Seoul, September 3, 2013 - LG Electronics (LG) today introduced new tablet LG G Pad 8.3, which is the latest product in the premium G series. LG G Pad 8.3” is the first gadget in the class of 8 inch tablets, equipped with a Full HD screen, providing users with a unique experience and a wide range of communication options. The official premiere of the tablet will take place next week at IFA 2013 in Berlin. The LG G Pad 8.3 will be another device that will cement LG's position as a leader in advanced mobile devices with its premium G series products.

“In addition to our G-series smartphones, the introduction of the LG G Pad 8.3 tablet will further strengthen our premium lineup, which consists of our most advanced devices,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and Chairman of the Board of LG Electronics Mobile Communications. “The G Pad is another example of how our company delivers devices with unique features that will appeal to users around the world.”

Pocket-sized with powerful battery

Despite the large screen, LG G Pad 8.3 has a slim and elegant shape that allows you to comfortably hold it in one hand. This compactness is a result of LG's study of consumer opinion regarding the optimal size of the tablet.

For all its portability, the LG G Pad 8.3 comes with a powerful 4600 mAh battery, which greatly extends the tablet's battery life, but it is no heavier than a newspaper and weighs only 338 g.

The first Full HD screen in the class of 8-inch tablets

The 8.3” LG G Pad is the first in a class of 8” tablets to feature a Full HD display, a key strength of the G series, including the G Pro and G2 smartphones. The G Pad is equipped with a 1920 x 1200 WUXGA (Widescreen Ultra Extended Graphics Array) display capable of displaying an even larger picture than standard Full HD displays. What's more, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor with 1.7GHz Quad-Core CPU greatly enhances the media viewing experience, allowing users to fully enjoy Full HD content without any loss in quality.

Full compatibility thanks to QPair technology

LG G Pad 8.3 meets the highest requirements for tablet compatibility with other devices, based on improved connectivity between them. Thanks to the unique QPair application, any call or message received on the smartphone will be displayed on the G Pad. This device compatibility is very convenient, as it allows you not to miss an important call or message. Users can easily send responses through LG G Pad 8.3. Very good. Beautifully assembled. Nimble. Clear screen. Chips from LG are very convenient. If there is LG G2 - generally "sweet couple". Lack of LTE- in the presence of smart is not a disadvantage. Lightweight (for its size). In general, the money is worth it, the Ski pleased. See reviews on the Internet for more details - there are many of them. I don’t look at the camera - taking pictures with a tablet is the same as swimming in a sheepskin coat - it’s hard and futile. Although the camera is not bad))))))

The combination of mobility with modern features (thin frame with FullHD + on android). It can be worn in the inner pocket of outerwear (!) despite the fact that it is not very small. Already the iPad Mini can be considered wide for this purpose. That is, you can carry it with you without a bag! And it's just gorgeous.

    1. - Good hardware for the beginning of 2014. All games go without brakes, most on maximum settings. Surfing, watching movies, using the UI - all without a single slowdown. 2. - The display is the strong point of this tablet. Juicy colors, high resolution, a huge margin of brightness. But not without jambs (see below). 3. - Workmanship. There are no further comments here. Everything is clear: no backlash, squeaks, metal + plastic + glass. 4. - Software part. Here programmers from LG did their best. The interface is beautiful and user-friendly. A huge number of nice features (QMemo, QRemote, QPair, QSlide, Miracast, KnockOn and much more). In conjunction with a smartphone in 2012 (LG 4X HD), it works amazingly. 5. - Sound. Frankly, I did not expect that the tablet could do this! Or all my ex pills b

They are, but not many. Scrolling text ripples at speed. The screen is good, but worse than the screen in LG G2 - the white color goes a little "warm", the brightness is slightly lower. Otherwise, a very good car.

In general, we can talk about shortcomings only in comparison with other similar devices, which, in general, do not exist. Yes, a weak battery, but, most importantly, the problem is fixable! For me personally, who uses it in the subway, it’s enough for my eyes (I note that I always use it at maximum brightness, with animated full-hd wallpapers and maximum volume). So, buy external battery at 10000mAh for $100 and do not deny yourself anything, say, on a long trip.
No sim card!? No problem - via wi-fi from the phone (mind you, Nokia on windows phone) Internet works fine anywhere.
You can not put applications on a memory card? I gave my father a tablet on the DR a year ago (similar to a Samsung with a SIM card), spent 5 minutes flashing it .. On you and NTFS, and everything else. For myself personally

    1. - If you climb on forums like w3bsit3-dns.com, you can find references to the so-called. "a blue bar appearing in the outermost row of pixels". Yes, there is such a jamb in my copy. It manifests itself as follows: with a slight heating and high brightness (40% or more), a blue stripe of pixels is visible on a black background. With what it is connected - it is not known. Most tablets of this model suffer from this problem. Although, to be honest, it does not interfere with the use of the tablet at all. In games / movies / surfing it is not visible. You can see it if you just look closely.
    2. - Autonomous work. I do not write "Battery capacity", because. it is capacious enough. It works at maximum loads for about 5 hours, the indicator is not bad, but it can do more! Most likely a software problem. Hope it gets fixed later

The first tablet from LG Electronics, which deserves to be called one of the best. After reading this review, you will find out exactly how it will conquer the market.

