Balanced budget device with basic characteristics

Huawei has recently embarked on a major expansion model range tablets. Devices with the same name are actively produced in different display diagonals. As a rule, their characteristics are maintained at basic level, and only the Mediapad X series is a pleasant exception. In this article we will get acquainted with one of the most, if not the most budget-friendly new product - a seven-inch Huawei version Mediapad T1, presented at MWC 2015.

What sets Huawei's new product apart from its competitors is the use of an SoC from a little-known manufacturer. However, it still contains the same low-frequency Cortex-A7 cores, and you shouldn’t expect any surprises.

Design

We had the opportunity to study the tablet long before its premiere on the Russian market, so the device was accompanied only by a white envelope. Let's move on to the external inspection.

In terms of its dimensions, the Mediapad T1 7.0 is similar to other ultra-budget models. Reducing the thickness by a millimeter does not change the weather. In general, in the class of seven-inch tablets, devices with a slightly different form factor have recently become popular, with an aspect ratio of 16:9 (for example, Wexler Mobi 7 LTE). They are smaller in width, making them more comfortable to hold in the hand. 1024×600 matrices have a place only in the cheapest devices, and even then, most likely, only due to the attractive price for the manufacturer.

The tablet's only speaker comes out through a small slot above the display. It's a little off to the side front-camera, and between them - led indicator, notifying both charging status and notifications.

On the back, the Mediapad T1 7.0 is very similar to the Mediapad X1, which we talked about a year ago: the same metal plate in the middle with rectangular plastic inserts along the edges. But in small details there are discrepancies not in favor of the current hero. The T1 has thin strips of plastic between the metal plate and the display. They are fitted with a different gap on each side, and this, of course, does not add points to Huawei’s score.

Metal plate here as in others mobile devices ah, very sensitive to scratches. And the grip on the palm is also insufficient. In this case, the Mediapad X1 again looks more thoughtful, with its side edges located at right angles to the rear panel. This allows you to hold the device more securely.

The camera lens is located at the top in the corner, and above it to the side is a headset jack. The plastic surfaces have fine texturing, which can be seen in the photo.

Opposite we see a Micro-USB port and a microphone hole.

It would be better to place the mechanical buttons a little lower, but to use them you have to hold the tablet in your palm. No other shortcomings were noticed: the stroke is short and clear, the shape is comfortable.

Hidden under a flap next to the buttons are spring-loaded Micro-SIM and microSD slots with labels and guide icons.

Only fans of light colors can distinguish the Mediapad T1 7.0 from the crowd of ultra-budget tablets - a dark palette is usually chosen for devices in this price segment. There are no other significant differences observed here. We would characterize the build quality of the Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 as very good, if not for the notorious gaps on the sides. However, for a budget tablet this is quite forgivable.

Screen

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is scratch-resistant. Judging by the brightness of reflected objects, The anti-glare properties of the screen are better than Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photograph in which a white surface is reflected in the switched off screens of both tablets (Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 is on the right, and in all the following comparative photographs the tested tablet is located above the Nexus 7):

The screen of the Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 is slightly darker than that of the Nexus 7 (brightness in photographs is 101 versus 113 for the Nexus 7) and, judging by the tint of the reflection, equipped with some kind of anti-reflective coating. The tripling of reflected objects in the Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 screen is very weak, this indicates that there is no air gap between the outer glass (also known as the touch sensor) and the surface of the matrix ( OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of boundaries with very different refractive indices (glass/air type), such screens look better in conditions of strong external illumination, but their repair in the case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be replaced. There may be a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating on the outer surface of the screen, but its effectiveness is much worse than that of the Nexus 7, so fingerprints are difficult to remove and appear quickly.

When manually controlling the brightness and displaying the white field on the entire screen, its maximum value was about 420 cd/m², and the minimum - 35 cd/m². The maximum brightness is quite high, and, given the excellent anti-glare properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors should be at a good level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. There is no automatic brightness adjustment based on the light sensor. At any brightness level, there is virtually no backlight modulation, so there is no screen flickering.

