Windows 7 search terms. All the secrets of Google search: there really is everything

Starting to use new system, I think you might have encountered the fact that file search in Windows 7 is organized a little differently from other operating systems. Now I will tell you about where to search in Windows 7, and also look at an example, search for files in Windows 7.

Setting up search in Windows 7

AT windows menu 7 has a built-in search bar that allows you to find not only menu programs by their name, but also files and folders. I should note that not all files are searchable, but only indexed ones, that is, those to which the system has assigned a special number called "index". If your files and folders are in standard folders, then you don't need to set up indexing.

To configure, open the "Start" menu and type "search options" and in the results select "Change search options for files and folders."

In the "Search" tab, the parameters should be as in the picture below.

I don't advise you to choose to search by file name, although at first glance this seems like a good idea, in practice it will lead to the fact that the search will not only be incredibly long, but will also give a lot of extraneous results, and therefore will not be effective. In this window, all settings are set optimally, there is no need to change anything.

Now, similarly to the previous case, we find in the "Indexing Options" menu. In the window that opens, click "Edit" and now we can select all your data folders for indexing. Do not choose system Windows folders, choose only the data you need. No need to choose like Plushkin. Will it come in handy!?

Another useful setting feature is setting indexing by extension. Click the "Advanced" button and select the "File Types" tab. Here you can add content indexing for files that you will search by content. For example, you want to search documents by content. Click on "doc" and select "Index file properties and content" at the bottom.

Now that you have everything set up, you can click "OK" and again "OK" to save the results and start searching in Windows 7 in practice!

Search in the start menu

AT previous paragraph we easily found desired programs in the start menu using the search bar, I will only add that now that your indexing system is set up, you can search not only programs, but everything necessary files and folders, and they will be conveniently grouped by type.

To consolidate, so to speak, the material, let's repeat the steps that have already been voiced in the article. To start the search, you need to click on Start and at the very bottom enter the word or phrase of the element.

Searching with Windows Explorer

In the previous chapter of the article, you could open the search window from the start menu, the same effect can be achieved by opening File Explorer or Computer. You will see a search bar at the top right of the window. You can enter there the name of a file, part of the content of files or their extension, for which you have previously configured search by content.

But this is not all the possibilities. You can enter various filters there: type, modification date, author, and others. You can see the filters by placing the cursor in the search field in one of the "Libraries" folders, the wider the field, the more filters are visible. Each of the Libraries folders has its own filters, for example, duration music file or the date the image was taken.

You can also see that now the search results can be sorted by selecting a method in the right upper corner window, and also, scrolling down the results to the end, repeat the search in other folders of the "Libraries".

And finally, I’ll add that a similar file search in windows 7 is available everywhere. You can open any folder and start searching in it. And it's very convenient!

For those who are considering switching to Windows 8:

The large volume of modern discs allows you to store many documents or multimedia files. Therefore, without initially subjecting your directories to a certain structuring, you can get complete chaos on your hard drive. If this has already happened, and you forgot the location of any files, it will not be easy to find them without knowing how to use the built-in search operating system.

Search by file name

Knowing the name of the document, you will greatly facilitate your task and after a short period of time you will already see the file you are looking for on the computer screen. There are several ways to find it by name in Windows 7.

Through the start menu

There is a search field in the start menu of the operating system. To find the required document through this field, you must:

  1. Click on the "Start" button.
  2. Find a field.
  3. Enter a name to search for.
  4. Check out the suggested results.

After entering the proposed name of the document, you will immediately be shown a list of found files:

In this case, Windows 7 was looking for a document called "Agency". As you can see from the previous screenshot, the first suggested option is the file you are looking for.

How to find in a folder?