Equipment

The complete set of the device can be called standard - microUSB cable, block charger and user manual with warranty.

Design

At first glance, the design of the LG G Pad 8.3 is typical of most modern tablets. Outwardly, it looks like - the same rounded corners, and the display diagonal is essentially the same. Although if you look closely, you notice that the contours are not even, but slightly convex, which gives it its characteristic feature. Yes, and it looks more like an enlarged one. Having examined the LG G Pad 8.3 in detail, the feeling of similarity with any other tablet disappears.

What pleased us with the device was a surprisingly thin bezel around the display, almost like the thickness of the device itself (8.3 mm), which naturally affected the weight (338 g).

The front camera is located on the left above the display. There is also a light sensor.

On the left side face are a dual volume rocker and a power/lock button.

The back side stands out among a number of other tablets with its design and incredibly pleasant tactile sensations.

Faceted parts of a matte plastic case “peep out” at the top and bottom, and an aluminum cover with polishing is installed in the center. The camera is located on the top of the case, and the speakers are placed on the left.

Headset jack, memory card slot, infrared port and microUSB connector with a microphone, respectively, are located on the top and bottom faces.

Display

LG decided to stand out also in size, making a non-standard 8.3-inch display made using IPS technology in the “tablet”. The screen has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels with a density of 273 ppi and an aspect ratio of 16:10. The dots can be seen only by burying your nose in the screen, and at a distance of 20 cm they are not visible at all. Also for protection it is made with protection Corning Gorilla Glass and an oleophobic coating that makes it easy to wipe off any prints.

Over the past year, almost all top-end smartphones from this company have been very, very pleased with good displays. The same trend will hopefully continue among LG tablets. In this case, the device confirmed all expectations. Let's start with the fact that the brightness was enough for us even to work in direct sunlight.

The display stays clean, free of obvious dirt, thanks to the oleophobic coating. Naturally, fingerprints are visible, but they are very easy to erase, and the image remains visible, clear and bright, unlike devices.

The viewing angles are maximum, and the color reproduction causes unreasonable tides of joy and fun. And that's without sarcasm. Indeed, the colors are very juicy, bright, colorful and natural. Viewing images of nature and still life on such a display is uplifting.

The black color is saturated, but it still stands out against the background of the frame. Especially, when the viewing angle deviates, it "fades" and becomes blue-violet.

Ergonomics

The LG G Pad 8.3 is built well. It looks solid, and squeaks are noticeable only with strong pressure. Display and back panel bends only a little. The tablet is very comfortable in the hand, and it can be clasped with one hand.

The on-screen keyboard is accurate and comfortable in both positions.

The sound also leaves a good impression. Many laptops would envy this sound - very clean, balanced and loud enough.

Performance

Fast and accurate operation of the device is provided by the quad-core Krait 300 processor on the Qualcomm APQ8064 Pro Snapdragon 600 chip with a clock frequency of 1.5 GHz.

The graphics adapter GPU Adreno 320 and 2 GB of RAM helps the processor. You can store your data on 16 GB of built-in space, but if it seems a little, you can expand it with a memory card up to 64 GB.

We did not notice any slowdowns or glitches. The system works smoothly, quickly and smoothly, any applications are launched almost at lightning speed, and Full HD playback and gaming happen with a bang!

Interface and software

The device is based operating system Google Android 4.2.2 with proprietary shell from LG similar to that used in . All features are borrowed from the G2, and for those who are new to communicating with LG devices, there is a small visual guide at the end of the desktops.

The tablet, like the flagship, can be unlocked and put to sleep with a double tap on the screen. Directly from the lock screen, you can go to the desired program.

The developers have improved the work with shortcuts on the desktop. Shortcuts can not only be moved, but you can also use them to learn more about applications or delete them. In addition, if you hold down the icon and immediately release it, a purple brush will appear, thanks to which you can change the appearance of the shortcut or double its size.

Supports the creation of guest accounts, for example, for children.