IN this tablet used IPS type matrix. The microphotographs show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without inverting shades and without significant color shift even with large gaze deviations from perpendicular to the screen. For comparison, here are photographs in which the same images are displayed on the screens of the Nexus 7 and the tested tablet, while the brightness of both screens is set to approximately 200 cd/m², and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K. Test picture perpendicular to the screens:

The color balance is slightly different and the colors on the Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 are less saturated. And a white field:

We note good uniformity of brightness and color tone. Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors and brightness balance have not changed much on both tablets, but on the Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 the contrast has decreased to a greater extent due to greater black bleaching and a general decrease in image brightness. Then the white field:

The brightness at an angle for both tablets has noticeably decreased (at least 5 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of the Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 the decrease is greater. When deviated diagonally, the black field brightens greatly and acquires a violet or red-violet hue. A photo from the Nexus 7 shows this for comparison (the brightness of the white areas in the perpendicular direction is approximately the same for both tablets!):

And from another angle:

When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field is average - there are many illuminated areas along the edge:

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is high - approx. 1200:1 . The black-white-black response time is 23 ms (13 ms on + 10 ms off). The transition between halftones of gray 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes a total of 37 ms. The gamma curve, constructed using 32 points with equal intervals based on the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal any blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The index of the approximating power function is 2.40, which is higher than the standard value of 2.2, that is, the picture is slightly darkened. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power-law dependence:

Color gamut narrower than sRGB:

Apparently, the matrix’s light filters mix the components with each other. The spectra confirm this:

This technique allows you to increase the brightness of the screen with the same energy consumption for backlighting. As a result, the colors of images - drawings, photographs and films - oriented to the sRGB space (and the vast majority of them) have reduced saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is not much higher than the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is less than or equal to 10, which is considered a good indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, the variation in color temperature and ΔE is small, which has a positive effect on the visual perception of color balance. (Dark areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

Let's summarize. The screen has sufficiently high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so readability even in conditions with very bright external lighting will be more or less acceptable. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. The advantages of the screen include the absence of flickering and air gaps in the layers of the screen, high contrast as well as good color balance. Significant disadvantages include a weak oleophobic coating (if any), significant unevenness of the black field, low stability of black to the deviation of the gaze from perpendicular to the screen surface, reduced color gamut. Overall the quality is average.

operating system

After several software updates of Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0, which took place after receiving the device, it was fixed on it Android version 4.4.2, dressed in the proprietary Emotion UI 3.0 (under number T1-701uV100R001C001B002). It takes up almost half of the already modest drive, leaving only 4.66 of 8 GB for the user’s needs.

There is still a phone manager available, which allows you to configure the operation of individual applications, clear memory and perform other useful actions for the tablet. There are no gestures in the settings that make it easier to control. Touchpad Android can be minimized at any time. The numeric keyboard supports the Smart Dial function, and the main one supports continuous input.

The operating system is generally stable, but in some cases there is something to complain about: for example, scrolling is not smooth enough Google Play, or loaded web pages are delayed for a fraction of a second before pages are rendered. Turning on the tablet takes quite a long time, about 45 seconds.

Platform and performance

Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 is equipped with a single-chip system SC8830A manufactured by Spreadtrum. In general, this manufacturer does not often appear in the news - recently, for example, it appeared thanks to the expansion of cooperation with Intel. Specifically, SoC Spreadtrum SC8830A is interesting because it will be used in one of the upcoming Samsung tablets, models SM-T561. So we can evaluate the potential performance of this new product now. The characteristics of the single-chip system are as follows:

  • CPU: 4 cores ARM Cortex-A7 (ARMv7-a) @1.2 GHz
  • Cache: 32/32 KB L1, 512 KB L2
  • GPU: ARM Mali-400 MP2 (OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0)
  • Built-in Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, GPS, FM radio
  • Maximum 3G speed: HSDPA 2.8 Mbps, HSUPA 2.2 Mbps, HSPA+ 4.2 Mbps (download)

Although the characteristics of a single-chip system are very modest, processors of this level are still widely in demand in consumer electronics. Complements the configuration with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB permanent memory- standard configuration for budget devices.

Let's move on to the tests.

In browser tests, the SC8830A stays strictly in the middle, inferior to one or the other single-chip systems, depending on the specific benchmark.

In Antutu, the Huawei tablet is second only to bb-mobile. Spreadtrum SC8830A and Mediatek MT8382 are similar to each other, and the difference in results is mainly due to different memory performance. Although the extra 100 MHz played some role in the victory of the brainchild of the Business Bureau. Note that Mediapad T1 7.0 outperformed all competitors in MobileXPRT - here we must pay tribute to the Emotion UI programmers.

