Design, construction

Before moving on to the X Compact, let's take a quick look at Sony's "compact" history. In the beginning, there was the Z1 Compact, and many (rightly) consider it the best - the design, high-quality materials, the camera, the smartphone was liked by both connoisseurs of small smartphones and girls from the flagship. I myself walked with a smartphone for a long time yellow color There was simply no other like it on the market.

Then the Z3 Compact appeared, where plastic was used instead of metal ends, which caused indignation among many. However, many appreciated compact body and characteristics like a flagship - it had the same processor as the Z3.

So we got to the Z5 Compact, which is still quite relevant today. The yellow case was returned again, it has become a tradition to use plastic, and the characteristics are similar to those of the flagship Z5 with differences characteristic of the “compact”.

Now imagine that you have already seen the XZ and you are asked to guess what the X Compact will be like.

I think that even without any preparation, every advanced student will predict everything as accurately as possible. Alas, there is no metal "back" here - plastic is used. But the futuristic design has not gone anywhere, the smartphone looks like a sort of solid bar - if we talk about black color, then the prints are immediately visible, on light smartphones they are not so noticeable. If you don't like traces, choose white or smoky blue. Naturally, when choosing colors, they probably counted on girls, namely the weaker sex - the main consumers of the device (I think so, life will judge). Don't like pigeon? Well, there is black with an interesting shade and snow-white X Compact. The dimensions are small, the smartphone literally fits in the palm of your hand, invisible in your pocket. Beautiful - definitely. The ends are even, the device can be placed, on the bottom there is a USB Type-C connector, at the top is 3.5 mm, on the left is a slot for a memory card or a SIM card, on the right are volume buttons, cameras, power buttons with a built-in fingerprint sensor. The case is licked to the limit, look at these joints, the design of various details, got rid of everything superfluous, leaving only the necessary. I really like the design of the XZ / X Compact, the simplest form, about what I expected.

Of course, there will be those who will not like all this, but that's how it always happens.

Unlike the XZ, there will only be a single-SIM version, 32 GB memory, it is easy to install a microSD memory card in the slot.

There is no water protection here.

Display

The diagonal of the IPS display is 4.6 inches, HD resolution is quite normal for a device of this size (and for a battery too). There is support for TRILUMINOS proprietary technologies, when viewing photos or videos, the colors of the pictures look better, X-Reality Engine, an “improver” for video.

The display protection is slightly curved, all in the spirit of modern trends.

Peculiarities

FLAC, ALAC, DSD are initially supported, there is an LDAC codec for Bluetooth, and Sony is diligently expanding its line of LDAC-enabled accessories. Finally, synchronization between divisions is visible - laser focusing is now on both cameras and smartphones, you can use the device as a screen for PS4, recordings converted to digital from the PS-HX500 vinyl player can be played on Sony Xperia X compact. I know these are very relative advantages, but in our time of sheer boredom in the electronics market, the approach is respected - I wonder how much longer Sony will be able to follow such an unpopular path? Hopefully for a very, very long time.

It uses a five-pin 3.5 mm connector, and supports noise-canceling headsets, microphones, and other accessories.

Working hours

With a 2700mAh battery, proprietary STAMINA and UltraSTAMINA technologies, the X Compact will probably have better battery life than the XZ, but it all depends on how you use smartphones in your daily activities.

I have already said about the USB Type-C connector, it will take some getting used to. Qnovo AdaptiveCharging technology is supported, which allows you to extend battery life, there is also fast charging, with the help of a special charger it will be possible to halve the charging time.

Performance

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 chipset is used, which is quite fresh, interesting, here Adreno 510 is responsible for the graphics, which, of course, is good. You can see the characteristics. RAM 3 GB, 32 GB of memory for user data, available, of course, a little less. Those devices that we managed to try behave quite normally - probably problems with modern games will not be.

