ancient attractions or historical places. But in Ulsan you can see one of the largest ocean ports surrounded by huge gardens and parks. Since the city is industrial, it pays great attention to ecology, and has already achieved great success in this direction. In the center of Ulsan there is a very large and beautiful park. It's really nice to walk around the city. And the impressive industrial landscapes of the port and industrial zones will not leave anyone indifferent.

In addition, Ulsan has whale museum. Whaling used to flourish in this place, but now the capture of these majestic animals is limited. There is even a whale sanctuary near Ulsan, where you can go on a boat trip in the hope of meeting whales. Those who are far from natural romance can try exotic dishes made from whale meat in local port restaurants. The dishes are expensive and the taste is very unusual. Of course, you can buy fresh fish and seafood everywhere.

Available in Ulsan and petroglyph museum, which are several thousand years old. There you can see drawings on stone, depicting, among other things, the same whales and people going on the hunt for these sea animals.

Next to the low old lighthouse, a new white tower has already been built, higher. The lighthouse is surrounded by a large picturesque coniferous forest Taewanam Park(Daewangam), which is also sometimes called by the name of the lighthouse - Ulgi Park. This is a real pine forest on a rocky seashore.

Another famous lighthouse in Ulsan is Gangjeolgot lighthouse(Ganjeolgot). This is a special place due to its geographical location. Cape Gangjeolgot is the easternmost part of Korea, and from the lighthouse of the same name you can be the first in Korea to see the sunrise. In this place, dawn comes earliest. Next to the lighthouse are the ruins of the Japanese fortress Sosenpo, which are about 500 years old.
