Where is the screen button. What key to take a screenshot

Create screenshots using Windows tools:

Screenshots for advanced:

Even if you have never wondered how to take a screenshot on a computer before, do not relax, sooner or later such a question will arise. As soon as you need to show a friend the settings of a program, an error in Windows, or simply explain what is so strange that has come out on your monitor, not to mention a professional description of the functionality of programs, screenshots come to the rescue. Using images, it is most convenient and understandable to convey information to any person! After all, it is always easier and faster to show a picture (screenshot on a computer) than to spend a lot of time explaining on the phone, or even more so, typing a mountain of text in a chat.

What is a screenshot, where is the Print Screen button on the keyboard and how to use the clipboard?

The creators of Windows have provided a separate button on the keyboard, which is responsible for screenshots in all Windows systems, regardless of version - PrtScr (read as Print Screen - the print screen button, if you speak Russian).
When you press this button in the upper right part of the keyboard, the current screen image is copied to the clipboard. The resulting picture is called a screenshot.
But it turns out that taking a screenshot is only half the battle, you also need to save a screenshot from the clipboard, for which you need to paste it into any graphics editor key combination "ctrl" + "v", and then save to graphic file with one of the popular extensions, such as jpg or png.

An example of the SnagIT application features:

An example of the editing capabilities of the Joxi extension

We have already figured out how to make a print screen on a computer with any popular operating system from Microsoft, Apple, Unix-like, now let's talk a little about Android smartphones and tablets. Since version 2.3, the user can take screenshots of the phone by simply pressing the Volume Up + Power keys. In some cases, Volume Down + Power may occur. If the combination does not work, look for a separate manual for your phone model. Most likely the manufacturer changed standard settings in its proprietary shell.

Some users complain that the print screen button on the keyboard does not work for them. If you are reading this article, you are probably also experiencing the same problem. Don't worry, we have prepared a guide that will help you solve the problem and fix the printscreen button on your computer.

Solution 1

First, we must remind you that the print screen button does not create a screenshot on your computer. In fact, printscreen takes a screenshot and saves it to the clipboard. In other words, after you have pressed the print screen button, you need to open a graphics editor such as Paint and paste the image.

Solution 2

If print screen on the keyboard does not work, try pressing the key combination Fn + Print Screen, or Alt + Print Screen, or Alt + Fn + Print Screen.

Solution 3

Some keyboards have a dedicated lock key function keys. Usually it says F Mode or F Lock. If your keyboard has such a key, press it to make print screen work.

Solution 4

Quite often it occurs when the printscreen button on the keyboard does not work due to third party programs such as OneDrive, Dropbox, Snipping tool. Try closing any active programs that might be interfering with the print screen button in any way, and try again to take a screenshot of the screen.

Solution 5

If the methods above do not solve the problem when the print screen button does not work on the computer, you should try updating the operating system.

1. Open Start and type "Windows Update Settings".

2. Click on the "Check for Updates" button.

Windows will look for available updates for your computer and install them if necessary.

Solution 6

It is possible that the print screen button on your computer is not working due to outdated keyboard drivers. In this case, you need to update the drivers on your PC. You can do with two methods:

Method 1: Update Drivers Manually

You can update your keyboard and hotkey drivers by downloading them from the official website of your computer manufacturer. Using an HP laptop as an example, we will show how to download drivers for the keyboard.

1. First, go to the website of your computer manufacturer using this link.

3. Choose an operating system.

4. Find and expand the "Keyboard driver" and "Mouse and input devices" dialog.

5. Then we find the HP HotKey Support driver and click "Download".

6. Click on the downloaded .exe file to install latest driver, and restart the computer.

Method 2: Update Drivers Automatically

You can also use third-party programs to download and install drivers on your computer, such as Driver Easy.

Solution 7

If none of the solutions above solved the problem when the print screen button on the keyboard does not work, then use the built-in tool in Windows called Scissors. This program helps to take a screenshot of a computer screen or a separate part of it.

Quick screenshot

If it was not possible to solve the problem with regular means, and the built-in scissors program seems inconvenient to you, with insufficient functionality, then you can use the free program Monosnap.

The utility can create screenshots, edit them, and send to your own cloud service to share the link. The built-in editor does not abound with many tools like in professional Photoshop, but it does its job one hundred percent. The developers have focused on speed and convenience.

The program captures the screen image instantly, you can set up keyboard shortcuts (useful when print screen not working). Image processing is basic: draw arrows or any shapes, make a signature, can crop unnecessary, blur a specific area, resize). All these operations also take seconds, everything is at hand. When editing is finished, just click on the button, and the picture will go to the Monosnap cloud (you can also set up your own FTP). It remains only to copy the url of the picture, and you can send the address to friends or work. Everything is as simple as possible. The program integrates its line into the context, so you can send pictures to the cloud from any of your directory / folder or desktop.

For a snapshot, you can select only part of the screen, at least a minimal one, new versions can record video from the camera, screen the gameplay. You can set the default folder, and all the screenshots will automatically be poured there.

