Acer Aspire One Netbook Specifications. Acer Aspire One review: the first netbook Acer Acer aspire one year of release

Many of us are used to the fact that Intel processors are installed in netbooks. The Intel Atom and 10.1-inch laptops became something of a "Wintel platform," as the "symbiosis" of PC-type computers and Microsoft's operating system was called for several years. But as the time of the obsolete "term" has gone, netbooks based on AMD chips also began to appear.

It was the single-core Athlon Neo MV-40, which was a CPU based on the K8 architecture, which had a greatly reduced power consumption - up to 15 watts. It was paired with the M690T chipset with the already outdated Radeon X1270 integrated video card.

In the summer, the Congo platform followed, within which the first dual-core AMD chips with a TDP of no more than 18 W appeared. A little later, they were joined by the M780 chipset along with the faster Radeon HD 3200 graphics core. But this solution did not gain fame either.

The Nile platform, released in the spring of 2010, has become much more popular. The new 45 nm energy-efficient processors received a good M880 chipset with a Radeon HD 4225 accelerator. more manufacturers, among which were Acer. She's one of the few who dared to release a 10.1-inch netbook based on the Nile - the rest were often limited to 11.6-inch and larger models. It is this very almost “experimental” Acer product that we will consider in this article - Acer Aspire One 521.

But before proceeding to the description of the netbook, it is worth mentioning the Brazos platform, presented in January 2011 at CES. It is used by many more manufacturers, and some (including Acer) even announced tablets based on new processors. However, while we got our hands on a laptop based on the previous platform.

Design

Making an original netbook is quite simple, even though it is the smallest of the “classic” mobile computers. Their 10-inch screen is downright "hulk" compared to 4-inch smartphones, where there is even less room for "decorations", but even they manage to differentiate by appearance. Another thing is that not all manufacturers care about this very important component. But this does not apply to the Acer Aspire One 521.

The Acer Aspire One 521 netbook isn't new, but the company hasn't given the current models a very different design – the old one has only been slightly modified. And we understand why this was done - the Aspire One 521 looks pretty good. In principle, Acer was not particularly sophisticated - everything is somehow quite ordinary and ordinary, but at the same time stylish and elegant. The body shape is classic, rectangular. In some places there are smooth bevels, but the corners are sharp - it turned out immediately strictly and softly - just like a stylish business laptop.

The first thing that attracts the eye is the design of the back of the screen cover. It is completely flat, but slightly sloping on the sides. But this is common, while the pale brown color is much less common. However, the most important touch is the texture with small sketched and hollow rectangles. They are applied to the right side of the cover and gradually break off. In general, it turned out not pretentious, but original at the same time - this design option gives the Aspire One 521 its own personality, while the all-black Aspire One 522 looks much more boring.

Plus, the lid is covered with a lacquered coating, which glares in an interesting way, but practically does not collect fingerprints. And if they collect, then on a light background they are very poorly visible. However, the "real" gloss was found on the edging of the screen - black and easily soiled. I am glad that there it is only necessary to take on the upper edge of the cover in the area of \u200b\u200bthe camera.

Inside, the Aspire One 521 is fairly austere, but that's more than enough. The keyboard looks very solid - its keys seem large, as if they were from a full-fledged laptop. This, by the way, is not far from the truth. The area of the working area is small, so even if the designers left it empty, it would look pretty good. However, in addition to the touchpad, two stickers are glued there, which gives the device a “complexity”.

Well, it remains to mention a very unusual design of the on/off button located on the left above the keyboard. No, it performs its function more than standard, but it is made of silicone and has the shape of an unfinished circle. As a result, we managed to make it a beautiful backlight - along the circumference, part of this light penetrates the button itself.

And finally, about the build quality. It is, as we expected, very good. We did not notice any creaking or play of the body parts, everything was well fitted to each other. Production material - high-quality and durable plastic. Aluminum, of course, would be more reliable and solid, but also more expensive - you rarely see it in netbooks.

Equipment

Acer Aspire One 521 comes in a small, stylish box made of good cardboard. The box has a photo of several Aspire Ones in different colors.

Inside we found a more than ordinary kit: quick guide User Manual, Warranty Booklet, Driver CD, Power Supply, and Case Cleaning Cloth. The latter is not so much needed by the laptop in question, but still its presence cannot be called superfluous.

By the way, the power supply is made quite unusual. It resembles a large phone charger, rather than a typical laptop or netbook bracket. Such a small size allowed it to be made with a power of only 40 W (19 V, 2.15 A), but the larger Aspire One 521 is not required. Plus, the plug is made removable, which makes it easier to transport the unit, and at the same time to replace it, if you are suddenly brought to an “unusual” country.

Ergonomics

We must assume that the popularity of Acer netbooks is not least due to their ergonomics. Acer has managed to make the most of the small size of its 10-inch models. Of course, working on their keyboard is not as convenient as on large laptops, but there is no obvious discomfort.

So the keyboard. Attention is drawn to the size and shape of the keys. Immediately one gets the impression that they are a completely normal size, which is not far from the truth. Additionally, their rounded shape enhances the effect - so they seem even larger. The size of both keys is impressive - they are more than comfortable to work with. seems relatively short, but in principle its length is enough. also had to "cut", but not much. But here it turned out to be no longer than a regular key, which is already more difficult to get used to - at first the finger constantly misses.

As for the arrow block, one of the most painful issues of most mobile keyboards, in the case of the Aspire One 521 it has both advantages and disadvantages. The first can be attributed to the separation of the block from the main layout - it is quite easy to find it by touch. As for the minuses, the keys are made twice as low as the rest, which is not very convenient. In addition, in addition to the arrow keys, the block is also “clogged” with, which does not facilitate blind cursor control.

The touchpad is not very large - the height of the working area did not allow it to be made higher, and it does not make much sense to expand it. However, the comfort of work has not suffered from this - the touchpad area is more than enough for the resolution provided by the display of the Acer netbook. As for the coating, it is slightly rough, which allows you to accurately control the mouse pointer without much effort. The buttons under the touchpad are not very tight pressing, but with a characteristic click.

There are no additional buttons on the Aspire One 521. To the left above the keyboard is only the button to turn the laptop on and off, which we described in detail above.