Like the XZ, it will have its own program of tips for the user, tips on using the device. The smartphone comes out on Android 6.0, the upgrade to the "seven" will take place without fail.

cameras

The main camera is 23 MP, there is no 4K recording, but the rest is similar to the Sony Xperia XZ. They added laser autofocus - well, in general, this device has all the focusing systems, from conventional to predictive. Let's see how it will affect the pictures. It uses a 23 MP sensor for the main camera, 24 mm G-lens optics, BIONZ process for image processing. The camera, according to company representatives, is one of the main advantages of the device.

Let's try to list the features, most of which are new to Xperia in general:

  • Laser autofocus will help you create clear, high-quality images even in poor lighting conditions.
  • In addition to laser, there is also predictive autofocus - it will help you take clear pictures of moving objects.
  • Stabilization when shooting, we tried to shoot video and move our hands, the operation of the system is visible to the naked eye. By the way, it was a very interesting experience.
  • Now you can specify the area to focus by touching the screen.
  • The sensor here is RGBC-IR, they say, the colors are natural in a variety of shooting conditions.
  • When shooting video, the sound is recorded in stereo, the smartphone has two microphones and a noise reduction system.
  • There is a manual focus system, but here you will need some kind of tripod to achieve a good result.
  • You can also adjust the shutter speed (!) From 1/8 to 1/4000 s. Let me remind you again about the tripod.

Front camera 5 MP, wide-angle optics.

conclusions

Like other "compacts", here the best of Sony's flagship Xperia XZ (design, camera, LDAC, etc.) corrected for size - the display is smaller, the resolution is lower, the chipset is different, it's a shame that there is no version with two SIM cards. The device will appear on sale in September, apparently, it will replace the Z5 Compact. We can assume that the price will be at the level of 35,000 rubles. Interesting, but the Z5 is still an interesting purchase - maybe they will divorce by price? Let's see.

How do you like a smartphone? Interested in your opinion - would you like to buy? What would you like to change in the Sony Xperia X Compact? Your opinion is very interesting and useful - it is especially interesting to listen to the owners of the former "compacts".

The Xperia Compact family at one time made a lot of noise - about two or three years ago, when people were not yet used to standard "more than five inches", and companies almost without exception stopped releasing anything less, it came in handy. Today, 5.5 inches is the norm, and the category of ceiling phablets includes devices with screens from six inches (it's scary to think, at one time the first was considered a phablet). Galaxy Note with a diagonal of 5.3 inches).

In general, it seems that the time of the kids is irretrievably gone. But that's why we love Sony Japanese company not always chasing trends, trying to keep traditions. Sometimes, however, it smacks of corporate sluggishness, and sometimes it turns out to be a breath of fresh air in a world of identical decisions. What is more in the Sony Xperia X Compact?

Mini X has as much in common with the title model of the series as with the new flagship - Xperia XZ. However, Compact smartphones consistently received very powerful stuffing- small in this case did not mean weak. But just in X Compact, the tradition of putting the flagship system on a chip was violated - it works on the basis of a mid-range platform, Qualcomm Snapdragon 650, the same as in Xperia X. At the same time, the design and camera of the compact version are common with the XZ. Let the materials used and simpler - the case is not metal, but plastic. The diagonal of the display remains the same as that of the previous "compact" - 4.6 inches.

Appearance, ergonomics and software

The Sony Xperia X Compact, as I noted above, is made according to the same Loop Surface design code as the Xperia XZ - with edges that visually flow into one another, the same bend of the front panel and back, curved side panels, but absolutely flat top and bottom. At the same time, the general impression that appeared when looking at the Z5 Compact was preserved - the novelty also seems too thick. And this is not an illusion: nine and a half millimeters - we have not seen this for a long time.

Another solution that can cause controversy is the use of glossy plastic. Smartphone manufacturers seem to have already stopped mocking the public and are no longer trying to embellish reality in a stupid way - special type of polycarbonate the material used here is nobody's calling. Plastic is just plastic. And, for my taste, it looks quite good, although the white X Compact is suggestive of Chinese crafts from the 2000s. At a time when even the very Chinese manufacturers are lining their devices with metal budget smartphones, such a decision seems bold, turning everything upside down.

