Positioning

The Honor line within Huawei has been spun off as a separate brand in order to counter the Chinese manufacturers who offer all the best devices in terms of price / quality every year. That is, these are devices that should attract with a low price in their segment, but at the same time not be budgetary, but provide the set of features and technologies that a consumer in the middle price segment expects. More precisely, this is not even the middle price segment, if you look at the cost of the flagships of all companies, but the very beginning of this middle segment. In Russia, these are devices costing slightly more than 15 thousand rubles, that is, a segment from 15 to 20 thousand rubles.

The first breakthrough in the Honor line can be considered the Honor 5X model, over the past year the company has sold 11 million units in all markets. Some might think that this is not enough, but, for comparison, all sales of Meizu amounted to 22 million units, of which only 2 million were in foreign markets. Huawei has a very different situation, Honor 5X sold well both in Europe and in the US.

Honor 6X is now being brought to the role of the most massive model of the Honor line, as it is noticeably cheaper than Honor 8, which was created to compete with flagships. However, in Honor 6X we see a typical set of features for this price - a fingerprint sensor, a metal body, good battery life and a decent camera. This is one of the most interesting devices in terms of price / quality ratio in this segment, and due to the popularity of the Huawei brand, which is perceived by many as an A-brand, it is a preferable purchase when choosing from Chinese smartphones. In my opinion, Honor 6X could become a potential bestseller in its segment, and during 2017 we will see a gradual change in price, which will also push sales up. The phone has several features, in particular, a dual main camera, they can be an additional reason for buyers to purchase this particular smartphone.

In my opinion, this smartphone is ideal for the mass consumer, who is focused on long-term use of the phone for two to three years, practically does not play "heavy" games, and phone usage scenarios are typical.

Design, dimensions, controls

Huawei found its own “design” and began to produce packs of devices that are very similar in appearance. So, in the guise of Honor 6X, you can easily guess both the Nova line and the older models from Huawei, plus many other models that exist on the market.

A typical layout from Huawei involves placing the fingerprint sensor on the back. If this is your first device with a fingerprint sensor, then you will quickly get used to it. If you already had a phone with a front sensor, then you most likely will not like it, since it takes a little longer to press.

The fingerprint sensor has been redesigned compared to the previous year's models, the unlock speed is 0.3 seconds, which can be considered a good indicator, you will not experience any problems with it. It is enough to put a finger, and the screen will come to life, you will see the main menu.

The quality of fingerprint recognition is good, even wet hands are recognized without problems. For most manufacturers in the models of late 2016 - early 2017, this parameter has improved markedly, the technology has become mature. In total, you can register up to 5 fingerprints, which is more than enough.

Huawei has also expanded the capabilities of the fingerprint sensor. You can answer a call by touching the sensor (finger registration is not required), turn off the alarm. You can also swipe on it to open the notifications panel, double-tap, clear all notifications in the curtain, swipe up to close the panel. When viewing photos in the gallery, you can scroll through them using the sensor, just swipe left or right.

Access to individual applications can be allowed only by recognizing your finger, which is also convenient, this gives additional protection. You can also create a "Private" section where your files, such as photos, will be encrypted.

The body of the phone is made of metal, on the front surface there is 2.5D glass (the manufacturer is not specified, but it is tempered, Corning Gorilla Glass 3 level). Huawei initially supplies the device with a protective film attached, it is of good quality, so film lovers will be satisfied.

The device has three colors - silver, dark gray and gold.

At the same time, the front panel is white, very pleasing to the eye, there is nothing to complain about. Despite the fact that the design of the device is typical and similar to dozens of other models, it looks nice. Take a look at the photos of Honor 6X together with Lenovo K6 Note for comparison, they are the same type of devices with the same cost.

You can see that the design is confusingly similar, it has become dominant in this price segment.

There is a 3.5 mm jack on the top end, a microUSB connector on the bottom end, as well as symmetrical holes for speakers, although there is only one speaker. On the right side there is a paired volume rocker and an on/off button. On the left side is a SIM card tray (two nanoSIM cards or one card and a memory card).

There are no complaints about the assembly, everything is fine. The phone measures 150.9 x 76.2 x 8.2 mm and weighs 162 grams. It fits very well in the hand due to the rounding of the back, the ergonomics are excellent. The keys are on-screen only.

Display

Screen 5.5 inches, LPTS TFT, 1920x1080 pixels, 403 ppi, automatic brightness control, light sensor, additional protective sticker, 2.5D. Some models in this price group have AMOLED screens, they win in terms of power consumption. The very quality of the display in Honor 6X is excellent, if you watch it apart from classmates. For example, on Lenovo K6 Note the picture remains equally bright at any viewing angle, but in Honor it becomes a little whitish. But this can be seen only in direct comparison, in life this can not be noticed. Moreover, this can be considered a trifle and an outright nitpick, since, by and large, the screens are of the same class and are quite comparable.

To achieve low screen power consumption, Huawei has applied a fairly aggressive brightness control scheme. In automatic mode, the screen mainly has a backlight in the range of 20-40%, that is, it turns out that the colors are muted, not very bright. It all depends on your habits, for example, for me it is quite comfortable and does not cause any irritation, someone may think otherwise. Turning the screen to the maximum in manual mode will not work, the maximum display brightness of 450 nits is achieved only in automatic mode and in the sun (the display remains readable and everything can be seen well).

