Installing iOS 6.1 6 on 3gs jailbreak. Processes that can be deleted without consequences

If you're an iPhone 3GS or iPod touch 4G user and have upgraded to, which was released recently to fix a critical SSL bug then the good news is that it is still possible to perform an untethered jailbreak on your iOS device using a combination of Redsn0w and p0sixspwn.

In this article we show you how to jailbreak iOS 6.1.6 first using , and then converting it into an untethered jailbreak using Cydia package.

Update (June 17): Please note a new version of p0sixspwn has been released which adds support for iOS 6.1.1, so you can use p0sixspwn directly to perform the untethered jailbreak on your device running iOS 6.1.6, instead of using this workaround. You can check out our . If you've any problem with that method then you can use this workaround.

Here are some important points to note before you proceed.

  • This guide is meant for iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4G users as iOS 6.1.6 is compatible with only these devices. If you’re looking for a jailbreak for iOS 7 or higher then check out our for links to the latest tutorials.
  • Warning: If you depend on to unlock your iPhone, then DO NOT update to iOS 6.1.6.
  • Please note that may void your warranty and hence proceed with and at your own risk.
  • Please do not forget to backup your iOS device before you proceed. You can for instructions on how to backup your iOS device using iCloud or to backup your iOS device using iTunes.
  • Please ensure you are running the latest version of iTunes.
  • This method uses an iOS 6.0 jailbreak with the iOS 6.1.6 filesystem, so it could cause some unknown issues.

You can follow these step-by-step instructions to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4G on iOS 6.1.6:

Step 1: Download Redsn0w 0.9.15b3 (Redsn0w 0.9.15 beta 3) from and save the application in a folder named “ ” on your desktop.

Step 2: Download iOS 6.0 firmware file(yes, the trick is to point Redsn0w to the iOS 6.0 firmware file and NOT iOS 6.1.6 firmware file) for your iOS device from the links mentioned below:

  • Note: Please ensure you download the correct iOS 6.0 firmware file for your iPhone model. Check if you need any help in identifying which iOS firmware file to download for your iPhone model.

Step 2: Connect your device to the computer and double click the Redsn0w zip file and extract the application.Navigate to the Redsn0w folder and launch the Redsn0w application.

Windows 7 users should run the exe in Windows XP compatibility mode (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select Properties, then select the Compatibility tab and select Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP). Windows XP and Windows 7 users should run Redsn0w as 'Administrator'(right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select ‘Run as an Administrator’).

Step 3: Click on Extras button.

Step 4: Then click on the Select IPSW button. Navigate and select the firmware file download in Step 2. It should successfully identify it and inform you that it will be used in the rest of the session.

Step 5: Go back to Redsn0w’s main page and click on the Jailbreak button.

Step 6: Redsn0w will now start preparing the jailbreak data.

Step 7: You will now be prompted to select the jailbreak options. Make sure Cydia is selected and click on the Next button to continue. You can also select Enable battery percentage option.

Step 8: You will now be prompted to put your iOS device into the DFU mode. Turn off your device, however keep it plugged in to the computer.

Step 9: Click on the Next button. Redsn0w will take you through the necessary steps:

Home button

Step 10: Your iOS device should reboot now. Please remember to release the Home button.

Step 11: Your iOS device will reboot again and Redsn0w will now begin uploading the new RAM disk and kernel.

Step 12: You will be notified once the jailbreaking process is complete. Click on the Quit button to exit the application.

Step 13: The rest of the process will take place on your iOS device, wait for it to complete. Your iOS device will reboot once again (which could take approximately 5 minutes). You will now see the Home screen on your iOS device, but Cydia would still be missing, that’s because you still need to tether boot your iOS device using Redsn0w. So follow the steps mentioned below.

Boot tethered:

Step 14: Launch Redsn0w again.

Step 15: Click on Extras button.

Step 16: Then click on the Select IPSW button. Navigate and select the firmware file downloaded in Step 2.

Step 17: Then click on the Just Boot button.

Step 18: You will now be prompted to plug your iOS device to the computer and switch it OFF again. Follow the instructions and click on the Next button to move to the next screen:

Step 19: You will now need to put your iOS device into the DFU mode. Redsn0w will take you through the necessary steps:

(a) Hold the Power button on your iOS device down for 3 seconds:

(b) Now simultaneously hold the Home button and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds:

(c) Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until Redsn0w detects the device:

Step 20: Redsn0w will recognize the iOS device in DFU mode and apply the limerain exploit (remember to release the Home button). Your iOS device will reboot and a pineapple logo will appear, indicating a tethered boot.