To the left of the touchpad are four LED indicators: netbook operation, battery charging, operation hard drive and wireless controllers. And, of course, another one is combined with the computer power button.

The AMD mobile platform has always been famous for its gluttony for energy, as well as for its "hot" disposition. However, having placed it in a 10.1-inch compact case, Acer did not succeed in another "frying pan" - the netbook did not heat up more than a conventional "atomic" mobile computer. And this is despite the fact that there are very few ventilation holes on the bottom (only a small row in front) and the Aspire One 521 is more powerful than most solutions based on Intel Atom.

One of the nicest things about AMD's ultra-mobile platform is support for up to 4GB of RAM, which Intel has limited to half that amount. However, in the case of the Aspire One 521, more than 2 GB cannot be installed - there is no second slot for a memory module. But you can reach the first one without any problems at all. In addition, access to the hard drive is also open, which is quite rare for netbooks - manufacturers usually allow you to change one thing: RAM or a hard drive.

Connectors, screen, sound and camera

AMD-based netbooks often differ from Intel ones in one additional slot. What exactly - we will say below. The rest of the "positions" are the same.

On the left side are D-SUB, HDMI, air vents, one USB and a card reader. On the right side, there is an audio output, a microphone input, two USBs, a power connector placed in an unusual place - in the center, Kensington Lock and RJ-45. The front and rear sides are empty.

So, what is an "extra" connector? HDMI. Its absence on netbooks with Intel Atom inside is explained very simply - through the digital output, the video card built into the processor can display a picture with a resolution of no higher than 1366x768 pixels, which is not enough for HDMI. In the case of AMD integrated graphics, there is no such limitation, because all manufacturers equip even the most compact computer models with this output. Otherwise, as we said, the set of connectors is completely standard.

Acer has opted to hide a pair of stereo speakers at the front of the bottom. Under them, small holes are made in the removable cover so as not to drown out the sound. However, their location dampens it anyway, especially the mids and highs. Bass has never been born in such small speakers, so the sound quality in the case of the Aspire One 521 is not at all up to par. It would be better to connect headphones or external speakers.

As for the screen, it is equipped with LED-backlighting in modern fashion, which makes it thinner and more economical in terms of energy. As for its quality, in general we liked it. At one time, we were delighted with the display of the ASUS Eee PC 1015PD netbook, and were disappointed with the quality of the MSI U135DX screen. So, the Aspire One 521 display is subjectively worse than the first, but better than the second. Moreover, it is closer to the ASUS laptop, which is very pleasing. In general, the screen shows a very good picture and has a good supply of brightness. Viewing angles are not bad, but it can be better.

As for the resolution, it is standard for a 10.1 "diagonal - 1024x600 pixels. This option is not critical for the eyes, and there is already not enough space on the desktop. By the way, the newer Aspire One 522 is equipped with a display with a resolution of 720p or 1280x720 pixels. Here is an option for The 10.1-inch solution is much better in our opinion.

Well, a few words about the camera. The quality of its pictures is no different from other webcams built into netbooks - it is very mediocre. You can evaluate it yourself:

Camera resolution - 1.3 MP. Also standard, although netbooks often have a 0.3 MP sensor.

Configuration

If you take a laptop or netbook based on the AMD Brazos platform, then its processor configuration will not differ from any other similar product. AMD is now shipping four 40nm chips based on the Bobcat core, of which only two are actually used: the dual-core C-50 and E-350. Netbooks get C-50. They are low clock frequency at 1.0 GHz, and at the same time low power consumption. The situation with the previous generation of the AMD Nile platform is somewhat different - it has more processors available and, pleasantly, it also competed well with the Intel Atom. Now let's take a look at what the Aspire One 521 is based on.

If you do not look at the top of the table, then we have a typical 10.1-inch netbook, and even one of the most inexpensive ones. However, the AMD platform distinguishes it from the background of "atomic" ones. The point is primarily in the processor - its frequency is 1.7 GHz, which is quite good for a netbook. In addition, this is almost a full-fledged Athlon II, which in any way will be faster than the popular Atom N455. But we will leave such conclusions for the testing section.

Of course, the chipset and video card are different. The Radeon HD 4225 is a decent solution for a 10.1-inch laptop, although the Radeon HD 6250 integrated into the AMD C-50 processor might be better. In any case, in terms of graphics performance and functionality, the AMD platform (both past and current) is superior to Intel Atom, as we will also see.

The RAM in our copy of the Aspire One 521 turned out to be very small - only 1 GB. Windows 7 Home Basic was preinstalled on the computer, for which this capacity may not be enough for comfortable work. We would recommend at least doubling the amount of RAM.

not pleased and HDD. 160 GB is the level of the most budget netbooks. More expensive models are equipped with a 250-320 GB hard drive, and some of them have a spindle speed of 7200 rpm. In our opinion, this is the parameter on which you should not save.

Part by part communication capabilities The Aspire One 521 doesn't shine either. Only a Wi-Fi controller with support for the 802.11n standard stands out. But the Bluetooth-adapter distinguished itself by its absence. However, it is optional and may be present in other modifications. As for Ethernet, its speed cannot exceed 100 Mbps.

The dimensions and weight of the Acer netbook correspond to a typical Intel Atom based product. However, this is already an achievement - earlier AMD processors were not installed in such compact cases. As for the price, it is, of course, low. If desired, Aspire One 521 can be found for 9-10 thousand. However, instead of Athlon II Neo K125, a weaker AMD V105 chip (1.2 GHz) will be installed there. That is, this product clearly belongs to the budget segment itself.

Testing

To evaluate the performance of the Acer Aspire One 521, we chose two ASUS netbooks: Eee PC 1015PD and 1015PEM. Both are based on Intel platform Atom and also have some design differences. In particular, the Eee PC 1015PEM is white.

As you can see, both ASUS netbooks differ from each other only in one thing - the processor. The Eee PC 1015PEM has a dual-core Atom N550 chip running at 1.50 GHz, while the Atom N455 has an operating frequency of 1.67 GHz.