The screen quality on the Honor 6X is ultimately above average for this segment, and it has no flaws as such. Aggressive brightness reduction does not irritate, this is a feature of the device, which you quickly get used to, it is comfortable to work with the screen. I repeat once again that those who wish can unscrew the brightness in manual mode.

In the screen settings, you can select the color temperature, enable eye protection (yellow background for pictures), select the scale for standard applications and information in them. The brightening mode in the sun includes the maximum brightness of the backlight (the same 450 nits), in the off state, the backlight is limited to a level of 370-380 nits.

As you can see, the screen is not only not bad in itself, but a large number of service features have been added to it, which allow you to customize it for yourself.

Battery

Battery Li-Ion 3340 mAh, the stated operating time in mixed mode - about 2 days, music playback - up to 70 hours, in game mode - up to 8 hours. During the presentation, they talked a lot about the battery and even cited the iPhone 6 Plus as a comparison, which, of course, outperformed the Honor 6X in terms of battery life.

You can treat this data differently, but I can only find fault with one statement that the phone has fast charging. Under it, the company understands a conventional charger at 5V / 2A, which cannot be considered fast charging. By this, this device loses to its classmates, fast charging is present in all. The total battery charging time is 2 hours 40 minutes.

Now about the time of work. Claimed video viewing time is 11.5 hours. Running our standard test with MX Player and HD video at maximum brightness, I only got 6.5 hours of battery life. What surprised.

Subsequently, leaving automatic brightness control (it turned out to be approximately 40%), I got about 9.5 hours of video playback. The screen and its type is a weak point for the power consumption of this device: the higher the brightness of the display, the faster the battery drains. In other devices, this dependence is also present, but here it is more pronounced.

In everyday life, I used the automatic brightness for the screen (40%), it was comfortable for me. With fifteen minutes of calls a day, LTE data transmission turned on and browsing social networks, video (at least 15 minutes a day), the device worked for two days and a little. That is, even with the heaviest load (games and videos do not count), it will calmly last a full day of light. In my use case, the screen lasted about 5 hours in two days.

Compared to the Honor 5X, the progress is very noticeable, the battery life has approximately doubled, while the battery capacity has increased by only 10%. In many ways, the changes are related to the settings of the Kirin's own processor, which made it possible to achieve these changes. So expect this machine to be one to two days guaranteed, depending on your usage profile. In games, the result is about 6.5 hours with medium backlight, but it all depends on the game itself and the load on the processor. In my opinion, the results obtained are very good for the current market.

Of the minor errors, I note that someone messed up in estimating the working time of the dimension, therefore, at 2%, the battery predicts about 30 minutes of work, in fact it is 1-2 minutes, an inscription appears that the phone will turn off after 30 seconds, and it turns off.

Processor, memory, test results

I want to make a reservation right away that I have a model with 4 GB of RAM, while in Russia it is sold for 3 GB and 32 GB of internal memory. This means that the performance of the Russian phone is slightly less, but it differs by several times.

So, the Russian device (model code BLN-L21) has 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of built-in memory, memory cards up to 128 GB. HiSilicon Kirin 655 chipset, 8 cores (4 x 2.1 GHz + 4 x 1.7 GHz), Mali-T830 GPU. Many are distrustful of HiSilicon developments, simply not knowing them and not encountering them in practice. There are no quirks compared to better-known chipsets, nor does it feel like you're missing out or suffering from something.

In synthetic tests, the device shows the following performance.

Communication options

Let's start with the fact that Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n only works in one 2.4 GHz band, which is typical for this price segment. By analogy with Samsung devices, there is a Wi-Fi Bridge function when you connect via Wi-Fi to a network, and then distribute this connection to other devices in modem mode, the maximum number of devices is four.

NFC is present, which is not bad, Bluetooth version 4.1 (no ANT + support). USB 2.0 version, microUSB connector, as USB Type C customers in this price group do not need it.

With LTE frequencies, everything is typical (Band 1, 3, 7, 8, 20), there is no frequency aggregation, which is also expected, category 4 and a maximum download speed of up to 150 Mbps. For most buyers, this does not matter, unless you constantly download large files over the mobile network. In the US, on the AT&T network, I encountered the fact that the device simply refused to work in Los Angeles, the network was not found, in Las Vegas it worked in 3G mode. This is worth keeping in mind if you are traveling to the US and intend to use your phone there. As well as when buying a device from other markets, remember that, most likely, the set of LTE frequencies will not be suitable for Russia, you will get a headache.

There are no complaints about the work of GPS, a cold start takes about thirty seconds, and since A-GPS is constantly used, everything is completely instantaneous. Navigation quality is excellent.

Camera

The front camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels, the quality is typical for selfie cameras, there is nothing to scold or praise her for.

The main camera is dual and consists of a module of 12 megapixels and 2 megapixels. The main module is Sony IMX386, it has phase detection autofocus, focusing speed is 0.3 seconds. By using two cameras, you can blur the background and then focus on objects (works when objects are close). This is a separate shooting mode that must be activated in the camera menu. Below you can see how it works with examples. The aperture in this case changes from F / 0.95 to F / 16.