But the white version is very convenient if you are not too fond of carrying cases or constantly wiping down your gadgets. Glossy plastic is generally a very easily soiled material, but in this case nothing is noticeable, the smartphone will look like new for a very long time.

Sony Xperia X Compact, rear panel: left upper corner- camera lens, single LED flash, infrared sensor and contrast focusing laser

The main reason for which the X Compact, in fact, was created is the dimensions. The usual stamped phrases about the convenience of one-handed operation look more than ever here. If suddenly a person who is accustomed to the iPhone (but despised the Plus version) wants to switch to Android, then climbing over to the "compact" will probably be the easiest. It’s not even worth talking about the fact that a smartphone enters any pocket freely and easily. In a lady's handbag - of course, too. And the delicate colors of the body, in which the smartphone is offered, just hint that many copies of the X Compact will most likely end up there.

Sony Xperia X Compact, top: headphone/headset mini-jack and microphone

The arrangement of functional elements will not surprise people familiar with any xperia latest years. If this is your first Sony smartphone, then you will be slightly puzzled by the hardware camera/shutter button, the location of the volume key at the bottom of the edge, and the fingerprint scanner built into the side power button of the device. As well as a slot for a memory card and a SIM card, devoid of a pin lock. The latter, by the way, is quite convenient - in contrast to the ability of a smartphone to reboot with every action with this slot. It is not even necessary to change the cards - it will inevitably turn off and on, you just need to move the plug.

Compact smartphones with serious stuffing are not so common. One of them can be considered the Sony Xperia X Compact, which appeared in the fall of 2016. Someone even called it the “killer” of the iPhone SE. The device with a 4.6” screen is equipped with a USB Type-C connector, boasts a 6-core processor and a 23 MP camera.

The minimum price that could be found at the time of the creation of the review is $ 487. The regular price is around 500 USD. For the same money, you can now safely purchase last year's flagship from Samsung - Galaxy S6. Let's try to figure out what exactly Sony can offer in return for $ 500.

Specifications Sony Xperia X Compact

The mobile device has a filling inherent in the middle class of devices. However, among compact devices, this is almost the flagship.

Appearance, connectors, buttons and sensors

The design of Xperia X Compact inherits the general style of modern smartphones from Sony. At the same time, he has his own individual traits (which are also inherent flagship Xperia XZ). Appearance meets all the standards of minimalism: there is nothing superfluous on the case. The new design concept "Continuous Surface" consists of rounded edges that smoothly flow into each other. On the front panel, this is facilitated by 2.5D glass. It turns out a neat brick, which just asks for a hand.

Interesting body colors have been added: smoky blue, snow white and space black (more like a dark shade of blue). The product is made of plastic, but thanks to a special coating, the back panel has a ceramic glossy sheen.

On the bottom edge there is a symmetrical USB Type-C 2.0 connector, on the top edge there is a 3.5 mm audio jack. On the left side, under the plug, there is a tray that holds one SIM card and a USB flash drive.

On the right side, a large power button is striking, in which a fingerprint sensor is mounted. A little lower is the volume rocker, and a separate button for taking photos and videos.

The lower and upper ribs received a flat rectangular surface. As a result, taking into account the modest height of the case (129 mm) and a noticeable thickness (9.5 mm), the device can be placed on the table in an upright position. The gadget fits perfectly in the hand: its width is 65 mm, and it weighs only 135 g.

CPU

The Sony Xperia X Compact is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 8956 processor. It has six 64-bit cores. Of these, 2 are "fast" Cortex-A72 with a frequency of 1.8 GHz. Another 4 Cortex A53 cores operate at a frequency of 1.4 GHz. The Adreno 510 video chip is responsible for graphics processing. this moment The Snapdragon 650 is not considered a top processor. However, it has a significant performance margin.

In Antutu 6, the device scores about 76 thousand points. It copes equally well with both typical everyday tasks and with the launch of "heavy" games. HD screen resolution does not create heavy load on the video chip, so you can safely play at medium graphics settings.