Also worth highlighting is multitasking thanks to the Slide Aside function and the ability to work with several applications at the same time using QSlide. In the first case, you need to “swipe” the application from right to left with a three-finger swipe in order to make it the background. Thus it is possible to work with three applications. To return to full screen mode swipe three fingers from left to right. However, the classic application switching menu has not gone away.

Thanks to the QPair application, you can synchronize your smartphone and tablet to receive messages and incoming calls on your tablet.

Among the useful and interesting applications, it is worth highlighting the Video Editor, Life Square, which saves events from your life, posts, photos and videos from social networks, QRemote, which turns the tablet into a remote control, V3 Mobile 2.0, used to protect data, "Dictionary" , QTranslator, Box, as well as LG Support and Smart World.

Camera

The "tablet" has two cameras - one for video communication, the second for capturing the highlights of your life. Their resolution is 1.3 MP and 5 MP, respectively. The main camera is characterized by normal photo quality, noticeable blurring at long distances and a slight overexposure of well-lit objects or the sky.

The tablet does well with macro photography.

Available modes include Normal, HDR, Panorama, VR Panorama, Burst, Beautiful face”, “Time Machine Snapshot”, “Sport” and “Night”.

Manually, you can set the ISO value, white balance and select the classic color effect as desired.

Photo examples:

The tablet shoots video with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The rollers are different high quality and natural color rendering.

Video example:

Communications

The "tablet" supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0, while wired interfaces use a 3.5 mm jack and a microUSB connector.

Working hours

The device has a lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 4600 mAh, thanks to which the operating time at maximum load is up to 5 hours. In reading mode, the device will “live” for 8 hours. With more moderate use, it will last about two days.

Impression

The LG G Pad 8.3 is superior in many ways to most popular tablets today. In addition to a very interesting design and pleasant tactile sensations, the user expects high performance and clear beautiful picture.

Grown up alternative to Google Nexus 7

The South Korean giant LG has long established itself on the good side in the smartphone market; proof of this is the joint Google the release of the Nexus 5 smartphone (and before that, the Nexus 4). But in the tablet segment, the company's success cannot be called outstanding. In recent years, only a couple of models and one modification have been introduced (Optimus Pad LTE / without LTE, as well as G-Slate for T-Mobile). This year, the Koreans decided on another attempt to take a new place under the sun - LG G Pad 8.3.

Specifications LG G Pad 8.3 (LG V-500)

Many utilities, including CPU-Z, make a mistake in determining the SoC that is used in the tablet, and attribute it to the S4 Pro family. This is due to the illogical nomenclature of Qualcomm single-chip systems: the newer one is taken for (installed, by the way, in the new Nexus 7).

Among the tablets we reviewed, there is only one where a similar resolution is found in a smaller diagonal - the second generation Google Nexus 7. Almost all other Full HD tablets are ten-inch. But for the table, we picked up a couple more "intermediate" devices, to which, in this perspective, our hero can also be counted.

Equipment

In addition to the tablet itself, the box contains instructions with a warranty brochure, network adapter and USB cable.

Design

The appearance of the G Pad is in line with what we expect to see in a tablet of this size. Approximately the same thickness as the Google Nexus 7 (2013) and 12mm wider, the LG tablet remains comfortable to grip in the palm of your hand. portrait orientation- the Korean manufacturer did not lose here.

The front panel contains the manufacturer's logo and the camera lens.

Most of the rear panel is occupied by an aluminum plate, bordered by plastic. A common solution that makes the tablet "expensive" and dilutes the ubiquitous plastic. The peculiarity of the LG tablet is that the plastic surrounds the entire metal panel - the rib and rear inserts form a single part, which has a positive effect on the overall reliability of the design.

On the back side there is a camera lens and stereo speakers. They will be somewhat obscured only if you hold the tablet in landscape orientation with your left hand. The speakers are a lot louder than most tablets, and the sound quality is on par. high level.

On the top edge there is a memory card slot, a 3.5 mm headphone output and, unexpectedly, an infrared port.

On the opposite side, there is a Micro-USB connector in the center and a microphone a little to the side.

On the right side there are mechanical buttons for blocking and changing the volume, which have a short and clear stroke.

In fact, LG can be classified as a newcomer to the tablet market. And the company's engineers designed their third device accordingly: they practically did not experiment, concentrating on build quality. It is at a very high level: we did not find any more or less noticeable backlash or squeaks.

Screen

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, there is very effective anti-reflective filter, which is slightly better than Google Nexus 7 (2013) in terms of reduced reflection brightness (we compare it with it below).