The camera interface is very simple, there is a professional mode where you can adjust the white balance, shutter speed and other settings, plus ready-made shooting modes, for example, for photographing food. The service capabilities of the camera are interesting, here shooting from a locked state using the side volume key (press twice), autofocus on a moving object and other settings.

I liked the capabilities of the camera, however, as well as the way it takes pictures. In its class, this is a very good camera, which definitely outperforms its classmates. However, evaluate the pictures yourself.

Work with two SIM-cards

The smartphone has one radio module and two slots for nanoSIM SIM cards. In the settings, you can set the "default" SIM card separately for calls and separately for mobile Internet, as well as assign a name to each "SIM card". When sending a text message or before making a call, you can choose which SIM card the action will be taken from. In the interface, everything for working with two SIM-cards is made simple and clear. One card is always 2G, the second is 2/3/4G.

Software features and software

The smartphone runs on Android 6.1, the proprietary Emotion UI, or, as it is now called, EMUI version 4.1, is used as the shell. In February, the company promises to update the version of Android to the seventh, and the version of EMUI will also be updated. This shell is very similar to MIUI, Flyme and the one that Lenovo uses in their devices, they are ideologically similar. There is no separate application menu here, all programs are collected on desktops.

There are several themes available in the settings, you can also upload new ones (throw theme installer files into a folder). From what I love about Huawei devices, I note the automatic change of wallpaper on the lock screen, these are new, colorful photos all the time.

Chinese manufacturer Huawei has risen to the top of the world in the production and sales of smartphones in recent years. Now it occupies the third place (10% of the world market). After successful sales of the smartphone Honor 5x decided to expand the line of models. Models up to Honor 10 inclusive are now available for sale. Each of them is slightly superior to the previous one in several ways, including the price. Let's get acquainted with the description of Huawei Honor 6X, its characteristics.

Honor 6X design

Considering the design of the Huawei Honor 6X phone, they compare it with the Honor 5X model. A noticeable improvement in appearance, sharp corners and ends have become rounded. The profile is narrow, thickness 8.2 mm. The color scheme remained almost the same: golden, silver, dark gray.

The difference from Honor 5X is a white frame on the front panel of light cases. In some places it does not fit snugly against the screen. The case is declared as all-metal. But upon inspection, it is noticeable that only the central part of the cover is made of metal. The upper and lower end parts, on which the connectors and speakers are located, are plastic. They differ from the main part of the cover in color and texture. Fingerprints on the case do not remain.

At the back, a dual main camera block stands out. Next to the fingerprint scanner window. Compared to 5X, 6X adds the ability to store up to 5 fingerprints. You can answer the call and turn off the alarm without unlocking by simply touching the scanner. Double tap clears notifications in the curtain. Photos are viewed with horizontal movements. The work of the scanner is not satisfactory.

There are no touch hardware buttons under the screen. The front is covered with 2.5D glass. Above the screen are a front camera for selfies, an event indicator. Phone Honor 6X works with two SIM cards. But first you need to make a choice between a second Nano-SIM card and a microSD memory card. This is not a very convenient feature of Huawei smartphones. Possible "hot" swap sim without turning on the phone.

The volume keys on the side panel are large and work smoothly. On the bottom end panel there is a USB OTG connector for connecting a flash drive. Nearby is one of the speakers. The second microphone is on the top panel. There is also a headphone jack.

Screen

Screen characteristics are shown in the table:

The display does not have an oleophobic coating or it is very thin, so the finger glides over it tightly, leaving greasy marks. There is no air layer between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix. Therefore, it looks good in bright sunlight. But it will not be possible to repair the screen after the impact, you will have to change the whole one.

The maximum brightness in manual setting is high. The screen is anti-reflective and does not flicker. You can read the text even on the street on a sunny day. The image does not change colors even when heavily tilted. The white color is uniform and bright, which cannot be said about black. When deviated from the perpendicular direction, it brightens. The colors on the screen of the huawei honor 6x phone correspond to the real ones, but it is possible to adjust them as you like on the color wheel.

Specifications

The main technical characteristics of the Honor 6X smartphone are shown in the table:

The Android 6.0 operating system can be upgraded to the eighth version. The EMUI 4.1 proprietary shell makes it possible to move the control buttons on the display, change themes, add new ones. Users consider the lack of a separate application menu to be a disadvantage. The desktop size can be reduced to make it easier to work with one hand. There is a button to quickly call the main functions.

In EMUI, it is possible to display the network speed, the name of the operator, the setting of the “do not disturb” mode. There is a panel for quick launch of the calculator, voice recorder, flashlight.

The HiSilicon Kirin 655 single-chip system is made using 16 nm technology. If we compare the huawei honor 6x phone with the 5X model, the frequency of the older cluster is increased by 0.1 GHz.

Communications

Smartphone Honor 6x supports frequencies:

  • LTE Cat.4 (download speed up to 150 Mbps)
  • LTE FDD (5 bands)
  • Wi-Fi is only supported in the 2.4GHz band
  • Bluetooth 4.1
  • NFC supports work with electronic travel cards
  • Navigation can be done via GPS (with A-GPS), Glonass or Chinese Beidou

Through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, you can create a wireless Internet access point. The Wi-Fi Bridge feature allows you to connect to one network and then distribute the connection to other devices.

cameras

Smartphone Huawei Honor 6X has multiple cameras. The main one, at 12 megapixels, has a Sony IMX386 module and an f / 2.2 lens. The camera is responsible for covering the area being filmed when taking photos and videos. Phase detection autofocus is fast. There is no stabilization either when shooting video or when photographing. The Honor 6X camera has a pixel size of 1.25 microns.

