History of the company. Brands Acer company country of origin

Acer building in Taipei, Taiwan.

Acer is one of the world's largest manufacturers personal computers in general and laptops in particular. It would be more correct to say "especially laptops", whose owners we are. Last year, the Taiwanese manufacturer managed to overtake Dell in sales of laptop computers, so now it occupies second place in the world. And first place in our country, held by Acer for many years. In total, the company operates in more than a hundred countries around the world. The staff of all divisions included in the Pan Acer Group is more than 39,000 employees, and the total income is about $13 billion.

The Russian market has always been quite important for Acer, in contrast to the same HP and Dell, which traditionally do not favor the attention of the Russian user. Acer novelties, as a rule, appear in our country quickly, Acer products are richly represented even in small stores.

Over the past ten years, the Taiwanese corporation Acer Group has consistently ranked among the top five largest manufacturers of personal computers in the world. In terms of sales volume, Acer with its subsidiaries firmly holds a leading position in the computer markets in Latin America and Asia, and is also considered one of the leading computer companies in the US and Europe. Meanwhile, at home - in Taiwan - Acer is known primarily as the creator of the first national PC.

ACER was founded by entrepreneur Stan Shea in 1976 and was originally called Multitech International, the authorized capital was $25,000, and the staff was only 11 people.

Stan Shea, founder of Acer.

The company was originally focused on the production of microelectronics. True, the first five years the company was engaged in the development of various products for Taiwanese game manufacturers. Gradually, Stan Shi came to understand the fact that to catch up with the world's leading manufacturers household appliances It wasn't going to be easy, and the company switched to the then-nascent personal computer market. Since then, Acer has not actually deviated from the chosen course, focusing almost entirely on the PC market.

In the early 1980s, thanks to government support, the company was able to mass-assemble low-cost IBM-compatible PCs for the first time in Taiwan and enter the international market. Acer's first computer, called the MicroProcessor-I, appeared in 1981, and the following year the company introduced the MicroProcessor-II, Taiwan's first eight-bit PC. Almost immediately, a new model based on the 286 processor appears.

Founded in 1984 subsidiary Acer Peripherals, which later went on to operate under its own BenQ brand. In 1985, representative offices were opened in Japan and Germany, and in 1987 the company Acer Laboratories Incorporated- a division for the development and production of its own chipsets. The following year, the entire corporation was already renamed Acer (it is taken from Latin and translated as "maple").

Acer is named after the maple tree.

In general, Acer tends not to concentrate all resources within one company, but to develop separate, independent areas. Take the same AU Optronics, one of the three largest global manufacturers of LCD matrices, or ALI (Acer Laboratories Incorporated), a fairly prominent chipmaker, or AOpen, a PC component maker, are hardly associated with Acer. By the way, in addition to "adult daughters", there are many companies in Taiwan founded by former Acer employees. The most striking example is Asus, founded by four people who previously worked as engineers at Acer.

Just in 1988, a major breakthrough to leadership occurred: Acer acquired the American company Counterpoint Computers (San Jose, California) - at that time a major developer and manufacturer of mini-computers. In 1989, the Dutch company Kangaroo Computer B.V. was bought by the Taiwanese in exactly the same way. , which then became the basis of the production facilities of the AcerEurope division. Also in 1989 Acer and Texas Instruments - the leader of the US semiconductor industry - have formed a joint venture for the production of memory chips. In 1990, Acer acquired Altos Computer Systems, one of the leaders in the production of multi-user systems, for $94 million. In 1991, Acer engineers developed ChipUpTM technology, which was licensed to Intel in 1994. In 1992, Acer moved its headquarters to Singapore: the company was growing rapidly, and this city-state had an unusually favorable business climate. In 1997, Acer, already a leader in the computer industry, acquired Texas Instruments' laptop division. Even before that, in March 1996, Acer opened an assembly plant in Finland, focused on the Russian and CIS markets.

Extreme restructuring, rapid growth has its drawbacks. In the second half of the 90s, the corporation grew so much that it became difficult to manage it. Problems began to arise with financial accounting, coordination of work in the markets of various regions, etc. In 2000, Stan Shea, then at the head of Acer, undertook a major structural reorganization that created the Pan Acer Group. Simply put, a single conglomerate called Acer was divided by its owner into three industrial groups: Acer, Wistron and BenQ. This made it possible to expand production activities, focusing on the development the latest technologies and promotion under new trademarks of computer and telecommunications equipment. Acer itself abandoned production activities and focused on brand promotion.