According to the results of gaming tests, the Spreadtrum SC8830A is approximately on par with budget Mediatek SoCs. The more powerful Snapdragon 200 stays ahead. The dual-core old Mali-400 in this case, of course, loses to the Adreno 302.

The performance of Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0, in general, met our expectations, and in some places even exceeded them (remember the MobileXPRT results). Let's see how things are with real games.

Modern Combat 5: Blackoutslows down slightly
Call of Duty: Strike Teamslows down slightly
Asphalt 8: Take Offworks fine

Need for Speed: No Limitsslows down occasionally
Assassin's Creed: Piratesworks fine
Deux Ex: The Fallworks with artifacts
World of Tanks: Blitznot enough permanent memory

Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 runs our test suite with varying degrees of success. Less than half of the games work without any problems. Deus Ex instead simply replaces some parts of the landscape with black holes, and World of Tanks doesn't find enough internal storage space to load the necessary game files from the app (it requires an additional 1.6GB).

Video playback test

We did not find the MHL interface or Mobility DisplayPort in this tablet, so we had to limit ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. To do this, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see “Method for testing video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)”). Screenshots with a shutter speed of 1 s helped determine the nature of the output of frames of video files with various parameters: Resolution varied (1280 by 720 (720p) and 1920 by 1080 (1080p) pixels) and frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps). In the tests we used the MX Player video player in the “Hardware” mode. The test results are summarized in the table:

FileUniformityPasses
1080/60pnot playable
1080/50pnot playable
1080/30pBadlya lot of

720/60pBadlya lot of
720/50pBadlya lot of
720/30pGreatNo
720/25pFineNo
720/24pFineNo

Note: If in both columns Uniformity And Passes Green ratings are given, this means that, most likely, when watching films, artifacts caused by uneven alternation and frame skipping will either not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect the viewing comfort. Red marks indicate possible problems related to the playback of the corresponding files.

In terms of frame output, the quality of playback of video files on the screen of the tablet itself is low. However, if we limit ourselves to the resolution appropriate for this screen and the frame rate typical for movies and TV series, then everything is not so bad. When playing video files with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 (1080p) on the tablet screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly along the wide border of the screen. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - all shade gradations are displayed in shadows and highlights - which is what is required for correct playback of typical video files.

Wireless network support

Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 works in mobile networks second and third generations. There is no talk of LTE support, moreover, even new version There is no Bluetooth here - the SoC has only enough capabilities for 2.1 + EDR. In addition, there is single-band Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. You can use your tablet to make calls and send SMS. The quality of voice communication is decent; problems may arise only with the perception of the interlocutor in a noisy room

The navigation module exclusively supports GPS. With a “cold start”, determining the location takes less than a minute. Connecting USB drives via OTG is supported: the copying speed both from a flash drive and in the opposite direction is approximately 6.82 MB/s.

Cameras

Both tablet cameras have the same resolution - 2 megapixels. Commented on their work Anton Soloviev.

The sky ripples a little - you can feel the noise reduction at low resolution.

The large noise reduction grain and colored noise in the branches evoke nostalgia for the first phone cameras.

The sharpness cannot be called bad, but such a resolution does not allow us to talk about it at all.

At the edges of the frame there is a whole bunch of problems of a cheap camera.

The text is difficult for the camera to read, but it can be read if necessary.

The camera can't handle macro photography.

Despite the fact that the front and rear camera modules are almost the same, the front optics are slightly worse, which is quite logical. A much stranger difference software processing cameras, despite the fact that the program in both is the same, according to EXIF.

Front-camera

Rear camera

Unfortunately, the manufacturer installed the camera just for show and didn’t even bother to really work on it. However, here he can be understood: if you have already decided not to pay attention to the camera, then you need to go to the end and not bother with it software. And in the end we have a completely banal 2-megapixel camera module on both sides, the presence of which can only be remembered as a last resort. And it is possible that in some situations he will cope with the task.

Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 can also shoot 720p video (MPEG-4 (Base Media), 1280×720, 6242 Kbps, 23.525 fps; audio: AAC (LC), 96 Kbps, 44.1 kHz, 1 channel ). Considering the quality of the photo, the video turns out to be quite passable.