Next to the main camera is an additional 2 megapixel, with a wide-angle lens. It is responsible for the depth of the frame and is used to create a bokeh effect (background blur). To do this, open the aperture wider (range f / 0.95 - f / 16). After shooting, you can evaluate the photo and, if necessary, change the focus of the frame. In this case, the focus may be on an object located in the foreground or in the background.

When you select the second shooting method, controls appear on the screen that allow you to change the shutter speed, sensitivity, and focus options. You can save photos in RAW format, that is, unprocessed, "raw", containing all the information about the picture.

The maximum resolution in Full HD video format allows you to shoot 30 frames per second. The quality of the shooting is quite good, including brightness, sharpness, highlighting details. The sound is transmitted qualitatively, wind noise and extraneous sounds are extinguished by the noise reduction system. There is a slow motion mode.

The front camera with a wide lens coverage (77°) and f/2.0 aperture does not have a flash. Pictures are sharp in the center, details are crisp, colors are natural. The edges are not very sharp. It is possible to decorate the portrait, change the white balance. The focus cannot be changed after shooting with the camera.

The main camera does not reach the level of more modern Huawei models. The Honor 6X's shots fall short compared to the P9's.

Battery and Charging

Smartphone Honor 6X is powered by a non-removable battery with a capacity of 3340 mAh. One charge with moderate use is enough for a couple of days. The manufacturer claims that you can read books at a brightness of 100 cd / m2 for 15 hours, watch high-quality video via Wi-Fi for 11.5 hours. The battery from games runs out faster, the charge lasts only 4.5 hours.

In fact, video at 40% brightness can be watched for only 9.5 hours. The higher the screen brightness, the faster the battery drains. Compared to the 5X model, the operating time on a single charge has increased by 2 times, and the battery capacity has increased by 10%. This happened thanks to the settings of the Kirin 655 processor (model 650 for Honor 5X).

Honor 6x is one of the most popular smartphones from Huawei last year. He caused a real sensation among those who want to get a powerful and inexpensive smartphone that meets all the requirements of comfort and quality.

The manufacturer did not fail by offering a powerful phone in an aluminum case, with an excellent dual camera and a solid mid-range price on the market. Let's understand together with you why this smartphone is one of the best budget representatives of the market even a year after the announcement?

Price and main characteristics

At the time of writing the review in 2018, the average price tag for the Honor 6x model was $190 or 10,750 rubles. Depending on the supplier and the country of purchase, the price of a smartphone did not change significantly. But, despite the difference in price in different markets, the fact remains one: with its characteristics, this model is one of the best representatives of the budget price category.

Why Honor 6x is called the best smartphone in the budget market? Let's see.

Equipment and appearance

Huawei is no different from most of its peers, who use ordinary thick cardboard when creating their packaging boxes. A simple, blue-painted box is not designed to extort money out of you on a "wow" effect. Everything is as simple as possible and without unnecessary pathos, and solely to ensure that the smartphone reaches the end consumer safe and sound.

The phone package includes:

  • The phone itself;
  • Clip to remove the SIM tray;
  • Quality charger (5V/2A) with USB cable;
  • A small instruction manual.

The most simple equipment, without unnecessary pathos and useless additional low-quality accessories, as is often the case with other manufacturers.

The design of the device is not much different from previous lines and all modern smartphones in general. Laconic appearance and classic shape will appeal to those who appreciate simplicity and ease of use. The choice of the consumer is offered two variations: in silver and gold color of the back cover. Regardless of the choice, the front remains white. If desired, the consumer will be able to find a rare gray version with a black front panel online.

Screen

In the Honor 6x smartphone, the manufacturer installed a 5.5-inch display with a Full HD resolution of 1080 × 1920 pixels. An excellent addition to such a screen was the image density of 403 DPI, which guarantees the absence of ripples and pixels at any image intensity on the screen. The display brightness margin will be more than enough for reading and surfing the web in direct sunlight. The viewing angles here are also good and allow you to easily look at the display at any degree of inclination.

Performance

In the Honor 6X smartphone, the company fits everything that is required for comfortable operation. First of all, this model is distinguished by the use of the new HiSilicon Kirin 655 platform, which guarantees increased efficiency and reduced space requirements.

The phones of this model presented on the Russian market are equipped with 3 GB of RAM and up to 32 GB of storage with support for expanding the volume from MicroSD up to 128 GB.

Synthetic tests of such a filling show satisfactory results and are at the level of many much more expensive devices.

Camera

The front camera of the Honor X6 has a fairly wide range of settings and has an 8-megapixel sensor with a wide-angle 77-degree lens. Lack of sensitivity can be corrected by manually adjusting the scale up to 1600 ISO.