The results in PCMark tests are more than revealing. The Acer netbook outperformed both ASUS computers, including the Eee PC 1015PEM with the dual-core Atom N550. One Athlon II Neo core was faster in all tests, and the Radeon HD 4225 perfectly complemented it.

In CINEBENCH the situation is not so unambiguous, but still significant. The dual-core Atom N550 in the rendering test, which makes good use of the capabilities of multi-core processors, showed the same result as the Neo K125 with a single core. Well, there is nothing even to compare the OpenGL test - the difference of 6.5 times in favor of the Aspire One 521 speaks for itself.

It's not hard to guess who will win in the graphics tests. The superiority of the Acer Aspire One 521 is obvious, and the more difficult the benchmark, the more significant it is. So in 3DMark 2006 it is almost an order of magnitude.

As you can see, AMD-based netbooks can handle old games without any problems - they have reached an acceptable FPS level. As for both ASUS laptops, they are very far behind. The two cores of the Atom N550 don't help him in any way - they obviously lack a faster graphics card.

The Acer netbook comes with a 6-cell battery (44.82 Wh; 4150 mAh; 10.8 V) that is large enough for a 10.1-inch mobile computer. Both compared products have slightly larger battery capacity.

Well, the Aspire One 521 can't win in everything. For good performance, I had to pay with time battery life. However, the "price" was not very high - the Acer netbook lagged behind both ASUS quite a bit, showing a very outstanding result in general. A full charge of its battery is enough for six and a half hours of reading and four hours of standard quality video playback. HD-video "eats" the battery in three hours.

Conclusion

AMD is clearly trying very hard to push Intel into the market for mobile and ultra-mobile platforms. And, it should be noted, its Nile platform last year and the current Brazos are quite successful. However, very few products were released based on the Nile, and especially 10.1-inch netbooks. In our opinion, in vain - Acer Aspire One 521 is a clear confirmation of this.

In terms of external parameters, this is the most common 10.1-inch netbook, no worse and no better than typical representatives on the Intel Atom platform. It heats up no more than them, has the same size and weight, and has a long battery life. However, its advantages include noticeably higher performance, surpassing even the dual-core Atom N550 chip. And the difference is especially visible in graphical tasks - it reaches several hundred percent.

Otherwise, the advantages of the Aspire One 521 include a fairly comfortable keyboard layout, a good screen, an unusual design, good assembly, good features self update. Plus, this netbook costs quite a bit today. So you don't have to worry about its obsolescence - Aspire One 521 can easily compete with modern netbooks.

The Aspire One laptop line is, first of all, a lightweight, ultra-thin device that incorporates the best achievements and developments of Acer developers. The good news is that repairing this model is easier than.

All mini-notebooks from this series are equipped with a standard package that includes:

  • battery;
  • power adapter;
  • documentation;
  • warranty card for .

The Acer Aspire One D257 netbook is equipped with either a 2-core Intel® Atom™ N570/N550 processor or a single-core N455/N475 processor. This computer comes with a standard 2.5" hard drive with a capacity of 250 or 320 GB, and according to the method of connecting to the network, it can have the following options: Wi-Fi, Ethernet or 3G modem.

1.1 Design and display

The case design is made of not expensive, but high-quality plastic, and due to the high-quality assembly, it is free from extraneous squeaks and backlashes. Coloring netbook can have 4 different colors: black, red blue or white.

The cover of the netbook is glossy on both sides, has an unusual wavy surface, on which the corporate logo and a pattern in the form of a drop are applied. Basically appearance Aspire One D257 is original and minified. Everything looks cheap, but at the same time practical. By the way, this model is rarely required.

The screen of Aspire One D257, made using LED backlight technology, has a size of 10.1 inches (28 cm) and a resolution of 1024X600 px with a ratio of 16:9, which allows you to ideally view photos and media files.

1.2 Keyboard and touchpad

The keyboard of the netbook is simple and convenient. When working on it, the keys have a normal course, they work without sticking. A medium-sized but compact touchpad will allow you to enjoy convenient navigation with just a flick of your finger. Everything works without significant delays, scaling, cursor responsiveness - the sensitivity of the touch pad is on top.

1.3 Expansion ports and power

As in any netbook, the lack of an optical drive is compensated by the presence of a serial USB port 2.0. Next door, there is an RJ-45 micro connector and video - VGA. A little to the left is the power socket of the device. On the opposite side, there are two more serial USB ports and one connector each for connecting a microphone and headphones. But rarely required for this model.

Autonomous power supply, provides 6-cell - 4400 mA or 3-cell -2200 mA battery. A six cell battery can operate without recharging for approximately 8 hours, a 3 cell battery for about 4 hours.

2 Performance

The dual-core processor based on the Intel Atom N570 has a relatively low performance, with economical power consumption. Such a processor works in conjunction with DDR3 RAM and
integrated video card GMA3150.

The used 256 MB of graphics adapter memory is quite sufficient for video decoding and photo viewing, but for computer games frankly, such a video card will be rather weak. Some games may and will run at optimal FPS levels, but only on minimized settings.

If we summarize the work of a netbook as a whole, then for some student, office solutions, its capacities will be enough.

2.1 Conclusion and price

The price of the Acer Aspire One D257 netbook is in the range of 210-250 USD, depending on the region and configuration. For a fairly modest price, you can buy Acer Aspire One D257 and experience the following benefits:

  • Quite light and bulky;
  • Excellent dual-core processor;
  • Simple matrix replacement (like );
  • Nice and well-made case;
  • Conveniently fitted keyboard and nimble touchpad.

On the whole quite good decision for both work and play.

Russia, according to the latest data, is recognized as the leader in the growth of Internet users among European countries, it is not surprising that more and more companies seek to introduce users to the "global web". It doesn’t matter what kind of device it will be: a phone with a built-in browser or an iphone / ipod touch with one of the most convenient mobile ways surfing the net.

Notebook manufacturers are also interested in this sector, they want to become a guide to the global network for buyers, a kind of guiding star, providing a device that is constantly connected to the network and guarantees a pleasant pastime. This device can be a netbook.

4 months have passed since the release of Artem Lutfullin's material. During this time, the market, including the Russian one, has replenished with several models of netbooks from various manufacturers. Yes, and the very concept of "netbook" was assigned to small devices the size of a book, the main purpose of which is to work on the Internet and with text, as well as moderate use multimedia capabilities devices.

