Design: iPhone 2G is alive!

The appearance of the last two generations of the iPhone, to put it mildly, is boring. Yes, the iPhone 5s looks like a jewel with sharp edges, but for a long time I wanted something new. And we know that the new is the well-forgotten old, which is why the iPhone 6 in the hands so much resembles the first Apple smartphone.

Rounded edges, a solid piece of aluminum and a comfortable fit in the hand. I'm talking now about both models - iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, since they are identical in design, the differences are only in size and in some pieces of iron.

The new iPhone could be a real revelation for me, because I always wanted a real smartphone of the future - a stylish, but no frills plate of aluminum and glass. This would be a novelty if someone in Apple's design department would have twitched Jony Quince when he came up with the design of the antenna module in the iPhone 6. The lines you see on back cover, look mediocre. And on the example of thin and neat stripes on the back cover of the Taiwanese flagship HTC One M8 is even somehow sloppy and it's strange. Nevertheless, one can get used to this feature (disputable, by the way, this is a matter of taste).

After two days of using the iPhone 6 already seems familiar. Eyes already refuse to look at the 4-inch display, hands reach for the thin body and fingers want to run over the glass of the new smartphone again. Its edges are slightly rounded, so that the gadget looks and feels like a solid piece made of correct materials.

The only caveat is that it is slippery, so I recommend thinking about buying a cover in advance. It seems that Apple accessories are just right.

Of the other notable external changes- separate volume control buttons, which are now recessed into the case and are pressed incredibly clearly. Same shape power button moved from the top to the right side. The thumb of the right hand or the index finger of the left lies directly on it. The first few hours, of course, you continue to rummage around the top edge in search of a button, but over time everything falls into place - this is the only place where you can comfortably reach your finger and lock / unlock the device.

Regarding the protruding camera module. He didn't bother me at all. Yes, it is noticeable, but the iPhone lies flat on the table and does not stagger when you press it from one side. Maybe there is still a minimal, almost imperceptible movement, but in the usual scheme of use you do not notice this. I tried to poke the module with my fingernail, but it didn't work.

Screens: Steve was wrong

To be honest, it’s not easy to understand in two days how the batteries in the new Apple smartphones behave. No, not even possible. I can say one thing for sure - my iPhone 5s, which I have been using for about 8 months, during this time held a charge many times worse than both new items that lay side by side. Yes, the battery in the iPhone 5s could “get tired” during this period of operation, but the fact remains that in the evening my smartphone lay down to rest with 0% charge, while the iPhone 6 had 30% left, and Plus, it seems, was ready to work even before lunch the next day. He had about 55% charge left. Worthy.

The numbers you can find on Apple.com speak for themselves. The iPhone 6 can last up to 250 hours in standby mode, while the iPhone 6 Plus will last 384 hours in the locked state. The younger model will be able to show you about five films of medium length, the older one - all seven. The figures are not bad, but not revolutionary. It is simply designed to consume content in huge quantities - you want to watch movies, play action games and arcade games, surf the Internet through Safari or, for example, do video editing through the iMovie application. This is the ultimate gadget for the active user who is on the edge. That is, it is really huge for a phone, but at the same time it is so-and-so convenient during use. In addition, Apple took care of the pioneers and made some changes in iOS 8 that are only available on the iPhone 6 Plus.

First, it's landscape mode, like on the iPad. The desktop, icons, content - everything is in a horizontal position. This feature is activated in Settings -> Display and Brightness -> Appearance. Here we select the normal mode, where by default work is available in a horizontal position.

If you select the "Magnify" mode, all icons and text will become a little larger. It is promising, but we need the support of developers who optimize their software to work in this mode.

Another point is changes in the location of some interface elements in standard applications. For example, in Mail and Messages, dual screen mode is enabled, like on the iPad. This also includes the supposedly improved keyboard, to which the shortcut buttons for the “Copy, Cut, Paste” functions have moved, but they take some serious getting used to. It seems that the system is not finalized. Either the iPhone 6 Plus was released ahead of schedule, or they simply overlooked it.

Unlike other manufacturers of large smartphones, Apple did a good job of making them more convenient. While competitors are introducing complex schemes for controlling large screens into interfaces, Cupertino simply adds one, but useful feature. Double tapping (not pressing) on the Home button lowers the entire interface of any application so that you reach the status bar with one finger. Simple and convenient.

There is also a problem with the display of some applications. No, I didn’t notice any pixels, but the software that looked normal on the screen of the iPhone 5s now looks strange on the 5.5-inch Godzilla. There is a lot of space on the screen, but the interface elements are stretched and look somehow awkward or even clumsy. I think developers are already aware of this nuance and are already revising the interfaces of their programs.