The rear camera of the smartphone has acquired a high-quality Sony IMX386 module with a 12-megapixel matrix and F / 2.2 aperture. Fast phase-type autofocus, bright single-color flash and a 2-megapixel secondary camera guarantee juicy photos of a decent level. It will be hard to find better for this price! In addition to high-quality filling, the manufacturer offers a wide range of different settings and modes that make life easier for a novice photographer.

speaker, sound quality

Despite two cutouts on the bottom of the smartphone, there is only one physical speaker (on the right). Despite this shortcoming, the phone plays really balanced and pleasant. Watching videos, listening to music and playing applications here will be a pleasure both indoors and outdoors.

When listening to music with headphones, the phone connects SWS surround sound technology, which provides decent sound. Established tools easily reproduce the FLAC format without losing quality.

Battery

In the Honor 6X model, manufacturers installed a good non-removable battery with a capacity of 3340 mAh. The manufacturer and the owners of the phone themselves claim that with balanced use, the battery will last for a whole day. Surfing the Internet, chatting in social networks and instant messengers, a couple of tens of minutes of voice communication and shooting several videos is the minimum reserve of what a smartphone can offer on a single charge.

The PCMark test showed that at the maximum load of the smartphone, it can last up to 9-10 hours. In practice, the result is a little more pessimistic: in 1 hour of playing at full brightness with Wi-Fi turned on, the phone lost more than 20% of the charge. And when watching a movie in Full HD in flight mode, our copy worked for 7 hours of continuous playback.

Communication and Internet

The communication filling of Honor 6X includes support for LTE 4 at speeds up to 150 Mbps, five different LTE frequencies and 3 well-known communication bands that work perfectly on the territory of the Russian Federation. In the city limits, this means perfect communication for the phone and high quality of the incoming and outgoing signal. Outside the city, the signal is a little lost, but still shows decent results.

Smartphone communication also offers a single Wi-Fi band at 2.4 GHz, support for Bluetooth 4.1, the ability to create a Wi-Fi HotSpot hotspot, and other useful goodies. The smart A-GPS module, which has domestic Glonass maps and the Chinese version of Beidou, is responsible for navigating the smartphone. In addition to everything, the developers offer owners of Honor 6x the presence of a magnetic compass and mediocre satellite detection speed on a cold start (up to 1 minute).

Like many new products in 2017, the phone has its own NFC module. The presented module can work with a large number of devices that support this technology, including electronic travel cards. For the Micro-USB connector, the developers have implemented support for external devices by connecting via OTG, which allows you to use Honor 6x as a charger or read full-size flash drives with it.

The Huawei Honor 6X smartphone was officially announced in October 2016. This device belongs to the middle class, and is also the ideological successor of the inexpensive 5X model. This device has been on sale in China since the very beginning, and then will appear in other countries.

Appearance and ergonomics

The device immediately resembles the rest of the representatives of this line. Therefore, the design of Huawei Honor 6X is concise and simple, which is traditional for the entire series. The body is made of soft-touch aluminum with rounded corners. Under the screen and on the back side, the Honor logo flaunts. Also on the back you can see a block with a dual camera. A little lower is a round-shaped fingerprint scanner. An affordable smartphone is available not only in silver, but also in gold. The gadget is comfortable to hold in hands due to the matte metal, which is rough. Although in a small palm, the device can be difficult to fit due to the large screen.

Display

Honor 6X has a fairly massive 5.5-inch display. With Full HD resolution and an advanced IPS matrix, you can enjoy the picture non-stop. The screen is distinguished by the correct color reproduction, as well as a serious level of saturation and contrast. Since IPS technology is used here, everything is in order with viewing angles.

Hardware and performance

The fairly new Kirin 650 processor with eight cores provides good performance. This chip is not only 64-bit, but also made on a 16-nanometer technical process. This step allowed to reduce power consumption, as well as improve the performance of the smartphone. The maximum operating frequency of the Kirin 650 reaches 2000 MHz. Graphics are handled by the Mali-T830 MP2 chip. The Honor 6X has 3 GB of RAM, and the user is given 32 GB for file storage. The space can be expanded with MicroSD cards up to 256 GB. The smartphone uses the Android 6.0 operating system, and also uses the EMUI 4.1 shell.

The device confidently copes with most everyday tasks. In the AnTuTu test, the new Huawei Honor 6X scores about 55,000 points, which is an approximate result of two-year-old flagships. In games, there is enough power to run projects at medium or high graphics settings. In ordinary applications and menus, the speed of work will please every user.

Communication and sound

Thanks to the modern processor, Huawei Honor 6X supports not only third-generation networks, but also LTE Cat 6. The connection quality is very good. Pleasantly surprised by the loud multimedia speaker. It is also pleasant to talk with the interlocutor. It is quite possible to listen to music on headphones, but one should hardly expect any miracles.

Camera

The manufacturer decided to place in Honor 6X a progressive 12-megapixel camera with two modules at once. This option was used not only in Honor 8, but also in the flagship P9. The pictures are really high quality, and good results can be achieved even in low light. Flexible settings and advanced functionality are included. The 8-megapixel front camera, literally created for fans of self-portraits, deserves positive epithets.

conclusions

Honor 6X is a really interesting solution for $250. The smartphone has an excellent filling, which provides decent performance. A large amount of memory and a really cool camera also play in favor of this sturdy mid-ranger. As for the delivery set, it is standard for such gadgets.