The differences between the models on the market are not particularly large. Basically, they relate to various amounts of RAM, information storage (HDD or SSD), as well as the operating system installed in the netbook - often it is Windows XP or one of the Linux subspecies.

The founder of the Asus EEE PC 70x series showed two important points: the screen size should be more than 7 inches, and the resolution should be 1024x600 or higher, the keyboard installed in the Asus EEE PC 70x was also very small, it was simply inconvenient to type large text on it.

Asus continued the EEE PC series with models 900 and 901. The first of them was not much different from the netbook that Artem described in his article: only the screen size and, accordingly, the resolution increased; the keyboard has not changed - the size of the keys has remained the same. The next model, 901, had a very important innovation, namely Atom processor, which later became the de facto standard, other manufacturers released their devices on this particular processor (with rare exceptions).

Competitors soon followed Asus and presented their netbook models: MSI U90 and Acer Aspire One. Models with 10"" screens - Asus EEE PC 1000x and MSI Wind (U100) - are slowly starting to appear on sale, but we will not touch on them today, the dimensions, and most importantly, the weight of these devices are somewhat larger, which means a different level of compactness.

Let's finally move on to talking about the Acer Aspire One.

Positioning

The presentation of Aspire One, which I managed to attend, was aimed at clarifying the positioning of the device, explaining the differences between this netbook model and its competitors.

Acer especially notes the interest in the correct presentation of its new device. The company really does not want the Aspire One to be on the shelves in the same row with "large laptops" and recommended to those customers who do not have enough Money for a complete laptop. Acer really wants to get the right understanding of the essence of the device: an additional element in home network, and not a replacement for a desktop computer or laptop. Not the last role in the product-buyer connection is played by store sellers or, in extreme cases, resources like mobile-review.

Netbook as a class and Aspire One in particular - a device, a faithful assistant, which is always at hand and at the same time light and compact, has a larger screen than modern phones, PDAs and communicators, and allows you to meet all your Internet needs. Aspire One is designed for communication, work, study, entertainment and storage. As a consumer product, this device can become the very first computer in the family and introduce the user to the Internet, multimedia and office editors, or become a second computer, functionally located between the PDA and the main computer / laptop in the family.

Possible configurations

The laptop will be delivered in two configurations: older (index 150) and younger (110, which we tested).

110 : Screen 8.9"" CrystalBrite WSVGA (1024x600), Intel processor Atom N270 (1.6 MHz), RAM 512 MB DDR2 (soldered on motherboard), 8 GB SSD, LAN 10/100, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Operating Linux system(Linpus Lite).

RAM can be expanded by purchasing an additional bar and installing it yourself in the slot (you can get to it only by disassembling the entire laptop), while the warranty is not lost. But NAND-flash with a capacity of 8 GB, on which the system is installed in the younger model, can not be easily replaced with a full-fledged HDD - the layout of the devices will not allow this. On the Internet, some craftsmen were able to connect the HDD, but it looks unpresentable, but there will always be users who like to dig and find non-standard moves, sacrificing their appearance. If you still really want to increase the capacity, you can buy an SDHC card and insert it into a special Storage Expansion slot, the system will automatically expand your system space using the card. A good option, given that SD cards cost a penny these days - for 1800 rubles you can buy a 16 GB drive.

Model 150 has the following configuration: Screen 8.9"" CrystalBrite WSVGA (1024x600), Processor Intel Atom N270 (1.6 MHz), RAM 1024 MB DDR2 (of which 512 MB are soldered to the motherboard, the second 512 MB are installed in the form of a bracket), 80 GB HDD, LAN 10/100, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Windows operating system (Home Edition).

Both models come with lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 2400 mAh, which is enough for 2.5-3 hours of work. It takes 1 hour 20 minutes to fully charge.

The battery will also be released. increased capacity- its charge, according to preliminary information, will be enough for about 7 hours of work. Estimated cost - 3000 rubles. There is also an option for future Aspire One trim levels that includes a higher capacity battery right off the bat.

As you can see, Bluetooth is not implemented in any of the configurations - the manufacturer believes that there is no urgent need for the module, but if the user needs this type of data transfer for his needs, he can buy it in the form of a USB key fob.

In the future, it is planned to release a configuration with installed module 3G or WiMax. This will be carried out in alliance with one of the telecom operators, preliminary before the end of this year.

A configuration with a 3G module will be more expensive by about 1000 rubles.

Equipment

In a colorful box you can find: leather case. replacement, a compact power adapter and the netbook itself. In addition to the short and detailed description there is also a Recover Disk for Linux.

The cover is the most ordinary, designed only to avoid scratching the glossy surface of the netbook when carried in a backpack or bag.

For comparison adapter Asus EEE PC 701

The adapter is really very small, such a size would be expected more from a charger for mobile phone but not for a laptop. If you are going on a trip and you also need to grab a charger, you don’t have to worry about having to carry something bulky with you all the time.

Design, dimensions

After ten days of using the Asus EEE PC 701, the Aspire One came into my hands. Subjectively, I like the Aspire One better. Glossy surfaces, mercilessly overgrown with fingerprints, however, give a more rigorous look to the device. Matte and rough material, from which the EEE PC 701 is made, leaves the impression of some "budget", an inexpensive device, during the development of which a lot had to be saved.

There are four body color options: Golden Brown, Coral Pink, White Shell and Sapphire Blue. Models with white and blue body versions were the first to go on sale. Pink and brown netbooks will appear later this year.

The back surface of the lid (half that with the screen) and the area around the keyboard, including the touchpad, are painted in color. The blue and brown models have a black-painted keyboard and side ribs; in the white and pink models, these elements are painted white. Regardless of the primary color, the screen border remains black.

The Aspire One netbook does not have a single right angle, all body lines are rounded. Designers single out orange rings, located on both sides, next to the hinges, as a special design element. However, this step is not repeated anywhere else, except perhaps in the design of the Recovery disk.

The size and weight of the device is still one of the most important parameters of the netbook. Aspire One is moderately compact and light: physical parameters are 249x170x29 mm, weight - 977 grams. Naturally, the 150 model, with an 80 GB hard drive, will weigh a little more; also, the dimensions of the device will increase when installing a high-capacity battery.

