An example of such a sheet replacement was discussed in the article pdf editing files using Foxit PDF Editor.

Let's look at rotating a sheet in a pdf file using a specific example. We have a pdf file consisting of two sheets, the first sheet in portrait orientation, the second in landscape orientation. Let's try to rotate the landscape sheet in the pdf file and make all the sheets in portrait orientation. Opening our file, we will see the following:

To rotate a page in a pdf file you need to do just one action. Go to the menu "Document" and select the item "Turn of pages...".

In the window that appears "Turning Pages" can be produced detailed settings. To begin with, we indicate in the column "Direction" the direction of rotation of the sheet, clockwise, counterclockwise or even 180 degrees. Specify the range of pages to which it will be applied this action. In our case, we will put the page number that needs to be expanded in the pdf file. You can also choose to apply the rotation to all sheets, even or odd sheets only. You can also specify that rotation be applied to sheets only with landscape or portrait orientation. After clicking “Ok” the action will be applied immediately and the file can be saved.

What is PDF?

When one format does not work well with another, there is an incompatibility problem. Attempts of various kinds of universalization are constantly being made. Perhaps the most famous universal document distribution format is PDF. The abbreviation PDF stands for “Portable Document Format”, translated into Russian as a portable document format. Developed by Adobe about 15 years ago, the format is considered a global standard in the field of replication and exchange of reliably protected electronic documents. The PDF format received official recognition only last year, and, admittedly, it is not widely used in all areas of document management. Most often, the PDF format makes itself known in publishing and printing. IN this format Usually most technical documentation, books and magazines, etc. are distributed. Often, all this has its own specific price, along with paper products, and is sold in online stores.

Let's try to figure out what was the reason for the distribution and widespread use of documents in this format - not only in publishing, but also on the Internet. Adobe files PDFs are relatively small in size, partly due to the clear distribution of data, which can be a huge accumulation in a single document. In addition, the format supports several types of raster information compression, and storing images in PDF is ultimately more profitable than storing images outside the document. The result is that the format is optimal for sending by E-mail and posting on Internet resources.

Adobe itself talks about the following advantages of its format:

Multiplatform- today the PDF format can be viewed without problems using the operating system or using third party programs. In addition, you can open PDF on Android. The list of supported platforms includes Windows, Mac OS, UNIX, Palm OS, Symbian, Pocket PC. When you open a file, its formatting is preserved, regardless of the application used and regardless of the program in which the document was created. True, at low resolution the formatting is usually significantly distorted. The format is optimal for printing.

Wide use- According to Adobe, more than 1,800 vendors have included some form of PDF support in software. A well-known example is all popular browsers ( Internet Explorer,Opera, Mozilla Firefox) with additions are able to open PDF documents in their window.

Reliability- More than 250 million PDF documents on the Internet, including government and business resources, store information in this format. This fact alone speaks volumes. (These figures, again, are named by Adobe. Where such statistics were obtained is unknown).

Greater integration- PDF files contain original information, such as text, raster images (drawings, graphs), multimedia objects, 3D, maps - all in the original format. Fonts are integrated into the document, so even if they are not included in operating system, then they will be displayed correctly.

Safety- support for certificates and the ability to create a security password for any PDF document. In addition, the format includes a mechanism electronic signatures to protect and verify the authenticity of documents.

Search ability- due to the fact that the text content of a PDF document is usually separated from the graphic content, a search within the document is provided. By the way, search engine Google system) indexes and searches text on request in PDF pages.

Availability- PDF documents are readable by disabled people. True, complex formatting makes viewing difficult, and therefore the “accessibility” criterion is very relative. Moreover, much depends on the capabilities of the software used.

It’s one thing, of course, to believe words and facts; it’s another thing to see it from a user’s point of view, to check how it works. We will not list the other advantages, of which there are many, but will try to figure out how you can organize PDF viewing in popular and not so popular programs. Next, we will look at programs that will help you handle this format.

Format XPS - the new universal document standard?

Microsoft pleasantly surprised users Windows Vista the newly introduced XPS (XML Paper Specification) format. This open format, available at free license. IN this moment XPS supported by 2007 package Microsoft Office System and there is talk about standardizing the format in the European organization ECMA (European Computer Manufacturers Association) on a par with PDF.

