Slow motion on the Samsung Galaxy S7: a test of practice. Slow motion on the Samsung Galaxy S7: practical test Protection against moisture and dust

Slow motion has become one of the key innovations samsung galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. Smartphones can render it at 240 frames per second. However, in practice, some users of new products have encountered technical problems.

Let us immediately note that Russian buyers who purchase Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge officially imported into the country, this shouldn't worry. Smartphones based on Exynos 8890, technical problems with the slow motion function are not peculiar.

But the American and Chinese copies of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, have them. Actually, the problems are twitches of the image, which occur from time to time, and which are quite noticeable to the human eye and can spoil the viewing experience. Although, in our opinion, the examples below do not have anything particularly terrible.

This time-lapse test on the Samsung Galaxy S7 was conducted by experts from the reputable phonearena resource.

If this is a software problem, then it can be solved a simple update firmware. If it is buried somewhere deeper on the camera + software + Snapdragon 820 bundle, then the solution will be more complicated. However, we hope that this is unlikely.

We remind you that Russian buyers official Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge do not face these problems, just like the owners of new products from the CIS countries and Europe.

While the mid-range line from the South Korean manufacturer is undergoing significant changes, its luxury counterpart continues to stubbornly hold the position of Samsung's leading flagship. The model under consideration today is one of the oldest representatives of the country of Morning Calm in the smartphone market. And it's not just for the beautiful design. Details - in our review Samsung smartphone Galaxy S7 Edge.

Specifications Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

It is quite logical that from a smartphone that proudly bears the title of the most expensive among its fellows, one should expect decent technological equipment. And in comparison with younger models, this is true. Even despite significant changes in the 2017 A-line smartphones, last year's Galaxy S7 Edge is in no way inferior, and in many ways surpasses the average class.

Frame

Like its S6 edge predecessors and the similar edge+ model, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge has a curved display at the edges. However, this time the developers did not rush from one extreme to another and made the size of the flagship medium and quite acceptable. The case is 72.6mm wide, 150.9mm long and just 7.7mm thick. The weight of the phone is 157 g.

Three color options are available to the buyer to choose from: black diamond, dazzling platinum and silver titanium (black, gold and silver in the common people).

The case itself looks quite standard for most Samsumg models. Most of the front of the smartphone is occupied by the screen, below it there is a mechanical “Home” button with a built-in fingerprint scanner and touch “Return” and “ Context menu". Top, as you might guess, speaker, lens front camera along with its built-in flash, proximity sensor, and, of course, the logo of a South Korean company.

The samsung s7 ebge case is made of 3D glass and metal. The developers abandoned the border that cuts into the hand

In the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, the creators decided to abandon the metal edging around the edge of the most noticeable home button. Enough good decision, which wins the device some style points. However, at the same time, the aluminum frame around the entire perimeter of the phone remained in its place and, in general, it became a little thicker compared to its predecessor. No matter what, you don’t want to let your smartphone out of your hands at all. And the reason for this is the curved 3D glass that covers the flagship on both sides.

Glass Corning Gorilla Glass 4, in turn, has an oleophobic coating, which means that your gadget is now reliably protected from dust and scratches, and also does not glare in the sun like a polished basin. Many users, however, noted that the phone has a small minus, namely, strong soiling. In other words, any fingerprint remains a very noticeable stain on the case.

Technical filling

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge rightfully takes the leading place among its fellows. The phone is equipped with the most advanced technological developments, and you will not see such a powerful and advanced "stuffing" in any of the younger models of the company. This flagship has an octa-core Exynos 8890 Octa processor with clock frequency at 2.3 GHz. The device copes well with a lot of resource-intensive costs due to the competent distribution of tasks between the 2.3 GHz and 1.6 GHz Cortex-A53 cores. The graphics accelerator Mali-T880 MP12 is responsible for a decent picture, which, in comparison with the Mali-T780 in the S6 Edge model, produces an 80% (!) Better result.

The S7 Edge has operating system Google Android 6.0.1 as well as the TouchWiz shell. The last one adds general view systems some lightness and simplicity. At the same time, its traditional “sticking” has not disappeared. True, they are not very noticeable.