I don't have a single word for you against buying an iPhone 6. Except for the iPhone 6 Plus.

For the first time in the history of the iPhone, we have to choose between two iPhones - a powerful and a second powerful novelty, but with a larger screen. The latter has its own charisma, it attracts with its unusualness and magnificent screen, which in any case will always be with you. It is really very difficult to choose, but I can recommend you something. Do not even expect to come to the store and immediately make a choice there - it's impossible!

Apple has managed to set a really huge number of trends, releasing small and neat devices, but the fashion for large screens eventually got to it. Initially, for some reason, Apple refused to create large smartphones, explaining this behavior by the fact that compactness is very important.

Meanwhile, manufacturers from other companies provided users with devices with large (sometimes even too large) screens, which they really liked. As a result, Apple decided to remove this gap and introduced two models to the market at once: and the iPhone 6 Plus. Judging by the prefix of the second model, it is not difficult to guess that it has additional functionality compared to the regular model.

Before proceeding to the description of the characteristics of the iPhone 6 Plus, we note that the device differs minimally from the iPhone 6: Apple iPhone 6 Plus received additional optical stabilization of the camera, a more capacious battery, became a little thicker and heavier. Well, the most important difference lies in the screen, which has become larger by 0.8 inches (the iPhone 6 has a 4.7 screen, and the Plus model has a 5.5 screen).

The iPhone 6 Plus boasts a 128 GB version, but practice shows that most users have enough with their heads and 64 GB of the device. So, let's move on to the description of the technical characteristics of the device.

Screen - the head of the device

Apple iPhone 6 Plus received an IPS-matrix (maximum measured speed up to 519 cd / m2) with HD resolution 1920x1080, with a dot density of 401 pixels per inch (the younger version has a density per inch of 326 pixels). Viewing angles can be called maximum, but, in any case, they are no worse than modern Super AMOLED displays. Color rendition remains natural even with a strong deviation of the display. In the sun, the picture remains quite readable.

The Apple iPhone 6 Plus has an automatic brightness correction feature. which works really to the point and very quickly. Using the maximum brightness is not recommended, because it will strain your eyes a lot.

In general, there is nothing to complain about the screen, but at the moment there are still problems with the optimization of applications: some of them can stretch the application, “grain” or pixelation may appear. This cannot be considered a disadvantage, because over time, all optimization problems will be eliminated by the developers.

Photo and Video Shooting

As always, Apple is not chasing more pixels. So, the iPhone 6 Plus received an 8 MP camera with a flash that supports a phase focusing system (it is not available on the iPhone 6). This system shows pretty good results, but the LG G3 with its laser focusing is clearly ahead of the "apple". The device can take pictures with a maximum resolution of 3264×2448 pixels.

Actually, it is simply impossible to notice the difference between the cameras of the two flagships from Apple, or it simply does not exist. In any case, we did not notice any difference. The camera interface itself is made in a minimalist style with a minimum number of settings. This is very convenient: you do not have to adjust during shooting - the process of photographing is carried out instantly, while automatically selecting best settings for shooting.

The maximum video resolution is 1920×1080 pixels at 30 or 60 fps. If the shooting resolution is lowered, then it will be possible to achieve a frame rate of 120 or even 240 fps. There is a slow-motion feature that kicks in at 1280x720 pixels, but not higher. At the same time, we noticed a significant deterioration in light sensitivity, but this is natural with such shooting.
The front camera of the iPhone 6 Plus is capable of recording HD video at 30 fps using a 1.2 MP module.

Interfaces

iPhone 6+ supports all common interfaces, including NFC (can only work with Apple Pay). It is worth highlighting Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth with A2DP support and GPS with Glonass support. However, Apple's own maps are not the best, it is recommended to use Google Maps.

Apple assured that the device will be able to function up to 80 hours in this mode, and it really turned out to be true. You can check for yourself if you have already purchased this device. But in games, the battery is melting before our eyes: in about an hour of operation, the average toy “ate” about 25% of the charge, and this cannot but upset.

To summarize, the installed battery is standard for flagship devices and does not stand out in any way. With a light load, the phone will be able to hold out for about a day.

Performance

Finally, we got to the most important characteristics - iron. Apple iPhone 6 runs on a 64-bit A8 processor with a frequency of 1.4 GHz. There is also an M8 motion coprocessor. The PowerVR GX6450 chip is responsible for the video, and the amount of RAM is 1 GB. These characteristics may upset apple lovers a little, because Android flagships already have four- and eight-core processors with a frequency exceeding 2 GHz and 2-3 GB of RAM.