Memory

The smartphone received a solid volume random access memory: 3 GB. It seems that this is even more than necessary for this "baby". You can open a whole bunch of tabs in the browser, run several applications at the same time - for the Sony Xperia X Compact, this is not a problem.

Built-in memory is also a lot: 32 GB. It is clear that there will be a little less free space. But the manufacturer took care of supporting memory cards up to 256 GB.

Offline work

Battery capacity - 2700 mAh. Not bad for small smartphone. With low loads, it can work for 2-3 days. If you actively use the device in mixed mode, the charge is confidently enough for the whole day. A real test showed that the X Compact is able to work for 14 hours of talk time (in a 3G network). Or 11.5 hours of web surfing.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the proprietary energy saving settings: Stamina and Ultra Stamina. If the first mode deactivates the most “gluttonous” functions of the smartphone, then the second one leaves only the basic functionality. As a result, significant battery savings. Supports fast charging Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0.

Adaptive charging technology is also implemented. In short - it automatically adjusts the parameters of replenishment of power, and controls the electrochemical processes in the battery. This contributes to a significant extension of battery life.

Camera

The main camera of the IMX300 is capable of taking pictures with a resolution of 23 MP. Aperture - F / 2.0. During shooting, three sensors interact to help you get the most out of the 24mm wide-angle Exmor RS sensor.

  1. Predictive hybrid autofocus. Follows a moving subject so that the picture is clear and not blurry.
  2. Laser autofocus. Determines the distance to the object, helps to quickly focus on it in low light.
  3. RGBC-IRi sensor. Able to capture infrared waves, is responsible for the most correct selection of white balance. As a result - the correct color reproduction without unnecessary headaches.

The smartphone will appeal to those who need to take a picture "here and now." When you press the shutter button, it “wakes up” and is ready to shoot in 0.6 seconds. Finished images are processed quickly. Provided manual settings(you can adjust the shutter speed, make manual focus, etc.).

In good light, the resulting photographs are very detailed. The color reproduction is really close to natural. However, the camera falls short of the quality of the current year's flagships. For example, when studying pictures in detail, you can notice blurry areas along the edges of the frame. And in scenes with a very bright light source, the frame may turn out to be overexposed.

Video is recorded in FullHD resolution with a frame rate of 30 and 60 FPS, as well as with stereo sound (2 microphones and a noise reduction system are used). Alas, 4K resolution is not supported. When recording video with trembling hands, the five-axis SteadyShot stabilization system comes in handy.

The front camera received a 5 MP wide-angle module. It does not differ in anything special, but it allows you to get quite acceptable photos with a good level of lighting.

Display

The screen is small (4.6 inches), but high quality. With such a modest diagonal by today's standards, it has a solid HD resolution (1280 x 720). Made with Triluminos and X-Reality technologies. The first is designed to create a rich color palette by better displaying green, blue and red colors. The second makes the image more colorful, saturated, contrast and clear.

The display has a high margin of brightness, so in sunny weather there will be no problems with the visibility of the image. Corning Gorilla Glass is used to protect against scratches. The touchscreen recognizes 10 touches at the same time.

Networking

Only one Nano SIM can be installed. Supported networks: 2G/3G/4G. In stock wireless modules NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, WiFi a/b/g/n/ac (2.4 + 5 GHz). There are also GLONASS and GPS (A-GPS) navigation modules. All communications work perfectly.

Sound

The smartphone is equipped with two stereo speakers, their openings are located on the top and bottom of the front panel. The volume margin is below average. But in a not particularly noisy environment, the call will be heard well. It is desirable to listen to music through headphones using the pre-installed player from Sony. The sound quality is excellent, you can use the built-in software "improvers" sound and equalizer.

Software part

The device runs on Android 6.0.1. In the future there will be possible update systems up to Android 7.0 Nougat. The standard OS interface is replaced by a shell from Sony. It modifies the interface to a certain extent, contains advanced settings and proprietary applications / services from the manufacturer.