There is another way to find documents. In every directory Windows Explorer 7 there is a corresponding field:

Therefore, knowing the name of the file and its location, you can:

  1. Open desired folder in the conductor.
  2. Enter the name of the document in the field.
  3. Get a result.

In this example, the search was conducted on the template "Biology". As a result, the following files and folders were found:

Knowing the location of the object is not necessary. It simply speeds up the search for files by the operating system. Because modern computers have high performance, the duration of finding the necessary information with a known location and with an unknown one is practically the same. If you have no idea in which folder or even on which drive the file is saved, you can search the entire computer:

Additional filters

With a common file name, you run the risk of seeing several thousand options that complicate the choice of the desired document. If you know the modification date of the file or its size, you can specify them when searching (by entering the pattern in the field, you will see the suggested filters):

You can also scroll down the found list and limit the search range by clicking the "Other" button:

After such a click, Windows 7 will display the settings window:

In this window you must:

  1. Select the desired folders to be searched.
  2. Confirm the selection with the "OK" button

After the actions taken, the number of items found in the list will decrease significantly, so finding the right one will become much easier.

How to find inside files?

The methods discussed above make it easier to search by name. But what if you don't know the name? In this case, you should know approximately the text of the document you are looking for. Windows 7 can also find files by their content. This function was not introduced in vain, because it is easier for a computer user to remember what is inside a document than to try to restore its name in memory.

By default, this way of finding files is disabled in the operating system. To enable it, you must:

  1. Open Computer in File Explorer.
  2. Press and release the ALT button (this action allows the top horizontal menu, which is normally hidden).
  3. Select "Service".
  4. Go to the "Folder Options" sub-item.

After clicking on the specified submenu, Windows 7 will display the following window:

In it you must:

  1. Go to the "Search" tab.
  2. Mark the item responsible for scanning the contents of objects;
  3. Confirm the changes with the "Apply" button.

The procedure is shown in the following screenshot:

This method significantly slows down the search for the desired object, but sometimes it is simply irreplaceable (for example, if several people use the computer). Therefore, if you don't want to wait and don't want to spend time scanning inside all documents, you can turn this option on or off as you see fit. After changing the settings, the search for the file is carried out according to the same scheme as described above, without any changes.

An example of finding a document by its content

You can find an object by any phrase, but it is especially easy to search for a file with poems. After all, it is easier to remember a line from a poem than a phrase from an accounting report. However, in the second case, a few of the most common words in the document will help you find any report.

For example, you have somewhere a document with Shakespeare's sonnets, and you remember a phrase from one sonnet: "Will you compare me." To find this collection on your computer, you need to:

  1. Open "Computer" in Explorer.
  2. Go to the desired folder (if known).
  3. Enter the phrase you remember in the search field.
  4. Get a result.

In this way, any information is found, provided that it is stored on your disk.

Properly organized search in the operating system allows you to better navigate the files on your hard drive and easily find necessary information in short time. To do this, Windows 7 has a sufficient number of settings, which we will discuss below.

In this article we will talk about how to properly and competently configure search capabilities systems. If you encounter a problem in which the search through the menu "Start" refuses to work, check out our other article at the link below.

Indexing settings

Indexing is an operating system feature that significantly speeds up searching within the operating system by compiling a "database" of files based on their contents and/or properties. Thanks to this, when typing a search query in the menu "Start" or in the field "Explorer" the system accesses the index and provides you with the information you are looking for faster. Indexing keeps track of all the files on your computer, adding and removing positions from its database as you manage them. By default, this process is already enabled in the system, but it works selectively (that is, it is distributed only to some folders of the Windows directory), for example, fast search is not available on other logical partitions ( D, E etc.) and in system folders with large quantity content type system Windows(C:\Windows). In view of the foregoing, it makes sense to configure indexing only in two cases:

  • You store files in non-standard system folders such as "My documents" and so on, but manually create directories and logical partitions on the hard drive;
  • An HDD is installed in the computer - it makes no sense to enable indexing on an SSD, since it itself works quickly and owners solid state drives It's generally better to disable it.