For clarity, here are photos in which a white surface is reflected in the off screens of both tablets:

Due to the difference in the color tone of the reflection, it is difficult to visually judge the amount of decrease in the brightness of the reflection; However, statistics from graphic editor shows that the screen of the LG G Pad 8.3 is slightly darker, but the difference is not statistically significant (average brightness 79.9 vs 80.7). We also note that visually, the screen of the LG G Pad 8.3 in the off state looks a little more cloudy than the screen of the Nexus 7, since the surface of the matrix under the glass on the first one is slightly matte and reflects side light a little more.

The ghosting of reflected objects in the LG G Pad 8.3 screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen. The outer surface of the screen has special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, apparently better than the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much more easily, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control, its maximum value was about 310 cd/m², and the minimum 4 cd/m². The maximum value is not very high, but given the good anti-reflective properties, in bright daylight the image on the screen must be sufficiently well distinguishable. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. Automatic brightness control works according to the light sensor (it is located to the right of the front camera eye). This function depends on the position of the brightness slider. If it is set to 100%, then the screen brightness does not actually change (remains equal to 316-318 cd / m²). If you set the slider to 50%, then in complete darkness, the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 8.5 cd / m² (it is difficult to read from the screen, but still possible), in an office lit by artificial light it sets it to 115 cd / m² (acceptable), and in very bright environments, boosts up to a maximum of 315 cd/m². If the control is set to 0%, then in the first two conditions above, the brightness remains at the minimum value, and only in a very bright environment rises to 303 cd/m². If you set the slider to 75%, then the values are as follows: 33, 170 and 319 cd / m² (perhaps this is the most comfortable set of values). It turns out that adequate operation of this function is provided only at intermediate positions of the slider. At low brightness, there is virtually no backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker.

AT this tablet type matrix is used IPS. Micrographs show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

The screen has good viewing angles without hue inversion and without significant color shift even at large deviations of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen. For comparison, here are photos in which the same images are displayed on the Nexus 7 and LG G Pad 8.3 screens, while the brightness of both screens is set to about 200 cd / m².

Perpendicular to screens:

It can be seen, especially in skin tones, that the color reproduction is slightly different, but this is the only conclusion that can be drawn from the photo.

And the white box:

Now at an angle of approximately 45° to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not “float” on both tablets. Then a white box:

The brightness at an angle for both tablets has noticeably decreased (about four times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of the LG G Pad 8.3, the brightness drop is slightly greater (brightness in photos 224 versus 237 for the Nexus 7). At the same time, the color tone has changed slightly.

The black field, when deviated diagonally, is highlighted strongly and acquires a red-violet hue. A photo from the Nexus 7 for comparison shows this (the brightness of the white areas is the same for both tablets!):

With a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the black field is average, since there are local areas along the screen border with an increased brightness of the black field (bright points are defective pixels on the camera matrix, comparison again with Nexus 7):

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is high - about 960:1 . The gamma curve constructed from 32 points did not reveal a blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows, and the exponent of the approximating power function is 2.46, which is more than the standard value of 2.2, while the real gamma curve strongly deviates from the power dependence:

Due to the aggressive dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness according to the nature of the displayed image (brightness increases on light images, decreases on dark images), the obtained dependence of brightness on hue (gamma curve) does not correspond to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out during sequential output full screen grayscale. For this reason, a number of tests - determining the contrast and response time, comparing black flare at angles - we carried out when displaying special patterns, rather than full-screen solid-color fields.

Color gamut narrower than sRGB:

Apparently, the matrix filters slightly mix the components to each other. The spectra confirm this:

Judging by the coverage graph and the tablet experience, the most recognizable shades - skin tones - do not lose saturation, therefore, in most cases, the colors of images (drawings, photos and films) oriented to the sRGB space (and the vast majority of them) have more or less natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is close to the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered acceptable for a consumer device. At the same time, the variation in ΔE, and especially the color temperature, is small, which also has a positive effect on the visual perception of the color balance. The dark areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance is not of great importance there, and the measurement error of color characteristics at low brightness is large.

The brightness adjustment range of this screen is quite wide., a anti-glare filter is very effective, which allows you to comfortably use the tablet both on a clear day on the street and in complete darkness. At the same time, the user is relieved of the need to manually adjust the brightness, since the corresponding function copes with this task (but you still have to choose the correct position of the brightness slider), in addition to helping to save battery power. The advantages of the screen also include effective oleophobic coating and good color balance. Unfortunately, black stability to gaze deviation from the perpendicular to the screen surface is low and black field uniformity is far from ideal. However, these two shortcomings are somewhat smoothed out by aggressive and non-switchable adjustment, which lowers the brightness of the backlight on dark scenes.