Smartphone Features

  • Many Sony smartphones are water resistant. Please note that this model does not include waterproofing.
  • The small size of the case did not interfere with the installation of the USB-C connector.
  • So far, this is the only 4.6-inch smartphone with 3 GB of RAM.
  • The physical button for shooting is two-stage. When pressed halfway, focusing occurs.
  • The presence of a fingerprint scanner in the power button depends on which market the Xperia X Compact is intended for.

Advantages and disadvantages

Pros:

  • individual, attractive design;
  • a combination of compact size and powerful stuffing;
  • good autonomy;
  • good display;
  • interesting camera.

Minuses:

  • only 1 SIM card;
  • The kit does not include a charger with the ability to quickly recharge;
  • too expensive for our market.

Who is a smartphone for?

A good option for those who are looking for a convenient, compact smartphone with decent hardware. In this case, the budget does not play a special role. It may be of particular interest to the beautiful half of our planet.

Our review of the Sony Xperia X Compact smartphone

A very interesting device, despite the crazy price tag. The Sony Xperia X Compact is packed full of features, some of which just didn't fit in this review. And even if not all the features will be really interesting to the user, but the model clearly stands out against the background of total uniformity in "smartphone construction". In addition, 4.6-inch smartphones with a fingerprint scanner and 3 GB of RAM are now rare.

The Sony Xperia X Compact is a mini version of the current flagship that quite a few fans of the brand have been waiting for. In the best traditions of Sony, the model was presented with a new flagship smartphone. New design, implementation of new technologies in the field of photo opportunities and comfort of use for all fans compact devices- that's what the Sony Xperia X Compact focuses on. For the most part, the model fully complies with the ideology of releasing models of the “Compact” series, but still there are some points that at first could cause some doubts among ardent fans of “Compacts”.

ExternalviewXperia X Compact

The updated design is called Loop Surface, and its essence lies in the smooth flow of one side of the case to another, which is ensured by the use of 2.5D glass, smoothly merging with the side edge on one side and rounded back cover passing to the same face, but from the other side. The case is made of plastic with a glossy finish, visually and tactilely close to ceramics. The bottom and top faces are flat, and the transition to them is slightly angular - this solution is clearly new for the manufacturer. Even with the design change, we see Sony sticking to its core concept of symmetry and convenience.

The combination of such design solutions and small dimensions (129 x 65 x 9.5 mm and a weight of 135 grams) make it very comfortable to hold the smartphone in your hand and it is really pleasant to use it, both in terms of ergonomics and tactile sensations. A big disappointment was the lack of moisture protection, although splash protection is possible, which the company decided not to even report.

The body colors in which the smartphone will be available differ from the classic color schemes due to a complex combination of different shades that were taken from various natural phenomena: Mist Blue (smoky blue), Universe Black (space black) and White (snow white). For example, Mist Blue is a completely new color for the line and represents the color of steam rising from the lake and merging with the blue sky - just think how confused the designers were when creating each of the shades.

Technical specificationsSonyXperiaXCompact

Sony is almost the only one of the well-known brands on the market that offered compact smartphones with top-end hardware characteristics, and users already involuntarily perceive such models from the Japanese as mini-flagships. But this time, the company has eschewed the flagship chipset, using the Snapdragon 650, a similar chip to the Xperia X. In principle, there is logic in this, since this is a mini version, judging by the name of the model, “X”, and not “XZ” – it is worth understanding.

Moreover, even this solution will provide high performance, while the use of the Snapdragon 820 would have been excessive in this situation and only led to a rise in the price of the smartphone. Users who are accustomed to the fact that Compact smartphones technically fully correspond to the title of mini-flagship may be somewhat upset. In fact, a Snapdragon 650 with a 6-core processor and an Adreno 510 video accelerator, with proper software optimization and using a 4.6-inch screen with HD resolution (1280 by 720 pixels), will show excellent performance in real life- it's time to realize that the time of competition for the highest numbers in benchmarks has passed.