The difference in size with the Asus EEE PC701 is not so great, but the extra space is used to enlarge the keyboard buttons. We will talk about this later.

The Aspire One will easily fit in bags of various sizes, but if you are used to carrying a backpack with you, then most likely you will not notice the presence of a netbook in it.

Case, build quality

The plastic of the body is painted with sufficient quality, there were no scuffs or scratches during use - the coating inspires confidence. But the outer side of the netbook lid, due to the gloss, constantly collects fingerprints. The inner part around the keyboard is painted in the main color of the device, but interspersed with sparkles.

The build quality raises no objections. The body parts are tightly fitted to each other, I did not notice any backlash, deflection or wobble.

Cooling system, heat dissipation

The cooling system in Aspire One is active - the fan in the bottom of the case only starts when the system is heavily loaded (during the launch of resource-intensive applications).

The case practically does not heat up, if you hold the netbook on your knees, you will not feel any discomfort.

Controls

The layout of the elements is quite standard for laptops: on the left side from top to bottom there is a socket for connecting the power adapter, an output to an external display (VGA), a small hole in the cooling system, an Ethernet port, 1 USB and a Storage Expansion slot for expansion internal memory that supports SD/SDHC cards.

On the right side there is a Kensigton Lock connector, then there is a card reader that supports SD, MMC, RS-MMC, MS, MS PRO, xD standards, below there are two USB 2.0 ports, a 3.5 mm audio output and a microphone input.

On the bottom of the netbook, in the right corner, there is a slider that activates Wi-Fi.

On the front panel in a small recess is an on / off button with a built-in indicator (the indicator lights up green when the netbook is working, blinks orange in standby mode and lights up orange while charging).

Above the display is a 0.3 megapixel Crystal Eye videoconferencing camera. A little to the left is a small hole - a built-in microphone.

The speakers are located at the bottom of the case, in its lower part. Their volume is average, it may be suitable for background sound, but for a denser listening to podcasts, music and movie dubbing, I recommend using headphones.

The operation indicators are located on an oblong cylinder located at the very top of the lower half of the body. When the lid is closed, the cylinder is exposed so that the indicator lights remain visible. The first of them notifies about the battery charge, the second blinks in time with the disk drive, the next two indicators light up when Caps Lock and Num Lock are activated, respectively.

Screen

The TFT-display has a diagonal of 8.9 "" (195x114 mm), it has a good brightness indicator, uses Acer CrystalBrite proprietary technology and is equipped with LED backlight, has a resolution of 1024x600 pixels and supports 262,000 colors.

Thanks to the increased resolution, the need to use horizontal scrolling when viewing Internet pages has disappeared.

Horizontal viewing angles do not cause any complaints, and vertical ones could be better. However, you won't have to look for the optimal angle for a long time - it is enough to tilt the netbook cover as far as possible (and this is 155 degrees), in this state the colors are not inverted.

Keyboard

Keyboard Aser Aspire One

Asus keyboard EEE PC 701

The keyboard includes 84 keys with a travel of 1.6 mm. Their implementation in the Aspire One surpasses that in the Asus EEE PC 701 in all respects, primarily due to the size of the buttons (89% of the size standard keyboard), which allows you to print large texts without much stress. This article, like several others, was printed on the Aspire One. You quickly get used to the location of the buttons. It's not very convenient to use only cursors - the buttons in the lower right corner are very crowded, and the finger often touches Pg Dn or Pg Up, which are in the neighborhood, almost very close.

Many people may find it inconvenient to put symbols on buttons - Cyrillic and Latin have the same color and size, and only numbers (activated with Num Lk) are blue. Personally, this circumstance does not bother me at all.

The F-buttons are located in the top row, half of which, using the Fn modifier, allows you to put the netbook to sleep, switch between the built-in and external display, turn off the sound, etc. You can also use the Fn key and cursors to change the sound volume and screen brightness.

The touchpad on the Aspire One is stretched out horizontally. Despite the low height, vertical scrolling works even though the bar is not applied to the surface. The keys are located on the sides of the touchpad, and not under it, as is often the case. It seemed to me that using them is not very convenient, however, you can get used to their work.

Platform, performance

So, we have come to the most ambiguous, I will even say double, aspect of Aspire One.

The thing is that all attempts to make working with a netbook convenient come to an end "thanks" to Linpus Linux Lite installed on the tested model.

Acer tried to make the interface intuitive, dividing the "desktop" into 4 zones, including the main motives for future work on the Aspire One.

Let's briefly go over the contents of the sections:

connect

Reviewer- web browser Mozilla Firefox version 2.0.0.14 (upgrade to version 3.0 in the usual way it is forbidden)

IM- a communication program that supports MSN Messenger, Yahoo mesenger, Google Talk, AIM protocols (Skype support is not available, although it was promised, ICQ support is also expected "soon")

Email- mail client with support for up to 5 accounts. It also contains a contact book and a calendar.

RSS feeds- a simple program for reading RSS-subscriptions

As you can see, the manufacturer tried to implement most of the popular Internet services, but due to flaws and a rather unfriendly shell, the customization options were nullified.

The biggest surprise for me was the lack of support for Skype in applications, despite the fact that the fact of its presence appears in almost every brochure. The absence of ICQ is explained by the unavailability of the protocol for the Linux platform, but it is not clear how the application can be updated.

For example, here is a description of how you can update installed Firefox up to version 2.0.0.11 (quote from user manual):

  1. Go to http://rpm.pbone.net
  2. In the search bar, search for Firefox
  3. Select Fedora 6 from the search results
  4. After downloading, run rpm package-Uvh firefox-2.0.0.11-.1.fc6.remi.i386.rpm

By standard means, through the browser, this procedure cannot be carried out.

In the event that updates for the installed software appear, apparently, you will have to use the method presented above. Why you need to complicate everything so much - I do not understand. Most likely, these are limitations of the operating system.

Work

Text editor.

Spreadsheets- standard three applications from office suite Open Office 2.3.

Presentations.

Calendar - the same calendar that is part of the mail program.

Contacts - contact book also from the mail program.