In the general crisis of the hi-tech industry, it could not bypass the Taiwanese corporation. Pan Acer Group got into trouble in 2001 due to a combination of circumstances that, superimposed on each other, made the fall especially rapid. As a result of the recession in the global market, corporate customers have suspended purchases of new computer and telecommunications equipment. Acer's business at that time consisted of two parts: the first direction - the production of components for IBM, Motorola, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, the second - the manufacture of computers under its own brand. The decline in demand has dealt a blow to the entire business of the company.

And the togas of 2001 turned out to be very sad for the Pan Acer Group. Its revenue decreased by $1.6 billion compared to the previous year. Business of the main divisions of holding - Acer Group and Wistron Group - was reduced by 20.6% and 25% respectively. In September 2001, the value of Acer shares fell to almost an all-time low of $22.9 per share. The foreign bankers who arranged the lines of credit for Acer became nervous. Stan Shea, founder and chairman of the holding, has never been inclined towards centralized management. According to Western recipes for corporate governance, at the time of the crisis, the concentration of all resources in one hand was required. Representatives of Western bankers turned to Lian Kuo-Shu, chairman of the board of one of the largest Taiwanese banks Chiao Tung Bank, with a request to clarify his position regarding Acer. Kuo-Shu replied that he would not refuse to support the company. Believing that Stan Shea would be able to retain control of the enterprise, the investors were not mistaken. In 2002, Pan Acer Group quickly regained lost ground. Its turnover for the year amounted to $12.9 billion, an increase of $3.4 billion compared to 2001.

In January 2005 Gianfranco Lanci succeeded the legendary Stan Shea as President of Acer Corporation. Starting his career at Acer Italy as Managing Director, he was soon elected President of Acer EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) in 2003. In the same year, he was nominated to the position of President of Acer Inc. OBG (Acer Regional Development Business Group), coordinating sales and marketing activities in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North and South America.

Gianfranco Lanci, President of Acer.

The appointment of Gianfranco Lanci as President of Acer Corporation is in recognition of the amazing results he has achieved in Europe through his original management style and the development of an effective business model. In his new position, Gianfranco Lanci will be able to use all his experience and knowledge to further develop Acer's business around the world.

In 2006, Acer, which has made such a huge contribution to the history of the development of the IT industry not only in Taiwan, but throughout the world, celebrated its 30th anniversary. 30 years of continuous growth of the company in a rapidly developing industry testifies to the correctness of the course chosen by the company. A long-term strategy of research, innovation and marketing at the forefront has laid the foundation for the company's all-round development and has ensured that Acer is fully prepared for tomorrow's challenges.

Today, Acer produces desktop and laptop computers, server hardware, storage devices, monitors and peripherals, digital devices, LCD TVs and Solutions for e-business for use in businesses, government and educational organizations, and at home. Acer has established a consolidated sales and service network in more than 100 countries around the world. Fifteen Acer factories with a total production area of more than 1 million m2, located in the United States, the Netherlands, Finland, Malaysia and Taiwan, produce a wide range of products - from keyboards, monitors and fax machines to laptops, desktop computers, servers, workstations, systems for video conferencing. In addition, Acer manufactures integrated circuits, DRAM, ASIC, BIOS components. Acer's strategic partners are Texas Instruments, Intel, Microsoft, Novell, Santa Cruz Operations. Along with the main manufacturing plants, Acer has 30 separate assembly shops in 24 countries.

And finally, we all together wish Acer further success - after all, it is by no means the last thing that determines how the Russian notebook market will look like in the future.

An excerpt characterizing Acer

- Well, come to us when in the evening, the pharaoh will pawn, - said Zherkov.
Or do you have a lot of money?
- Come.
- It is forbidden. He gave a vow. I don't drink or play until it's done.
Well, before the first thing...
- You'll see it there.
Again they were silent.
“Come in, if you need anything, everyone at headquarters will help…” said Zherkov.
Dolokhov chuckled.
“You better not worry. What I need, I won't ask, I'll take it myself.
"Yeah, well, I'm so...
- Well, so am I.
- Goodbye.
- Be healthy…
... and high and far,
On the home side...
Zherkov touched his horse with his spurs, which three times, getting excited, kicked, not knowing where to start, coped and galloped, overtaking the company and catching up with the carriage, also in time with the song.

