Very soon the streets will be covered with a white shroud of snow, indicating the approach of the winter holidays - a time when the soul wants fun, and the wallet shudders nervously from the requests and wishes of the owner. New Year's time is a good time to update your smartphone and buy equipment in general. Not only buyers and savvy sellers are preparing for it, but also manufacturers who are trying to get to the market with new products just in time for the holidays.

The smartphone that we will talk about today will appear on our shelves in December. This device is most likely not destined to become a mass model, but it will definitely find its buyer.

Features of ALCATEL ONETOUCH POP 3

ALCATEL ONETOUCH POP 3 is a mid-price smartphone with an interesting design, support for two SIM cards, balanced characteristics and a very attractive price tag. The phone will be released in two versions, which differ in screen diagonals - 5 and 5.5 inches. Different colors and case materials will also be available, namely: black and white leather, plastic in gold or silver.

A 5.5-inch phablet came to visit us and, based on the test results, I can compare it with. The ALCATEL ONETOUCH POP 3 has a similar feel - a device that gives you every penny of your money's worth and costs less than $150. In Ukraine, for example, the device is expected to cost UAH 3,200 at the start of sales, which is very, very cheap. This is worth considering while reading the review.

Specifications

Design and ergonomics

ALCATEL ONETOUCH POP 3 looks quite catchy in silver color. This color, like the gold one, can be recommended to girls. The corners of the device are rounded. For its size, the smartphone fits well in the hand. Above the screen, in addition to the usual proximity and light sensors, there is led indicator notifications. Below the display there are three touch buttons made in the style of Android L. The appearance of the central button of ALCATEL ONETOUCH POP 3 vaguely resembles Meizu smartphones. It remains visible even when the backlight is off. But you will learn about the existence of the “Back” and “Multitasking” buttons only after unlocking the device.

The layout of the ALCATEL ONETOUCH POP 3 controls raises questions. I think it would make sense to swap them. The volume buttons and the power/lock button are easy to feel blindly and have a clear, short stroke, but at the same time you have to constantly reach for the latter with your finger. Here, a more rational design approach from Sony would be when the power button is placed in the middle of the side edge, under the volume buttons.

From the pleasant - back cover made in the form of a bathtub, respectively, if desired, you can completely change the appearance and buttons of your companion. Under the cover there is a pair of microSIM slots and a card slot microSD memory. The battery is non-removable and covered with a metal plate.

The build quality of the device is at an average level. The lid fits securely, but in some places it bends a little under pressure.

Screen

ALCATEL ONETOUCH POP 3 boasts a 5.5″ screen with IPS matrix and HD resolution (1280×720 pixels). The pixel density is 267 per inch, which is very good. As befits an IPS matrix, the display pleases with good viewing angles and good behavior in the sun. But still, there is no need to create illusions; the screen is inferior in color rendering quality to the same, for example.

Automatic brightness adjustment in our case is a strange thing, it seems to be there, but it’s as if it’s not. It works only within small limits and for drastic changes you will have to pull the slider manually. However, this moment can be attributed to the characteristics of the test sample.

Cameras

Despite the fact that ALCATEL ONETOUCH POP is equipped with 3 modules of 5 and 2 MP, a modification with an 8 MP main camera and a 5 MP front camera will be supplied to Ukraine.

The smartphone camera is very, very good (keep the cost in mind). Yes, it blurs the pictures a little, yes, the panoramic pictures lack detail, but these are forgivable moments given the modest price tag. On the other hand, ALCATEL ONETOUCH POP 3 boasts fairly fast focusing and good quality macro shots. It’s better not to show pictures taken in the dark to anyone, but pictures taken indoors with flash turn out very good.

In terms of video, everything is quite familiar. The limit value is shooting FullHD videos at 30 frames per second.

Performance and filling

The contents of the smartphone fully correspond to the price tag and expectations from the device. Mathematical calculations are carried out by the quad-core MediaTek MT6580M. “Cold” Cortex A7 cores operate at a frequency of 1.3 GHz. The Mali-400 video accelerator is responsible for rendering graphics. There is 1 GB of RAM on board, 8 GB of permanent memory, expandable using microSD cards.

If we talk about the speed of applications, everything is at a quite decent level. Naturally, there are slight delays and frame losses, but in general, ALCATEL ONETOUCH POP 3 does not allow itself to “think” much, even when working with several applications at the same time.

The device is good for work, but average for toys. The last aspect is well illustrated by the Antutu benchmark, in which the smartphone scores about 20,000 points. This means that ALCATEL ONETOUCH POP 3 will run most games without problems, but it will either not cope with “heavy” ones or will ask you to lower the display quality settings.