Calculator - can be displayed both in simple form and in engineering.

Notes is an application for making small notes.

Entertainment

media master- media player

Photo Master- image viewer

Games- 11 easy games

webcam- recording video from the built-in camera

Painter- analogue of Paint

The system does not have audio and video codecs installed, which makes watching your favorite videos, trailers, and listening to music almost impossible. The way to install codecs is a bit like the process Firefox updates, which I cited above, with the only difference that the codecs still have to be registered.

Files

My documents

My music

My images

My videos

My Downloads

My files

The last item launches a simple file manager, the rest are links to the corresponding folders.

An unpleasant feature of the shell is the inability to add shortcuts to your programs. That is, if you download Skype yourself and install it, then you will have to run the program using command line which, you see, is very inconvenient.

All restrictions boil down to the following: if you are not satisfied with the capabilities provided by the firmware (and this happens in most cases), then you will have to start “dancing with tambourines” or immediately “demolish” the local Linpus and install a more familiar OC.

Personally, I finally decided to install a lightweight Windows version. However, the method tested on the EEE PC 701 did not work with the Aspire One. I gave the device to Artyom Lutfullin, he managed to adapt the netbook to Windows. True, according to Artem, in this configuration (110) Aspire One noticeably slows down, subjectively the work is even slower when compared with the installed Windows OS on the EEE PC 701. However, this is a topic for a separate discussion. In the near future, expect new materials on netbooks on our website.

Setup menu

This menu contains the following items:

Screen- allows you to choose how to display pictures from different displays (external, internal).

Energy Center- power management when running on mains or battery, the choice and configuration of three profiles: "performance", "balanced" and "energy saving", as well as the ability to create your own profile.

network center- connection manager for setting up and creating a connection to the Internet. Allows you to select the encryption method, set a password, configure DNS and TCP\IP addresses.

Sound- adjust the volume of the sound and microphone.

System- basic information about the system.

date and time- setting the date, time and time zone.

Touchpad- setting the sensitivity of the touchpad touchpad: touches and scrolls.

live update- system components update service.

Printer- search and setup of connected printers.

Input language, Keyboard- Add and manage different keyboard layouts.

User and password- setting a password.

Conclusions. Perspectives. Competitors

The fact that netbooks have found their buyer has already been shown by the high sales of Asus EEE PC 701, as well as the excitement with which they are waiting for the release of each new model. The main competitors offer devices with a screen diagonal of 8.9 inches, they have not so many differences from the Aspire One. In this case, I advise you to look first of all at the size of the buttons, the convenience of using them for you personally - try typing a small text in the store.

I also advise you to talk to the seller before buying and personally try it out operating system installed on the netbook. Even in a short time, you can understand how easy it is to communicate, how easy it is to make updates and other important points.

In the wake of the increasing popularity of netbooks, Acer plans to sell an impressive number of copies. The main motives for promotion will be the popularity of the Acer brand and the huge successful experience in the production of laptops. Planned launch advertising campaign together with one of the Wi-Fi providers, this will happen closer to the fall.

Sales of Aspire One have already begun. Acer has set the following recommended prices: 11,990 rubles for the younger model and 14,990 rubles for the older one.

The price is quite competitive, both for the younger and older models. However, I would recommend turning your attention to the second option, as the familiar Windows turned out to be more user friendly than Linux Linpus. Acer has launched a special site that promises to have programs for Linpus, but at the time of writing, nothing has appeared there. Three thousand rubles, which are asked for the older version - read twice as much memory and the installed operating system from Microsoft - not such an impressive amount for additional comfort.

If, as a result of this article, you have not decided whether you need a netbook, namely Aspire One, then I recommend waiting for the next article, which will consider competitors' offers available for free sale in our country.

In 2008, many of the largest IT companies managed to mark themselves with netbooks. Of course, ASUS succeeded most of all as the initiator of the whole movement. The Eee PC 900 and Eee PC 1000, as well as several of their modifications, left its stocks. MSI Wind U100 netbooks have become quite popular. Now the Taiwanese company is about to release the U120. Distinguished manufacturers such as HP, Dell, Fujitsu and a few more. But, unfortunately, only ASUS, MSI and Acer products have reached our shelves so far.

Acer Aspire One is one of the youngest netbooks on the market. However, his start was very rapid. First, it immediately became available in several configurations. And secondly, its price is on average slightly lower than that of analogues. By and large, the Acer netbook is something like a mixture of the ASUS Eee PC 901, 1000 and 1000H, and at the same time the MSI Wind U100. Aspire One is available with both Windows XP and Linux. Well, either a small SSD or HDD can be used as a permanent data storage. But we'll talk about the configuration later. Let's take a look at the design.

Design

Appearance Acer Aspire One is very attractive. Acer, like MSI, supplies netbooks in four different colors: dark blue, light gray, pink and brown. We got the first one.

After the Centrino platform took over the mass market, it might seem that in terms of configuration, all modern laptops are twin brothers. Although there are always some differences, of course (the most important is the size of the LCD screen), in general, even laptops of different classes offered the user approximately the same set of features. Plus or minus an additional graphics controller, plus or minus a TV tuner and a webcam. But with the advent of netbooks, it became clear what a really close configuration is - almost all netbooks on the market have such a similar filling that you can often not even look at the table of technical characteristics of the new model. And although the performance different models is not the same, but as our previous tests have shown, by and large, only the speed of the ROM matters - the rest of the subsystems are completely identical. And who among the users will pay attention to the 10-15% difference in certain tests and will understand its causes? After all, netbooks are aimed at the mass user and are positioned on the verge of consumer electronics, in close proximity to communicators, e-books and other similar devices. In other words, the majority of netbook buyers are not the kind of people who would make a purchase decision based on percentage advantage in performance tests. Here, completely different factors matter (and reviews on our tests of netbooks confirm this) - the mass of the device, battery life, reliability. We dare to add design to this series. Firstly, when choosing among almost identical devices in terms of technical characteristics, the user will inevitably give preference to a model with the best design. In the end, any high-tech "toy" also has an image function. Secondly, the proportion of the fair sex among netbook users is obviously higher than among users of full-sized laptops. No wonder some manufacturers focus on white models, moreover, even pink netbooks are on the market! However, until recently, all netbook manufacturers tried to make their devices as accessible and inexpensive as possible. The first netbooks were created as part of the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) concept, which limited the cost of a netbook to $100-$200. Accordingly, it was not necessary to require special design refinements from them. After all, the development of a bright style, and, most importantly, the high-quality materials necessary for its implementation - all this increases the final cost of the netbook.