Autonomous operation

The Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 has a 3000 mAh battery, which is quite small compared to its competitors.

The battery power is consumed evenly, judging by the OS readings. There are two energy saving modes in the settings - “Energy Saving”, which limits the functionality of the device, and “Smart”, which controls the load on the processor and network. We used smart mode in reading and video scenarios.

The Mediapad with the Spreadtrum single-chip system performed excellently when watching video, significantly outperforming its competitors even with a more capacious battery. And in reading mode it was inferior only to the most “charged” of them. But the SC8830A is not suitable for games; here Mediatek solutions show themselves better. However, given the relevance of the scenarios, we are confident that this benefit is unlikely to be used. Huawei Mediapad T1 7.0 came to us for testing without a charger, so we did not measure the charge recovery time.

conclusions

In the Mediapad T1 7.0, Huawei chose a higher-quality display over a more powerful processor, and possible problems were negated by the efforts of the Emotion UI developers. The result is a balanced device, all of whose shortcomings stem from high expectations from the budget segment, the “mandatory program” of which does not include either “gaming” performance or good camera, nor support for the latest wireless network standards.

Comparably priced alternatives to local brands are available on the Russian market, and some of them will, of course, be more attractive. However, Huawei should be praised for the fact that such a large company, under the guise of an ultra-budget device, does not offer a craft that can be difficult to use.

The more I communicate with various devices, the more I understand that tablets and smartphones are completely different gadgets. I want my smartphone to be able to do everything: play games on maximum settings graphics, great for shooting with built-in cameras, accessing the Internet using 4G, and so on. A tablet is usually a device of a different kind. There are often no such requirements for him, to have, so to speak, a complete mincemeat. Often a tablet is needed only for reading and browsing Internet pages, while others need such a device mainly for games, because playing on big screen always more convenient than on a small, for example, 5-inch smartphone display. For others, watching videos on the go is important and such consumers are not interested in anything else beyond that.

Huawei MeidaPad T1 10 is an example of a device-tool suitable for specific, clearly defined tasks. It is equipped with 4G support, has a nice appearance, compact in width due to the 16:9 screen, which is great for watching movies and TV series. We'll talk about this and everything else in today's review e.

The package package of the device cannot be called rich in various bonuses. It has everything you need in the spirit of budget devices: cable Micro USB, Charger and accompanying documents. Let's move on to the nuances of operation and appearance.

Design

Huawei MeidaPad T1 is a large tablet, about 10-inch devices. Accordingly, the use cases for mini-tablets and large devices often differ radically. Namely, the places where the device usually “lives” differ. For example, 7-8-inch models are convenient for travel, travel, hiking, and so on. They are often taken with them because they do not take up much space, weigh little and are easily taken out of the bag when needed.

I don’t want to take large devices out of my backpack again. They are large, you need to use two hands at once to work with them, and so on. Such tablets are mostly homebodies and they lie on bedside tables or in restrooms. Well, you get the idea.

So, Huawei MeidaPad T1 10 is something between these two categories of tablets, with a slight, so to speak, bias towards full-screen devices.

It is narrow and light, which makes it much more convenient to use than devices with a 4:3 screen aspect ratio.

However, it is not easy to operate it with one hand. For example, to take the T1 out of your bag and take a photo of some landmark on a trip with it, you need to use both limbs and nothing else - there is a risk of dropping the device on the ground. The only good thing is that you don’t want to do this using a Huawei device. Why? We'll talk about this in the section on image quality.

I propose to compare the dimensions of the hero of our review with its main competitors in a price range close to it.

There are two open connectors: a Micro USB port on the bottom edge and an audio output on the top.

Slots for cards (SIM cards and Micro SD) are hidden under a cover. The tablet gets wet easily, so using a plug is just a trick and nothing more. So the manufacturer wanted what to do.

Above the screen there is a front camera and an ambient light sensor.

Determination of brightness in automatic mode cannot be called one hundred percent correct.

In the room, the system reduces the backlight, so it was decided to simply turn off the auto-adjustment and be content with manual settings.

For conversation, you can use the built-in microphone (bottom) and multimedia speaker. I love tablets that can make calls. The functionality is mostly unnecessary, since SIM cards are inserted into them mainly for data use, but the ability to make a call still warms the soul. Moreover, there is even vibration present here. This is definitely not what you expect from a tablet.