Step 21: Wait for the process to complete, once it is complete, you should see the Lock screen on your iOS device.

Your iPhone or iPod touch has now been successfully jailbroken and you should see Cydia on the Home screen. If you don’t find it on the Home screen, please don’t panic, search for it using Spotlight. The jailbreak is currently a “tethered” jailbreak,

Convert Tethered Jailbreak to Untethered Jailbreak using P0sixspwn:

Step 22: Launch Cydia. Since you’re launching Cydia for the first time, you may be prompted to do an essential upgrade. Please go ahead and do it, and then relaunch Cydia again.

Step 23: Tap on the Search tab, and search for p0sixspwn.

Step 24: Tap on p0sixspwn from the search results, tap on Install, followed by the Confirm button.

Step 25: Tap on Return to Cydia when prompted.

That’s it, your iOS device has now been successfully (untethered) jailbroken.

Troubleshooting Tips:

1. Can't find Cydia:

If you can’t find Cydia on the home screen then double check you have tethered boot your device. Please ensure you’ve followed steps 14 to 21.

2. Unsupported IPSW:

If you get an error message informing you that the IPSW is not supported by this version of Redsn0w, then it means you’ve downloaded iOS 6.1.3 firmware file in step 2 instead of iOS 6.0 firmware file. Please download iOS 6.0 firmware file to jailbreak your iOS device running on iOS 6.1.3.

3. Cydia closes immediately:

If Cydia closes immediately when you try to launch it, it means that you haven’t installed p0sixspwn package from Cydia. Follow steps 22-24 mentioned above to solve this issue.

Instructions - how to jailbreak iOS 6.1

Step 1

We connect the Apple product to the computer via USB, go to iTunes and make a backup copy of the device.

Remove (disable) the password if it is present.

Canadian developer with the nickname iH8sn0w, creator of the Sn0wbreeze and iFaith applications, has released a solution that allows you to untethered jailbreak iOS 6.1.3/6.1.5. His new development is presented in the form of a jailbreak package p0sixspwn, which is installed from Cydia.

Many who put off switching to iOS 7 in order to jailbreak iOS 6 now have a real opportunity to implement their plans. Using p0sixspwn is convenient because you do not need to repeat the procedure of hacking a jailbroken device. The package is downloaded from Cydia along with other tweaks.

Untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3/6.1.5 is currently only available on iPhone 4, 3GS and iPod touch 4G. These devices use a fourth-generation A4 processor, which has a useful property from a jailbreak point of view - a vulnerability has been found for it that allows you to hack and install Cydia.

Requirement:

  • iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G on iOS iOS 6.1.3/6.1.5. Devices with A5+ processors are not supported.

Untethered jailbreak of iOS 6.1.3/6.1.5 using p0sixspwn and Redsn0w:

Step 1: Download iOS 6.0 firmware IPSW file from here.

Step 2: Download current version Redsn0w 0.9.15b3.

Step 3: Open Redsn0w 0.9.15b3 in administrator mode if you are on Windows or Ctrl-click and select "Open" from the new menu if you are an OS X user.

Step 4: Go to the Extras –> Select IPSW menu and specify in the window the iOS 6.0 IPSW file (not iOS 6.1.3/6.1.5) from the device for which you are jailbreaking.

Step 5: Go to the first page and click on the Jailbreak button, then check the Cydia box and put the iGadget into DFU mode. Redsn0w will now begin to perform the procedure iOS jailbreak 6.1.3/6.1.5. Once completed, you need to click “Autoboot this device when it connects in DFU mode” to enter tethered jailbreak mode. After rebooting, you will get a device running iOS 6.1.3/6.1.5 with jailbreak.

Step 6: Reboot your iPhone 4/3GS or iPod touch 4G by connecting it to your PC and put it into jailbreak mode using the special function Redsn0w. To do this, go to the “Extras” section and click the “Just boot” button.

Step 7: From the home screen of your smartphone or player, open Cydia. Please wait while the store updates the content. Select one of Cydia's operating modes.

Step 8: Go to the Search tab and search for “p0sixspwn”. If you did not find the package, add the “http://repo.ih8sn0w.com” repository by going to the Manage –> Source section.

