Conclusions of the article

The free STDU Viewer program is small in size and is used as a file viewer for e-book, document and image formats. The STDU Viewer program can replace several specialized programs for viewing files of the corresponding formats.

Hello dear readers of the site.
Today I want to introduce you to an interesting utility for reading electronic publications STDU Viewer. Why amusing? and look at this incomplete list of its capabilities, which the site kindly prepared for us - ru. wikipedia.org:
STDU Viewer - small-sized viewer PDF, DjVu, Comic Book Archive (CBR or CBZ), FB2, ePub, XPS, TCR, multi-page TIFF, TXT, PalmDoc, EMF, WMF, BMP, GIF, JPG, JPEG, PNG, PSD, PCX, DCX, MOBI, AZW for Microsoft Windows , free for non-commercial use.

By the way, why did I pay attention to this program? Once, having downloaded an electronic publication using HTML layout, I needed to somehow open it, that is, read it. But the book was in
format FB2, and I didn’t have such a “bottle opener” at that time. And so the Internet, I “pumped up” a bunch of programs and began to try. The language of these utilities was naturally English, and although there were no particular difficulties with the installation, the books were not readable. The programs downloaded from file hosting sites turned out to be “broken” and completely refused to work. Then I began to take a different approach to writing a request in the browser, and it goes like this: Download the program for opening FB 2 from the software manufacturer’s website. And that’s it, now if I need a utility or program, I do it this way and I advise you to do the same.
Manufacturers' websites always have several options for their software, including FREE, less often TRIAL. After installation, the program is installed in the OS and when you need to read something, there is no need to open it specifically, everything happens automatically. Plus a convenient interface for reading by turning pages, navigation buttons are located at the bottom of the page, look at the one specially made for this

Its interface is Russian thanks to our fellow countryman from Nizhny Novgorod, who created it, or so to speak, combining the best of all into one whole.

Advantages over others

For me personally, this convenience is not only that it works in the background, but also takes up little space and, most importantly, no problems with the registry. Now many programs are very sophisticated and have their own
the weight interferes with our work, slowing down our hardware. Take, for example, the native Adobe Rader, it weighs a hundred megabytes, takes a very long time to install, every time asking for an update eats up traffic, and in the end
installation sign flies out, that the update failed, come back tomorrow.

And perhaps they even tried to open their documents to them.

It became clear that the default settings do not suit you in everything. This means it’s time to start customizing the program for yourself.

All STDU Viewer settings are stored in xml file, however, it is unlikely that anyone has the desire to take an xml editor and start manually changing this file.

Therefore, in the main menu, select the item "File" and in the submenu that opens the item "Program settings...".

A window like this will appear on the screen

Since this window contains all possible program settings, let’s look at it in more detail.

The window is divided into two parts; on the left there is a tree, which contains groups of settings united by a common concept. If you select one of the tree branches, a set of controls will appear on the right that allow you to change program parameters assigned to the group corresponding to this tree branch.

General settings

The most basic settings collected in a branch "Are common". Let's look one by one at what parameters we can change by selecting this group of settings.

Program interface language

In the right half of the window is the most top element controls is a drop-down list in which you can select the language of the program interface. As standard, the program comes with three pre-installed language sets: "Russian", "English" and "French". However, there are additional files, submitted by users who translated the program into their native languages (Belarusian, Ukrainian, Spanish, etc.)
So, if you decide to change the interface language, select the one you need in the drop-down list and click the button "OK". You will need to restart the application for the language change to take effect.

Associated file types

The viewer is good because it supports a large number of different file formats. It is unlikely that there are any other programs that can work with such a wide range of documents. Next setting will help you choose which files with extensions you want to be automatically opened in our program, and which ones you leave to be opened by other applications.

In a group of elements with the name "Associated file types" check the extensions that you want to associate with the viewer and clear the checkboxes; for those types of files that you are going to open with other programs, for example, for working with text files (".txt" extensions) it is more logical to use "Notebook", since we most often open them to edit. However, reading text files (for example, some books are still presented only in this form) is much more convenient in our program.

The last checkbox in this group "Use one icon for all file types". Let's figure out what he is responsible for.