Along the perimeter of the front side there is a chrome plastic frame slightly protruding above the surface of the screen. It protects the display from scratches if the device is placed face down. Unfortunately, over time, the chrome coating peels off and it will not look very aesthetically pleasing.

There is one more point on which the manufacturer clearly saved money.

The protective glass has an oleophobic coating, but it is very ineffective.

The screen quickly becomes covered with fingerprints and the smooth coating of the front surface turns matte, not pleasant to the touch due to the accumulation of greasy marks. For now, we live in a time when companies often skimp on matches, depriving the user of such important little things as fingerprint protection, an NFC module, and so on. All this is not here - you know.

There is a large metal insert on the back. And the bottom and top of the case is made of plastic, which covers the antennas wireless communication. It all looks good overall and matches everything existing on this moment tablet line from a Chinese manufacturer. So you can’t immediately tell what kind of tablet it is: T1 or M1, or maybe it’s the very popular X1?

Display

The tablet has a screen with a diagonal of 9.6 inches and a resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels.

Individual pixels are visible to the naked eye, which clearly hints at the budget nature of the device.

The sandwich of LEDs and a touch layer has an air gap, in other words, it is not made using the currently fashionable In-Cell Touch technology. As a result, it is noticeable that the matrix is much lower than the protective glass.

The 16:9 aspect ratio allows you to comfortably watch movies and browse the Internet.

The width fits much more information than on 4:3 displays.

Using an IPS screen requires good viewing angles. The photographs below at various angles will help you see this.

As with all other Huawei devices, the user has the ability to adjust the color temperature: from cold to warmer colors.

Technical specifications of Huawei MediaPad T1 (model T1-A21L)

The best way to measure the real capabilities of a device is through games. In Real Racing 3 the tablet performed surprisingly well. The graphics settings in the game are set automatically, so the game really runs smoothly, without frame drops even in dynamic scenes.

In Dead Trigger 2, the device performed well at medium settings. High ones are understandably inaccessible for installation, so you have to be content with what is given.

By the way, it will be useful for gamers to know that the T1 has a very loud multimedia speaker.

Its location cannot be called successful, since in landscape orientation, if the front camera is on the left hand, it is covered by the palm and the sound is muffled. Nevertheless, the device sounds loud and cheerful.

At the end of the section, screenshots with testing results in popular benchmarks: AnTuTu, Vellamo and Geekbench 3.

However, benchmarks are all conditional indicators that often do not affect the real state of affairs.

In reality, the MediaPad T1 cannot be called a fast device. He is thoughtful, slightly clumsy, and the interface animation is quite often slow.

Obviously, the device software is not fully optimized. I think that later there is a possibility that the situation will improve with the release of new firmware, but during my almost month-long testing, no firmware update arrived.

Camera

A 5-megapixel matrix is used here as the main camera, and the photo resolution does not exceed 2560 by 1920 pixels. Interestingly, the device is equipped with an LED flash. This is not a typical element for tablets.

The main problem with the tablet's camera lies in the fact that the system cannot correctly recognize exposure and in daylight many objects turn out overexposed, but indoors, on the contrary, they are darkened and have a criminally bulging blue tint. However, trouble does not come alone, so all the final photographs also have a strange soapy coating. The lens was wiped, so I will blame the quality of the sensor.

In general, examples of photographs can be found below.

The tablet, of course, can record video, but only in a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. However, in the settings you can activate the autofocus tracking mode.

Software stuffing

The tablet runs on Android OS 4.4.4 and latest version EMUI 3.0 shell, which features a smooth, well-optimized and minimalistic interface.

In general, I consider the shell from Huawei to be one of the best in many respects.

Firstly, she is stylish and beautiful. The user can customize the interface to his liking, from fonts to hundreds of different themes and the appearance of application icons.

Secondly, EMUI provides quite nice and convenient functionality for setting up applications right out of the box. So, what Google recently talked about when introducing its new Android M OS, namely, detailed configuration of access rights for each separate program, Huawei has had it for a long time, and on version 4.4.4 of the green robot. Each utility has the ability to manage access rights. For example, for a bank application, you can separately deny access to contacts, but allow requests for geodata.