Step 9: Install this package and reboot the device to check the untethering of iOS 6.1.3/6.1.5 jailbreak.

Note that iPhone users 4 there is another possibility - to jailbreak using Evasi0n 7, having previously installed stock firmware iOS 7.0.4. However, this is not particularly necessary - p0sixspwn provides a full-fledged untethered jailbreak for the “six”.

After release, untethered Jailbreak for iOS 6 became available

The following devices are supported:

  • iPod touch 4G
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone4 (GSM)
  • iPhone4 (CDMA)

The following instructions will help you do Untethered Jailbreak firmware 6.1.3/6.1.4/6.1.5

(Until step 13 this is a previously well known installation procedure tethered Jailbreak, if you know how to make a tethered Jailbreak, you can go straight to step 13)

Attention! You do everything at your own peril and risk!

1. Download latest version RedSn0w ( , ) and unpack

2. Connect the device to the computer, launch redsnow

3. Click Extras

4. Click Select IPSW and point to the one downloaded earlier for your device.

5. Go back and press the Jailbreak button

6. We see instructions for the Jailbreak procedure (follow the instructions of the program)

More details: You need to put the device into DFU mode (if that doesn’t work, watch numerous video instructions on YouTube)

A. Turn off the device, with the cable plugged in

b. Press the Home and Power buttons simultaneously and hold for 10 seconds

V. Let go Power button(top) and continue holding Home for another 10 seconds

d. The device should enter DFU mode (the screen should be black)

7. RedSn0w will begin the procedure

8. After completing the Jailbreak, select the Install Cydia option

9. At this stage we get tied up Jailbreak

10. To turn on the device, you need to click on the Extras button, select iOS 6 firmware by clicking the Select IPSW button, and then click the Just boot button

11. Go to DFU mode again as in step 6

12. Your device is now booted and you should see the Cydia icon on your desktop

13. Now you need to use the search in Cydia and install the tweak

14. After reboot you will receive untethered Jailbreak iOS 6

While the device is in Jailbreak tethered mode, you will not be able to turn it on normally without performing steps 10, 11 (6)

Remove the screen lock. If you have a lock code set, it must be disabled before the hacking process can begin. You will be able to enable it again once the hacking process is completed.

  • Go to Settings on the home screen.
  • Go to the "General" menu.
  • Go to the "Lock Code" menu.
  • Disable the lock code feature. You need to enter a code to disable it.

Connect your device. Use USB cable supplied with your device to connect to USB port your computer. iTunes may start automatically. You can leave it open if you are backing up your data (see next step), in otherwise you can close the program.

Do backups your data. Before hacking your phone, it is highly recommended to make backup copies of your settings. This will allow you to recover your iPhone data if the jailbreak procedure is unsuccessful or you are unhappy with the procedure. You can make backups with using iTunes or upload them to iCloud.

  • Backup using iTunes. Open iTunes. Open the Summary tab for your device. To do this, click View and select Show Sidebar. A list of your iPhone's contents will appear on the left side of the iTunes window. Open Device Summary. Click on "Back up now". iTunes will save the data from your phone as an image file on your computer.
    • You can verify the copying was successful by going to properties and selecting the "Devices" tab. You will see the copied data in the list.
  • Backup using iCloud. Open the Settings menu on the home screen. Select iCloud, then Storage & Backup. Enable the feature Reserve copy iCloud. Your device will automatically back up when connected to power and a wireless network.
    • You can change the saved data by going to “Storage Management”. Here you can see how much space your backup files take up and select the applications you want to restore.
  • Disable the backup password. The password must be disabled during the hacking process. In iTunes, click on your device and uncheck Encrypt Local Backup. Next, you will need to enter a password and perform the copying procedure.

    Download p0sixspwn. This is a hacking tool developed by the iOS hacking community that will allow you to hack a device running 6.1.3 - 6.1.5 iOS. It is an unmanaged cracker, which means there is no need to connect the device to the computer every time you start it.

    • p0sixspwn is available for free.
    • Extract the ZIP file after downloading. You can place the folder anywhere for easy access, such as your desktop.
  • Right-click on the file p0sixspwn. Select “Run as administrator” or, if the option is not available, “Open”. The program should launch and detect and show your device in the main window. If your device doesn't show up, make sure it's properly connected and detected in iTunes.
