Minuses:

  • Performance will be fine;
  • Overly bulky;

Samsung Galaxy The Tab A 10.1 is a decent tablet when you're trying to find a device under $300.

Just keep in mind that there are two varieties of this tablet. The original Tab A 10.1 has 2 GB random access memory, is often sold complete with a 32 GB MicroSD memory card and is widely available for less than 12,000 rubles. Some time later, Samsung introduced new version a tablet that comes with an S-Pen stylus and a pressure-sensitive screen, equipped with 3 GB of RAM for $300 (18,000 rubles).

SamsungGalaxyTab 10.1: Design and assembly

Samsung Galaxy Tab The A 10.1 has moderately sized bezels, so the body isn't much larger." mailbox" The exact size depends on the version. The original model measures 254 x 155 x 8.1, while the S-Pen version is slightly smaller at 246.4 x 165.1 x 8.1 and weighs 544 grams.

This tablet is heavier than competing devices with similar screen sizes, and it's also thicker than the truly ideal size, but some of that thickness can be attributed to the battery. More on this later.

Mid-range models don't count on design awards. However, its white or black plastic body with silver accents will easily blend in with the crowd in any office or classroom, and the tablet is not going to catch admiring glances.

On the other hand, Samsung builds quality products, and the 10-inch tablet is no exception. And bye appearance Characterized by plastic, the device easily resists deformation or deflection.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1: Display

Tab A 10.1 is equipped with a 10.1-inch touch screen 1920 x 1200 pixels, which gives us 224 pixels per inch. Even the much more expensive one offers only a slightly higher density of 264 pixels per inch.

The screen has a 16:10 aspect ratio, so it's longer and thinner than the 4:3 aspect ratio tablets that are more common these days. This ratio makes it ideal for watching videos, browsing the web, or word processing, but its aspect ratio is a little less suitable for people who prefer to use their tablets in portrait mode.

SamsungGalaxyTabA 10.1: Ports, buttons, speakers and cameras

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 has a MicroSD slot, and the original version is sometimes sold with 32 gigabytes of memory card. Of course, higher capacity memory cards are available, making it easy to upgrade your tablet's capacity for those who want to carry more music or videos with them. The slot is protected by a small cover so you won't lose your memory card.

The MicroUSB v2.0 ports are located on the top edge of the tablet, allowing you to charge the tablet by running the cable across the top of the desk - a very useful layout. The same port can be used to connect accessories such as an external keyboard, although most require an adapter to convert to a full-size one USB Type-A. We tested the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 in our review using a mouse, keyboard, and a flash drive, and each device performed as expected. We then connected the whole thing to a USB hub and connected the tablet to it, the accessories still functioning simultaneously, meaning this tablet can be used as a desktop PC - albeit a simple one.

Unlike most other Android tablets, the Galaxy Tab A has a physical Home button, along with Back and Apps buttons. This means that they are always available to you and do not take up useful screen real estate, but the Back button is located where you can easily touch it accidentally, especially in landscape mode of the tablet.

On the back, you'll find an 8-megapixel camera with flash; the latter option, which is rarely found on tablets. The camera captures images well, but is quite slow, so it's best if the objects in focus remain stationary. The flash is bright, but it's so white that it washes out light colors. 2 megapixel front-camera makes video conferencing available.

The stereo speakers on this model are located on one of the short edges and offer more than enough sound for watching TV shows and movies from a distance of one meter, even in moderately noisy environments.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1: StylusS Pen

Users who plan to do handwritten notes on the Tab A 10.1, should invest in a more expensive version of the tablet that comes with an S-Pen. However, if you don't need this feature, it's worth saving up and buying the original Galaxy Tab A 10.1. Just keep in mind that the difference isn't limited to the stylus; the cheap version doesn't offer a screen capable of supporting a touch stylus. It also has less RAM. So don't expect it to work with your old smartphone's stylus or S-Pen.

The Galaxy Tab A 10.1 S-Pen model has a slot for storing the stylus directly in the tablet body.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1: Performance

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow and uses an octa-core Exynos 7870 clocked at 1.6 GHz. This is a chip designed for light to medium workloads, and the benchmark results back it up.

Our Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (original model) scored 3241 points in Geekbench 4 CPU testing. Compare the results with , released several years ago and scoring 2620 points on the same test. On the other hand, the company's flagship phones perform much better. Samsung Galaxy S7, for example, achieved 5213 points.

This doesn't mean the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 remains sluggish in everyday use. It loads Android OS after complete shutdown in just 20 seconds. But this tablet will not be able to run several heavy applications at the same time.