Pros:

  • Large and bright screen.
  • Double camera.
  • Fast processor.
  • Lots of memory.
  • Very attractive price.

Minuses:

  • Pretty normal looking.

Video reviews

Traditionally, it performs strongly in the middle segment of the smartphone market. After the creation of the Honor brand, these positions were strengthened even more and, as a result, not so long ago, the company's share in the global smart phone market was about 10%, which allowed the company to take third place among global manufacturers.

If you think about it, 10% is a very large share, and it is simply unrealistic to achieve such results by chance. One of the main forges of this success was the phone Honor 5x, which became a real bestseller in the mid-budget segment of the smartphone market. And at the beginning of 2017, its successor Honor 6x saw the light.

The official release date for Honor 6x in Russia is January 17, 2017. The phone immediately became quite popular and we can say that the 5x received a worthy replacement. But what exactly is 6x good for and what is it worth appreciating? Or perhaps the smartphone has been overrated and not worth the attention it has been given? In this article, we offer you our Huawei 6x review, in which we will try to analyze the capabilities of the smartphone and answer these intriguing questions.

Before starting a detailed Huawei Honor 6x review, you should first take a close look at its technical specifications, which will tell us about the basic capabilities of the smartphone under review:

  • Single-chip system: Processor - eight-core HiSilicon Kirin 655 with a clock frequency of 4x2.1 GHz and 4x1.7 GHz. Cortex A-53 cores, 16nm manufacturing process. Graphics accelerator - dual-core Mali-T830 MP2;
  • Screen: 5.5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1080 × 1920 pixels and a pixel density of 403 ppi;
  • Operating system: Android version 6.0 plus proprietary shell EMUI 4.1. (Update to Android 7 and EMUI 5.0 in February);
  • Memory: RAM - 3 GB, built-in memory - 32 GB, memory card support - micro-SD up to 128 GB;
  • Communication: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz || UMTS 900/1900/2100 MHz || LTE Band 1, 3, 7, 8, 20, SIM cards - nano-SIM + nano-SIM (combo slot);
  • Wireless interfaces: Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, FM radio, NFC;

  • Battery: Capacity 3340 mAh, non-removable;
  • Dimensions: Size - 76.2x150.9x8.2 mm, Weight - 162 grams.

As you can see, the smartphone has almost everything to be called an honest mid-budget device. At first glance, the phone is quite worthy of the money that was asked for it at the beginning of sales, and even more money that they want for it now. But, as they say, the first impression can be deceiving, so let's move on to a more detailed analysis.

Equipment

The smartphone is already traditionally for mid-range Honor models comes in a beautiful turquoise box with a bright, but nevertheless very strict design. The phone package includes:

  • The smartphone itself
  • A clip to remove the SIM card tray;
  • Charger (5V/2A) with USB cable;
  • User's Manual.

Everything is done quite qualitatively, however, it will not work to call the package something else, except as standard. The box contains only the minimum necessary equipment for the operation of the device. At the same time, it would be very nice in this price range to find additionally, for example, headphones, a rear bumper, or at least a microfiber cloth to clean the screen.

Design

Huawei Honor 6x can be bought in colors such as: gray, silver and gold. This color scheme is already familiar to fans of Huawei phones in general and the Honor brand in particular. The most beautiful, in our opinion, turned out to be a golden smartphone. The color looks noble, plays with shades in the sun and goes very well with the white front of the smartphone. By the way, for some reason the 6x line is not made in the same style. The gold and silver phones have a white front, while the gray phone has a front panel in the color of the whole case. This is odd, to say the least, as the previous 5x line had a consistent design and each phone had a body-colored front bezel.

If we evaluate the entire design of the device as a whole, then the phone does not look unusual. Before us is a completely standard phablet, which on the market in this segment can be found very, very much. But the devil, as they say, is in the details. After holding the phone in your hands for at least fifteen minutes, you begin to notice how beautiful it is and how comfortable it is in your hand. Honor successfully plays on the combination of colors, the appearance of the phone is well emphasized by beveled edges, an unusual dual camera and the design of other functional elements of the device. In addition, thanks to the rounded back, the phone is comfortable to hold in your hand, it does not slip and does not cut into the palm, and the metal cover, in turn, gives a feeling of pleasant coolness.

On the manufacturer's website, the case of Honor 6x is described as all-metal, but in fact, Huawei is a little cunning in this regard. In fact, only the back cover is made of pure metal in the smartphone, while the top, bottom, and also the front under the glass are completely plastic. But if the plastic layer in front is quite understandable as a gasket under the glass, then the top and bottom plastic elements serve not just as inserts, but are the end parts of the case, in which all connectors and functional elements are installed, such as a headphone jack and a USB port. The desire of the company in this way to reduce the cost of a smartphone is understandable, but the desire to wishful thinking is not clear. It's not good to do that, gentlemen marketers.

Also, the phone has rather wide top and bottom bezels, as for a mid-budget smartphone. In Honor 6x there are no functional touch or mechanical buttons on the lower front panel and instead of them, the inscription “Honor” flaunts on the phone. We have already talked about this in one of the previous reviews, but it is not a sin to repeat that this is excusable only for a state employee. In the same price category, allocating so much space just for the inscription and at the same time depriving the user of part of the usable screen space with virtual buttons is wasteful.