But synthetic tests have shown that everything is very "rosy". So, 3DMark gave the sixth iPhone Plus 17,780 points, GeekBench 3 - 2913, and AnTuTu - 54756. True, AnTuTu only worked at a resolution of 1136 × 640, like the 6th iPhone, which slightly distorts the information received.

Built-in memory

Apple iPhone 6 can be found in three memory sizes - 16, 64 and 128 GB. There is no 32 GB version, don't look for it. The iPhone 6 Plus does not have a memory card slot either, so think about how much memory you may need when buying. And again, as in the case of the iPhone 6, we see that flagship Android devices outperform Apple's product in terms of performance. True, the iPhone 6 Plus is slightly thinner and lighter than both competitors, and it has more maximum internal memory (up to 128 GB!). But, say, in the case of Android, the most profitable volume is just 32 GB, like Note 4, since this is more than enough for programs, and for everything else you can buy a 128 GB microSD card, which will cost 3 thousand 4 rubles.

But - everything will be put in its place by a full-time acquaintance with the iPhone 6 Plus.

Equipment

Like the iPhone 6, the iPhone 6 Plus is sold in a white box, the upper surface of which is completely white, that is, without a picture, but the contours of the smartphone protrude a little (they seem to be squeezed out from the inside).

The set is traditional. Note that the charger here gives out a current of 1 A (5 V), like the iPhone 6 and iPhone 5s, and not 2.1 A, like the iPad mini retina. This means that the iPhone 6 Plus will take significantly longer to charge than other Apple smartphones.

Design

The first emotion when you take the iPhone 6 Plus in your hand: "How big it is!". Very unusual, especially after the tiny (as it turned out now) iPhone 5s. However, compared to the iPhone 6 too. The photo below clearly shows the ratio of the sizes of the two "sixes".

An Apple tablet is difficult to fit in a jeans pocket, and in jeans with shallow pockets, it will bulge. In any case, carrying such a thing in your pockets is not very convenient, and in a holster too. In the hand, the iPhone 6 Plus is quite comfortable, despite its size. Rounded edges, similar to what we saw in the iPhone 6, fit nicely in the palm of your hand. With a standard grip, you can reach the volume buttons with your index finger, but you can’t switch the lock lever without intercepting.

The same goes for the Power and Home buttons. Either you hold the device so that you can reach the "Power" button, or so that you can reach the "Home" button. In general, when using a smartphone regularly, you will have to shift it in your hand. This is a size payment, the iPhone 6 does not have this problem. That is, in terms of using a smartphone as a smartphone, not a tablet, the iPhone 6 is better.

The materials, color, and connector layout of the iPhone 6 Plus are identical to the iPhone 6. So we won't dwell on it, but we note that the presence of only one speaker (for playing music and sounds) is especially upsetting here. Still, one thing is a medium-sized smartphone, and another thing is a tablet phone, which is supposed to be used, among other things, for watching movies.

We note one more detail, which we did not focus on in iPhone review 6. The camera eye is protected by sapphire glass, which should reduce the chance of damage to the lens. Before the announcement of the new iPhones, there were rumors about the possibility of using sapphire glass to protect the screens. But in the end the screens are protected here Gorilla glass, as before, but the camera still received a sapphire crystal.

This is very relevant, because, as in the case of the iPhone 6, the camera eye here protrudes from the body.

Overall, the design of the iPhone 6 Plus is a mixed bag. On the one hand, the tablet phone is thin and quite light for a completely metal device. He looks good, but you can not say that he admires. Like the iPhone 6, the glass on the screen is rounded on the edges, which makes a very pleasant impression. True, the frames around the screen in 6 Plus are still a little wider. And, of course, one-handed use, which Apple was so proud of when talking about previous models, is no longer possible. But, judging by the sales of tablet phones from other manufacturers, this is not such a big drawback for users.