Protection against moisture and dust

The S7 Edge also boasts that its body, among other things, is made according to the IP68 standard. You can safely take your smartphone with you to the bathroom, pool, get it out of your pocket in heavy rain or a sandstorm. After all, the IP68 standard guarantees your favorite device protection from moisture and dust ingress. It is important to note that not only the monolithic design protects the "organs" of the flagship. The components of its board are carefully impregnated with a special water-repellent solution. By the way, you will not find any stubs. All vulnerable points (for example, speakers, microphones and USD connector) are reliably protected by special waterproof membranes.

Fast and wireless charging

The convenience of the phone adds the possibility of both accelerated wired and wireless charging. As the developers promise, your device will be half charged in half an hour, and for full recovery battery will take another 60 minutes. However, for such fast charging there are conditions: the screen must be in sleep mode all this time. AT otherwise the current strength drops noticeably and the rate of replenishment of the battery is greatly reduced. The same effect is observed with wireless charging (Qi and PMA standard) - 100% in 1 hour 40 minutes.

Working with games

The phone also has one interesting application called GameTools. As you might guess, it allows the user to optimize the game process as much as possible. You can temporarily block the touch buttons at the bottom of the panel, minimize the game, take screenshots. And now the most amazing thing. The power of the phone is enough not only for resource-intensive games. It is enough to record gameplay and even stream.

Front camera is good but not perfect

Other "goodies"

The quality of the recorded video is truly varied. Here you have GA, and HD, and 1: 1, and Full HD, and Full HD with 60 fps. The available resolution does not end there. The phone can record in both QHD and even UHD, better known as 4K resolution.

Extensive video camera settings will appeal not only to amateurs, but also to professionals

Add to this several recording modes (slow-motion and time-lapse shooting), as well as the ability to create a video collage and conduct live broadcasts. And do not forget that all this without loss of quality can be done in low light conditions.

Video: An example of slow motion on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

In general, the camera in the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge gives its owner simply incredible opportunities. Despite the fact that the resolution of the lenses has decreased, the quality of the shooting has not suffered at all. A big plus is the ability to separately configure each parameter, the choice of blank modes, as well as their variety. It should also be noted how clear and detailed pictures are obtained even in low light conditions. Undoubtedly, the phone stands out from most of its peers. And it is thanks to the excellent camera that he can claim the leading place among the flagships.

Open the left navigation bar in the camera app. To do this, click on the arrow in the upper left corner (if the smartphone is in a horizontal position) or in the upper right corner (in a vertical position). Here you will find a huge number of settings that you can explore and experiment with. We will discuss many of them below. Also tap on "Mode" on the bottom right side of the screen to see the available shooting modes.

2. View your photos

When you click on the camera settings icon we mentioned in the first tip, look for "Photo Viewer" which can be turned on. Just like on digital SLR or compact cameras, this feature allows you to quickly see how the picture turned out. This function is useful in order not to store a million unnecessary photos on your device.

3. Shoot like a pro

By selecting "Mode", you can select the "Pro" option to turn your smartphone into a professional camera with manual control of settings. Pro mode is heaven for photography enthusiasts. When enabled, the main camera screen is configured to show a second navigation setting on top of the main screen of the camera app, plus changes the options in the normal navigation bar. You can manually adjust the autofocus, change the white balance, change the optical image stabilization (ISO is 1250 in auto mode), adjust the shot speed and compensate the exposure. The navigation bar has been modified to add some context sensitive functionality. You can choose between multi-point autofocus or center autofocus, three metering modes (center, matrix and spot). You can also select RAW shooting from the settings menu.

4.CtakeRAW

Turn on RAW shooting You can use the camera settings menu. With this option enabled, the S7 automatically saves each photo in two types - as uncompressed and raw RAW .DNG and JPG files. To view RAW images, you will need an additional software tool like Adobe Lightroom. Such files cannot be viewed in the device itself, in addition, they can quickly take up precious memory. However, with RAW files you get so much information about the image that many poorly taken photos can be easily saved with a photo editor.

5. Manual shutter speed adjustment (especially in low light conditions)

In Pro mode, manual adjustment can be especially helpful in minimizing image blur. And that's why. Smartphone cameras often slow down the shutter speed by 1/5-1/15 second in low light conditions to maximize the amount of light entering. If you and the subject are both still, you can get a good picture, but often the pictures come out blurry. If you manually set the speed in the range of 1/30-1/60, you will have a better chance of getting a clear image. This tip will be even more helpful if you are shooting in RAW, as such images have more data and can be adjusted to compensate for poor exposure.

