In addition to several high-quality images, company logos and pictograms, here you can find detailed information about all the technical and functional capabilities of the purchased accessory.

Inside the box is a clear plastic container. Due to its characteristic shape and convenient groove system, it securely holds the headset during transportation.

The LG TONE+ HBS-500 delivery set contains all the necessary list of elements for a quick and comfortable start. It includes: USB cable, 3 pairs of replacement ear pads, paper user manual, warranty card and WEEE card, which indicates LG's participation in the recycling program for hazardous waste in the electronics industry.

Appearance, design features

In terms of design and functionality the reviewed headset is a slightly simplified version of the more expensive and advanced in technical terms model LG TONE + HBS-730, which became the ancestor of the series. However, having inherited a stylish appearance, the novelty has also acquired a number of interesting features.

The base of the LG TONE + HBS-500 case is made of black matte plastic, which is successfully diluted with silver inserts. This material is of high quality and has pleasant tactile properties. In addition, such a classic color scheme harmonizes well with any style of clothing, including business, when the main headphone module is placed under the shirt collar. But when talking or listening to music, the wires will peek out a little due to the peculiarities of attaching them to the case, which, however, does not create much discomfort.

The headset itself has compact dimensions (168 x 140 x 18.1 mm) and modest weight (29 g), which only accompanies its trouble-free use throughout the day, without noticeable fatigue and other inconveniences. Its design is a small rubber rim with a diameter of 4 mm, in which there is a wire connecting two functional blocks located at the edges. They resemble highly elongated droplets with a maximum diameter of 18.1 mm, on which there is a cut edge for placing controls.

So, on the left module there is a multifunctional button for ending a call and starting voice control. Pressing it twice starts playing music tracks (Start / Pause), and holding it starts the pairing mode with external device or the headset is turned on/off.

There is also a small opening for a spoken microphone, and a little to the side there is an LED activity indicator and a micro-USB connector for charging the battery. The latter is closed with a dense rubber plug that prevents moisture from entering.

The right module has two volume buttons, which, when double-clicked, can switch the selected songs on the paired device, as well as, if necessary, enable / disable the built-in vibrating alert.

In general, such a constructive solution with division into two functional blocks allows achieving good weight distribution, because the drop-shaped modules act as weights and do not allow the headset to fly off the neck even with fairly active actions.

As for the headphones themselves, in this wireless accessory they use a vacuum driver form and are equipped with three pairs of interchangeable ear cushions (small, medium and large). This allows you to choose the perfect option for almost any user.

For the convenience of using the headset in the stowed position, there are special grooves on the sidewalls of the functional blocks, in which sufficiently strong magnets are inserted. They securely fix the headphones inside the mount and prevent them from chaotic hanging while walking.

In addition, on the back of the handle, between the working modules, there are two clips that press the wires (24 cm each) quite tightly to the base, adjusting their length and preventing them from getting tangled.

The build quality of LG TONE + HBS-500 deserves only positive feedback. All structural elements fit very tightly: there are no noticeable backlashes or gaps. The overall rigidity of the structure is also on top. The rubber shackle is flexible and doesn't cause a feeling of fear even with increased pressure or more active mode of use.

A useful addition to the LG TONE + HBS-500 functionality is proprietary software that allows you to fully unlock the potential of the accessory under review. It has a pleasant and intuitive interface, and also contains a number of very interesting and quite useful features. In particular, with its help, the user can simultaneously connect two paired devices to the headset at once, control the playback mode of music tracks, set the volume level in one click, and also set up receiving not only text, but also voice notifications from the most popular social networks. For this you need to install proprietary utility Tone & Talk and download the sound support package. Unfortunately, the Russian language is not included in this list, which may become some limitation for the residents of our region.

Sound quality

Direct testing of the sound accompaniment of the reviewed headset was carried out using a smartphone. All the necessary software was installed on it, and the pairing procedure was repeatedly carried out.