That's all. We hope that you managed to fix the error, the print screen button on the keyboard does not work, and finally take a screenshot of the screen.

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to take a screenshot on a computer. We will learn how to take screenshots using standard Windows tools and special programs.

What is a screenshot

A screenshot is a photograph of the screen at a certain point in time. Such a snapshot can be either the entire screen or a separate part of it. For example, a snapshot of only one window.

To create screenshots on the computer keyboard, there is special key PrintScreen. It may also be called PrtScr, Prt Sc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn.

By clicking on the Print Screen button, the computer screen is photographed. But at the same time there will be no clicks or flashes - the picture will simply be fixed in the computer's memory (clipboard).

Then this photo needs to be pulled out, and for this, inserted into some program. It's easiest in Paint, since it's standard program Windows, and it is in almost every computer.

Important! After pressing the Print Screen key, you cannot copy anything until you paste the picture into the program. Otherwise, it will be replaced by the copied information.

How to take a screenshot

Via Paint

one . Press once on the Print Screen key on the keyboard.

If you have a laptop, then you need to press the key combination Fn and Print Screen - first one key, then, without releasing it, the other.

2. Click on the Start button and select Standard - Paint from the list.

Or, in the search bar, type "paint" without quotes and open the program.

3 . In the program window, click the "Insert" button.

four . We cut off the excess through the "Select" and "Crop" at the top.

First, click on Select.

Then we press the left mouse button and, without releasing it, circle the part that needs to be left. After that, click on "Crop".

If you didn't manage to circle the first time, click outside the selected area once with the left mouse button - the selection will be reset.

5 . We save the picture to the computer. To do this, click on the save icon at the top of the program () or File - Save.

The save file window appears. First, you need to select the place on the computer where we want to record the screenshot.

Then you need to change the name of the picture and select the format. To do this, click on the "File name" field at the bottom and type in a new name for the screenshot. In the Format field, select either PNG or JPG. Then click "Save".

That's all! The resulting snapshot is now written to the specified location (). If you selected Desktop, then you need to look for it on the computer screen.

On a note . Thus, we photograph the entire computer screen. But if you need to take a picture of only one window, then you need to press not Print Screen, but a combination Alt keys+ Print Screen. On a laptop: Fn + Alt + Print Screen.

Via Scissors

Scissors are separate program to take screenshots. It is more convenient than Paint.

Scissors either exists in Windows or it doesn't. It depends on the system version. So if you cannot find this program through the "Start", then it simply is not on the computer.

The program window will appear.

3 . As soon as you release the left mouse button, the selected area will be photographed and added to a small program.

There are a couple of editing tools here. Pen - something like a pencil for underlining. Marker - for stroke.

four . Save the image to your computer using the button. This one is done the same way.

Windows + Print Screen

In Windows 8 and 10, you can take a screen automatically - without inserting into the program and saving. To do this, just press the key combination Win + Print Screen.

  2. Greenshot;
  3. Monoshap;
  4. Joxi;
  5. clip2net;
  6. Shotnes;

Each of the programs has its own advantages and disadvantages.

How to take a screenshot of the screen on a computer, the user decides for himself, based on his own preferences and goals.

Personally, I prefer to use the screenshot program -Lightshot. Watch my video review of her and maybe you will love her too.

In all Windows operating systems, up to the recently introduced Windows 8, the screenshot was saved only to the clipboard. The clipboard is RAM. Usually you use the clipboard when you copy something and paste it somewhere else. For example, by selecting text and pressing Ctrl+C, you place the selected text on the clipboard. Later, you can paste this text anywhere you like.

The same thing happens when you press the Print Screen key. The Windows operating system takes a screenshot (a picture of everything that is happening on your screen). After a screenshot is taken, the operating system places it on the clipboard.

The screenshot is then available to the user. It can be inserted into any program that can work with images. In order to paste the resulting screenshot, it is enough to use the usual key combination Ctrl + V or the “Paste” command from the context menu.

The most common way to save screenshots is to Paint program. It is installed with the operating system and is available in the Start - All Programs menu. It can also be launched using the search or the Run menu, which is launched using the Windows + R key combination.

At the same time, it should be recalled that, in addition to simply pressing the Print Screen key, you can use the Print Screen + Alt key combination. If you use this key combination, you will get a snapshot of only one active window, that is, the window that is at the very top and with which you are working. Naturally, screenshots taken using the Print Screen + Alt combination are saved in exactly the same way. After taking a screenshot, it is placed on the clipboard, after which it can be pasted anywhere.

How Print Screen is saved in the Windows 8 operating system

Everything works exactly the same. But there is one feature here, in addition to the old Print Screen and Print Screen + Alt key combinations, Windows 8 has another one - Windows + Print Screen.

The keyboard shortcut Windows+Print Screen automatically saves a screenshot to Libraries\Pictures\Screenshots. Thus, you immediately get the finished file, and you do not have to launch Paint to save the resulting screenshot.
