The viewing area (picture below) is the main area in the STDU Viewer interface. It displays the contents of the document. The program allows you to work with several documents simultaneously. In this case, tabs with the names of document files will appear at the top of the viewing area.

You can also display all open documents in the form of thumbnails (picture below) for easier viewing.

• Scale by selection. Allows you to zoom in on the area you selected with your mouse.
• Search text in a document. Opens the Search tab in the Navigation Pane.

Depending on the file format, STDU Viewer offers a "special" tool, placing it in the toolbar. For example, for FB2 and PDF there is a tool for extracting illustrations from a document. For DJVU – format converter (picture below). But these are already paid functions.

A quick search will allow you to find the desired expression on the pages before and after the current one. During the search, STDU Viewer will highlight the searched fragment. Search is only possible if there is a text layer.

It’s not that you don’t need 90% of the functionality of each specific viewer, it won’t even occur to you that such functionality is possible. For example, who, other than those intensely interested in the DjVu format, will look for an item in the viewer menu, by clicking on which you can find out what layers the page consists of.

So, in order not to study a dozen programs to solve one problem, we made STDU Viewer. He is ready to view everything, or almost everything. Most of the formats in which documents roam the Internet can be opened in STDU Viewer.

But a question immediately arises, based on life experience. Versatility is wonderful, but doesn't it come at the expense of functionality? To answer this, first of all, we should take care of the list of those necessary options that we need when viewing documents.

So, in order.

The first thing, of course, is the ability to scale. What is desirable is not just setting the numerical scale, but also the ability of the program to automatically fit the page into the screen in width or height. STDU Viewer satisfies this requirement.

If a document has a content tree, you need the ability to go to the selected chapter or paragraph. STDU Viewer has it.

If this is FB2, Epub or some other text format, I would like to be able to customize the font in which the document is displayed. There it is again.

It is advisable to quickly go through the page thumbnails. Eat.

An electronic document is pleasantly different from a paper book in that it allows you to search for a specific word. And we can do this. Moreover, unlike most others, it’s not easy to find a word, but also to build a list of all occurrences of a given word in a document, with a quick transition to the right place.

Everything seems to be in order with the necessary set. Those. We have at least what we need for comfortable work.

But there is something more.

Bookmarks. In STDU Viewer, you can create bookmarks for each document, and even structure them in the form of a tree. If there is no built-in content in the document, this is, let’s say without undue modesty, a great help.

Sessions. When working with scientific books or technical documentation, it is not uncommon to have several documents open at once and switch between them. Here we read the text, in another document we look at the definition of some concepts used in the text, and in the third, comments from specialists. And such work usually takes more than a day or two. And that every time you resume work you have to go back and open all the necessary documents? With STDU Viewer this is not necessary. We save a set of open documents as a session, and next time we open them all at once with one click.

Backlight. When you read a book, you often want to save some written thought, copy it into a quotation book. You can, of course, simply select the text and copy it into Notepad. And it’s not even very difficult to keep a notepad open and copy quotes there. And at the same time sign the page numbers from which you copied. But it is much more convenient when the list of citations is generated directly in the viewer. And it opens along with the document. And, of course, you can then save these quotes to a text file.

Export text. It happens that you need to take a large quote from a book, not a couple of sentences, but another page. You can, of course, select the text and copy it to the clipboard. But in STDU Viewer you can do it easier, take and export several necessary pages into a text document.

And that's not all. For example, those who work on devices with a touchscreen can divide the screen into zones and assign their own command to each zone (for example, scrolling in this way is very convenient).

All that remains is to add that this is all a story about a free program, with an installation of two and a half megabytes, and I think the answer is “why another program like this?” can, in some way, be considered closed.
