Due to frequent internecine wars, the city experienced either flourishing or destruction.

Impregnable towers and bastions were erected. Years have passed, Savona and Genoa peacefully coexist with each other in one beautiful country, and the military facilities erected in the past have become historical monuments.

Kitchen

Being in Italy, in Liguria, and not enjoying amazing food is an irreparable mistake!

Local dishes:

We sailed and sailed, and finally, the next morning, we reached the first stop in the Italian city of Savona. Initially, when making plans, we were skeptical about this city - the ship stays in the port all day, but I didn’t find anything particularly sensible, in the sense of what is worth seeing there, at the request of “Sights of Savona”. Well, except for the information that on Mondays in this city there is one of the largest markets in the region, and we will be there on Monday.

But here the position of the city is very strategically convenient - it is the administrative center of the province of Liguria, 40 km from Genoa, 90 km from Nice and 170 km from Milan. Monaco and San Remo are also very close. For those who are well versed in Europe and have traveled along their roads more than once, it is quite possible to visit any of these cities during the day. But I decided not to risk renting a car, so I carefully studied the train schedule in order to take my son to Monaco. I myself had already been to Liguria before and traveled from Alassio to Nice. Unfortunately for those who come to Savona with a one day cruise ship this is not an option. It turned out that, taking into account the road and the breaks in the movement of trains, two hours remained directly on Monaco. So we decided to abandon this idea.

For those who came to Liguria on vacation, I advise you to go to France, it's fast and not expensive. In the reviews, I read that it is better to go from the Italian side to Ventimiglia and change to the French train there, it seems to be cheaper. I took a direct train to Nice, as far as I remember, not expensive either. It seemed to me that it depends more on the class of the train. But for those who are planning such a trip, just in case, it is better to check the schedules in advance and compare prices for direct flights and flights with transfers at the border with France.

The not too happy expectations from the meeting with the city were aggravated by the information from the newspaper about the probable air temperature from +16 to +24. And this is after the Roman +30! It’s good if it’s “before”, but if it’s “from”? The truth was hopeful. that the map of Savona, which was given to us on the ship along with the newspaper, was full of circles marking all sorts of sights. Maybe still not so clear with this city?

Going out on deck, I realized that "the morning meets us with coolness" and "the clouds are gloomy, the edge is sternly silent." And this despite the fact that the climate of Liguria is characterized by mildness, low rainfall and 300 sunny days a year. And we managed to get on a cloudy day in June! Looking at the sky, I sadly thought that we had only one road - to the malls. Do you need to do something for yourself? After a leisurely breakfast, we went to the city. Downstairs it was not as cool as on the deck blown by all the winds, but still the air temperature left much to be desired. Next to the ship, we slowed down a little - the son set the coordinates to the navigator, so that if anything it was easy to return, and I looked at the map.

Noticing our manipulations, a security guard (either a policeman or a port employee) approached us and offered his help. Well, I asked him how to get to the market. He explained, but in a very offended voice he added that they had a lot of antiquities in their city, and the market was the market. I already wanted to start explaining that we just know the way to the sights, they are all on the map. And we have a lot of time that we will have time everywhere. What... But he's already gone.

It would seem that what difference does it make to me what the Italian security guard thinks about us, whom I will never see again, but I still have regret that I did not tell him where we were going to go, that I did not later share my impressions of how much we liked him city. After all, we unexpectedly liked the truth of Savona very much. If only we were lucky with the weather! Dark clouds and a couple of times it began to drizzle slightly spoiled the pleasure of the walk, but did not prevent us from appreciating the beauty of the city.

Savona is a port city and is not promoted by Russian tour operators as a vacation spot. I don’t know about others, but I heard about it for the first time only in connection with the cruise route. Meanwhile, it has very ancient roots - in the middle of the Bronze Age there already existed a settlement that bore the name "Savona". As an alternative to Genoa, subject to Rome, during the second Punic War, Savona became the Ligurian center. Even when Rome managed to subjugate Savona, she tried to oust Genoa from the role of the main port of Liguria. It was in Savona that Columbus lived for some time after his departure from Genoa. Despite centuries of competition with Genoa, Savona is still Italy's leading port and it is from here that Fiat products are shipped all over the world.

