How to put the modem in router mode. Proper ADSL modem setup

I work in those support of a large urban provider, I regularly hear a question about the possibility of setting up a modem issued by the provider not in transparent bridge mode, but in router mode with PPTP VPN connection up. One night, there was nothing special to do and I decided to try out whether it is actually possible and how it works. Actually under the cut how I did it.

It was made as accessible and detailed as possible so that you can give a link.

Training

I tested on a D-Link DSL 2500U / BRU / D modem. On the firmware with which he came to me, there was no functionality for "raising" the connection via PPTP, therefore, using a little googling, I found the firmware in which it is, and in which it works - (I downloaded the file with the firmware to myself in case D -Link will remove it from their FTP). In earlier versions, PPTP is buggy, in later versions it was removed.

Now you need to reset the modem settings. Behind the modem there is a small hole in which the "reset" button is hidden. It is necessary to use a needle or other thin elongated object (toothpick, pen rod) to press and hold this button for about 7 seconds. After that, only the "Status" indicator will remain on the modem, and the modem will "go into reboot".

After loading the modem, you need to go to its settings. In the browser, enter the address: http://192.168.1.1 Login - admin, password - admin. Open the link "Managment", then "Update Software":

Click "Browse", select the previously downloaded firmware and click "Update Software".
After that, the router will actually tell us that it is updating the firmware, and will ask you to wait about 2 minutes:

Setting in router mode

After loading the router, open the router settings again (http://192.168.1.1), enter your login, password and select "Quick Setup".
On the right there will be only one checkmark - "DSL Auto-connect". We remove it. More fields for entering parameters will appear: PORT, VPI, VCI. For my provider, the values were: PORT = 0, VPI = 0, VCI = 33. Click "Next".

Now select "MAC Encapsulation Routing (MER)", and click "Next".

Now you need to specify the PPTP (VPN) settings of your provider. For my provider, I had to select: "Obtain an IP address automatically", "Obtain default gateway automatically" and "Obtain DNS server addresses automatically" - they were also selected by default. Edit, click "Next".

In the next window, the wizard asks if we need NAT (needed), Firewall (if desired, it is better to enable), IGMP Multicast (if your provider broadcasts IPTV, including on ADSL lines, enable) and WAN Service (needed). In my case, I had to select everything except "IGMP Multicast":

Next, you need to enter the parameters of the internal network (the one that the router will "create" for us) - the ip of the router, the mask. Also, if "DHCP Server" is disabled, it must be enabled by selecting the "Enable DHCP Server" item and specifying the mask and address range. The default settings more than suited me: IP-Address: 192.168.1.1, Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0, Start IP Address: 192.168.1.2, End IP address: 192.168.1.254, Leased Time(hour): 24. Configure, select "Next".

We check the settings, if everything is correct, click "Save / Reboot".

Setting up a PPTP (VPN) tunnel

Before continuing, small digression: if your provider has so-called "local resources" for which you need to configure routing, before setting up a VPN, it is better to save the default gateway, which is also the gateway of the "gray network". To do this, open "Device Info", "Summary" and write it down. In the plate it is called "Default Gateway":

I had it: 172.16.96.1. Memorize it, or better yet, write it down.

Open the modem settings again at http://192.168.1.1. Open "Advanced Setup", "PPTP". Check the "Enable" box and enter the connection parameters.

 • Tunnel Name - arbitrary. Just a name.
 • PPTP Server IP Address - vpn.yourisp.com
 • Username - username (login)
 • Password - password
 • Authentication Method - server authorization method.
 • Default Route - after connecting, whether to send all packets through the created interface by default

Again, for my provider, the settings were like this (login is hidden for security reasons).

Many users have an ADSL modem. But not everyone knows that this device can be not only an "adapter" between a computer and a telephone line. If the modem is equipped with a LAN port and is connected to the computer with an Ethernet cable, then most likely such a device can act as a router. How to configure the modem as a router - we will consider here.

Modem with LAN port

The ADSL modem can operate in one of the modes: "bridge" or "router". The second option is good because you can connect more than one computer to the modem (that is, to the router), but many. True, for this you will have to use a switch. Also, you can directly connect a point to the router WiFi access, and get a wireless network.

Router and modem connection diagram

To connect an external IPTV set-top box, you need an additional LAN port (so you don’t have to buy a switch anyway). You can watch IP TV through a computer, but for this you will need to switch the modem to the “router” mode (and then configure an additional connection interface in it). What has been said about IPTV is true for most ADSL providers, including Rostelecom.

Setting up the modem in router mode

How to access the web interface?