Returning from the review, Kutuzov, accompanied by an Austrian general, went to his office and, calling the adjutant, ordered to give himself some papers relating to the condition of the incoming troops, and letters received from Archduke Ferdinand, who commanded the forward army. Prince Andrei Bolkonsky with the required papers entered the office of the commander in chief. In front of the plan laid out on the table sat Kutuzov and an Austrian member of the Hofkriegsrat.
“Ah ...” said Kutuzov, looking back at Bolkonsky, as if by this word inviting the adjutant to wait, and continued the conversation begun in French.
“I only say one thing, General,” Kutuzov said with a pleasant elegance of expression and intonation, forcing one to listen to every leisurely spoken word. It was evident that Kutuzov listened to himself with pleasure. - I only say one thing, General, that if the matter depended on my personal desire, then the will of His Majesty Emperor Franz would have been fulfilled long ago. I would have joined the Archduke long ago. And believe my honor, that for me personally to transfer the higher command of the army more than I am to a knowledgeable and skillful general, such as Austria is so plentiful, and to lay down all this heavy responsibility for me personally would be a joy. But circumstances are stronger than us, general.
And Kutuzov smiled with such an expression as if he were saying: “You have full right not to believe me, and even I don't care if you believe me or not, but you have no reason to tell me that. And that's the whole point."
The Austrian general looked dissatisfied, but could not answer Kutuzov in the same tone.
“On the contrary,” he said in a grouchy and angry tone, so contrary to the flattering meaning of the words spoken, “on the contrary, Your Excellency’s participation in the common cause is highly valued by His Majesty; but we believe that a real slowdown deprives the glorious Russian troops and their commanders of those laurels that they are accustomed to reap in battle, ”he finished the apparently prepared phrase.
Kutuzov bowed without changing his smile.
- And I am so convinced and, based on the last letter that His Highness Archduke Ferdinand honored me, I assume that the Austrian troops, under the command of such a skilled assistant as General Mack, have now already won a decisive victory and no longer need our help, - Kutuzov said.
The general frowned. Although there was no positive news about the defeat of the Austrians, there were too many circumstances confirming the general unfavorable rumors; and therefore Kutuzov's assumption about the victory of the Austrians was very similar to a mockery. But Kutuzov smiled meekly, still with the same expression that said that he had the right to assume this. Indeed, the last letter he received from Mack's army informed him of the victory and the most advantageous strategic position of the army.
“Give me this letter here,” said Kutuzov, turning to Prince Andrei. - Here you are, if you want to see it. - And Kutuzov, with a mocking smile on the ends of his lips, read the following passage from the letter of Archduke Ferdinand from the German-Austrian general: “Wir haben vollkommen zusammengehaltene Krafte, nahe an 70,000 Mann, um den Feind, wenn er den Lech passirte, angreifen und schlagen zu konnen. [We have a fully concentrated force, about 70,000 people, so that we can attack and defeat the enemy if he crosses the Lech. Since we already own Ulm, we can retain the advantage of commanding both banks of the Danube, therefore, every minute, if the enemy does not cross the Lech, cross the Danube, rush to his communication line, cross the Danube lower and the enemy, if he decides to turn all his strength on our faithful allies, to prevent his intention from being fulfilled. Thus, we will cheerfully await the time when the imperial Russian army is completely ready, and then together we will easily find an opportunity to prepare the enemy for the fate he deserves.
Kutuzov sighed heavily, having finished this period, and carefully and affectionately looked at the member of the Hofkriegsrat.
“But you know, Your Excellency, the wise rule of assuming the worst,” said the Austrian general, apparently wanting to end the jokes and get down to business.
He glanced involuntarily at the adjutant.
“Excuse me, General,” Kutuzov interrupted him and also turned to Prince Andrei. - That's what, my dear, you take all the reports from our scouts from Kozlovsky. Here are two letters from Count Nostitz, here is a letter from His Highness Archduke Ferdinand, here's another,” he said, handing him some papers. - And from all this, cleanly, in French, make a memorandum, a note, for the visibility of all the news that we had about the actions of the Austrian army. Well, then, and present to his Excellency.
Prince Andrei bowed his head as a sign that he understood from the first words not only what was said, but also what Kutuzov would like to tell him. He collected the papers, and, giving a general bow, quietly walking along the carpet, went out into the waiting room.
Despite the fact that not much time has passed since Prince Andrei left Russia, he has changed a lot during this time. In the expression of his face, in his movements, in his gait, there was almost no noticeable former pretense, fatigue and laziness; he had the appearance of a man who has no time to think about the impression he makes on others, and is busy with pleasant and interesting business. His face expressed more satisfaction with himself and those around him; his smile and look were more cheerful and attractive.
Kutuzov, whom he caught up with back in Poland, received him very affectionately, promised him not to forget him, distinguished him from other adjutants, took him with him to Vienna and gave him more serious assignments. From Vienna, Kutuzov wrote to his old comrade, the father of Prince Andrei:
“Your son,” he wrote, “gives hope to be an officer who excels in his studies, firmness and diligence. I consider myself fortunate to have such a subordinate at hand.”
At Kutuzov's headquarters, among his comrades, and in the army in general, Prince Andrei, as well as in St. Petersburg society, had two completely opposite reputations.
Some, a minority, recognized Prince Andrei as something special from themselves and from all other people, expected great success from him, listened to him, admired him and imitated him; and with these people, Prince Andrei was simple and pleasant. Others, the majority, did not like Prince Andrei, they considered him an inflated, cold and unpleasant person. But with these people, Prince Andrei knew how to position himself in such a way that he was respected and even feared.