For all other users, we suggest using the following instructions:

  1. Open "Start" and start typing "indexing"- from the presented results, select the item "Indexing Options".
  2. In the window that opens, it immediately says how many items are indexed in total, and below are all those folders that are on this moment indexed.
  3. Only the most basic is located here, and to enable custom indexing, you need to click on the button "Change".
  4. At the top are all available directories in a tree view. Expand « local disk» , and then the subfolders of interest to find the required directories.
  5. Check the boxes for what you want to include in the indexing, and it will be transferred to the block below for a visual overview of the list of everything that will be included in the quick search.
  6. Be sure to set up exceptions: those subfolders that you do not want to be indexed. To do this, expand the folder that you added to indexing and uncheck the unnecessary subfolders. They will fall into the column "Exclude" future list of indexed elements.
  7. Pressing "OK", you will surely notice that the number of indexed elements increases.
  8. In addition to performing the main action, you can also go to advanced settings by clicking on "Additionally".
  9. Here on the tab "Indexing Options" it is possible to configure technical parameters, change the location for saving indexing data (relevant if the disk C there is little free space) and resort to indexing troubleshooting.
  10. More interesting tab "File Types"- here it is proposed to choose which file extensions will and will not be taken into account, as well as specify the type of their indexing.

Quick search for a program in Start

Often, a user's computer has many programs installed scattered throughout the hard drive. Because of this, it is far from always possible to find them through "Start", and the addition a large number not everyone likes desktop shortcuts. To fix this, it is enough to place the shortcuts of all installed and portable (portable) programs, games in a certain place in Windows.

Unfortunately, on this possibility of setting the most "Start" end - in the "seven" there are practically no settings for this menu that could be optimized to facilitate the search. However, it is possible to search inside folders through the standard system "Conductor".

Folder search settings

Often users turn to the search box inside "Explorer", which can also be customized, as well as use some of the search functions.

Now let's move on to considering the possibilities of the search field.

Using search filters

In this section we want to talk about the use of search filters that operate within the search field.

  1. By placing the input cursor in the field, you will see filters that simplify the process itself. By default, there are two main filters here:
  2. You can see more filters by expanding the field. To do this, move the mouse over the left side of the field so that the cursor appears as in the screenshot below, hold down the left mouse button and drag to the left.
  3. This will bring up additional options that match the theme of the folder.
  4. For example, the screenshot below shows filters for a shared folder.
  5. If you go to standard folder "Music", the filter set will change.
  6. To see thematic filters, you can always assign a specific type to any custom folder by right-clicking on it and selecting "Properties".
  7. On the tab "Setting" select the appropriate folder type.
  8. Place a checkmark next to "Apply the same template to all subfolders" if there are subfolders inside the folder being modified.
  9. You can also set the filter yourself by writing its name and putting a colon. Then this word will turn blue, indicating that the entered text is not part of the search query, but a filter.

A reasonable question arises - how to find out and where to get the rest of the names of the filters that you can prescribe yourself? Most of the names can be taken from the names of the columns into which the folder is divided, if it looks like a table (see screenshot below).

We will talk about this a little later (in the subsection "Ordering"), and now we want to provide a list of simplified symbolic and literal operators:

  • " " is the exact phrase.
Example: query "photo" will find all files containing the word photo.
  • * - any characters.
Example: query *.png will find all files with extension PNG, and query picture*.png will find all PNG files whose names contain the word picture.
  • AND (or +) - logical operator "AND".
Example: query picture and photo +image will find all files whose names contain these 3 words.
  • OR - logical operator "OR".
Example: the query picture or photo will find all files whose names contain one or the other word.
  • NOT (or -) - logical operator "NO".
Example: query picture not photo - image will find all files that contain the word picture but no words photo and image.
  • > is more than.
Example: a query >120mb will find all files larger than 120 megabytes, a query framewidth:>1024 will find all videos where the frame width is more than 1024 pixels.
  • Example: similar to the > filter.
  • > Example: request >2mb
  • = - exact value.
Example: query =200mb will find all files of only 200mb, query >=200mb will find all files of 200mb or more.
  • >= (or..) - strict value.
    Example: query year:>=2000

Despite the fact that the name of any filter must always be written ( flow rate:, frame width:), filter the size: there is no need to enter, so instead of a search query size:=200mb you can just write =200mb.