As for the iPhone 6 Plus bending case scandal, here we would say the following. Firstly, with the presence of strength and the absence of mind, almost any object with dimensions like the iPhone 6 Plus can be slightly bent. And if someone put an iPhone 6 Plus in the back pocket of their jeans and sat on it all day, then it is not surprising that the case bent, because aluminum is a rather flexible metal. Much more surprising that the smartphone continued to work after that. In the case of any other device, the theoretical possibility of bending it would not even be news, and the person who would complain about it would be told "the fool himself." But the hype surrounding the release of new iPhones is fertile ground for scandals sucked from the finger. So if you don't want your new iPhone 6 Plus to bend, just don't sit on it and don't bend it on purpose. And don't put light bulbs in your mouth :)

But every cloud has a silver lining: in an attempt to extinguish the scandal that has flared up and show that the accusations are groundless, Apple allowed the Western press into the holy of holies - into the laboratory, where new iPhones are also tested for mechanical deformations. The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, in the center - iPhone 6 Plus, on the right - iPhone 6, then they can be distinguished by size):

The screen on the iPhone 6 Plus is noticeably darker (brightness in photographs is 98 versus 108 for the Nexus 7). Note that the reflection of bright objects in the screen of the iPhone 6 Plus has a pronounced brownish halo more elongated across the screen. This will somewhat disappoint the fair sex, since using the phone screen as a mirror when correcting makeup will no longer be so handy. The ghosting of reflected objects in the iPhone 6 Plus screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the screen layers (more specifically: between the outer glass and the LCD matrix surface) (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of borders (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of strong external illumination, but their repair in case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, no worse than the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much easier, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and with a white field displayed in full screen, the maximum brightness value in the center of the screen was 540 cd / m² (recall that for the iPhone 6 we got 590 cd / m²), the minimum was 4.6 cd / m². The maximum brightness is very high, and given the excellent anti-reflective properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors will be at an excellent level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by light sensor (located above the slot of the front speaker). AT automatic mode as the ambient light conditions change, the brightness of the screen both increases and decreases. If this mode is simply turned on, then in complete darkness the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 4.6 cd / m² (it’s dark, even just reading the text is annoying), in an office lit by artificial light (about 400 lux) it sets to 90-135 cd / m² (suitable), in a very bright environment (corresponding to a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) increases to 500 cd/m² (not the maximum, but sufficient). In the case of medium illumination, the steady-state brightness of the screen is lower or higher, depending on whether the external illumination has previously increased or decreased (that is, there is a pronounced hysteresis). As a result, the auto-brightness function works more or less adequately. Also, after turning on the auto-brightness function, you can move the brightness slider, which will make some adjustments, but, as practice has shown, it’s better not to interfere. At any brightness level, there is virtually no backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker.

Traditionally for the iPhone, a lot of dust particles are found in the filler adhesive layer between the outer glass and the matrix:

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even at large deviations of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen and without inverting shades. For comparison, here are photos in which iPhone screens 6 Plus and Nexus 7 displayed the same images, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to approximately 200 cd / m² (white field in the entire screen), and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K. White field perpendicular to the screens:

Color reproduction is good and colors are saturated on all three screens. Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens, and the contrast remained at a high level. And the white box:

The brightness at an angle at the screens decreased (at least 4 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of the iPhone 6 Plus, the brightness drop is less. The black field, when deviated diagonally, is lightened weakly and acquires a purple hue. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is approximately the same!):

Note that the black brightness of the Nexus 7 in these two photos is still lower. When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field is excellent:

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) for a screen on an IPS matrix is very high - about 1160:1 (although lower than the declared "standard" of 1300:1). The response time for the black-white-black transition is 20 ms (10 ms on + 10 ms off). The transition between grayscale 25% and 75% (according to the numerical value of the color) and back in total takes 31 ms. The gamma curve constructed from 32 points with an equal interval according to the numerical value of the shade of gray did not reveal a blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.18, which is almost equal to the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates minimally from the exponential dependence:

Of course, there is no dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness in accordance with the nature of the displayed image.

From a practical point of view, the color gamut is equal to sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components to each other:

As a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is very good, since the color temperature is not much higher than the standard 6500 K. The deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered acceptable for a consumer device. At the same time, ΔE and color temperature change little from hue to hue, which has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance does not matter much there, and the measurement error of color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

Let's summarize. The screen has a very high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without problems even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. It is permissible to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works more or less adequately. The advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, the absence of flicker and air gap in the layers of the screen, excellent black field uniformity, high black stability to deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen plane, an ideal gamma curve, high contrast, sRGB color gamut and good color balance . In general, the screen quality is very, very high.

iPhone 6 Plus has two cameras, similar in resolution to those of the iPhone 6, 5, and 5s. The only difference between the rear camera of the iPhone 6 Plus and the iPhone 6 is optical stabilization. We tested the rear iPhone camera 6 Plus and found out how effective optical stabilization is.

