Libreoffice pdf editing. Extensions

Enhance the functionality of LibreOffice with extensions

You can further increase the functionality of LibreOffice with extensions (visit LibrePlanet to download)

Extensions are software modules that you can install in addition to the standard LibreOffice configuration and add additional functionality to one of the applications (Writer , Calc, Impress , ...) or all applications together.

Note that in LibreOffice 3.3 there are many more extensions that previously had to be downloaded separately, but now they are included in the standard package.

  • PDF Import: The PDF Import extension allows you to import and modify PDF documents. Results with 100% formatting accuracy can be achieved using the "PDF/ODF hybrid file" format, which is also included in this extension. A hybrid PDF/ODF file is a PDF file that contains an embedded original ODF file. Hybrid PDF/ODF files will open as an ODF file in LibreOffice without changing the structure.
  • Presentation Minimizer: The Presentation Minimizer extension reduces the size of the current presentation. Images are compressed and redundant data is removed. The quality image size can be minimized. Screen and projector presentations do not require the same quality as print presentations and can be optimized. Linked and Embedded Objects (OLE) are useful at the design stage, but can be twice the size of regular images. Presentation Minimizer can replace OLE objects with images without quality loss. In addition, Presentation Minimizer can remove notes and hidden speaker slides so you don't accidentally post. confidential information. The wizard summarizes all the changes that need to be made to the presentation and also evaluates the savings in file size. Presentation Minimizer also works with Microsoft PowerPoint presentations.
  • Presenter Console: The Presenter Console extension gives you more control over slideshow presentations, allowing you to see the upcoming slide, slide notes, and presentation timer, while the audience only sees the current slide. You can use three views: the first view displays the current slide, including effects and the upcoming slide; the second view shows the speaker's notes in scalable font, along with the current and upcoming slide, the third view shows the slide sorter with thumbnails.
  • ReportBuilder: used to create beautiful database reports. The flexible report editor allows you to define general and page-by-page settings for headers and footers, and you can also include calculated fields for complex reports. Using it with databases, you can create reports for HSQL, Oracle, and just about any other database.
  • Non Linear Solver: By default, Calc comes with a solver only for linear programming. This optimizes the models to a certain extent. However, with more complex formulas or constraints, non-linear programming is required. This gap is currently filled by the "Nonlinear Programming Solver" extension. It currently includes two evolutionary algorithms that can handle floating point and integer variables as well as non-linear constraints.
  • Wiki Publisher: The Wiki Publisher extension allows you to create Wiki articles on MediaWiki servers without having to know the MediaWiki markup language. You can publish new and existing documents to wiki pages transparently using Writer. Wiki Publisher supports essential text attributes such as titles, links, and lists, as well as simple tables. Images are also supported if they are already uploaded to the wiki. Automatic image upload is not currently supported. This is the ideal extension if you want to make existing documentation and specifications available on MediaWiki servers. Simply upload a document and run the extension via the "Submit - MediaWiki Server" command. A dialog box will guide you through the publishing process.

If you develop extensions and would like them to become one of the standard LibreOffice features please contact our developers via IRC, on the #libreoffice channel on the server

PDF is the most popular document format. This is the main type of file in which certificates, forms, product descriptions and user manuals for them, as well as books are published. To read PDF files you need separate application, which will be able to correctly display pages for review ( full list programs). But sometimes it is not enough just to read and familiarize yourself with the contents of the file, you must definitely make some changes, correct errors or inaccuracies. For these cases, other programs will be needed, which we will discuss.

For example, the user's task is to fix a newly created PDF file that has been converted to given format, say, from a web page downloaded from some site. The same Adobe / Acrobat Reader is unlikely to erase the erroneous text or replace the wrong picture - versions of this application work only as a “reader”, and not a PDF text editor.

Unless you have very limited space internal memory laptop or gadget, i.e. If you allow yourself to install programs for serious remote work, then try, for example, Microsoft Word. So, for Android in general, the use of this program is free, but requires Account on the Microsoft server. The computer version of Word is paid.