6. Turn on the lines

Turn on "Grid Lines" in the camera settings to get two options for the image. The first one allows you to use "Grid Lines" to follow the "Rule of Three". It means that you must place the object at the intersection point of the grid, since the viewer's eye first stops at them.

The second option for Instagram lovers with almost imperceptible square areas formed by lines superimposed on each other. You can view the resulting image in full, or you can choose a square photo optimized for a social network.

7. View your compositions

While you're aligning the image to grab the viewer's primary attention, keep an eye on what's in the background. Keep out foreign objects, tangled wires, cutlery, or even people passing through at the wrong time. Feel free to move the elements around or ask your subjects to move in Right place. Cleaning up the background and optimizing the composition will help your subject fit perfectly into the frame and make the image itself more convincing.

8. Lock exposure and focus

For more breathtaking photos, lock exposure and focus by tapping and holding on your point of interest. This allows you to adjust the composition while you adjust the exposure. In Pro mode, you can use manual focus and macro fine-tuning, as well as features that add versatility to the camera.

9. Take advantageHDRAuto

By enabling HDR Auto, you get all the benefits of high dynamic range images. One click automatically takes the best of the bright and dark parts of the scene to create a balanced image. If the subject is backlit, this is a great way to improve the image without using the flash.

10. Disabling flash

You may need a flash for some shots. But in most cases, the flash on a smartphone is not the right solution and very often it gives too much light for this environment. This is especially true if the distance to the subject is small, for example, when shooting food. The Galaxy S7 has a relatively wide open f/1.7 lens, which means it can handle low light without needing a flash. This is better than even the Apple iPhone 6s/6s Plus which have f/2.2 lenses.

11. Experiment with focus and background

Photo enthusiasts have long exploited the lens's ability to create shots with a sharply focused subject and a blurred background. Samsung makes it possible to take advantage of this option by prompting you to take a photo by choosing a focus point and changing the background. To select this feature, press Mode and select Selective Focus.

12. Avoid digital zoom

You should avoid using the digital zoom on your smartphone: it has the effect of cropping the photo so that clarity and detail is lost when you zoom in. If there is a need for digital zoom, use your fingers to zoom in or use the volume buttons on the S7 when shooting. If you cannot do without magnification, use an additional case for an external lens. It has a carving back cover to attach a wide-angle or telephoto lens. Priced at around $120, the dual external lens makes the photo upscaling process the most viable.

13. Take photos on the move

14. Create a moving panorama

15. Capture motion with burst mode

While the burst mode is interesting on other devices, the S7 makes it very convenient thanks to its blazingly fast autofocus. Press and hold the volume up button to start burst shooting. Keep in mind that this mode Works only in good lighting, it will not work in a darkened room.

16. Take photos and videos at the same time

Sometimes while shooting a video, you notice something that you would like to capture in a photo. Now you can take a picture of this frame without interrupting the video by pressing the round camera button located under the video stop button.

17. InChoose your photo aspect ratio and resolution

On the left navigation panel, next to your image in the lower part of it, above the gear sign, you will find an icon with the aspect ratio and photo resolution. Samsung allows you to choose from six preset options, representing two photo resolutions and three aspect ratio options: 4:3 (standard 35mm photo), 16:9 - widescreen photo and 1:1 square. The latter is intended for those who like to post their photos on Instagram.

Changing the video resolution is also hidden in the settings menu. The default is 1,920 x 1080 at 30fps, so if you want UHD 4K 3840 x 2160 video, you need to change that in the settings.

18. Take easy selfies and choose your selfie look

If you want to take a selfie, then you will need to switch to the front camera. Click "Mode" in the lower right corner to select one of the 4 options available for the front camera. We have already mentioned these shooting mode options for changing the photo modes of the rear camera. A wide selfie lets you take a panorama from left to right. But in low light conditions, you can end up with blurred image. You can use the front flash, but this can affect the final color, so you need to experiment in different environments with the flash on and off. To take a selfie, place your finger on the heart rate monitor on the back or hold your smartphone upright. You can also choose one of the effects if you want to make your selfie unusual. For example, you can customize the shape of the face and eyes. Effects can be subtle, but beneficially changing the final photo.