The original version in our review has 2GB of RAM, while the more expensive S-Pen tablet has 3GB of RAM. Regardless of the model, you get 16 GB of internal memory, a slot for MicroSD cards Supports up to 256 GB of additional memory.

SamsungGalaxyTabA 10.1: Battery

The built-in battery has a capacity of 7300 mAh, which, according to Samsung, will last 13 hours of video playback or Internet browsing. We sent the tablets to a torture test, in which a review Samsung model Galaxy Tab A 10.1 reproduced streaming video via Wi-Fi with display brightness set to maximum, where the tablet lasted 7 hours 28 minutes. This is an indicator of how long you can count on the tablet in the worst case scenario, in a traditional everyday use you can expect more. More than 7 hours is a good result, indicating that the tablet should last a day of moderate to heavy use or even two days of light use.

Samsung's Exynos 7870 processor has been designed to improve battery life by providing four processor cores for heavy workloads and four processor cores for light-duty workloads. Less RAM also allows for longer battery life.

Verdict:

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 is a decent tablet in its price range, while there are better options for the extra money.

Despite the decline of the Android tablet market, which has been going on for several years now, you can still find new products coming out from under the wings of large eminent manufacturers. Together with dear flagship tablet, the company showed more affordable solution-, which costs at least half as much as the top-end S4. How good will you feel after taking this pill? Now we'll find out!

The tablet exists in two versions - Wi-Fi (SM-T590) or LTE (SM-T595). The cost of the LTE version (as in my test) in Ukraine is 13,999 hryvnia (or $495), and the Wi-Fi version will cost 10,999 hryvnia ($389).

The difference between these two options is only the presence of a SIM card slot in the more expensive model and therefore support for 3G/4G with the ability to make calls or connect to the Internet. Well, they also differ slightly in weight - the LTE version is 5 grams heavier.

Design, materials and assembly

The tablet looks very standard. There are no identifying inscriptions, manufacturer's logo or control buttons on the front panel. The bezels on the sides of the screen are thinner than those at the top and bottom - but this is already standard practice.

The back panel is made of plastic and covered with a matte soft-touch coating that is pleasant to the touch. And this decision is also not new. But in any case, it is much more practical than glass, for example.

It is possible to leave traces of use on the case, but this is not an easy task. In addition, they are easy to wipe off.

The device was assembled well, I did not find any play during operation.

In addition to black, the tablet comes in gray and blue colors. But in Ukraine the gadget is blue this moment not available.

Layout of elements

The front of the screen is covered with glass with a good oleophobic coating. On the front panel you can see only two windows: the first with the light sensor, and the second with the front camera module.

The end on the right houses the power button and a paired volume key. Under them you can find a microphone and even lower - a slot for a nano-format SIM card and a microSD memory card. Let me remind you that a SIM can only be inserted into the version with LTE; in the Wi-Fi modification there is no slot for it.

On the left side in the middle there are four magnetic contacts for connecting the POGO charging dock. It is not clear whether it is possible to connect a cover keyboard to the tablet, like the one with, since on the manufacturer’s official website I found only a mention of a docking station. On the sides of the contacts there are additional grooves for more secure fixation of the tablet in the aforementioned dock.

At the bottom end there are USB port Type-C - thanks for it, we didn’t save money, as well as eight holes on each side, behind which the speakers are located.

The top end has the same holes with speakers, which means that the Galaxy Tab A 10.5 has four speakers in total. In addition to them, there is another microphone and a 3.5 mm audio jack on the edge.

On the back panel there is a block with the main camera protruding from the body, an LED flash and an embossed Samsung logo.

Ergonomics

I don’t even know if it’s worth describing the “convenience” of using a 10-inch tablet, but I’ll try. In a vertical orientation, you can hold the tablet even with one hand. Despite the thickness of the frames, there were no false touches during the testing period. And in a horizontal position, even more so, the grip is even more comfortable due to the wider margins.

The only thing that can go wrong is that you can cover part of the speakers with your hands when the tablet is in your hands in landscape orientation. But fortunately there are four of them, and therefore the volume will remain at a good level in any case.

Also, in theory, due to the protruding camera block, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.5 may wobble when you press the screen if the tablet is on a hard, flat surface at that time. But in practice, for this to happen, you need to press the screen with force, which is unlikely to be done by anyone.

In general, I did not notice any obvious problems with ergonomics when using the tablet.

Display Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.5

The tablet is equipped with a 10.5″ diagonal display - this is clear from the name. The matrix is made using TFT technology and has a resolution of 1920×1200 with a pixel density of 216 ppi. The screen aspect ratio is 16:10.

The matrix is of high quality, with all that it implies: the screen is bright, with rich colors and a good level of contrast. The viewing angles are maximum, the picture is not distorted with linear or diagonal deviations. You cannot correct the color temperature or change the display mode.