As for other functional elements, everything is according to the standard. In front we have a speaker, a front camera, light and proximity sensors, as well as an indicator of missed events. Behind the main dual camera, a single LED flash and a fingerprint scanner slightly recessed into the body. On the right side are a very comfortable and pleasant to the touch lock key and volume rocker, which, when double-clicked, also serves as a quick capture button. On the reverse side is a combined tray for SIM cards and a micro-SD memory card. At the bottom are slots for speakers, one of which is purely decorative, a micro-USB connector for connecting charging and external devices, and at the top there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a noise-canceling microphone. As you can see, everything you need is in place, however, this layout is already very well known to fans of the Honor brand.

In general, we really liked the design of the Honor 6x and, although the smartphone does not seem particularly durable, we have no particular complaints about it. Of course, I would like a real all-metal body with narrower frames, but it is noticeable that the designers tried and eventually made the smartphone very pretty.

Display

Honor 6x is equipped with a high-quality 5.5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels and a pixel density of 403 ppi. Due to such screen sizes, managing a smartphone with one hand is a bit complicated, but as a multimedia device it looks very attractive. The clarity of the screen is at a very high level, the colors are natural and do not cut the eye. If desired, the owners of this phone can use it in virtual reality systems with high-quality lenses, although, of course, the phone itself was not intended for such purposes.

The maximum brightness of the 6x display is at the level of 520 cd / m 2, which, combined with a high-quality anti-reflective coating, allows you to use your smartphone in bright daylight. There is also an automatic brightness control, which sets the adequate backlight intensity depending on the external lighting conditions and works quite quickly. The viewing angles of this Honor model are excellent, at sharp angles the image practically does not lose its quality. Even if there are some changes in the palette and contrast, it is very difficult to catch this difference without comparison with a more expensive device.

The screen offers a good image contrast, the white color is transmitted correctly, it is not "snow white", but it does not turn yellow or violet at all, while it is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the display. The black color, of course, is not of such high quality, but it is quite consistent with the level of the best IPS matrices. As mentioned earlier, the colors are rendered close to natural, the default color temperature is shifted closer to cool shades, but the phone is equipped with a very convenient program for adjusting this parameter, with which the owner can choose the color temperature to his liking. The phone does not have an air gap between the glass and the matrix, the colors are even, no flickering was noticed.

The smartphone recognizes up to ten touches simultaneously in multi-touch format. Also, due to the very high sensitivity of the sensor, the phone is very well suited for games. However, questions arise about the oleophobic coating of the device. Right out of the box, the screen of the device is covered with a protective film, but if you remove it, the prints begin to accumulate quickly, and the finger in the same games slides not so comfortably. Based on this, we can conclude that the oleophobic coating is either completely absent, or very mediocre.

In general, the screen of the Honor 6x is of fairly high quality and is in line with the price category of the smartphone. Huawei engineers could not avoid some disadvantages, but this display has much more advantages. In the end, we were satisfied with it and move on with peace of mind.

Sound

The sound of the 6x is clean, smooth, but at the same time quite simple. Yes, engineers in this case can be understood, no matter how much we would like surround sound in the middle segment, so far only a few companies can offer this, often saving on other functions. So it turns out that 6x still strives for high sounds, while mid and low frequencies, as always, are not enough. In headphones, the sound of the smartphone does not improve much, there is still no full coverage of the sound range, while we also did not observe extraneous noise, the volume of the device is enough to shout out the ambient noise with a large margin.

The smartphone, as standard for Honor models, is equipped with a proprietary player, but it still lacks manual settings. Of the pluses, one can single out the presence of a karaoke mode and FM radio.

cameras

In the Honor 6x smartphone, as well as in the more premium devices of the company, two modules are installed simultaneously in the main camera. True, it is worth noting that this is not such an advanced tandem as, say, in Huawei P10. The second 6x camera is a module with a resolution of only 2 megapixels, which is designed for beautiful, high-quality blurring of backgrounds when shooting with the “wide aperture” effect. And it should be said that it copes with its function with a bang, when focusing on close objects or macro photography, the background blurs really very well, it is very difficult to achieve such an effect using only software blur. If desired, the user can adjust the blur effect to a very wide range or disable it altogether.

The first camera, in fact, is the main one, it is equipped with a 12-megapixel module and f / 2.2 aperture. The camera is equipped with fast phase detection autofocus, which focuses on the subject very clearly and almost instantly. There is also a single-color LED flash, which does not spoil the porridge at all in low-light shooting conditions.

Photos taken with this camera are of good quality. The reproduction of colors is close to natural, the sharpness of the frame is at a high level, the resolution of the matrix is sufficient for detailing both distant plans and close objects in macro photography. In low-light shooting conditions, the camera also positively surprised. There is practically no digital noise in the frame, and if necessary, noise can be hidden by software, almost without sacrificing image clarity.

As always, Huawei's proprietary program has a lot of different effects for photography, as well as a variety of decorations, including: HDR, night shooting, panorama, "Delicious food", "Light". If desired, the user can select a professional mode and fine-tune the white balance, shutter speed, exposure compensation, sensitivity, and many other parameters with their own hands.