Operating system

LG G Pad 8.3 works under Android control 4.2.2. Testing was carried out on firmware V50010a. In it, only 11.03 of 16 GB are available to the user internal memory. Root-rights in order to improve the situation are not granted.

One has only to turn on the tablet, and it becomes clear that LG's proprietary shell has made a significant contribution to the absorption of internal memory.

Tablet applications can be launched directly from the unlock screen. This process is accompanied by a nice and smoothly running animation.

LG has optimized shortcut management. By hooking one of them, you can remove not only it (as in standard version Android), but also the corresponding application. To do this, just drag the shortcut to the adjacent "About" area. In the window that opens, there will be information about the program and a button to remove it.

If you hold down the shortcut on the desktop, after a while a purple circle with a brush will appear in the corner of its icon. It brings up the icon replacement menu. You can choose from the ones already available, or quickly cut your own from a saved image.

There are some nice additional items in the tablet settings. Smart Screen stays on when the front camera detects a face. Smart Video is paused if a face is not recognized. You can change the font and appearance of the Android panel (at the first start, you can choose the more familiar “white on black” scheme).

Has also undergone changes virtual keyboard. In the LG variant, many characters have been transferred to the letter block, which can be selected by holding down the corresponding button.

Extended list of special features. Users can, for example, invert colors or convert stereo to mono for the headphone jack.

Another interesting feature of the LG G Pad 8.3 is the creation of guest users with the option to choose the active one when unlocked. Guest permissions are limited.

Additional software is also installed on the G Pad. There is a DioDict dictionary available in Play market. Tablet users can download one of the paid dictionaries for free. Second, more interesting program for translators is already exclusive to LG. Quick Translator translates the photographed text, using either the Internet or downloadable dictionaries that must be purchased.

OCR works well within a single line; when a larger piece of text needs to be selected, the result is a largely incoherent set of characters.

There is also its own task manager with a RAM loading widget, which allows you to clear the RAM with one movement.

The built-in notebook has a good set of tools for creating handwritten notes. And by the way, doing this on the G Pad display is easy and pleasant.

The capabilities of the built-in infrared port are implemented using the QuickRemote application. Note the ability to select a remote control template for the device in each room of the house.

In addition to the remote remote control, the manufacturer focuses on several more branded features. G Pad 8.3 understands a three-finger side-swipe gesture - QSlide. open application you can not close it, but simply slide it off the screen with three fingers to the left. And repeat this more than once. If you need to call the application or close it, just perform the opposite gesture, and all pending programs will be displayed as a "ladder". Deferred applications are paused, so you can't "suspend", for example, a game to load a level.

Mini-applications are invoked via the pull-down menu. The user can change their position, size and degree of transparency. The list of mini applications includes a video player, browser, calendar, mail client, note editor, explorer and calculator.

Continues the set of proprietary functions of QPair. This app connects to a smartphone (Android 4.1 and later) via Bluetooth to receive alerts for incoming calls and SMS (with the ability to answer text message). In addition, social network news comes through QPair, QuickMemo notes are synchronized and Wi-Fi tethering is carried out via smartphone to tablet.

In addition to standalone applications, the G Pad has several additional and convenient features. Among them we note:

  • turn on / off the display with two quick touches;
  • viewing the contents of the tablet through a PC connected to the same network;
  • Miracast - output the image and sound of the device to external display;
  • SmartShare Beam - Sharing multimedia content with LG devices;
  • backup of all settings, personal data and applications.

The mentioned software is available in the LG Application Center. In addition, the alternative application store LG Smart World is installed on the device. Turning on the LG G Pad 8.3 takes approximately 25 seconds.

The stability of the system is at a very high level. We did not notice any slowdowns, both in standard Android elements and in LG shell extensions. This aspect of operation will be further tested in the MobileXPRT test.

In addition to the 8064M, the Snapdragon 600 line also includes the 8064T model, which is distinguished by its raised to 1.9 GHz frequency processor.

The competitors we have chosen are quite close to the G Pad in terms of display parameters, but in terms of computing power our hero is noticeably ahead of everyone, with the possible exception of Google Nexus 7 (2013). Let's see what the benchmarks show.

To broaden our horizons in browser tests, we used a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 N9005 powered by Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 800 platform.

JavaScript tests show that the Snapdragon 600 is not far from the S4 Pro. Moreover, in one of the three tests Nexus even won. A much larger gap is fixed between the Snapdragon 600 and 800: Galaxy Note was almost twice as fast.

