Brief Introduction
Not long ago I came across another cheap model of a mobile phone with a folding body from the manufacturer Alcatel. It is noteworthy that a friend who was given this handset as a gift asked me to give me some budget model in exchange for a while, since this particular phone did not suit him with the loudspeaker volume. And the folding bed didn’t really suit his individual preferences. But since the phone was practically new, as they say, fresh out of the box, I decided to use it and write a story based on my impressions received during the use of this model.
Equipment, appearance, slots and connectors
Model Alcatel 1030D was purchased for 990 rubles. Along with the device itself, the manufacturer put in a small box a battery, a charger (with a USB connector for connecting the cable), a micro-USB cable, a stereo headset and documentation with a warranty card. For a cheap device this is quite a normal package.
As I later learned, the manufacturer offers devices in different colors. Basically, black predominates with different side inserts: white insert on the side edges, red, blue, pink. I received a completely black device.
Visually, the model looks good - a compact phone, and it’s assembled quite well, without obvious gaps, cracks or distortions. The thin back cover snaps easily into place; To pick it up, there is a small recess-niche. The dimensions of the device are measured in the ratio of 45.5 mm by 94 mm (width to length), and the thickness of the case when folded is measured at 16.5 mm. The model weighs only 72 grams and fits well in the hand. Of course, the plastic used as the body material is cheap and does not shine with quality. The front cover of the clamshell is glossy and gets dirty just once or twice, becoming covered with fingerprints and smudges.
But the back cover is matte, covered with rough embossing, so the phone does not slip out of your hands. If the manufacturer had put the same plastic on the front side, things would have been much better.
On the left side there is a jack for connecting headphones and a headset. This is a standard 3.5 mm mini-jack, so if the user wants to choose headphones to replace the standard headset, this will not be a problem.
On the right side there is a micro-USB connector. There is no protective plug provided here, so dust can easily accumulate in the connector, and there is a possibility of static when connecting the cable.
This model is a device with support for two SIM cards. Under back cover and the battery there are two slots for two SIM cards. Also, just above the top SIM card slot there is a slot for a microSD memory card; hot swapping is not provided.
The phone folds and unfolds easily, without much effort you can do it with one hand. It is possible to customize sound signal when opening/closing the lid.
Display
For a budget clamshell, the quality and capabilities of the screen did not surprise me. According to the stated characteristics, a simple TFT display is capable of displaying more than 262 thousand colors and boasts a diagonal of 1.8 inches.
The matrix resolution is 128 by 160 pixels. The screen clearly lacks brightness and contrast. Of course, pixelation of both fonts and images is clearly visible to the naked eye. Viewing angles are small; in direct sunlight, the image becomes dull and faded. However, in its price segment, compared to colleagues in the workshop represented by the same Samsung E1200 , E1080 or Samsung 1150 clamshells, the display of this Alcatel is no worse than the screens installed in these models.
Keyboard
Opening the folding case, we find a keyboard with rubberized keys, which is already standard for cheap phones. I myself have a pretty good attitude towards such push-button solutions, especially since the keys, as well as the numbers and inscriptions on them, are large (except that the Russian alphabet is a little small).
The keys themselves are separated by lines horizontally and vertically.
However, when pressed, the following became clear: with a small stroke, the button should be pressed with the pad of your finger. When pressing the same soft selection buttons with a fingernail, the user needs to aim at the center of the button - a small key peg can be felt through the rubber pad.
If you miss it or press next to it, the key may not work. With the same rubber "clave" Samsung E1200 or Samsung 1150 I have not seen this.
In addition, the backlighting of the keys, in my opinion, is rather poor, although the keys are visible, and I won’t be too picky in this case.
Speaker, microphone and communication
The speaker cannot be called clear and loud. First of all, it should be noted that even at maximum volume, if the device is, for example, in a bag, the phone can be heard muffled. And you need to set the volume to maximum, since below this level the phone is not audible at all. Extraneous noise and distortions are also present, there is a slight “wheezing” when talking with the interlocutor.
When talking with your interlocutor, you also need to hold the receiver as close to your ear as possible, and the microphone is not particularly good at voice transmission. In addition, the vibration alert is quite weak.
There are only four sound profiles here: normal, vibration, silent, and on an airplane.
This model operates in GSM networks in the 900/1800 range. As a result, it turns out that the volume level and call quality are clearly below average. You can’t really call it bad, but you don’t feel comfortable either. I tried to talk while indoors, from a minibus, and on the street. Of course, the clarity of the signal, coupled with the interlocutor’s handset (plus his location), also affects. But more than once, communicating according to the model Alcatel One Touch 1030D, I had to invite my friend to speak louder. The phone sometimes lost signal, not often, but it happened.