Aspire One developers have clearly focused on the design of the model

However, there are models whose developers have focused on design. One of them, Acer's Aspire One, visited our lab. What advantages, besides an interesting design, can this model offer to the user?

Contents of delivery

The keys next to it will help you evaluate the compactness of the Aspire One box.

The look of the Acer Aspire One makes an impression even before the netbook is taken out of the box. This model comes in a brightly colored miniature cardboard box that is smaller than any of the competition - perfect for retail.

The package includes a branded case

However, the compactness of the package in this case does not mean a bad package, in addition to the netbook itself, the user will find in the box:

  • battery,
  • carrying case,
  • OS recovery CD
  • detailed user manual,
  • power supply and power cord
Looking ahead, we note that only a soft cloth is missing for wiping the case. As for the branded case, its quality and appearance are worthy of the highest praise. But, just like with other netbooks tested in our lab, the case is designed only for the netbook itself - the power adapter will not fit in it. As the test results showed, in the case of the Aspire One, this is somewhat presumptuous, but more on that below.

Like most modern netbooks, the Acer Aspire One is equipped with a 1.6 GHz Atom N270

The configuration of the Acer Aspire One confirms the words with which this article began - the design and filling of all netbooks are very similar, and the list of differences is much shorter than the list of identical elements. Like most modern netbooks, the Acer Aspire One is based on a motherboard with mobile version set Intel chips 945 series - 945GSE. The Intel Atom N270 processor with a clock speed of 1.6 GHz is paired with 533 MHz DDR2 memory (one module is installed in the laptop). It is noteworthy that the Aspire One does not provide hatches for access to replaceable components - to upgrade the netbook, the bottom panel will have to be dismantled completely.

GMA 950 graphics core built into the chipset

The graphics core - Intel GMA 950 - is built into the " north bridge» and reserves a part system memory under video RAM. The netbook's 8.9-inch LCD display and 1024x600 resolution are also familiar features, although more manufacturers are announcing larger screen sizes. But, unlike most competitors, Aspire One boasts a glossy screen finish that visually improves image clarity. However, not all users will like it, because the glossy finish glares and gets dirty easily. A 0.3-megapixel webcam is built into the screen frame. The only 8 GB SSD with ATA66 interface is used as ROM - the capacity is modest by today's standards. Apparently, the developers understood this very well, since the Aspire One is equipped with two memory card slots at once. One of them is only compatible with SD/MMC and should be used as an additional drive according to the creators' intention. The second allows you to work with SD / MMC cards, Memory Stick (including Pro) and xD. The communication controllers are a Realtek RTL8102E 10/100 Mbps adapter and an Atheros AR5007EG wireless module, which is listed as Acer InviLink in the manufacturer's specifications. But, despite the brand name, its characteristics cannot be called outstanding - it is only compatible with 802.11b / g, and does not support the faster 802.11n standard. And the saddest shortcoming is the lack of a Bluetooth module in the Aspire One configuration, because most of the competitors are already blue-toothed.

However, it should be noted here that most users connect GPRS or 3G modems via Bluetooth, and in the future Aspire One will get a built-in modem for 3G networks - this has been officially announced. There is already a slot for SIM cards - it is located under the battery, which will have to be removed to install the SIM card. However, there is no doubt that along with the 3G modem, the new Aspire One models will also have a Bluetooth module - after all, most competitors have it and the gap needs to be made up.

The package includes a miniature three-cell battery

The capacity of the included battery is 26.6 Wh

The package includes a compact three-cell accumulator battery, its capacity is 26.6 Wh. For an additional fee, the manufacturer also offers a six-cell version of the battery, according to the manufacturer, such batteries will soon appear in Russian retail. It should be noted that the dimensions of the six-cell model of the battery, of course, are larger - it noticeably protrudes beyond the dimensions of the netbook and with such a battery it will not fit in a branded case. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the Aspire One configuration is the presence of active cooling. A miniature fan is built into the netbook, hidden under a round ledge located closer to the center of the bottom panel. The noise level of this fan is very low, even in a quiet room you have to strain your ears to hear the sound of its work. At the same time, it provides a relatively low level of heating - Aspire One is noticeably "cooler" than many competitors. Summing up the description of the configuration, it should be noted that the AOA110-A modification was provided for testing. On the Russian market, Acer also offers the 150th modification (AOA150-B), the main difference of which is that a 120 GB hard drive (Serial ATA interface, 5400 rpm) is used instead of an SSD.

Design and ergonomics

The glossy surface of the lid is adorned with the Acer logo

Of course, there are no comrades for taste and color, but, according to the author, Aspire One is the most beautiful netbook presented in Russian retail at the present time. The glossy case with mother-of-pearl shimmer can be white or dark blue - it is obvious that white models are intended for the fair sex, and men will like the blue version more. As you can easily guess from the photos, a blue netbook visited our laboratory, let's describe the design in more detail using its example. The lower part of the case is made of ordinary black plastic, and top part and a lid made of blue lacquered. Unfortunately, the glossy surface of the lid and screen is very quickly covered with fingerprints, but this is perhaps its only drawback.

Lid hinges are decorated with red metal rings

LED indicators are visible both when the lid is open and closed

The hinges of the lid are adorned with red metal rings, and a few other highlights are the silver Acer and Aspire One logos on the lid and hinges. On the left side of the hinges there are four LED indicators that are visible both when the lid is open and when the lid is closed.

The light of the LED built into the power button does not irritate in the dark

A green LED window is built into the silver power button - its light is soft and dim, it does not irritate at all in the dark. At the forefront working panel there is a silver insert, on the sides of which there are LED indicators that display the operating mode of communication devices.