Starting with this overview, we start using the second Google versions Octane. It has been added new test, which evaluates work with code like asm.js. LG G Pad 8.3 scored in new version benchmark 2138 points.

Let's run complex benchmarks. There is also a replenishment - Antutu X Edition. A special version of the benchmark was a response to the actions of manufacturers, dishonest methods results.

For comparison with Google Nexus 7 (2013), we installed and Antutu Benchmark 3. LG tablet won with a score of 20590:18499. And in Antutu X, by the way, Note 3 N9005 turned out to be only a third faster than our hero.

The final non-gaming benchmarks are SuperPi, Geekbench and MobileXPRT.

In MobileXPRT, the LG G Pad 8.3 was logically inferior to the Galaxy Note 3 N9005 in photo performance, but took revenge in the gesture tests.

Let's move on to gaming benchmarks.

In Epic Citadel, our hero is inferior to the main rival by a couple of frames per second, but bypasses him in the synthetic Ice Storm.

Two times behind the Note 3 and losing to the Nexus 7 (2013) in both tests with real scenes.

In the final, game tests, there is also an update: Dead Trigger 2 has been released, which from now on will replace the first part in our set.

In the Voyo A15 review, we mentioned error 5002 when launching Mass Effect: Infiltrator. She also met us at the G Pad. In the tablet display settings, we chose to adjust the aspect ratio for individual programs, and Mass Effect earned. A pleasant surprise.

In general, the test on real gaming applications was passed by the tablet as "excellent". And, judging by the ease with which he coped with the task, the gaming potential of the G Pad 8.3 will be enough for at least the near future.

Video playback

This tablet supports image and sound output to external device using Micro-USB SlimPort (or Mobility DisplayPort) adapters. For testing, we used the LG IPS237L monitor. When using this monitor and this adapter, output was at 1920×1080 at 60 fps. With the landscape orientation of the tablet, the image is displayed on the monitor screen in landscape orientation, while the image on the monitor is inscribed in the screen boundaries in height (narrow black fields are displayed on the sides) and represents exact copy tablet screen. When the tablet is in portrait orientation, the image on the monitor screen is also displayed in portrait orientation, while the image on the monitor is inscribed in the screen boundaries in height, and wide black fields are displayed on the right and left.

Sound is output via HDMI (in this case, the sounds were heard through the headphones connected to the monitor, since there are no speakers in the monitor itself) and has good quality. Wherein multimedia sounds through the speaker of the tablet itself are not output, and the volume is controlled by the buttons on the tablet case. The tablet connected to the SlimPort adapter is charging (in slow mode), while the SlimPort adapter must be connected to a power source through its Micro-USB connector.

Video output by means of a regular player deserves a special description. To begin with, using a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see "Methodology for testing video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)"), we checked how the video is displayed on the screen of the tablet itself. Screen shots with a shutter speed of 1 s helped determine the nature of the output frames of video files with various parameters: Resolution (1280×720 (720p) and 1920×1080 (1080p) pixels) and frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50, and 60 fps) varied. In tests, we used the MX Player video player in the "Hardware" mode, since the "Hardware +" mode did not work quite correctly. The results are summarized in the table:

Note: If both columns Uniformity and Passes“green” ratings are set, this means that, most likely, when watching movies, artifacts caused by uneven interleaving and dropping frames will either not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect viewing comfort. "Red" marks mark possible problems associated with the playback of the respective files.

According to the criteria for displaying frames, the quality of playing video files on the screen of the tablet itself is good, since frames (or groups of frames) are displayed with a more or less uniform alternation of intervals. In the case of files with 50 and 60 fps, strictly every second frame is skipped, which is not very noticeable. 1080p files at 60 fps cannot be played. When playing video files with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 (1080p) on the tablet screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly across the width of the screen, one to one in pixels, that is, in its original resolution. The range of brightness displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - only a couple of shades in the shadows and in the highlights do not differ in brightness from black and white, respectively.

With a monitor connected via SlimPort, when playing a video with a standard player, the image of the video file is displayed only in landscape orientation, while on the monitor after a while after the start of playback only the picture of the video file is displayed, and on the screen of the tablet only information elements and virtual controls are always displayed. When playing video files with Full HD resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels), the image of the video file itself is displayed on the monitor screen exactly along the border of the screen while maintaining true proportions, and the resolution corresponds to Full HD resolution. The brightness range displayed on the monitor is equal to the standard range of 16-235, that is, all gradations of shades are displayed in the shadows and in the highlights. The results of the monitor output tests are shown in the table above in the "SlimPort" block. The output quality is good, but not perfect. However, there are no complaints about Full HD 24 fps video playback, which means you can watch movies. Note that when using the MX Player, a white bar was displayed on the screen in the area of the on-screen buttons, but in the case of files with 50 and 60 fps, there were very few frame drops.