In addition to this there is useful program Adobe Acrobat which allows you to edit pdf files on the computer. It has rich functionality, but, unfortunately, it is paid and not all users can afford it. However, it has a free trial period that you can use if you need to change the file for the first and last time. For more information on how to find the program and how to use it, see the video.

Fortunately, if free analogues that will help in solving this problem and they are no less effective.

Working with PDF Documents in Microsoft Office

Editing PDF Documents Supported word processor Microsoft Word since 2013. In all versions, the process is approximately the same, but in this case, the option of working with the 2016 version of Word is considered.

The modified document was successfully saved.

Despite the paid Microsoft Office, the basic functions of input / output of text / graphic content are available in it. LibreOffice is perfect for those who like to simplify and speed up everything. If you like working with documents on a tablet, apart from Microsoft Word, the OpenOffice package and several other similar applications will suit you for Android.

LibreOffice is, as you know, a cross-platform package of so-called open source office applications. source code, which, in addition to being free, is also very similar to MS Office.

Moreover, to such an extent that in LibreOffice you can edit not only tables MS Excel and documents MS Word. And not only MS, and not only edit.

As it was established just now during a small event to blitz test a new Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro, which to normal Windows versions 10, they also immediately installed the LibreOffice package, in which you can also create, save and edit even docks in PDF format. Which, of course, is also convenient.

In LibreOffice, this feature, by the way, is provided by default as one of the regular functions of the Draw application. This is where all PDF files open.

That is, you can simply start Draw, then open the menu " File” and from it - the desired document in PDF. Or, in the OS settings, immediately specify LibreOffice as a program for working with this format, after which they will open automatically in Draw.

How fast depends on the volume source file. Draw opens a PDF with a couple of pages almost instantly, but before opening a book of several hundred pages, of course, it will seriously “think” (sometimes for a minute, or even longer). new document you can start right away in PDF, and without Draw. To do this, in the menu " File » click « Export to PDF «.

LibreOffice Draw displays the pages of an open PDF file in a separate panel on the left side of the screen, the content of the selected page is displayed in the main editor window.

Displays mostly well, but sometimes it happens that the markup and / or fonts “slide”. And this is not very pleasant also because LibreOffice cannot save such a file, which means that there is no point in editing it.

But if the document opened normally, then it is also edited normally: you can make edits to the text, delete characters, and even insert pictures and tables. The edited file must also be saved through the function " Export to PDF ". And if it didn’t work out, then in extreme cases you can save it in the ODG format (in LibreOffice Draw it is used by default).

Before saving the file in the "PDF Options" window, you can, in particular, set the level of image compression, encrypt the file, set permissions for it, add a digital signature, add watermarks, and much more.

The PDF format is one of the most common standards for the distribution of books, instructions for various equipment, tickets, vouchers and other documents that require a combination of text, images, support for page transitions and other features. main goal Adobe, which developed this standard, was to create a display format for documentation that would look absolutely identical when opened on any computer or other device. For the most part, this has been achieved. Files, if available installed program to view this format, easily open on any device.

However, if you need to edit the file, problems usually arise. PDF viewers are not editors. In this case, you have to resort to other methods. Consider the main features that exist today for editing this type of file.

The main tool for creating and editing PDF is Adobe Acrobat, which is developed directly by Adobe, the creator of this format.

It has excellent functionality and ease of use. To edit a PDF file, you first need to launch this program, then open the file from the program's main menu. Then you can start editing. Adobe Acrobat includes a wide range of tools.

In the file, you can change almost all objects - text, images, graphic objects. To edit images, Adobe Acrobat can use third party programgraphics editor. The best choice would be to use another Adobe development - Photoshop programs. To get it, use the "Advanced Editing" from the "Tools" panel.

If you need to change the order of pages in a document, use the Pages menu available from the Navigation Pane. In this case, pages can be changed in any order, simply by dragging them with the mouse.

To edit text in PDF document you should use the corresponding "Change text" menu. Click on the desired piece of text and edit it.