The main attraction of the city is the 15th century fortress Fortezza del Priamar. But for some reason, during my search for information about Savona, I came across very few references to her. And right next to the port is the 14th-century observation tower Torre Leon Pancaldo. Curiously, she received the name in honor of Magellan's assistant, who helped him round Cape Horn.

It is worth visiting the Santa Maria Assunta church, which was designed by Battista Sormano. It houses the Cappella Sistina. Pope Sixtus IV ordered the construction of this chapel (the man was active, he managed to do everything!). And also the monument to Garibaldi and the old Campanassa bell tower! It's great to hear the bells ringing in the old city! No less interesting is the church of San Giovanni Battista with a collection of paintings from the 17th-18th centuries and the Torre del Brindale, dating from the 12th century. Art lovers can visit the art gallery located in the Palazzo Pozzobonello.

We also visited the market. So, "the largest in Liguria" as some sources call it, I still would not call it. The market is a mixed clothing and food market. I didn’t find anything sensible for myself personally there, I saw better Italian markets. So the guard was right, the market is the market, there is nothing to see there. But yes, the fortress is impressive!

Another advantage of Savona, I would attribute the fact that all the sights are located very compactly, and, having bypassed the historical center, we saw everything that was marked on our map. The layout of the old city is clear and convenient, we didn't even need a navigator to find our way back to the port.

Near Savona is the resort town of Noli, famous for its medieval castle. I can't objectively rate the beaches of Savona because the weather is unsuitable for swimming. But in appearance they look quite attractive - clean and sandy (which is not found everywhere in Liguria).

So, despite the cloudy weather, we had surprisingly bright and pleasant impressions of Savona. Somehow, imperceptibly, we walked along it almost the whole day and returned shortly before sailing. Next to our ship, a boat was swaying, taking those who wished to Portofino. But we did not regret that we did not go to the neighboring famous cities and glamorous villages. We were glad that we got to know Savona.

Savona is a cozy southern corner, located on the shores of the gentle Ligurian Sea. This city is famous for its history, it charms travelers who come to visit it with narrow medieval streets and hot sun. It seems to be the earthly embodiment of peace and tranquility, and the fact that Savona rarely shines on the pages of tourist brochures plays a role in this. But in vain.

View of the city and the observation tower of Leon Pancaldo, which opens from cruise ships moored in Savona

After all, it is here that you can find fresh air, friendly smiles on the faces of local residents willingly explaining to tourists what's what, and, of course, a large number of attractions that can be easily reached, because the port is located in the city center.

So, the whistle sounds, announcing that the ship has arrived at the port, we go ashore ... Welcome to Savona! The city meets with true Italian hospitality - fresh wind and clear sun. It is difficult to catch cloudy weather here: the local sky pleases with the absence of clouds for most of the year. Already from here you can see the main attraction of Savona - the Genoese fortress Fortezza del Priamar. Once the main protection of the city from the sea, now this majestic and even somewhat gloomy building rises above the houses, attracting the attention of tourists.

Religious legacy

But we will go to the fortress a little later. We turn onto a small street Piazza del Brandale and head to the first attraction on our way - the Sistine Chapel. It was erected in the distant XV century by order of Pope Sixtus IV, the same one who ordered the foundation of the church of the same name in the Vatican. They were built almost simultaneously, but if the metropolitan version in a single moment became the pilgrimage center of the entire Catholic world, the historical path of the Savona chapel turned out to be less triumphant. It was erected as a tomb for the noble and powerful Italian family of della Rovere, from which Sixtus IV came.

Behind discreet whitewashed walls is a luxurious hall, decorated with rich stucco and frescoes. Gilded wood carvings, marble tombstones, an ancient mechanical organ - this place impresses and enchants at first sight.

The Savona Sistine Chapel adjoins the Cathedral. If you wish, you can also look into the Diocesan Museum - a small treasure museum that has collected a rich collection of all kinds of church relics.

great canvases

And on the neighboring streets, a 3-minute walk from the cathedral, there is a city pinacoteca - Pinacoteca Civica. To get into it, you will have to go around a small cafe and look into the arch, where the entrance to the museum is hidden. It is not easy to get around all the exhibition halls, of which there are 22 here. But it's worth it, because the works of art stored here are real masterpieces, the creations of the hands of the masters of Northern Italy. You can also buy memorabilia here.