Despite the lack of official information about the size of sound drivers, their shape, volume and workmanship left more than pleasant impressions. Due to the simple, but at the same time well-adjusted ergonomics, they are in excellent contact with the auricle and provide a clear, deep and highly detailed sound throughout the available range (there are high, medium and well-defined low frequencies). And thanks to the built-in equalizer with a preset set of settings, the user will be able to quickly switch between musical styles (while holding the volume buttons), without experiencing discomfort when listening to a variety of songs.

The headphone volume reserve is enough for any conditions of use, including for a very noisy environment of urban transport. For example, by setting the volume level on the headset to the maximum value, it is quite enough to fix this parameter on the phone at around 30-35% (5-6 divisions out of 15) in order to comfortably listen to music and at the same time not fall out of the environment. At the same time, at 60% and above (9-10 bars), external noise completely disappears from the audio range, which allows you to concentrate on listening to your favorite song or audio podcast.

The use of LG TONE+ HBS-500 as a standard telephone headset also did not cause any complaints. Both from the side of the user and from the side of the interlocutor, the voice transmission was at a high level and was distinguished by a pleasant and well-distinguished sound. Interference, extraneous noise or interruptions were not observed, which indicates the high quality of the built-in microphone and the good performance of the noise reduction system. However, do not forget that this indicator primarily depends on the condition of the interlocutor's phone and the quality of mobile communications.

Testing for range and battery life

A rather unusual and in many ways unique design solution in the development of the headset made it possible to equip the LG TONE + HBS-500 with an excellent wireless module and a good battery.

For all the time of testing, we did not record even the slightest hint of possible problems with connection or connection stability. Despite the abundance of electromagnetic interference in a modern living space and the presence of natural barriers (doors, walls, ceilings), the headset almost instantly connected to an external device and supported high level signal. In the direct line of sight of the paired smartphone, it easily withstood more than 15 m of the declared distance, while in the presence of a small obstacle (window frame or plasterboard partition), the above figure was reduced to only 10 m. Even such a significant obstacle as two load-bearing walls could not affect communication quality, but only reduced the wireless communication distance to 5 m.

As for the built-in battery, it uses a non-removable 125 mAh lithium polymer battery, which provides a decent level of autonomy. With it, the LG TONE+ HBS-500 wireless headset can work up to 9 hours of talk time, up to 7.5 hours of music listening and up to 500 hours of standby time. And to fully charge the source uninterruptible power supply, you need to spend a little less than 2 hours of free time by connecting the gadget to the USB port of a stationary device.

Design and ergonomics LG Tone+ HBS-730

A rather new and unusual headset form factor at first surprises not only the owner, but also those around him, creating a not weak WOW effect. Every now and then everyone asked what kind of miracle device it was. “Collar” is a very interesting and ergonomic solution (I’ll tell you why later), but it’s not for everyone.

The arc on which the droplets themselves are attached is quite convenient. It is made of plastic, and the connecting element is made of pleasant soft rubber. Due to this, if desired, the headband can be bent in any direction without damage to the structure.

On the left arc of the LG Tone + HBS-730 there is a call acceptance button. It is surrounded by a blue activity indicator LED.

Nearby are the volume control buttons. On the outer side of the arc is a two-position power lever. On the inside there is a microUSB connector for charging. It is covered with a plug so as not to stand out from the background of the structure and remain protected.

On the right arc there was a place for the Play / Pause multimedia button and a couple of buttons for switching songs.

The headphones themselves are made in the form of droplets (plugs). They are located in special recesses, in which they are attached by magnets. In the test sample, the mounting pads were already slightly demagnetized, which is why the headphones were easily detached at the slightest impact. By the way, a microphone is hidden in the left magnetic area.

The manufacturer positions LG Tone + HBS-730 as a solution for stylish young people and athletes. At the expense of the first, perhaps it is worth deciding individually for everyone, but I will tell you about sports use in more detail. While doing basic exercises or while running, the user will not feel any discomfort, the LG Tone + HBS-730 sit confidently on the neck, practically without hanging out. The length of the wire of the droplets themselves can be adjusted using small clamps.