Although the low amount of PPI at this diagonal can be noticeable if you look closely, for example, at the text. Well, in general, the screen can be called excellent.

The tablet has automatic brightness adjustment - it works fine. Among other additional functions, there is only a blue filter to reduce eye strain, but it is also activated from the curtain with switches - it is impossible to adjust its level.

Performance

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.5 runs on Qualcomm system Snapdragon 450 paired with Adreno 506 video chip. Other characteristics are as follows: 14nm process technology, 8 Cortex-A53 cores, maximum clock frequency up to 1.8 GHz.

At first glance it may seem like a simple chip. basic level four hundredth series, but in terms of technical parameters, the processor is very similar to the Snapdragon 625. At a minimum, they have the same graphics accelerator.

In synthetics, the results are not very impressive.

The Galaxy Tab A 10.5 has 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, of which 23.41 GB are allocated for user needs. It can be expanded by installing a microSD memory card up to 400 GB. Without a restart, a dozen applications can be stored in RAM.

The tablet performs well in the system and applications. It works smoothly, all animations are displayed without delays or jerks.

The situation with games is not so rosy, and in order to play with a comfortable FPS, you will have to select low or medium graphics settings. In PUBG Mobile, you can select “Smooth” or “Balance”. With them, the game runs normally, without drawdowns. WoT Blitz with medium settings - it is consistently displayed at 50-60 frames per second, you can even play with the maximum, but less smoothly - 20-45 fps.

In short, the performance here is average, but quite comfortable and will be enough for most tasks. Moreover, if you remember that the tablet is not positioned as the ultimate gaming solution, but a simple family multimedia device.

Cameras

The tablet has a main camera module with a resolution of 8 megapixels and even a good aperture - f/1.9.

The end result is pretty good for a tablet. Photos taken under artificial light are, of course, of average quality. But with good daylight The situation is already better, but still nothing special. Again, in this class of devices you shouldn’t expect a different situation; although the camera here is not for show, as is often the case in inexpensive tablets, you are unlikely to shoot everything with it, and not least because of the shape -factor Video can be recorded with the main camera in Full HD resolution.

Front camera - 5 MP module with f/2.2 aperture. It is not particularly high quality, but it has the “Selfie Focus” function, which programmatically blurs the background.

And since we already remembered about shooting modes, the main one has a lot different modes eg: HDR, night, panorama, professional ( manual mode), burst shooting, stickers and so on.

All in all, Samsung camera Galaxy Tab A 10.5 can be easily used if you don't have a smartphone at hand.

Unlocking with face recognition

The tablet did not have a fingerprint scanner installed, but replaced it with facial recognition unlocking. But at this stage, most likely due to the specific software of the test sample, it works so-so. In good ambient light, it doesn't work very quickly, but you can use it. The problem is different - after a couple of hours the tablet refuses to use this method in principle and advises you to reboot. After the reboot it continues to work as usual, but again not for long.

In general, if commercial samples do not have the problem described earlier, then you can use this method without entering the password manually - doing this on a tablet is really inconvenient.

Autonomy

Galaxy Tab A 10.5 is equipped with a large 7300 mAh battery, the charge of which is enough for really for a long time. I don’t use such devices very intensively, so in 14 days I charged it maybe 3 times. At the same time, I was not limited to performing any tasks at all - I watched videos, listened to music, sometimes launched games and after almost 4 days from the last charge , the screen activity indicator was 7 hours 48 minutes.

A “dry” test in PC Mark with maximum screen brightness showed almost 7 hours of operation for the Tab A 10.5.

Plus, a program for test samples constantly using the GPS module was running in the background, which means the commercial sample should demonstrate even better results. I managed to fully charge the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.5 from a non-native charger in 3 hours.

Sound and communications

As I already said, the Galaxy Tab A 10.5 has 4 speakers - this is a significant plus.

Firstly, the sound cannot be muted randomly, and secondly, these speakers produce good surround and moderately loud sound. It can also be corrected using built-in tools.

In the default headphones, the sound is not bad, but somehow... flat, perhaps. So I immediately went to the settings and there was a fairly solid set of various parameters: several Dolby Atmos effects, an advanced equalizer and several more switches. After a primitive setup, as often happens, the sound became more interesting.

WITH wireless modules I didn't notice any problems. Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac works great, there is support for 5 GHz. The rest is a typical set: Bluetooth 4.2 (A2DP, LE) and GPS (A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS). I’ll say it again, I’m testing a tablet with LTE - so you can put a SIM card in it and use the mobile Internet. Well, or receiving calls and typing SMS is not a good idea, in fact, but it’s possible! If you don't need these features, you can save a lot and take the standard version with Wi-Fi only.