There are a lot of computer companies in Taiwan, but very few companies that have managed to make such a big impact on the computer market, as did Acer, which produces turnkey systems, laptops and, more recently, smartphones. The list of manufactured products also includes projection equipment, consumer electronics and various peripherals and components.

Now one of the most influential corporations Acer Group originates from a small computer company Mulitech International founded by Stan Shih in 1976. A small starting capital of 25,000 US dollars and a couple of dozen employees - everything is standard and very dull. However, in the early 1980s, they managed to obtain significant subsidies from the government and were the first to mass-produce IBM-compatible computers in Taiwan. It was in those years that the basic principle of the company was laid, which is still used today - the production of inexpensive computers with good performance and acceptable quality. This approach has fully justified itself. Already in 1985, the company began to open representative offices in other countries (Japan and Germany were the first). Various divisions begin to form, in the name of which the word is already present "acer". Of these, it should be noted Acer Peripherals- in the future, it is from it that the brand will be born BenQ. Here it is appropriate to mention another well-known Taiwanese company - ASUS, which was organized by four engineers who left Acer.

1988 was marked by the fact that the entire corporation had already changed its name to the one used to this day, a Acer Group. Acer translated from Latin as "sharp, keen, impetuous". However, there are other, less pleasant meanings - "caustic, sullen, piercing", such a capacious word. In the same year, it enters the American market. To do this, the company is taken over Counterpoint Computers. Further - more: European positions are strengthened by the acquisition of the Dutch Kangaroo Computer B.V. And that was just the beginning. Acer is rapidly developing, capturing new markets and absorbing other companies. In 1997, the company managed to become one of the leaders in the computer market.

At the beginning of the 21st century, a serious restructuring was carried out, rejuvenating the overweight company. So there was Acer Group, consisting of three components - Acer, Wistron and BenQ. If such a restructuring had not been carried out in a timely manner and quickly, then, most likely, Acer Group would cease to be of such great importance, since the then crisis in the IT industry seriously reduced the company's income.

To date Acer Group owns four brands - actually himself Acer, as well as Packard Bell Gateway and eMachines. In 2008, an entry into the smartphone market was made - the company was acquired E-TEN. However, it was decided to abandon another brand, so as not to confuse consumers. Smartphones are branded Acer.

Computers and laptops Acer, aimed at different users, are not among the prestigious ones. But they are inexpensive (no additional payment for a beautiful brand!) and are of good quality, which determined their well-deserved popularity in the market. In this matter, they significantly bypassed other well-known manufacturers.

Success Acer the exact opposite of success Apple. No prestige, but low cost at good opportunities. By the way, the design of this product is very good. However, it is impossible not to mention Acer Ferrari- laptops related to the upper segment - here you have an attractive design and high performance and price like Apple. But still - the vast majority of products Acer is very cheap. Stan Shi himself once noted about his competitors that they simply do not know how to create and sell inexpensive equipment, and therefore will not withstand the competition. Target Acer- first place. And the corporation has every chance to achieve it.

The corporate headquarters is located in Taipei, Taiwan. Representative offices and factories of the company are scattered around the world and provide jobs for thousands of people. The company's products are very popular in the CIS countries.