Often, users prefer to use the same search terms; for this, the system provides for their saving. When you have used some complex search query, you can click on the button "Save search terms", so that in the future not to type it again, but to use the template.

A save window will appear, prompting you to select a location and a name for the file.

By default, searches are saved in the Navigation Pane in "The Chosen One". From here it will be easy to call desired search and remove it from the list (RMB on save > "Delete"). Save can be called from any folder "Explorer", but it works only for the folder for which this request was created, be careful and choose better shared folder, which contains several subfolders, inside which you also need to search.

Arranging and grouping files

One way to make it easier to find files within folders is to use the organize and group functions within a folder.

ordering

First, the user should understand the possibilities of ordering, which often speeds up the search for the necessary documents and files among a large list.

  1. The columns highlighted in the screenshot below are responsible for this.
  2. For example, in our folder, you can sort by the parameter "Genre". By clicking on this word, we will see the files sorted by direction. Let's say first all the files of the genre "Electronic", then Classical" and at the end "Jazz". But since we only have 3 songs, they just changed the order.
  3. Right-clicking on a row with column names calls context menu, which contains various column values that you can add.
  4. If you don't find what you need, click on the line "More...".
  5. A list of available features will open. There are a lot of them, so you will definitely succeed in choosing the parameter that suits you. Check desired values checkboxes and click "OK".
  6. Almost all the names of these columns can be used as filters for the search field! We discussed this earlier in the section "Using Search Filters". If there are several words in the title, you need to write them without a space, and a colon is always put at the end, for example, to search by creation date, you must enter date of creation: and specify the date from the options that appear automatically.

  7. We chose "The authors". This option was immediately applied and available for use, now, by clicking on it, you can also arrange files.
  8. A small button with a triangle appears to the right of each column name when hovering over with the mouse. Click on it to see the values available for filtering. Each column is sorted differently, keep that in mind!

grouping

For convenient orientation, the folder also has a grouping function - combining files into a block according to a user-specified property. Right click on empty space, select "Group" and specify the appropriate option for this. If you don't find what you need, click on "More..." and choose it there.

Again, we chose to group by genre. All audio recordings of certain genres have become part of the lists, which can be collapsed by clicking on the black triangle to the left of the name - this will allow you to hide unnecessary positions and quickly navigate among the actual folder items.

Now you know more information about how to customize the search through the menu "Start", and inside "Explorer". All these recommendations will greatly simplify Windows usage while working with a lot of information divided into files.

Searching for files may seem difficult for novice users and take for a long time. In this article, we will look at all the ways to search for files on a computer.

Important: The search results through the Start menu display not only files, but also the search results will display the system files of the same name. windows commands. For example, entering search query"cmd" will result in a command (program) that launches the command line.

Main search box

Explorer window

The next way to find files is to use any explorer window. To search for files using Explorer, you must make a request to the appropriate section of any open window(for example - "My_computer").

This method is more convenient than the others because, using Explorer, you can search for files directly inside the specified (open) sections hard drive(folders) without having to enter the appropriate restriction through the search filter. What is significantly the file search process.

Search filters

In addition to how you find files, it's also important how you can narrow your search results to find exactly the file you're looking for. This is done through the use of special search filters, you can use them when looking for files in the explorer window. Since the submariner uses the most filters that filter out unnecessary search results.

Search settings

Sometimes the search is unable to find the file of interest, this happens if it is located inside an unindexed hard disk partition. This can be fixed if you configure, expand the search parameters. To do this, follow the instructions below.

Search Operators

Operators are symbols/words that include additional options for filtering search results. In other words, these characters are used to quickly filter out results, similar to how it is done in Internet search engines (Yandex, Google, Yahoo).

The most popular operators:

  • Quotes "" - finds files containing the exact phrases of the search query in the name (for example, "rules of the game");
  • Asterisk * - finds files of the extension specified after the asterisk (for example - *.doc);
  • Logical "AND" "AND or +" - finds files containing all the listed words, between which "AND or +" is written. (for example - "rules + game + football", "rules AND football + game");