The following advantages of Adobe Acrobat can be distinguished:

  1. A wide range of editing tools.
  2. Constant improvements and updates from the company that created the PDF format.
  3. Stability and availability of versions for all major operating systems.

Beyond Editing this program has the ability to convert other types of files (doc, html and others) to a PDF file, as well as a number of other useful features.

Among the shortcomings, perhaps, one can be noted, but quite significant. This program is paid and the cost of the license is relatively high.

Video - How to edit a PDF file

libreoffice

One of the alternatives for editing PDF is the well-known office suite libreoffice. Despite the fact that its main purpose is editing text documents and working with tables, LibreOffice has the ability to change the content of the PDF format.

On a note! This software package is distributed free of charge. You can download it from the official website of the developer.

After installing the program, you can use it for opening and basic editing operations. After starting, select the "Open File" command, select the PDF on your hard drive and open it. After opening the file, it is possible to edit it, almost like Text Document. You can change the font, adjust the text. Basic operations are also available for other document objects. The program allows you to remove and add images, add links, completely change the formatting of the document. To save changes made to documents, you need to select the "Export to PDF" command. Using the "Save" command will convert the document to the internal format of the LibreOffice package.

With LibreOffice, you can also protect the output PDF file, preventing it from being edited or opened. Users who do not have a special password in the first case will be able to view the contents of the document, but will not be able to make any changes to it. In the second case, only users with a special key will be able to open the document.

Editing with online services

There are quite a lot of resources on the Internet where users are offered the opportunity to edit PDF files online. Some of them are paid, but there are also many sites where you can do it for free.

Among these services are:

  • pdfescape.com;
  • pdf2go.com;
  • smallpdf.com;
  • pdfzorro.com.

To edit a PDF, go to the site, select the appropriate section and download the original file from hard drive to the server. Then it becomes available for editing using the tools that are available on this resource. In most cases, the list is rather limited. You can perform only the simplest operations - delete text, symbols, images. So far, no online service has the ability to edit text.

Instead, if you need to change a text fragment, you can delete the old one (using the Whiteout tool for this), and then create a new text fragment (Text tool). In this case, it is very difficult to choose a font that matches the main document. Such proofreading sections of the text stand out strongly and are immediately noticeable. To get the edited file, you need to save it and download it to your computer.

On a note! Online services can be recommended for operational simple - documents that do not have complex formatting.

There are several ways to edit a file PDF format on a computer The main criterion by which the user can decide on a particular method are the goals, complexity and volume of editing. If you need to make small changes to multiple documents, you can use free online services or free programs. When you need to perform complex editing of documents, in large volumes and quantities, it is better to stop at powerful specialized solutions specially designed for this.

Portable Document Format (PDF) is used to provide documents in a static form without the possibility of editing. However, PDF supports embedding fillable forms. LibreOffice includes standard means to create similar PDF files.

1. Open LibreOffice Writer and create a new document.

2. Go to "View → Toolbars → Controls" and turn on the panel "Controls".

You should see something like this:

This panel allows you to add various form fields to your document.

3. Now select any of the form elements (for example, "Text field") and pressing the left mouse button, stretch it to the desired size.

4. Double-click the text field with the left mouse button.

A control window will appear where you can edit the text field metadata (size, formatting, etc.) or add an event.

Other form elements are added and configured in a similar way.

5. After placing the necessary elements, go to "File → Export to PDF". Check the box in the export menu "Create PDF Form". Any format can be used as the transfer format. The most commonly used format FDF.

Click the button "Export" and choose a location to save the finished PDF form. Open the resulting PDF file in a PDF viewer and you will see all the form fields in the document. Fill in the fields and save the PDF document. When reopening, the completed data will remain intact.

P.S. When filling out forms in a regular PDF viewer, I had a problem with Cyrillic, the text in Russian was not displayed. After some inquiries, it turned out that this was a problem with a particular PDF viewer. Keep in mind. Therefore, in the last screenshot you can see that I used a browser as a viewer Google Chrome, but Mozilla Fierfox reads PDF files, but does not support filling out forms.