Firmware and software

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.5 comes with Android 8.1 Oreo OS on top branded shell Samsung Experience version 9.5.

We have already talked about the firmware several times in other reviews. Samsung devices, therefore I separately focus attention only on key features, well, you can look at the rest in the screenshots or in other reviews - I didn’t see much of a difference in the firmware for a smartphone and a tablet.

For example, in a tablet you cannot change the theme, but there is a children's mode - a useful thing with separate applications, decorated in the appropriate style. Additional educational and development programs can be found in Galaxy Apps.

I will also note the Daily Board function - a kind of smart display. The mode is activated when the tablet is placed in the POGO dock or connected charger. After this, the selected photos, clock, weather and date are displayed on the screen.

conclusions

It has a high-quality 10-inch display, good stereo sound and reliable, stable software. On the other hand, for this money I still wanted to get more productive hardware. But if you remember about last year’s processor installed in the fresh Tab S4 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 835), then what can you expect from an average device that costs half as much?

Therefore, if we consider this device specifically as a multimedia tablet on which you can perform various tasks with the whole family, then it is a good option.

I have been “using” this tablet, so to speak, for a month now and now I will try to describe all my impressions of using it. The thing is that closer to summer I had a need to find a worthy replacement for my budget 7-inch old LG G Pad 7.0 v400. I tried to look for more or less tablets in the mid-price segment (that is, not budget ones) with a large screen or more better performance and smooth operation. Basically, I was thinking in the direction of tablets from Samsung (since I’ve been dealing with the 2013 flagship Galaxy S4 for more than two years and, in principle, I’m happy with everything, and, moreover, I know that with the latest tablets Samsung users also don’t have any particularly critical complaints), and, moreover, among other manufacturers I couldn’t find anything worthwhile for myself. There was a variant from the series released in 2015, namely the Tab A (8.0 or 9.7 inches). Everything is good, but their screen resolution is “very not very good” (especially on 9.7 inches - 1024x768, you see, it’s not enough). And then, quite by accident, I saw a brand new tablet from 2016, Samsung Galaxy Tab A(6) 10.1", looked at its characteristics, the first reviews of it and reviews about it, and, in principle, I really liked everything. I couldn’t “use” it in the store, since it was on order, so I took a chance and ordered it for myself (in blue). Arrived quite quickly, in 9 days, thanks for this M-Video. And I want to say that this tablet more than met all my expectations. The first tactile contact with this tablet was very pleasant, although the body is completely plastic, it is made very well. The screen quality, traditionally for Samsung, is excellent, especially the Full HD resolution (1920x1080), which is very good. I was also pleased with Android 6.0 on board and the TouchWiz interface on top of it - the smoothness of operation is simply excellent, during the entire time of use I did not notice a single slightest stutter (by the way, I still don’t understand those people who “hate” Samsung for its “lagging interface” - understand , TouchWiz has long changed for the better, it no longer has +100500 unnecessary programs and minute-long sticking when entering the “application menu” - although I also greatly exaggerated this about the “old” touchwiz). Moreover, I am very pleased with the already built-in set of office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and a gift from Samsung in the form of 100GB for 2 years in OneDrive. There are no complaints about the sound either - two high-quality speakers at the end of the tablet, producing a fairly loud and clear sound. The overall performance did not let us down - smooth operation in everyday applications and in not particularly resource-intensive games is ensured by 100%; I have not particularly tried heavier games. The camera is simply superb, 8MP + autofocus, and even a flash - photos and videos turn out simply excellent (by the standards of tablets, which have not been customary to install super cool cameras on for a long time)! The battery is 7+ thousand mAh, with my average use it lasts for 3-5 days, which is not bad at all. As an addition, we can’t help but rejoice at the slot for nano-SIM (support for calls via speakerphone or through headphones and mobile internet) and a separate slot for micro-SD. As for the minuses, I can note the inconvenience of standard navigation keys from Samsung (mechanical “Home” and two touch ones “Back” and “Application Manager”) - firstly, since I often use the tablet in landscape orientation, the location of these keys in portrait orientation is not is always convenient (however, this is not critical), and secondly, the touch keys, unfortunately, are not backlit. Also, the prices for official accessories, namely the case from Samsung, are not encouraging). I ordered an unofficial case on Aliexpress at a cheaper price, it came with a film and a stylus as a gift (thanks to the Chinese for that). Look like that's it! Overall, the tablet is truly a powerful workhorse, which is also perfectly suitable for entertainment - watching movies, surfing the web and playing games!