When you work with files in Explorer or some other file manager, then each file is displayed with a thumbnail corresponding to its type (for example, documents on the desktop). Which thumbnail to use is determined by the settings of this type file in operating system. If you check the box "Use one icon...", then all documents associated with the viewer will have the same mini-image (this is a plus, from the point of view that most often it is not so important what specific format the document is in, what is important is that it will be opened by our wonderful program), if the checkbox reset, then each type of document will have its own mini-image, this will allow you to quickly distinguish books in pdf format from books to mobi, etc.

List of recently opened files

If you have already opened documents, take a look at "File" main menu, or click on the arrow next to the button "Open" in the toolbar, and you will see a list of the files you opened most recently. This is very convenient if you often access the same documents, because you don’t have to go through several windows each time and look for a file on the disk; you just need to select the item corresponding to this document in the menu.

Option "Remember the list of..." gives you the ability to configure how many files the viewer should remember and then show in the menu.

Tabs

The viewer has a modern multi-document interface with tabs, the same as, for example, and many other programs whose operation requires the simultaneous opening of a large number of documents. For each open file, a tab is created in the program window, which, if there are several open files, facilitates access to a specific document.

In the group of settings we are considering now, there are several related to working with tabs. Let's look at each option in more detail.

If only one document is open, then a panel with a single tab is completely useless, and rather even harmful, because it takes up space on the screen and reduces the document display area. To prevent the tab from being displayed in this case, you can check the box "Don't show tabs if only one document is open"

The following flag allows you to determine whether the tab bar should be placed at the top or bottom of the open document. By default, the panel is on top, if you want to change this situation, check the box "Show tabs below".

The last checkbox is self-explanatory; with it you can determine whether you want the document to be closed when you double-click the left mouse button on a document tab.

Checking for new versions

The developers are trying to constantly improve the STDU Viewer program, add functionality and support for new formats. In order not to miss the release of new versions, you can set up automatic scanning by selecting the period of time between scans in the drop-down list.

I would like to note that the program does not transmit any information externally, but only downloads the number from the developer’s website latest version viewer.

Advanced settings

In Group "Are common" viewer settings, there is a subgroup "Advanced". Let's figure out why the options from this subgroup are needed.

Let's say you were studying some document, and suddenly the work day ended, you closed the program and went home. When you come the next morning and open that same document, you will find that the viewer has carefully restored it for you in the form in which it was displayed before you closed it. You can continue reading from the same page, same zoom, etc.

The question arises: if a document is opened for the first time, what settings should be applied to it? With the page, everything is not difficult, books are usually read from the beginning, which means that when opening we display the first page of the document. But what about the scale and viewing mode. This subgroup is intended to give you the opportunity to choose these settings yourself.

Scale of the document opened for the first time

Some people want the entire first page to be visible when opening (scale - fit to page), and for others, so that the document pages fit the width of the screen. You can determine what scale the viewer should set.

This setting only affects documents that you have not yet opened. If you open a document that you have already worked with, then the scale that you set for of this document before it closes.

View mode for a document opened for the first time

Likewise previous point, for a document that is being opened for the first time, you can determine not only the scale, but also the viewing mode. For example, if you have a widescreen monitor, it may be more convenient for you to have the document displayed U-turns, i.e. two pages at a time.

This setting also only applies to documents that you have not yet opened. If you open a document that you have already worked with, the viewing mode that you set for this document before closing it will be restored.

To be continued...

It is said to be one of the cool book reading software. But the main thing is that it does not require installation. It is no secret that we often read books at work, where the employer is trying with all his might to limit our freedom, including the freedom to install the programs we need on our work computer. Therefore, we are trying to get out of the situation using our own methods, such as, for example, using software that does not require blatant intervention))) in the established order of system restrictions.

Besides, what, for example, would you order to do, Dear employer, when you need to familiarize yourself with something related to your professional activity?

So, what can this STDU Viewer do? First of all, it allows us to read books in FB2, PDF, DJVU formats. Further, it allows you to view multiple documents simultaneously, while creating tabs. It has tools for adjusting brightness and contrast, and can display page thumbnails. Allows you to work with fonts. It has a built-in search, bookmark system and a button for printing pages. There is a function to connect a converter to PDF format.