On the sticker or in the instructions - the value of the IP address must be indicated GUI modem. First we try to get into it without performing a factory reset.

Modem LAN connector - connect to the computer as shown:

Scheme of connecting a modem to a PC

The network card in the computer is configured as follows:

 1. IP address - any one that belongs to the modem's address range
 2. Gateway address - equal to the modem IP address (or web interface address)
 3. The netmask is set "with the last zero" (we give an example):

Setting network card

If, after checking several address values, it became clear that it was impossible to log in, we give the only advice: you need to reset the modem settings. A minute or later after turning on the power of the modem, press the reset button on the case (holding it for 10-15 seconds).

It is important to know that you can only reset if you know the values of the VPI and VCI parameters to further configure the connection. Otherwise, it will not be possible to configure the modem even “as it was”.

After the reset, you can connect to any modem by setting the network card to "auto" IP and DNS. The sequence is as follows: reset, network card setup, PC reboot.

Setting up a connection on a modem router

How to set up a modem in router mode, we consider using the D-Link DSL-2500U BRU device as an example. When entering the interface, provide the administrator login and password (the word admin):

Main interface tab

You will need to remove the "extra" connection interfaces (using "Remove"), and click
Setting up a new connection

Please note: if on the second page you specify the “Bridging” mode instead of “PPPoE”, then we will get a modem operating in the “bridge” mode. The setup comes down to setting the connection parameters and then clicking "Next".

PPPoE connection parameters:

 1. VPI and VCI values for the Internet link
 2. Encapsulation mode (usually - LLC)
 3. Subscriber name and password
 4. "Static" IP (only if used)

Check the "Keep Alive" checkbox if you want to get a connection that works all the time. The "NAT" and "Firewall" options must be enabled (and "IGMP" - only in the case of transmission by the IPTV provider, moreover, on the same channel along with the Internet). "WAN Service" - should always be used. At the last step, click "Apply" (and then - "Finish"). Successful setup.

Additional features available in router mode

IPTV, VoIP option and others

The “router” mode is good because you can configure several connection interfaces with the provider (one, PPPoE is an Internet channel). Rostelecom, for example, transmits IPTV via a separate channel. Also, additional interfaces are used to enable the VoIP option or some others:

Multiple connection interfaces

Note that the VCI/VPI values for each of the interfaces are different. The second and subsequent connection channels can be configured in the "bridge" mode. In some modems, you must additionally indicate that the main connection gateway is the PPPoE interface:

Setting up D-Link modems, "new" graphical interface

If there are several LAN ports, you also need to “bridge” the bridge interface with one of the ports. Study the instructions for the modem (if there is only one LAN port, you will not need to perform such a configuration).

Connection modes in the router

 • "Keep Alive" - always on (aka - "Always On"), this mode recommended to use
 • "Dial On Demand" - auto-connection when accessing Internet resources (disconnection occurs through set time after the transfer is completed)
 • "Manual Connection" - connecting / disconnecting a connection through a tab (usually the main one) in the web interface

How to set up an Internet connection in a D-Link modem with a new version of the graphical interface - shown in the film (router mode, without IPTV):

Today's article is dedicated to those people who have home Internet available through an old ADSL modem. Today, many providers still offer the Internet through such outdated technologies, but sometimes there is simply no alternative. One such provider is Rostelecom. From this article you will learn how to connect a router through a Rostelecom modem, but this will also work with other ADSL modems.

Wiring diagrams

If you are currently using a connection via an ADSL modem, then your scheme looks approximately like this: a telephone cable is connected to a splitter (or splitter). From this splitter one wire goes to home phone(however, it may not be), the other - to the modem. And from the modem network cable"twisted pair" is connected directly to a computer or laptop. Such a scheme is actively practiced today.

The easiest way to connect a router via a modem is to create an additional link in this chain in the form of a Wi-Fi router. We simply use the same "twisted pair" to create a connection between the router (WAN port) and the ADSL modem.

How to connect a Wi-Fi router via modem: ways

There are several ways to implement such a scheme:

 1. Make the modem work as a bridge, and the router as an access point (that is, a router). In this configuration, the settings must be made on the router.
 2. The second method involves using the router as a "continuation" of the signal.

Note that the second method is the simplest. In this case, you don't really need to do anything. Only a minimum is needed: configure the router to receive a dynamic address and activate the mode of distributing addresses over the DHCP network. Most users know they need to do this, but don't know how. It is easy to connect the modem as a router, where the latter will act as a "distributor" of the Internet: in the router settings in the Advanced tab (the name of the tab may depend on the router model and manufacturer) there is a DHCP option. It must be activated, and then any device connected to the Wi-Fi router will automatically connect to the Internet. Before connecting the modem as a router, you need to make sure that all the settings in the ADSL modem are already there. They are usually entered by an employee of the provider.