Traditionally, a smartphone gets a 4.6-inch screen, but all with the same HD resolution and 319ppi dot density, which is a little embarrassing in 2016, given the positioning of the model. Yes, such a display is less demanding on resources, but in our opinion it would be fashionable to use a more progressive matrix with Full HD. Additional improvements include the use of TRILUMINOS and X-Reality technologies. The screen, unlike its predecessors, has become noticeably better, the colors are richer, the blacks are deeper. The model will come in one version with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB internal memory with a slot for microSD-cards up to 256 GB. The power button has a built-in fingerprint scanner. The audio capabilities of the model are flagship - there are two stereo speakers and all proprietary sound enhancement technologies.

It's good that the battery has not been cut - its capacity is 2700 mAh. There are advanced battery conservation technologies Qnovo Adaptive Charging and Battery Care - gentle charging. Well, the presence of a special adapter (not included) can be carried out fast charging smartphone. Let's see what kind of autonomy Xperia X Compact will show, but the manufacturer still guarantees a full day and a half from a single charge in use mode. I don’t think it’s necessary to have all modern sensors and wireless connection modules, I’ll only note the use of the new USB Type-C format, which is good news.

Acquaintance with the smartphone on video:

Key features of the Xperia X Compact F5321:

flagship camera

Naturally, being a company directly related to the development of photographic technologies, Sony did not cut the new “Compact” to the main camera, applying all the same technological chips as in the Xperia XZ. The smartphone also received a 23-megapixel main module (sensor model IMX300) with predictive hybrid autofocus, with a fast lock-on focus that follows it if it moves. Two more sensors come to the aid of the module: the first is a sensor with laser focusing, which increases the speed of focusing and its efficiency in low light conditions, the second is an RGBc-IR (infra-red sensor) sensor that allows you to correct the white balance and keep colors in their natural form.

IN manual mode shooting, it became possible to adjust various parameters: the choice of exposure, white balance, focus type, exposure. Tapu exposure and manual focusing on objects are also available. Shooting video in 4K is not announced, but Full HD at 60 frames per second - please. And here front-camera has more boring parameters - a 5-megapixel sensor with a wide-angle lens (essentially like the previous Z5 Compact).

The design of the smartphone is very different from previous models. Previously, Sony spoiled us with glass, metal ... Now the device does not look premium. The basis of the case is a regular plastic, moreover, the plastic is glossy. It all looks as if you have a toy smartphone in your hands, and not an expensive representative of the “compact” Sony series. But, despite this, the case is not slippery and feels nice in the hand, it just doesn’t look as cool as it used to be, but the design is a specific thing, someone might like it, I personally don’t like it, so I’ll write it out even cons, although I do it quite rarely.

The side edges of the device are rounded, due to which it fits comfortably in the hand. From the point of view of ergonomics, there are no complaints about the device, it just looks cheap. For some reason, the case turned out to be quite thick, but this did not affect the ergonomics in a bad way.

You will not find anything unusual in the kit, everything is standard: a smartphone, documentation, USB cable Type C and Charger. The smartphone is available in three colors: black, blue and white.

shell

There were no slowdowns in the interface. The device runs on almost stock Android 6.0. There is nothing supernatural in the shell, except for unlocking and locking with a double tap. This is how minimalism from Sony looks like, but everything works very smoothly, smartly and pleases the eye. The device "out of the box" has a new, fresh theme that distinguishes it from the devices of previous generations. The clock looks very nice, for example. In general, the shell is cool, even despite its low functionality when compared with competitors. The fingerprint scanner works perfectly, works instantly and never makes a mistake.

Specifications

  • CPU

    Qualcomm MSM8956 Snapdragon 650, 4x1.4 GHz + 2x1.8 GHz

  • video processor

Not top notch but powerful processor got this model, most importantly, fresh, this year. All past errors have been removed, however, there is little heating under loads, but not critical. The processor has 6 cores with a frequency of up to 1.8 GHz, the language does not dare to call it weak.

Memory

There is 3 GB of RAM, which is more than enough . In the "kids" of previous models, this was not the case. There were only 2. Well, an extra gigabyte of RAM has never bothered anyone. The built-in memory in our sample turned out to be 32 GB, which is quite good, and you can expand the memory using microSD cards another 256 GB.

Connection

Networks do an excellent job with their tasks, even NFC is there.
