It is clear that there is simply no clear definition of a gaming laptop, just as there are no criteria based on which one could conclude whether a particular laptop is gaming. So, today, according to Nvidia, any laptop with a GeForce GTX video card (700 and 800 series) can be considered a gaming laptop. The definition, of course, is ambiguous and at least does not take into account the existence of AMD notebook solutions, but we emphasize once again that this is Nvidia's vision.

Well, since mobile video cards of the GeForce GTX 800M series are intended for the gaming segment of laptops, let's take a closer look at how they radically differ from the previous GeForce GTX 700M series. First of all, if we compare these two lines as a whole, the GeForce GTX 800M graphics cards are on average 30% faster. The top-end GeForce GTX 880M, GTX 870M, and GTX 860M GPUs are based on the same Kepler architecture as the previous generation of processors, and therefore, of course, one could not expect a radical change in performance. And it seems that Nvidia, in this case, did not rely on performance growth, but on new technologies that are supported by mobile graphics solutions of the GeForce GTX 800M series. These are GeForce Battery Boost, Shadowplay and Gamestreaming technologies.

Let's start with GeForce Battery Boost technology: it is designed to increase the time battery life laptop in game mode. Recall that before the advent of mobile video cards GeForce GTX 800M, an attempt to play on a laptop in offline with the default settings caused the switch to the processor graphics, and it was almost impossible to play. In principle, it was possible to disable switching to the processor GPU in offline mode in the video card driver, but in this case, it is rare that a gaming laptop could work on battery power in game mode for more than 1 hour due to the very high power consumption of a discrete graphics card.

GeForce Battery Boost technology allows you to just reduce the power consumption of a discrete graphics card of the GeForce GTX 800M series by limiting FPS. However, if a powerful GeForce GTX 800M series graphics card is installed in the laptop, then the FPS value in the game can be significantly higher. In this situation, it seems logical to reduce the performance of the GPU, reducing its frequency and power consumption, as long as the game maintains an acceptable FPS. By default, the maximum FPS value, under which the power of the video accelerator will be limited, is 30 FPS, but this value can be changed in the settings.

The maximum FPS value is limited by manipulating the frequency of the GPU, video memory, and even the CPU, but this technology is configured in the video card driver.

Naturally, the GeForce Battery Boost technology only works when the stationary power is turned off and only if it is activated in the video driver. If the laptop is connected to a stationary power supply, then there is no limit to the maximum FPS value - the overspending of electricity is obviously not worth the possible subsidence in games.

The next technology implemented in GeForce GTX 800M mobile video cards is Shadowplay. Actually, this technology is not new anymore: it was introduced by Nvidia about a year ago. However, until now it has been implemented only for desktop video cards and only now it has become available in mobile video cards of the GeForce GTX 800M series.

This technology is already focused on avid gamers who not only play, but also upload videos of their games to the Internet. Until recently, playing and recording gameplay at the same time was quite problematic. To do this, it was necessary to install third-party utilities such as FRAPS and manage them during the game. In addition, these third-party utilities reduced overall performance when recording gameplay. Shadowplay technology allows you to automatically record gameplay without reducing system performance in the game. Capturing video, encoding and uploading it to the network is carried out by means of GPU, without reducing the FPS in the game itself.

Well, the last new technology implemented in GeForce GTX 800M video cards is Gamestreaming. Again, for desktop systems this technology has been available for more than a year, but in gaming laptops it appears only with the use of GeForce GTX 800M graphics cards. To date, MSI gaming laptops are available in four series: GP, GE, GS and GT. Each of these series has its own marketing name: for example, the GP (younger series of gaming laptops) is called Leopard, the GE series is Apache, the GS series is Stealth and Ghost, and the top GT series is Dominator.

Each series of MSI gaming notebooks includes 15.6-inch (GP60, GE60, GS60 and GT60) and 17.3-inch (GP70, GE70, GS70 and GT70) models.

As already noted, the most important innovation in the updated line of MSI gaming laptops is the new graphics. In the junior series GP is installed Nvidia graphics card GeForce 840M, and in all others you can choose one of two video cards. So, in the GE series, a GeForce GTX 850M or GeForce GTX 860M can be installed, in the GS series - GeForce GTX 860M or GeForce GTX 870M, and in the GT series - GeForce GTX 870M or GeForce GTX 880M. You can determine which video card is installed in a particular laptop by its marketing name. If Pro is added to the name (for example, Dominator Pro or Stealth Pro), then this means that the older of the two possible video cards is installed in the laptop. For example, if the laptop is called Dominator Pro, then this means that it has a GeForce GTX 880M graphics card installed, and if the laptop is simply called Dominator, then it has a GeForce GTX 870M graphics card installed.

The new graphics are one of the main, but still not the only innovations in the gaming series of MSI notebooks. Has undergone a change and design models. The meaning of this technology lies in the redistribution of heat between the zone of the central processor and the video card. Actually, there is nothing special in this technology - a similar approach is used in many laptops.

Perhaps the most interesting new feature of MSI gaming laptops is the SteelSeries Engine. We are talking about a special utility that allows you to program almost every key of a gaming laptop.