The second way: how to connect a WIFI router to a modem

Considering that the first option is the most difficult, it is worth analyzing it using the example of the most common D-Link router. So, insert a cable with a small connector into the modem's ADSL connector, and plug a patch cord into the LAN connector and connect it to a computer or laptop.

Modem settings

Now you need to enter the settings on the computer itself. Go to panel Windows controls(Start - Control Panel), find the "Network and Internet" tab and click on "Network Management". There we are interested in the item "Change adapter settings". Find "Connections by local network", right-click and select "Properties". There you need to set all the TCP / IPv4 protocol settings to automatic.

Now in the browser you type the address 192.168.1.1 and you get to the admin panel of your router. Here you need to enter a pair of login / password. Enter admin/admin (default). In the menu that appears in the Quick Setup section, you need to uncheck the DSL Auto Connect line and set the values for the VPI and VCI lines. They must be obtained from the provider. Also, these values can be specified in the connection agreement, so do not rush to call the provider. In the PORT item, enter the value "0". Now click on "Next" (Next) and check the box next to the Bridging value. This will put the modem into bridge mode. You also need to check the box next to Enable Bridge Service and set a name for the bridge. Next, we will be required to register the IP address and modem mask. We write there: 192.168.1.1 and the standard netmask 255.255.255.0.

Now let's move on to setting up our WiFi router. First of all, we take out the cable from the laptop and insert it into the router. It must be connected to the modem via the WAN connector, to the computer via any LAN port. Now we connect to the router, go to its settings in the WAN section and select PPPoE as the connection. Now you need to enter all the data that the provider provided us (password, login), apply the settings, save. After that, the router will distribute the Internet from the ADSL modem. Now you know how to connect the modem as a router, but there are other ways.

Sharing from laptop

The fact is that the laptop or computer itself can be used as a router, and setting it up is easy, you just need to know how. You can connect the modem as a router using a computer only if it has a Wi-Fi adapter. Laptops have it by default. The scheme will look like this: a small one enters the modem's ADSL connector, a "twisted pair" comes out of the modem directly into the laptop. A laptop (or computer) accesses the network and shares it over Wi-Fi. Does this require settings? Yes, but now there is special programs to share the Internet over Wi-Fi, for example, Connectify hotspot. There are other programs for this purpose, but the essence is always the same. You can also share the Internet using the built-in Windows Tools, but this is a big topic for a separate article.

Conclusion

These methods, how to connect a router via a modem, work in 80% of cases. Depending on your router or modem model, the names of the settings that were mentioned in the article may differ, but the essence remains the same. Therefore, in this case, you should not focus on the names. In general, setting up a router and modem will not take you much time if you did everything right.

USB modems are not routers (routers) by default and cannot "distribute" the Internet without advanced settings. In addition, some modems work in "bridge" mode, which limits network connectivity. additional devices. All necessary settings are made by directly accessing the modem via the web interface.

Preparing a network card. Open the system tray and click on the internet icon. Click on "Network Control Center". Select "Change adapter settings" from the left menu. Right-click on the current connection and go to "Properties". Find "Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and double click on it. Set automatic acquisition of IP and DNS addresses. The router itself will allocate these addresses during operation. Setting up an ADSL modem. Changes occur in the web interface of the modem. Turning the modem over, you can see its IP address, as well as the username and password for logging in. Type the IP into the address bar of your browser and press Enter. For most models, the IP address is 192.168.1.1. For some other modems, this address is 192.168.0.1. Enter your username and password and press Enter. You have entered the modem settings.

Note: If for some reason you do not have a sticker with a password or login, do not despair. In most cases, login is admin, and the password is admin, or 1234 , or empty line.

Go to the "WAN" / "Internet" menu and create new interface connections: Dynamic IP or PPPoE. If the modem is in bridge mode, change it in the WAN/Internet menu to Dynamic IP or PPPoE. In some cases, you will have to delete the old interface and create a new one. Enter the login specified in the agreement and the password for accessing the network, turn on automatic connection to the Internet and save the changes by clicking on "Save" or "Apply". D-Link modems. Log in to the web interface using the modem's IP address, login and password. Go to the "WAN" tab. Change the connection interface type to dynamic IP or PPPoE. Extra connection interfaces can be removed in the modem settings using the "Remove" button. You can also add and configure new connections with the provider to receive IPTV, VoIP and some other options. When configuring some routers, you must additionally specify the default connection gateway - the PPPoE interface.

Internet