	The foliage is worked out well, and in the shadows you can see some remnants of noise.
	Sharpening on wires and strong noise in the shadows - everything is like the iPhone 6.
	In the upper part of the frame and in the background, the foliage worked out so-so, but the sharpness is generally good.
	Foliage merges slightly towards the left edge.
	It seems that the camera works out the shadows a little better than the 6th model, although the difference is quite within the margin of error.
	In this case, the camera copes well with noise, but worse with the sky.
	However, there are no significant differences from 6.
	Good sharpness almost across the entire field of the frame.
	And again, a picture in which the rough work of the noise reduction is perfectly visible.
	The camera does a good job with macro photography.

The main question that, perhaps, many people ask is how the 6 Plus camera differs from the 6. We will try to answer it.

The main and only difference, according to the manufacturer, is optical stabilization. Indeed, from the outside, the 6 Plus camera module seems larger than that of the 6, but it’s hard to believe that a mechanical stabilizer could be “crammed” into such dimensions, although everything is possible. The work of the stabilizer has its side effects, which, however, are quite obvious. It seems that the camera 6, unlike the 6 Plus, works much more stable than usual and the iPhone camera stood out. When shooting on a tripod, the 6 Plus often blurs when focusing. But when shooting with shaky hands, the 6 Plus camera hits more often and makes fewer mistakes with focus. All this can be attributed to the work of the stabilizer, although it is difficult to say for sure whether it is there, since there is no significant difference in the pictures. But the fact is that when shooting from a tripod, 6 Plus often makes mistakes with focus, and when shooting hand-held, 6. As for getting a sharper image when shaking, here, too, it cannot be unequivocally said that 6 Plus does a better job.

No matter how they convince us of the novelty of the camera, it is hard to believe in it. By eye, the camera modules are the same not only in 6 Plus and 6, but also in iPhone 5s, 5c and 5. We don’t have the last two before our eyes, but we can easily evaluate the rest from the schedule.

It's funny that the only noticeable change in EXIF shots is the focal length, which is now 29mm equivalent. But the iPhone 5s had 30mm, right? The fact of the matter is that it was, but with the OS update it also became 29 mm. This once again allows us to state that it is not the camera that has changed, but the firmware, which, at the same time, also does not show radical improvements.

	Lighting ≈130 lux. Noises appear, and with them noise reduction, and the details begin to blur. But the grain from the noise reduction is still not visible.

Cameras 6 and 6 Plus are almost on a par, although in poor lighting 6 Plus allows itself to set a slower shutter speed (perhaps due to the presence of a stabilizer), and a lower ISO, which, however, does not help it at all.

We will not analyze in detail the advantages and disadvantages of the camera, since we have already done this in a previous article.

Well, we still have the same excellent camera, which can no longer be called outstanding. On the other hand, it is really good, and many do not need it better. It handles a lot of tasks well, and it's a great option as a smartphone camera. Improvements, if any, are barely noticeable, and you need to look at the pictures for a very long time to understand what they are. The rest of the manufacturers have long been fighting to squeeze compact cameras out of the market, and Apple has been quietly on the sidelines in this matter for the third year. Does a smartphone need more? Everyone decides for himself.

It is worth noting one oddity of the camera, which may be of interest to some. The fact is that the camera, apparently, takes information about the orientation of the smartphone in space not from the accelerometer (which, in particular, rotates the on-screen interface), but from some other sensor that only reports that the camera is in the wrong orientation. And the correct orientation, as it turns out, the camera has only one - the horizontal location of the smartphone with the button to the right. As a result, the camera sometimes writes strange data about the “correct” orientation of the image in EXIF, and viewers that take this into account flip the image 90 or 180 degrees. Our readers encountered this when they tried to look at the pictures in the previous article. So if you're left-handed and like to have the shutter button under your left hand, keep that in mind, especially when shooting video.

The easiest way to evaluate stabilization is by video shooting, especially with a three-fold zoom. Zoom, by the way, the camera works so-so, which is to be expected - of course, it is digital. And the very quality of the video in cloudy weather leaves much to be desired. But back to stabilization. In order to evaluate the work of the stabilizer, we shot a video on both smartphones, tightly attaching one to the other, so both were on an equal footing. And what did we see?

After a couple of revisions of these videos, you completely cease to understand which smartphone shot which of them, because they are absolutely the same. Even if there is an “optical” stabilizer in the 6 Plus camera, its work is not visible.

Anticipating the “holivar” in the comments, we note that some other resources will certainly note the obvious improvement in the camera and will definitely bring blurry pictures from 6 and clear ones from 6 Plus, as well as pictures with good and bad noise reduction.