Snack time!

Having seen enough of the paintings, painted ceramics and other artistic values, we go out into the street. Our feet lead us along a straight street leading right into the Pinakothek. And for good reason, because it is here, on Vico dei Crema, that you can find, perhaps, the most authentic cafe in all of Savona. It's called Fette Panissa Via Pia, and you won't find a better snack. It’s true that you won’t be able to sit down here, but it’s not scary either - for the sake of appetizing panissa, one of the oldest Ligurian dishes, you can endure it. The deft hands of an elderly Italian woman will cut the dough kneaded from chickpeas into the thinnest slices, fry them right before your eyes and generously fill them with a paper bag. Romance! A rare chance to feel like a true Italian, at least for a few minutes touching the culinary heritage of this great country.

By the sea

After having a snack and washing down panissa with cool drinks, you can return to the embankment. Stand a little on the shore, breathe in the salty sea air, admire the ships arriving at the port, exposing your face to the rays of the bright southern sun - and back to the historical part of the city!

You don’t have to walk for a long time, a couple of steps from the embankment is the symbol of the city, the image of which is often found on Savona’s magnets and postcards - the observation tower of Leon Pancaldo or, in Italian, Torre Leon Pancaldo. This is all that remains of the fortress wall, which once towered on the seashore. It is enough to look at the turret, built of durable sand-colored blocks, to literally feel the breath of centuries. Named after Magellan's assistant, who was born in this city, it reminds us of the heyday of navigation, when great people made great discoveries, when the world seemed truly boundless, and only a very brave person could break into a journey.

Lookout tower of Leon Pancaldo in Savona

By the way, they say that it was in Savona that Christopher Columbus, the legendary discoverer of America, spent his youthful years. Even the address is given - Via Belvedere 7. Not the very center of the city, rather, its outskirts. It is hardly possible to get there on foot - this house separates as much as 4 kilometers from the port. And no one will let you inside, now it is just a residential building, one of many. Nevertheless, this place looks very attractive: here the beauty of the Italian land is revealed in all its grandeur to the gaze of a casual observer. The green caps of the branches of trees pulling to the sky, the wild coast strewn with huge stones, on which the sea waves hiss, the cries of free gulls, flowers, fruits, the dazzling radiance of the sun, the mountains towering in the distance - a fairy tale, and nothing more.

ancient fortress

But back to our tour. Most of it is already behind, only the main Savonian attraction remains - the Primar fortress. Along the coast we head straight to our destination. The entrance to the territory of the fortress is free, a wide stone bridge leads us under the vaults of a heavy stone arch. It is worth climbing up to enjoy the view of Savona from its main observation deck. The ancient cannons encountered along the way remind of the original purpose of the fortress - an urban outpost, the first and main obstacle on the way of sea raiders, allowing civilians to live in peace, hiding behind its strong walls.

Fortress Primar in Savona

And in the courtyard hides an archaeological museum and an art gallery. It makes sense to look into the second only for those who are an ardent lover of this type of art. For everyone else, after visiting the Pinakothek, the collection is hardly of particular interest. But the archaeological museum seems much more curious.

Time relax

Having enjoyed the legacy of ancient culture, it's time to breathe freely - our walk through the curious places of Savona has come to an end. You can sit on the seashore, take a fancy to the table of the cafe located here, or go a little further - to the La Tana del Luppolo restaurant, recognized as the best in the city according to Tripadvisor visitors. To do this, you will need to get off at Corso Giuseppe Mazzini and head further from the port. Seeing a large supermarket on your left, you need to turn left and exit onto Via Buscaglia 5r. True, it should be taken into account: now about 2 kilometers separate us from the port, and if time does not allow, it is better not to go so far and choose a place for dinner somewhere closer.

The path covered today is worthy of encouragement - we walked around the entire historical center of Savona, paying attention to the main attractions of the city. Of course, much has gone unnoticed - why not come back some other way? Moreover, Savona is the base port of the Costa Crociere company, so it is often found on the itineraries of this cruise company.

And now, time does not endure, it's time to return to the liner. Let's look around the city with a farewell glance, breathe in the evening coolness, taking with us not only a lot of impressions, but also the amazing atmosphere of Savona, its peaceful and calm grandeur, bearing the imprint of history. See you soon, Savona!