The netbook is compact and, most importantly, very light (compared to competitors) - exactly 1 kg. This is partly due to the active cooling system - it does not need a bulky and heavy radiator. The location of the I / O ports is well thought out, it is very convenient to use them. On the right side panel there are two USB ports, 3.5 mm audio jacks for microphone and headphones, the main slot for memory cards and an eye for a Kensington lock.

On the left side panel there is a connector for the power supply, as well as an analog VGA connector, an RJ-45 network, a third USB port and an additional slot for SD / MMC memory cards. There are no ports and connectors on the front and back (the only exception is the sliding switch wireless module on the right side of the front panel) - this is reasonable for a model that the user will often work with while holding the case on his knees.

Keyboard

As a rule, it is the keyboard that becomes one of the weakest points of the netbook. Models with a screen diagonal of up to nine inches are equipped with small and uncomfortable keyboards. And netbooks equipped with 10-inch displays, with slightly less cramped keyboards, are considered by some users to be too bulky and expensive for this type of device. But the developers of Acer found a happy medium and managed to offer a compact netbook with a comfortable keyboard. First of all, Aspire One is equipped with a keyboard with 17.5 mm pitch of alphabetic keys - previously only ASUS netbooks 1000 series. At first glance, two millimeters (most netbooks have keyboards with 15.5 mm pitch) seems insignificant, but in practice the difference is more than noticeable. After all, the size of 17.5 mm alphabetic keys is much closer to full-sized laptops (they usually have a key pitch of 18 mm) and typing is much more convenient, respectively.

The key pitch is 17.5 mm and the “arrows” are placed in a separate block

In addition, the Aspire One keyboard is distinguished by the “arrows” placed in a separate block, full-sized and well-placed other function keys. Only the key has a not too large width - the same as that of the alphabetic keys.

The manipulator buttons are located on the sides of the touch panel

The wide touchpad of the netbook also seemed convenient to us. The manipulator buttons are located on the sides of it, and not under it, as usual. This option is more convenient, since there is no risk of touching the touchpad with the middle or ring finger by pressing the button with the index finger.

Linpus

We have already mentioned the 150th modification of Aspire One presented on the market. In addition to the type of drive, it has another important difference - the Windows XP operating system. After all, on the 110th model, including the copy we tested, Linpus OS is installed - a specialized version of GNU / Linux prepared by Acer engineers, which has a simplified interface and all the necessary drivers.

The creators of the Aspire One are trying to emphasize high quality LCD?

The owner of Aspire One has the opportunity to feel like the head of the Energy Center

System interface for those supplied with Russian market netbooks completely Russified. It is really extremely simple - even the most inexperienced users can easily handle the netbook. Unless they get confused in the translation - the main items and sections of the menu are translated quite correctly, but in depth dialog boxes you can find sayings such as "Enable power management for a specific monitor." However, the main menus can please, for example, "Energocenter".

But on almost all interface pages there is a search box that allows you to search for both local documents and send a request search engines on the Internet - both are very convenient. But, nevertheless, for any experienced user, the capabilities of Linpus will not be enough, and the interface will seem too limited. Although, at first glance, everything you need is available, with prolonged use, you will definitely find the absence of the necessary codecs and some programs. Updating Linpus on your own is troublesome even for a person familiar with Linux. So if you are willing to take the time to set up drivers, it is better to install a full-fledged Linux, and if not, Windows XP.

* when testing, a 16 GB drive was used. Other netbook models, in comparison with the Aspire One, are "terrible in appearance", but they are noticeably "kinder inside" - they have a more successful configuration. However, the expected dip in the performance of the memory subsystem did not manifest itself - the gap between DDR2-533 and DDR2-667 on test tasks is minimal.

The performance of the built-in SSD is inferior to competitors

But in terms of speed, the Aspire One SSD is noticeably inferior to competitors' models, and this affects the results of other tests. Unfortunately, the PCMark05 test package passed with constant failures and it was not possible to find the cause during testing.

But from the MobileMark05 Productivity result, you can see that the Aspire One's performance is almost equal to the eee PC 901's performance when tested on the slower of its two drives (marked with an asterisk). It can be assumed that the results of the Aspire One on those tests that it failed will also be close to the values marked with an asterisk. And these values are generally less than the maximum performance of the eee PC 901. The eee PC 1000 models of the Aspire One netbook lose even more noticeably.

The battery of the Acer Aspire One in the Battery Eater Pro 2.60 test lasts for two hours

Acer Aspire One battery also takes two hours to fully recharge

However, as noted above, hardly many buyers of netbooks are seriously concerned about their performance and compare the performance of individual subsystems. There is enough power for browsing web pages, reading mail and working Skype and ICQ - and that's enough. But battery life is important for any user, and here Aspire One, alas, again lags behind competitors. At maximum load (Battery Eater Pro 2.60 Classic), battery life was just over two hours. When working in the mode of simulating normal office work (MobileMark05 Productivity), the battery lasted for three and a quarter hours, and in the most gentle mode (MobileMark05 Reader) - for three and a half hours. Not bad results for a regular laptop, but not enough for a netbook with a 9-inch screen, LED-backlit screen and an economical SSD drive.

Performance of built-in SD/MMC adapter used as additional storage

In addition, using the HD Tune program, we measured the read speed of the memory card adapter, which the developers recommend using as an additional drive. To do this, we installed a 1 GB Apacer MMC Plus 290X card in the memory card slot (the maximum data transfer rate is 43.5 Mb / s). The performance of the adapter was only marginally slower than that of the built-in SSD, so given the large capacity SD cards available on the market, it's really worth using to expand your permanent storage.

conclusions

Let's sum up the testing of the Acer Aspire One netbook.
  • Minuses: relatively low performance and average battery life
  • Pros: excellent design, light weight and compactness, excellent keyboard, thoughtful ergonomics
Demanding users are unlikely to choose this netbook for the role of a road model - competitors can offer more high performance with more battery life. But if you're getting the Aspire One as a second laptop and don't plan on using it all the time, it might be a good choice. As for the author's personal opinion, then, as in the case of the ASUS eee PC 1000, I would prefer a model with a hard drive (120 GB - a record figure for netbooks) to the tested copy and would try to find a higher-capacity battery for it. In this form, Aspire One seems to me, perhaps, the most interesting netbook offered on the market.