It turns out that connecting to external monitors, TVs and projectors using the SlimPort adapter can be used for games, watching movies, web browsing and other activities that benefit from a multiple increase in screen size.

Let's evaluate the playback of five standard video files:

Formatcontainer, video, soundMX Video PlayerRegular video player

BDRip 1080pMKV, H.264, 1920x1080, 8000Kbps, AC3plays normally plays normally

LG G Pad supports hardware decoding of tracks in AC3 format. The standard tablet video player has some handy additional features. Being a QSlide application, it can collapse into a custom size window. With one touch, you can take a screenshot, lock the display, select the video size (original, "best fit", or full screen). Broadcast to an external display via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is also available, as well as content transfer via SmartShare Beam.

The peculiarity of the player is to navigate the timeline. If you select a point on it, playback will not start immediately from that point. A thumbnail will appear, which you will need to click to start playing from the selected location.

Wireless support

LG G Pad 8.3 supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4GHz + 5GHz). Judging by the speed, for these purposes, one antenna is installed in the tablet, operating in single-channel mode. Connecting to a tablet external drives not supported.

cameras

The LG G Pad 8.3 has two cameras on board. The front one takes pictures at a maximum resolution of 1280 × 800 and hardly claims anything in terms of quality:

The maximum resolution for rear camera shots is 2560×1920. The quality of her pictures can be assessed as quite good.

The text is processed by the rear camera slightly unevenly, but, in general, it is good.

The video (1920×1080, MPEG-4 (Base Media), 29.535 fps, 16.7 Mbps) taken with the tablet pleased us more than the photo. The reason, perhaps, is a very decent bitrate for tablet cameras.

The camera app has several additional features. Among them, it is worth highlighting Cheese Shutter - triggering the camera “by ear”, when one of five keywords. You can assign a photo or zoom to the volume buttons. Finally, several shutter sounds are available.

Offline work

The LG G Pad 8.3 has a 4600 mAh battery.

In the settings, you can enable the launch of energy-saving mode at 30% battery charge. Alas, this option does not optimize consumption, but simply disables wireless networks, limit the brightness and shorten the time automatic shutdown screen. Tests battery life carried out without it.

Here we were somewhat disappointed. The battery life of the LG G Pad 8.3 is significantly shorter than that of the Nexus 7, and the difference in display size cannot be attributed to this. Android reports show that more than usual when draining battery, the device's display takes over. This is indirectly proven by the game mode, where the G Pad still caught up with the Nexus: here the display consumes relatively the least amount of energy.

LG G Pad 8.3 can charge from a PC, but there is a good chance that when connected via USB 2.0, it will give a notification about slow charging due to low current. Charging time from the included adapter is just over four hours.

conclusions

The LG G Pad 8.3 tablet can be safely recommended as an alternative to the Google Nexus 7 if the diagonal size of the Asus device seems small. True, with a caveat about battery life, which is the weak point of our hero. Otherwise - complete order: stable working android version 4.2.2, successfully extended by the manufacturer, high-quality assembly and nice design, excellent compatibility with games, as well as a very good display. While it's not without some drawbacks, it does have the added benefit of a sensor that handles handwriting with ease.

The starting price of LG G Pad 8.3 in Russia is 13,990 rubles. Taking into account the current value new Google Nexus 7, we cannot add such an amount to the advantages of a tablet.

LG G Pad 8.3 is the manufacturer's first tablet on the Ukrainian market. In order to declare itself as a serious player, LG tried to invest in the device all available on this moment technical developments, including a powerful hardware platform, a Full HD IPS display and stereo speakers, seasoned with such software chips as "Knock-Knock" - turn on / off the screen by double tapping on it, multi-window application mode, wide customization options interface and so on. The recommended cost of the 16 GB version without 3G for online stores is 2999 hryvnia ($366). Tempting, but is it enough to call the tablet a balanced device? We had several weeks to resolve this issue.

Complete with the device, the user will find a charging adapter and a USB cable - a necessary minimum.

Design and ergonomics

The tablet that came to us for testing has a white body color. On sale there is a second option - with a black case. In our case, the aluminum insert on the back of the case is unpainted aluminum, while in the black version it is painted in color.

The tablet in question has thin bezels on the sides of the display, which makes its dimensions comparable to models equipped with smaller diagonal screens. The LG G Pad weighs 338 grams, which is also relatively light. We offer you to take a look at the comparative table, which shows the most popular tablets with the same diagonal according to the Hotline website. As a separate example, asus tablet Nexus 7 2013.