The only unpleasant moment is that during exercises on the press, the headphones will still subside due to the design features. In this case, either or a more sport-sharpened wireless is more suitable.

In winter, the headphones take root well under a jacket, although at first the arc still puts a little pressure on the neck, you need to get used to it or place it more comfortably.

Summing up the design and ergonomics, it is worth noting that the LG Tone + HBS-730 has some features that a future buyer needs to consider - an unusual arc shape and the risk of losing the headset during some specific exercises. Despite the total mass of 32 grams, the arc still significantly outweighs the droplets themselves.

Wireless connection

Headphones work on the Bluetooth 3.0 protocol - a strange decision, because it was possible to use a new energy-saving technology using the fourth generation protocol. The stability of the connection does not cause problems. From time to time (a couple of times a day) there may be subsidence in the quality of communication (the sound starts to stutter a little), but this passes quite quickly. Perhaps the reason for this is the steel case of my smartphone, which shields the signal a little. By the way, the headset supports simultaneous operation with two devices at once.

Yes, I can’t help but express my “fe” about the ever-blinking activity indicator. If during the day it is almost invisible, then at night, being on the neck under the jacket, the headset strives to startle others, illuminating the wearer's neck in blue.

A voice assistant is integrated into the headphones with a rather sweet female voice that somehow reminded me of Cortana. On the English language it reports connection status, incoming call and changing the volume level. There is also the possibility voice dialing by number or name of the contact, but I could not get this function to work adequately. This is due to the lengthy procedure and the frankly poor quality of speech recognition. For example, I want to call our employee. The procedure is as follows:

1. We press the call button on the headset, we hear: “Say call, followed by name or number”
2. We say “Call %username%”
3. (On the fifth try, the headset understands what I still want from it and gives an answer) “Say “1” for the first number, say “2” for the ….”
4. Arrr…

I have from two to five numbers on each contact, which creates certain problems in choosing, and given the difficulties in recognition, I preferred to abandon this idea altogether. On the other hand, it's quite an experimental thing, so I wouldn't downvote such an incident.

The claimed range of the headphones is 10 meters. In fact, it is slightly higher, which is very good. You can cook borscht to the music in the kitchen while the phone is resting on the charger in the bedroom.

Sound quality LG Tone+ HBS-730

The headset demonstrates very unexpected results in the field of music playback. Firstly, it has a very impressive volume margin. Secondly, droplets with properly selected nozzles allow you to almost completely turn off the world around you, creating excellent sound insulation even in public transport. Thirdly, the sound quality and detailing of individual compositions are commendable. Initially, headphones are well suited for listening to jazz or melodic rock. And if you twist the equalizer a little - LG Tone + HBS-730 become good candidates for the role of a club music player. Summing up, I can say that the sound quality among wireless headsets LG Tone + HBS-730 definitely deserves the first places in its price category.

The sensitivity of the microphone is not bad, you can even successfully talk on the street. There is a proprietary noise reduction, which fully fulfills the invested money.

Autonomy LG Tone + HBS-730

The autonomy indicator declared by the manufacturer is 15 hours of talk time, the battery capacity is 195 mAh, which is slightly less than the one we recently tested. On the other hand, I was able to confirm the result at 15 hours, listening to music at above average volume. So LG Tone + HBS-730 is enough for three to four days of use, if you do not run out of music for 7-10 hours in a row.

The headset takes just over 1.5 hours to fully charge, which is a normal result. The assistant informs you about the current charge level every time you turn it on. If you want to know how much battery is left at the current moment, you need to hold down the volume down button. In shortcomings, we write down what we are told not by the exact percentage of the charge level, but only by the conditional level - Low, Medium or High.

conclusions

Thus, LG Tone + HBS-730 is a rather extraordinary representative of the wireless headphone segment. The test subject has an original form factor, excellent sound quality and impressive autonomy. It should be understood that the LG Tone + HBS-730 is not suitable for everyone, not least due to the price tag of almost 1000 UAH, but the headphones will definitely find their representative of stylish youth or a brave athlete.