The main camera can also record video in FullHD format at 30 frames per second. The quality of the picture and sound pleased no less than the photo before it. The picture is clear, extraneous noise is effectively eliminated, the only thing that added a "fly in the ointment" is the lack of optical stabilization, which would obviously come in handy when shooting on the move. Also, the camera can shoot slow-motion video at a resolution of 640x480 and at a recording speed of 120 frames per second.

The phone is equipped with an 8-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture, fixed focus and no flash of its own. The camera has a portrait beautification mode and also has a smile detection function, which is very convenient. In general, the capabilities of the front camera are practically not inferior to those of the main one, you just have to make allowances for a much lower resolution, the absence of an additional module, autofocus and flash. Selfie lovers should be pleased.

Memory and memory card

Honor 6x exists in two versions: 3/32 and 4/64 gigabytes of RAM and permanent memory, respectively. However, only the junior model with 3 gigabytes of RAM and 32 gigabytes of flash memory is supplied to the Russian market.

Such characteristics today are the norm for the mid-budget segment, and entering this market with less memory is simply not self-respecting. Huawei is well aware of this and emphasizes, hoping that the buyer will be attracted by tempting numbers in the characteristics. As for the technical side, three gigabytes of RAM is currently enough for all tasks and there is even a small margin for the future, so you don’t have to worry about this parameter for now.

The permanent memory is available to the user about 24 gigabytes out of 32. And this is actually a reason to think about buying a memory card. Of course, on-board flash memory is much faster than a removable card, but 24 gigabytes in modern conditions can run out pretty quickly if you don’t keep track of the free space. By the way, 6x supports memory cards up to 128 gigabytes, but when using it, you will have to sacrifice a second SIM card, since the SIM card tray is combined. Here are the things.

Connection

Huawei Honor 6x supports LTE Band 1, 3, 7, 8, 20, as well as GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz and UMTS 900/1900/2100 MHz networks. The smartphone catches the network confidently, without significant interruptions in reception. The signal strength is equally good both in the city and outside the city. The interlocutor is heard well, there are no extraneous noises, the connection is not interrupted.

The phone also has Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.1 wireless modules, which work without any complaints with good speed. The NFC module is also present, which will undoubtedly please people who are used to using their smartphone as a travel card in public transport and beyond. Among the navigation satellites, the phone supports such devices as: GPS, GLONASS and BDS. Signal reception is good, even if you try to connect while inside the building. The first few satellites can be expected to be caught within one or two minutes.

Battery life and performance

Honor 6x is equipped with Huawei's proprietary HiSilicon Kirin 655 processor. This is an eight-core chip built on Cortex A-53 cores using a 16-nanometer process technology and has a frequency formula of 4x2.1 GHz and 4x1.7 GHz. This chipset is quite consistent with the mid-budget segment and demonstrates the expected level of performance. Today, it is more than enough for everyday tasks such as surfing the Internet, watching videos and listening to music. If we compare this processor with other colleagues in the shop, then the most similar chip is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, which shows similar results in everyday tasks. In the Antutu benchmark, Kirin scores 57,000 points, which is an acceptable result for such a processor.

We bring to your attention a summary table of test results for several mid-range single-chip systems.

Benchmark Honor 6X
(HiSilicon Kirin 655)
Lenovo K6 Note
(Qualcomm Snapdragon 430)
Asus Zenfone 3
(Qualcomm Snapdragon 625)
Umi Plus

GeekBench (v4.x) 787/3300 635/2071 831/4092 682/2603 1346/3271

The Kirin 655 single-chip system is equipped with a Mali-T830 MP2 graphics accelerator, which is enough to comfortably play most modern heavy games at medium graphics settings. For example, let's take the popular online game World of Tanks Blitz, in which our test subject at medium settings and with a resolution of 1920x1080 confidently produces 50-55 frames per second. In lighter projects, such as the game Asphalt 8, the chip provides stable 60 frames per second without any problems or freezes.

As for the autonomy of the device, the results of 6x fit well with our idea of them. The 3340 milliamp-hour battery is quite confidently enough for two days of work with moderate use. Also, the phone feels pretty good when reading and listening to music, but in games the battery still "melts" before our eyes, the large screen and a rather powerful processor affect. In total, you can expect from your smartphone: in reading mode - 15 hours, in video mode - 10 hours 30 minutes, in game mode - 4 hours 30 minutes.

Operating system

Initially, the phone came preinstalled with the Android 6.0 operating system and the proprietary EMUI 4.1 shell. However, soon, namely in February of the same year, Honor 6x received an official over-the-air update to the Android 7.0 operating system and the proprietary EMUI 5.0 shell.

Outcome

Summing up, we can say that the Honor 6x phone really turned out to be very good and became a worthy replacement for its predecessor Honor 5x. But to buy it now or not, this is already a much more difficult task for the mind. Now the 7x version is already available on the market, which looks more modern and interesting, but it also costs much more. On the other hand, 6x today can be bought for 12,000 and even 11,500 rubles. If you manage to find this smartphone at such prices and already with an updated operating system, then this will be a very good purchase.

Pros of Honor 6x:

  • High-quality display;
  • Good dual camera;
  • Great autonomy;
  • Good processor.

Cons of Honor 6x:

  • Fake "all-metal" case;
  • Weak oleophobic coating.