The front of the case is protected tempered glass. Above the display, if you hold the device by the narrow sides, there is the manufacturer's logo, front camera and light sensor. The control keys have been moved to the display. The side frame adjacent to the glass protrudes slightly above it.

At the bottom there is a hole for a single microphone and a Micro-USB connector. The left side is empty. On the right there are two metal keys: the one closer to the end is responsible for turning on / blocking, the one that is lower is the volume control. Most of the elements are on the top end. There is a headphone jack, a memory card slot covered with a hard plastic cover and a small eye for an infrared transmitter.

Except for the ends where the antennas are located wireless modules, most of the back side is made of aluminum. The use of metal makes the body stronger. There are no complaints about the quality of materials and fitting parts. On the back of the case there are two speakers and a main camera lens.

Using the tablet is convenient, although the location of the speakers can be called controversial. If you hold the tablet horizontally, the sound does not reflect from your hands, you have to intercept the case. There is no such problem in portrait orientation. Another design feature is the location of the headphone jack. Whether you're watching a movie or playing a game with headphones on, the plug gets in the way of a comfortable grip. If you turn the tablet on the other side, then the metal keys protruding above the surface of the case will cause discomfort.

Operating system and shell

The tablet runs Android 4.2 with Optimus UI 3.0 proprietary shell installed on top. You can compare the capabilities of the shell with the one used in the flagship smartphone LG G2. The lock screen has standard features for Android 4.2. At the top or on the left side of the screen, depending on the orientation, there is a field with widgets. At the bottom of the screen or on its right side, there are five shortcuts for quick launch applications. There are five screen unlock effects, the ability to display weather data on the lock screen.

The desktop also has a wide range of personalization options, ranging from window swipe effects to appearance icons.

The control panel is typically smartphone - the entire width of the screen. Here, as in all LG smartphones, you can configure which of the icons will be displayed and in what order, as well as adjust the brightness of the display and sound. From here you can go to the settings menu.

Among the functions that are not typical for tablets, we note “Knock-knock” - turning the screen on and off, eye tracking to turn off the display or pause when watching a video, Slide Aside - minimizing applications to the background, for their further activation and changing the location, number and background of touch keys. QPair application for connecting a smartphone with a tablet, which allows you to synchronize data about visited sites between devices, duplicate SMS, notifications from social networks and report incoming calls. It should be noted the presence of QSlide-applications - applications that can run on top of others. Users who like to watch videos on a tablet should like the functionality of the built-in player and support for all popular audio and video codecs.

Hardware platform

The tablet is based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chip with four 1.7 GHz processor cores, an Adreno 320 graphics accelerator, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB permanent memory which can be expanded with memory cards.

Tablet performance on par with Asus Nexus 7 2013. Somewhere above, somewhere below. The user is unlikely to feel a lack of performance, but he will be able to notice the jamming characteristic of devices on non-bare Android. There is no escape from this.

There are no complaints about the work of GPS, Wi-Fi. The speed of determining satellites is one of the best, the data transfer rate in the Wi-Fi network is average, which is enough for any possible task, including broadcasting streaming video to the big screen.

The volume and sound quality of the speakers is good. Music lovers will not be disappointed either: the sound is not bad, including in headphones.

The autonomy of the tablet depends on what you will use. At maximum load, the tablet lasted three and a half hours, discharged from 100% percent to 20%. The results of the two-hour tests can be seen below. With typical use of an hour of browsing and an hour of gaming per day, the tablet lasts three to four days. If you add here the viewing of one movie per day, the operating time will be reduced to two days.

Display

The 8.3-inch IPS-matrix has wide viewing angles, a color gamut close to sRGB and a white balance corresponding to a temperature of 6500 K. The display brightness is adjustable from 5 cd/m2 to 265 cd/m2. With not the highest brightness on a sunny day, the anti-reflective layer successfully resists, although in fairness it should be said that the maximum brightness could be higher. The contrast is 720:1.

cameras

The main camera of the tablet received a matrix with 5 MP resolution, front - 1.3 MP. The viewfinder interface, along with the camera capabilities, is carried over from the LG G2. There are various shooting modes, the ability to manually focus and select ISO, exposure, on-timer, shooting by voice commands or pressing the volume keys, and so on. The maximum video resolution is 1920x1080 pixels for the main camera and 1280x720 pixels for the front camera. The video quality is good, but nothing more. The main claim to the sound. When recording in noisy places, the sound merges into one stream, as a result of which it becomes impossible to disassemble its individual parts.