It’s also worth mentioning that the phone supports two SIM cards, which can be an obvious advantage for people who use, for example, SIM cards from two operators, either work and personal. You can select a SIM card for a call; if they call on one card, the second SIM will not be available. The call log in each entry records which SIM card the call was made from or which SIM card was called.
Battery and operating time
The “native” removable battery has a stated capacity of 500 mAh. Which is clearly not enough, given the single-SIM competitors represented by the same Samsung models E1200 and 1150, which are equipped with an 800 mAh battery. Of course, the battery capacity affects the operating time without recharging. If you use the phone only for calls and SMS, then with 7-8 calls a day for one and a half to two minutes, and several messages a day, the device will last about four days. If you indulge in music and radio, the operating time is significantly reduced.
Other features and functions
As already mentioned, the model implements USB interface 2.0, with which, by connecting a cable, you can copy audio files and pictures from your PC. In addition, it is possible to charge the battery by connecting the phone via a USB cable to a personal computer.
The model has only 3 megabytes of built-in memory, but support for microSD cards allows you to expand the memory up to 8 gigabytes. A 2-gigabit memory card from Transcend was quite suitable - the device formatted it and there were no difficulties in filling it with music and pictures. When connected to a PC, it is detected as a flash drive. From your phone, you can see how the memory card is filled with information through the “Files/Memory Card” category.
The phone menu is divided into nine categories.
The standard set of applications includes an alarm clock, a calendar, and a weak voice recorder.
The audio player is very, very mediocre, not rich in settings. And to listen to the radio, you need to connect a headset that will work as an antenna to receive the signal: otherwise the device will display a corresponding message about its absence. MP3 format is supported.
As for working with the Internet, the model does not have such an option; Bluetooth is also not available.
This model does not have any camera, which, however, did not sadden me much - a weak 0.3 megapixel module, which allows you to take unclear pictures, will not do much except increase the price (even if insignificant). Photos from such a camera would be suitable, perhaps, as a screensaver for the small screen of the model itself, but what’s the point if the picture you like can be easily transferred to a memory card via USB?
The small diode, common among cheap Alcatel models, which serves as a mini-flashlight, is not present in this model.
conclusions
What can I say: this is not the first time I’ve used a budget dialer, although I rarely get hands on flip phones. Model Alcatel 1030D in fact, it is more like an ordinary grandmother's phone, the functionality of which is slightly diluted with some additional features. It can be noted that for a price of less than a thousand rubles we get a nice-looking compact mobile phone with a folding body. A completely normal assembly, a USB interface with the ability to charge the battery via a cable and a slot for a microSD card to expand the device’s memory. It is possible to use the phone as an MP3 player and radio via headphones (3.5" mini-jack connector). And the manufacturer carefully put the standard headset in the box - what's wrong?
In fact, it is clear that not everything is so smooth and cloudless with the model - there are significant shortcomings and roughnesses. The plastic front panel is soiled, the speaker and microphone are frankly weak, and the keyboard is far from the best, which has already been mentioned above. Such things as a cheap display with pixelation should not be considered a disadvantage considering the price, because many grandmothers' phones have just such screens.
Competition from mobile devices available in any segment - there are competitors and Alcatel 1030D. If we take into account the fact that this model is a clamshell, then for comparison there is a dual-SIM clamshell Samsung E1272, the cost of which is slightly more expensive (200-250 rubles). Model E1272 from the Korean manufacturer can offer approximately similar parameters: in addition to two SIM cards, it has, like the model from Alcatel, a 3.5 mm jack for connecting headphones and a headset, the display has the same diagonal of 1.8 inches and similar resolution. There is also an FM radio. True, in the model Samsung E1272 There is no slot for a memory card, although there is support for the MP3 format, so due to the small memory it will not be possible to make an audio player out of the phone. But the 800 mAh battery allows the device to work longer without recharging.
You can also draw an analogy with an older model Samsung E1150, which has approximately the same parameters as Samsung E1272. True, the screen here is even smaller in diagonal and resolution.
But among monoblocks there are plenty of competitors. One can recall at least the company Explay, which has managed to produce models with support for multiple SIM cards at a fairly low cost. As a worthy example, you can pay attention to the model Explay A240 with support for two SIM cards in a classic candy bar case. The phone can offer the user an impressive 2.4-inch screen for this segment with a resolution of 320 pixels by 240 pixels, battery with a capacity of 900 mAh, FM radio with the ability to listen without connecting a headset and a 0.3 megapixel camera for show. As in Alcatel 1030D, there is map support microSD memory, but with a limit not of 8 gigabytes, but of 32 gigabytes. In addition there is support Bluetooth standard, and the price of the device is approximately 800-900 rubles.
Thus, the choice in the category of cheap dialers with support for two SIM cards is this moment there is quite a good one. Alcatel 1030D I can’t call it a good choice and I won’t recommend it for purchase, since within this price you can find something better, especially if you don’t limit your choice to preferences in the form of a folding case.