19. Organize a live broadcast

In the era of live video, you can use your smartphone to stream with the rear or front camera. Click the "Mode" button to select this feature and host your content directly on YouTube.

20. Create video collages

The video collage feature can be used with both front and rear cameras. It allows you to create short videos (3,6,9 or 12 seconds) that can be easily published to in social networks. You can choose from 10 layouts. The final result can be saved and published as an MP4 file. The settings for this mode are located on the left navigation bar, where the timer button becomes contextual, showing options for length and aspect ratio in the layout.

21. Use a timer

The timer button can be customized according to your needs. Preset options are 2, 5 and 10 seconds, as well as 3 shots in a row. The last option is a guarantee that at least one of the photos will have everyone with their eyes open and looking at the camera, or at least in its direction.

22. Use a virtual shot to get a 360 degree view

Well, not exactly 360 degrees, but pretty close. The virtual shooting mode is available for the rear and front cameras and allows you to rotate the subject, which creates a vivid image of the selected subject. The effect you get will depend on how long you take the panoramic photo around the subject.

23. Choose your filters

If you want to add effects while shooting, the S7 makes it very easy. Click "Effect" at the top of the left navigation bar and choose from nine default filters. Other effects can be downloaded additionally. If you're in Pro mode, you get a different set of effects, but they're not available in the left navigation bar, but at the top of the Pro mode's right navigation bar.

24. Use buttons

For quick access to the camera, go to the settings menu of the camera application to enable quick access by double-clicking on the Home button. This is one of the most convenient ways to turn on the camera on smartphones that I've seen. You can take pictures by pressing the volume up and down buttons. Thus, you can take pictures much faster, capturing good moments. If you want to change the settings for these keys, for example to start capturing a video or use them to zoom in on an image, you can change this in the camera settings.

25. Use built-in editing tools

The Gallery app for S7 has many editing tools built into the system. Some of them are quite standard, such as contrast, brightness and color tone change. But there are others, in particular, the photo cropping tool allows you to cut out part of the picture and move it to another environment. I especially liked the drawing tool, which allows you to make notes on images.

The concept of slow motion is far from new (the first such mode appeared in the LG Viewty line of camera phones from 2007/8). The feature began to gain popularity after the release of the iPhone 5s, which introduced the Slow (Slo-Mo) mode. Nowadays, almost all flagships and high-end smartphones are equipped with a slow-motion feature.

In most cases, professional equipment is used to achieve this result, which is capable of recording video material at a frequency of up to several hundred thousand frames per second. The two most popular smartphones today, and , have a slightly lower speed - 240 frames per second, but this is quite enough for amateur-level video recording. We have repeatedly seen with the effect of slow motion, created on mobile devices. The journalists of the PhoneArena edition wondered which of the smartphones dominates in this aspect.

As it turned out, when recording video at 240 frames per second, both devices are automatically limited to a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. iPhone 6s allows you to record at 120 frames per second at a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. The Galaxy S7 does not have this feature.

It should be noted that both gadgets are capable of playing material recorded in slow motion mode at a frequency of 30 frames per second and a bit rate of about 9000 kb / s. In terms of sound reproduction, the iPhone 6s performed better (187 kbps at 44 kHz) than the Galaxy S7 (127 kbps at 48 kHz). In this aspect, the iPhone 6s has the advantage, but given that the sound is not so important here, the advantage is not so significant.

In terms of playback quality, both smartphones were on top. However, the quality galaxy images S7 and iPhone 6s are slightly different. For instance, Galaxy sensor S7 allows you to take sharper pictures than iPhone 6s. Smartphone from Samsung was better in other aspects. Frames shot on the Galaxy S7 have less noise and are much wider in size.

In connection with the restrictions imposed by Apple from the iPhone 6s to a computer without loss in quality, it is quite difficult, PhoneArena journalists note. In particular, if you try to download a recording directly from your smartphone's storage, it will play as regular video, and sending via email or iMessage will result in loss of quality. The only solution in this situation would be to use free application iMovie. That is, you will first have to import the entry into the application, and then export it to your computer. Galaxy owners S7 simply drag and drop the file from the device to the computer.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and iPhone 6s have almost the same editing features, including the ability to trim a video, manually set the start and end time of a video, and more.
