So we could determine the diagonal of the screen by eye and decide for ourselves whether it is too much or too little. But usually phones and tablets are indicated in inches. Therefore, we often hear from customers: “Diagonal 7 inches - how much is it?” Let's understand these units of measurement once and for all.
Diagonal 7 inches - how much is it in centimeters?
The easiest way to figure it out is to convert inches to centimeters. Connoisseurs know that one inch is equal to 2.54 centimeters. Based on this, it is easy to calculate how much a 7-inch diagonal is. It will be equal to 17.78 centimeters. Take a regular ruler and see what kind of segment it is. In the future, if you don’t understand the diagonal, you can convert inches to centimeters yourself: just multiply the value by 2.5. This can be done even in your mind. If you have a calculator, multiply by 2.54. This will be more accurate.
TV diagonal
If you are trying to choose a TV, then one of the important parameters is its length between two opposite edges - bottom and top. This is the diagonal of the TV. Modern models are available with different diagonals. There are very large TVs, the diagonal of which is 50 inches or more. But the models that are now the most popular and widespread have a diagonal of 32 inches. This is the “golden mean” between a huge cinema and a small model for the kitchen.
But as for seven inches, this is extremely small for a TV. Perhaps there are no such models with such a miniature diagonal. However, there are special ones on the market or for travel, but such devices have been popular for a long time. Now they are being replaced by tablets.
Tablet screen size
It is worth noting that most tablets are 7 inches. This category usually includes inexpensive budget models which are in greatest demand. They fit perfectly in the hand, making them easy to control. It is not necessary to install a matrix in such a diagonal with high resolution, which reduces the cost of the tablet itself.
The most popular 7-inch models are:

There are also models from the popular Korean manufacturer Samsung. It would take a long time to list them, but the fact is that a 7-inch diagonal is ideal for an inexpensive budget tablet.
There is another category - gadgets with a diagonal of 9-10 inches. The tone for this “fashion” was set by the manufacturer Apple, which in 2010 introduced a tablet with a 10″ diagonal to the market. And although in fact it’s only 9.7″, no one cares about it anymore. Many modern gadgets with this diagonal are positioned as 10-inch tablets.
There are other models with 12-inch screens, but these are already rare.
Cell phones
If you still can’t imagine how big a 7-inch diagonal is, then visualize a smartphone that barely fits in one hand. This phone has approximately the same diagonal. But this is also rare, because most mobile phones are equipped with 5-inch screens. There are also versions with 5.5-inch screens. 6-inch smartphones are rare, and there are very few models with 7-inch matrices.

However, there are different stories regarding how such a measure of length came to be used in different countries. An inch represents 1/36 of a yard, which in turn was recognized as the official measure of length - from the tip of the nose to the thumb of the outstretched hand of King Henry the First. There was also a legal inch, the length of which was equal to the length of three barley grains. In general, there are many options, but most of them are somehow related to the thumb.
What is measured in inches
Accordingly, inches were slightly different in each country, with some having multiple national variations of the inch. Today, the English inch used in the USA is adopted as the standard. So now, seeing that the screen is 7 inches diagonal, “How many centimeters?” - this is not a question you will ask, since you already know the answer.
All equipment is measured in these inches - in most cases these are screens, but there can also be, for example, floppy disks. But in other areas, inches are also sometimes used all over the world - for example, when measuring the diagonal of car rims.

iPhone 7 Plus Dimensions
Naturally, with a 5.5-inch iPhone panel 7 Plus has larger dimensions. The length of its metal structure reaches 15.82 cm, width 7.79 cm, and thickness 0.73 cm. Considering the difference in screen sizes, the iPhone 7 is noticeably more compact than its brother, but the 4.7-inch model loses to the 5.5-inch, although by a small margin. As you may have noticed, the screen-to-body ratio on the iPhone 7 Plus is slightly better: 67.89% versus 65.82%. This suggests that a larger device makes better use of front panel space.

A similar situation is observed when comparing the sizes of the iPhone 7 Plus and OnePlus 3: the Chinese brand has made its product more compact, although not so thin.
Apple iPhone 7 below and thinner than Galaxy S7, although its diagonal is much smaller. It also loses to the “Korean” in terms of the volume of the built-in battery. The thickness of the Samsung flagship is 0.79 cm, the width of its body reaches 6.96 cm, and the height is 14.24 cm. OnePlus 3, naturally, loses to the seventh iPhone in all these parameters, but its screen is much larger.
Conventionally, tablets can be divided into two types based on display size: widescreen 16:10 and taller 3:4. We will talk only about the most well-known formats, because there are a lot of non-standard ones, and there is no point in talking about all of them.
7 inches, (16:10). The most common and affordable tablets now are seven-inch ones with an aspect ratio of 16:10. Tablets with such screens are small-sized and easy to transport. They are convenient to take with you on a hike, to a cafe, for a walk, and even at work. Most often used for watching movies and playing games. Also, such tablets are bought for children - they are the lightest. Also suitable for reading. For those who often type texts, it may seem inconvenient - the keyboard will take up half the screen, and there will be little space left for the workspace. You can cheat a little - turn the tablet into portrait orientation, and then the keyboard will take up less space. But in this case, it will be difficult to hit the right numbers and letters.
7 inches, (3:4). An uncommon combination of diagonal and aspect ratio. It is inconvenient to watch movies on such displays because there will be a lot of space left on the top and bottom of the display. free space. Tablets of this format did not become widespread, but their place was successfully taken by 8-inch tablets with a 3:4 ratio.
8 inches (16:10). Such tablets will be an excellent option for those who need a compact device, but seven inches is still not enough, and “square” 3;4 are not recognized. People also call this combination of aspect ratio and diagonal the “golden mean.” And more “seven”, and while watching movies there will be no black stripes on the screen, like the “square eight”.
8 inches, (3:4). Columbus discovered America, and Apple was the first to set the fashion for mass production of tablets with such a diagonal and aspect ratio. Firstly, such tablets are very convenient to read; they are even comparable in shape and size to a regular book. 9 inches (16:10). This format has not gained widespread popularity. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems this is due to the fact that the most famous manufacturers of popular products still do not have in their arsenal tablet computers with such a diagonal. In terms of dimensions, and even in size, 8- and 9-inch ones are not so different, so for comfortable viewing films you can safely choose between them.
9.7 inches (3:4). A very popular format, and again, at the expense of the Apple company. Most suitable for working with office programs, and of course for surfing the Internet. But it is not advisable to use this tablet for games and reading. It’s possible, but it’s difficult due to its size and weight—you won’t be able to hold it with one hand for long. And it’s not always convenient to drag such a “bambula” with you somewhere. For such tablets, they often buy a stand, a keyboard, and even a mouse as an additional accessory, and use it for work. 10 - 10.1 inches (16:10). I don't really understand what these tablets are for. One thing I can say is that they are suitable for those who need a tablet with a wide screen and a large diagonal, but who don’t like the square 9.7-inch one.