An XPS file contains page-by-page content displayed on the screen. This ensures that the document is printed correctly - while maintaining formatting. XPS supports various security standards and is based on XML language. Another tangible advantage of the format is that it can be opened as an archive in which everything is sorted into folders: formatting and markup elements, graphics (vector graphics support is available). Compression is applied to XPS documents.

It sounds tempting, but it is not yet entirely clear when the format developed by Microsoft will become widely used, and whether this will happen at all. So far, developers are not trying to include XPS in the list of supported documents, and users know absolutely nothing about the format. You can use it with confidence only on computers on Windows based Vista, for other OS Windows family you need to download and install the add-on from www.microsoft.com.

As for the popular Microsoft Office 2007 package, viewing XPS also requires the installation of a special add-on. Details can be found here. By the way, the same applies to PDF, which Office does not natively support. Most likely, formats such as PDF, XPS and ODF will be included in Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 2, scheduled for release in the second half of 2009.

Why Adobe Reader without Acrobat?

It has long been customary to call the Adobe Reader program Acrobat Reader. But this tradition will be broken today, since now the name Acrobat Reader refers to a program for editing (!) PDF documents. In view of this, the distribution kit with the program takes several tens of times more than Reader.

Thus: Adobe Reader is a program for viewing PDF documents, Adobe Acrobat Reader - for editing.

Why Acrobat 9?

The program interface is improving - this is obvious. However, Adobe Reader progresses from version to version in such a way that the changes are difficult to notice at first glance. In our opinion, first of all, it is necessary to highlight the following features compared to previous versions:

  • Increased startup speed.
  • Adobe Reader 9 MUI (multilingual interface). However, you need to download the version in your language, since you cannot change the language through the program interface.
  • Increased security.

Where can I download?

It is available at: The size of the program is about 25 MB, which is not very much for a download. Additionally, the program includes the AIR complex (modern technology for developing web applications). At the moment, version 9.1 is available for download from the site, but after launching the program, you will be prompted to download a newer version. This is not so important: the differences between these versions are not very significant. If you need a special version, it is easier to download it through the page. Here you can also select the Russian version of the program for downloading. Previous versions of Reader (7–8) are also available, but there is practically no point in downloading them.

What other versions of Adobe Reader are there?

As already mentioned, the regular Adobe Reader program is completely free (otherwise today's material would not be here). In addition to the free one, there are three more versions of the package - Standard at a price of $299, Pro – $449 and Pro Extended – $699. There is no need to write in detail about the differences between versions. The higher the price, the closer Reader comes to its older brother Adobe Reader in functionality. If you are interested in the functional features of each version, visit the page. But it is unlikely that a full-time user will need anything more than just viewing PDF documents.

Will Reader launch for me?

From version to version system requirements The programs differ for operation, but not much. For Reader 9 they sound like this:

  • Microsoft® Windows® XP Home, Professional or Tablet PC Edition with Service Pack 2 or 3 (32-bit or 64-bit); Windows Server® 2003 (with Service Pack 2 for 64-bit version); or Windows Vista® Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate or Enterprise with or without Service Pack 1 (32-bit or 64-bit), and Microsoft® Windows® 2000 with Service Pack 4.
  • Processor with clock frequency 1.3 GHz and higher
  • RAM 128 MB (256 MB recommended)
  • 335 MB of free hard disk space (note: the program creates temporary files during installation, so the required free hard disk space exceeds the specified value)
  • Screen resolution 800? 600
  • Hardware video acceleration (optional)
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, 6.0 with Service Pack 1, 7.0 or 8.0; Firefox 2.0 or 3.0

However, it is not at all necessary to observe the last point. You will only need a browser if you want to go to the developers' website.

MacOS, Linux, and Solaris have their own versions of Adobe Reader. There are portable versions for Palm OS, Pocket PC and Symbian OS. In general, Reader works on 23 (!) platforms and 33 languages.

How to speed up the launch?

IN latest version Reader's cold start speed has increased. However, Adobe Reader is a fairly resource-intensive application. On insufficiently powerful machines, the program tends to slow down: both at startup and while viewing a document. How to change the situation for the better?

The first option is to install another PDF viewer, of which there are many. Foxit PDF, etc.

But if you don’t want to change Reader, you can use the small Adobe Reader SpeedUp utility. With its help it is easy to disable unnecessary Adobe modules Reader, which you will not use and disabling which will not have a negative impact. True, the performance increase in the latest version of Reader is not very significant. Why? IN previous versions Adobe Reader had quite a few initially working modules. In Reader 9, the developers tweaked Reader and removed unnecessary modules from the launcher.

