The downloaded macOS Mojave installer in the /Applications folder (download link from the App Store).

If you have downloaded the macOS Mojave installer and have already used it to update your computer, the installer file will be deleted automatically. In this case, you need to download the installer again from the Mac App Store or use a different Mac.

How to burn the installermacOS Mojave to a flash drive

Please note that writing the macOS Mojave installer to a flash drive will erase all data from it. It is best to use a new flash drive.

Make sure the "Install macOS Mojave.app" file is in the /Applications folder.
Connect your flash drive to your Mac and format it if necessary.

And here, for your choice, as I promised, there are two ways to solve our problem:

The first method, as for me, is the simplest and fully automated (third-party software is involved).
The second one implies some actions on your part (no installation of third-party software is required).

METHOD #1: Using DiskMaker X 5

To create a bootable USB flash drive with an OS X installer, good people have created a special application - Disk Maker X. It is completely free and completely automates the process of formatting and transferring the installer to a USB stick. Brief instructions are given below.

STEP 2 - Launch the DiskMaker X application and in the window that opens, select the version of the operating system that we want to download to the USB drive. In our case, this is El Capitan.

STEP 3 - There will be a couple more steps, where you will need to confirm the location of the installer itself (folder /Programs) and on which media you want to record it. Follow the prompts on the screen and agree where necessary.

The process of creating a bootable OS X flash drive takes about five minutes, so be patient. After the process is completed, a corresponding message will appear.

To use a bootable flash drive, you must restart the computer while holding down the Option (Alt) button, and select the USB drive from the boot manager.

METHOD #2: Use only regular OS X tools

This method is a bit more complicated and takes longer. we will do everything by hand. Follow the instructions below.

Part 1: Preparing the USB Drive

STEP 1 - Insert the flash drive into your computer and run Disk Utility. Then click on the name of this flash drive on the left side of the window. Let me remind you once again that the flash drive must be at least 8 GB in size.

STEP 2 - Select the " Erase" and in the line Format specify MAC OS Extended (Journaled). Click the Erase... button and confirm your intentions again.

STEP 3 - Go to the " Disk partition". Expand the menu Partition scheme and choose Section 1.

STEP 4 - In the field Name enter untitled(this is important because in the next part we will refer to the USB drive by this name).

STEP 5 - Click the Options... button and select GUID partition scheme(required to copy system files to a USB drive). Confirm by clicking OK.

STEP 6 - After that click on the Apply button. When the USB flash drive preparation process is completed, close Disk Utility.

Our flash drive is ready! Now it remains to transfer the OS X installer downloaded earlier to it. More on this in the second part below.

Part 2: Transferring the OS X Installer to a USB Drive

STEP 1 - At the very beginning of the article, you should have downloaded the OS X El Capitan installer. If you haven't done it yet, come back and download. As a result, the downloaded installer “Install OS X El Capitan.app” (size 6.2 GB) should be in the folder Programs.

STEP 2 - Launch Terminal and run the following command (to avoid making a typo, just copy and paste the text below):

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app

If you are unable to run this command in the Terminal, but instead displays the message " command not found", so you've mistyped something somewhere.

In my case, I incorrectly specified the name of the installer a couple of times, which in the end should be: Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app ( Before each space in the file name in the Terminal, you must put a backslash).

STEP 3 - Enter the administrator password when asked ( in the Terminal window, your password will not be displayed, and it will seem that you are not typing anything at all - this is how it should be). After you press ENTER, you will be asked for confirmation to clear the USB drive - enter the letter Y and press ENTER again.

STEP 4 - In the window Terminal The process of creating a bootable USB flash drive with OS X El Capitan will begin. Boot files and the OS X installer itself will be copied to the USB flash drive.

STEP 5 - After successful completion of the process, close the window Terminal. To use a flash drive, restart the computer while holding down the Option (Alt) button and select removable media in the boot manager.

Execute sudo dd if=/path/to/downloaded.img of=/dev/rdiskN bs=1m (replace /path/to/downloaded.img with sudo dd if=/path/to/downloaded.img of=/dev/ rdiskN bs=1m of the path where the image file is located, e.g. ./ubuntu.img or ./ubuntu.dmg).
Using /dev/rdisk instead of /dev/disk may be faster.
- If you see the error dd: Invalid number "1m" , you are using GNU dd . Use the same command but replace bs=1m with bs=1M .
- If you see the error dd: /dev/diskN: Resource busy , make sure the disk is not in use. Run Disk Utility.app and unmount (don't eject) the drive.
Run diskutil eject /dev/diskN and remove the flash media when the command is complete
Restart your Mac and hold Alt while your Mac restarts to select your USB drive