The smartphone remains cool under any load, be it a couple of hours of playing or watching a movie, which is good news.

Software and shell

One of the merits of ALCATEL ONETOUCH POP 3 is the OS version - Android 5.1. The manufacturer got a little tricky with the “naked” operating system, adding both useful elements and doing outright nonsense. Useful features include lock screen add-ons that allow you to customize buttons quick launch For important functions, branded music player, which can play music by folders.

I also liked the additional desktop called ONETOUCH STREAM, which shows the weather, feed current news and so on important information a la simplified Google Now.

But I was frankly surprised by the huge size of the colorful icons. On the one hand, they add personality to pure Android L, but on the other hand, they look like a kind of hello from the past.

If we talk about the impressions of working with the device as a whole, I am very pleased with the speed that is obtained as a result of the interaction of a modest processor from MTK and Android fifth iteration with its performance optimizations that allow the hardware to be fully revealed. With the release of Lollipop, it seems to me that many budget devices will receive a new life and will gradually cease to be associated among users with “clumsy clunkers.”

Autonomy, sound, call quality

The smartphone has one multimedia speaker, it is located near the camera. The speaker is loud enough not to miss incoming calls or listen to music in the apartment.

There are no complaints about the quality of communication; the interlocutor can always be heard well and clearly.

But the autonomy of ALCATEL ONETOUCH POP 3 was very, very surprising. The smartphone lives quietly for about two days of active use, giving an average of six hours of screen time.

conclusions

ALCATEL ONETOUCH POP 3 is a very good device. Being in the price segment up to $150, it earns every penny invested in it. In contrast to minor assembly flaws, peculiarities of the camera and not the most advanced hardware, the device can contrast with an attractive appearance with the possibility of customization, support for two SIM cards, decent autonomy and Android latest(mass) version.

If we talk about competitors, old friends from the camps of Lenovo, Meizu (M2), Xiaomi (Redmi Note) and thoroughbred Chinese immediately pop up. If you pay a little extra, you can look away Sony Xperia E4, LG G3 Stylus. True, the latter look a little sluggish, at least due to the even more modest screen resolution.

Liked:

  • nice appearance and build quality
  • screen matrix
  • support for two SIM cards and 3G networks
  • almost clean firmware
  • decent autonomy
  • reasonable cost

Did not like:

  • the lid is a little squeaky
  • camera image detail
  • nuances of the branded shell

Accelerometer(or G-sensor) - sensor of the device’s position in space. As the main function, the accelerometer is used to automatic change orientation of the image on the display (vertical or horizontal). Also, the G-sensor is used as a pedometer; it can control various functions of the device by turning or shaking.
Gyroscope- a sensor that measures rotation angles relative to a fixed coordinate system. Capable of measuring rotation angles in several planes simultaneously. A gyroscope together with an accelerometer allows you to accurately determine the position of the device in space. Devices that use only accelerometers have lower measurement accuracy, especially when moving quickly. Also, the capabilities of the gyroscope can be used in modern games for mobile devices.
Light sensor- a sensor that sets the optimal brightness and contrast values for this level illumination The presence of a sensor allows you to increase the battery life of the device.
Proximity sensor- a sensor that detects when the device is close to your face during a call, turns off the backlight and locks the screen, preventing accidental clicks. The presence of a sensor allows you to increase the battery life of the device.
Geomagnetic sensor- a sensor for determining the direction of the world in which the device is directed. Tracks the orientation of the device in space relative to the magnetic poles of the Earth. The information received from the sensor is used in mapping programs for terrain orientation.
Atmospheric pressure sensor- sensor for precise measurement of atmospheric pressure. Is a part GPS systems, allows you to determine altitude above sea level and speed up location determination.
Touch ID- fingerprint identification sensor.

Satellite navigation:

GPS(Global Positioning System - global positioning system) - satellite system navigation, providing measurement of distance, time, speed and determining the location of objects anywhere on Earth. The system is developed, implemented and operated by the US Department of Defense. The basic principle of using the system is to determine location by measuring distances to an object from points with known coordinates - satellites. The distance is calculated by the delay time of signal propagation from sending it by the satellite to receiving it by the antenna of the GPS receiver.
GLONASS(Global Navigation Satellite System) - Soviet and Russian satellite navigation system, developed by order of the USSR Ministry of Defense. The measurement principle is similar to the American system GPS navigation. GLONASS is designed for operational navigation and timing support for land, sea, air and space-based users. The main difference from the GPS system is that GLONASS satellites in their orbital motion do not have resonance (synchrony) with the rotation of the Earth, which provides them with greater stability.