An alternative way to get rid of modules is manual removal. Only in this case you need to be careful and be sure to do backup copy files. So, we find the folder with installed by Adobe Reader (by default \Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\) and open the plug_ins folder. Files with the API extension can be moved to any temporary folder. Now launch Reader. If the program works flawlessly, delete the temporary folder immediately.

How to make reading more comfortable for the eyes?

There are some simple tips on this matter.

Don't forget about the full-screen reading mode (see hotkeys below). When you press Ctrl + H, automatic scrolling of the document is activated, but, subjectively, with large volumes of text, such “dynamic” reading tires the eyes.

PDF documents look best at their original scale. Especially when it comes to single-layer files, it is undoubtedly better to use a scale of 100%: in this case, the fonts will not be distorted.

The main display options are concentrated in the Page View section. Carefully examine the Rendering section and adjust the optimal anti-aliasing for viewing documents. It is worth noting that best quality Anti-aliasing is provided by the For portable devices/LCD monitors option. Below there are other settings, but they no longer concern fonts. See Improve fine lines and more.

If you are viewing documents on a widescreen monitor with a large diagonal (19 inches or more), it makes sense to display two pages at once on one screen. The command View - Page View - Paired is intended for this purpose. Also don't forget about function keys F8 and F9. They are designed to hide unnecessary panels. When you click again, these panels will be easy to return.

The rearrangement of the document deserves special attention.

What is PDF Reflow?

Reflowing a document is displaying it as a single column with a width equal to the document panel. Sometimes this can make the document easier to read. This applies to cases where the structure of the document is too difficult to understand.

Reflow is performed on the main text of the file. It does not affect forms, comments, digital signature fields, page numbers and footers. Pages with form fields or digital signatures are not reflowed.

To reflow, select View - Zoom - Reflow from the menu.

Why can't I save changes to a PDF document?

Even if you use one of paid versions Reader, when changing a file (adding notes, comments, etc.), in many cases it will be prohibited from saving a modified copy of the document. Why? In this way, the owners (copyright holders) of the PDF file protect their files from unauthorized copying.

Why can't I select and copy text?

Text in some PDF documents cannot be copied to the clipboard. It's a shame, but unfortunately, this cannot be corrected. There are many reasons for this. Here are some of them.

First, the document you opened could have simply been scanned. In this case, each page represents a single image. Secondly, this could be done intentionally - to prohibit copying of text or to protect against indexing by search engines (see question below).

However, even from such pages you can “pull” text. As a tool, you can use a text recognition program. The most famous is FineReader, which has some not very competitive analogues in the form of web services that recognize online text. The likelihood of successful text recognition depends on how clearly the text is displayed in the document.

Is there any point in publishing PDFs online?

A very interesting and relevant question for website owners. Is it worth publishing PDF files along with HTML documents? Will the text of the document be searchable? In other words, will search engines index it? There are many questions, and the answer to them can be answered with confidence: yes. PDF documents with a text layer will be correctly recognized and indexed by search engines. At least the most famous Western and Russian-language search engines they do it great.

On the other hand, if possible, it is better to save pages in HTML format due to the fact that it is more convenient to edit text in HTML.

How to remove Bonjour

Now let's talk about an unpleasant feature of the entire Adobe line. True, for Adobe Reader version 9 the problem is not relevant, but in the 8th version it occurs.
It's all about the service beautiful name Bonjour, which installs and works together with other software from Adobe. The Internet says that "Bonjour software allows computers and others network devices automatically detect resources, computers, devices and services available on the network, without requiring you to specify additional parameters - for example, IP address or DNS server."

Automatic updating works “on its own”, without user permission. As soon as you launch Adobe Reader 8 and work in it, something immediately starts downloading.

You can remove this service in the following way.

Open the command console (Win+R, type cmd and press Enter. Run two commands:

sc stop “Bonjour Service”
sc delete “Bonjour Service”

Thus, we stopped and deleted the service.

Then download the LSP -fix program. After launching it, check the I know what i`m doing... option (I know what I'm doing). Below is a list of various files. Select mdnsnsp.dll and move it to the right side. Click Finish and restart your computer. And finally, delete the Program Files\Bonjour\ folder.