It is possible to view how much data and through what network interface were transferred for each specific application. You can forcefully restrict data transfer, for example, for WhatsApp via cellular network, but allow it to send messages when connected to Wi-Fi. Convenient and useful thing.

It’s easy to view and, accordingly, configure which programs will start automatically upon reboot. What utilities run in the background after the device goes into sleep mode - please. And everything like that. The possibilities for customization here are really great, and not only in relation to the appearance of the shell.

I also really like the notification curtain on Huawei devices. All events here are not presented in a general heap, but are arranged in a strict chronology and the user can view exactly when a notification arrived, a call was missed, or a screenshot was taken. Everything is clear, stylish and visual.

Unfortunately, there was a fly in the ointment. I am surprised by the company's approach to the production of smartphones and tablets. If the first devices work almost perfectly: quickly and without failures, then some kind of problem always happens with tablets. No, T1 does not glitch at every turn, but occasionally it still manages to produce something like the one in the screenshot below.

Autonomous operation

The tablet has a 4800 mAh battery. This volume is quite enough for the built-in hardware, but it is still difficult to call the tablet a long-liver.

Under heavy load (surfing the network via Wi-Fi and 3G, playing games, listening to music, and so on), the device can survive a day if the T1 is your only device. If the smartphone takes the brunt of it, then you can count on 3-4 days battery life, which is expected for such a tablet.

In the power settings, you can view and manage in detail each individual application that consumes any significant portion of electricity. The same applies to hardware equipment. At proper optimization energy consumption by applications, you can achieve a slightly better autonomy result.

There are three modes of energy consumption: economical, maximum and smart scenario, within which the system itself will adjust energy consumption to specific tasks. In addition, Nutrition Monitoring analyzes and provides a report on problems and nuances, which the user can adjust in detail according to his needs. Again, a convenient thing, thanks to which there is a chance to extend the battery life of the tablet.

Bottom line

With tablets that are equipped with displays with a diagonal of 9 inches or more, everything is complicated, as always. It is still impossible to buy something functional with high-quality hardware components for little money, although the market for such devices has already become quite saturated and there has even been some decline in sales. Devices with Full HD or even higher resolution screens are still expensive, from about 20-25 thousand rubles. Before this border, it is impossible to find something fast, bug-free, with a good camera and with support for, say, LTE. Everything in one bottle - this doesn’t happen. And the MediaPad T1 is from this category of devices.

Yes, it has a good design and it’s comfortable to watch movies on it, but for 16,990 rubles (that’s how much the device now costs) you want to get something more than a budget screen with an almost complete absence of oleophobic coating. I'm not even talking about the camera and the general thoughtfulness of the interface. All this tells us that the tablet direction is clearly not a priority for Huawei. The quality of smartphones and tablets (fortunately not all) differs quite significantly.

On sale Price: 16,990 rubles

Hi all!

In general, as such, I didn’t really want a tablet, but something bad happened - my laptop completely broke down: (and my phone is always in the hands of a child.

Buy anyhow new laptop I don’t want it, and the one I like is not affordable for me at a particular moment in time, so in search of a temporary replacement for Internet surfing (watching movies, for Skype, visiting social networks, online toys, listening to music) I decided to buy myself tablet (in the future, give it to the child).

In the end, after reading a lot of reviews, I chose between Samsung and Huawei. I didn’t want to order a tablet because of a “bump”, I would have to wait, so after visiting several offline stores and talking with consultants there, I opted for and purchased the Huawei MediaPad T1 7.0 3G 8G.

If anyone is interested, the purchase cost me 7000 rubles. + I immediately took the case and the film, plus another 2000.

It was all lyrics, and now let's move on to the dry facts.

Tablet diagonal 7 inches, frankly speaking, not big, but just right for me, and in case of urgent need, you can insert micro-SIM card(there is a connector) and chat like on the phone.

The tablet looks very decent, and I would even say stylish - rear end- metallic, with a slight matte sheen, which also adds presentability ( metal case- an alloy of aluminum and magnesium for greater strength)

- RAM - 1 GB, built-in - 8GB. The memory card is expandable up to 32 GB;

operating system Android 4.4;

Support 3G;

Of course have Google Play- the ability to download and install a huge number of cool and useful free and paid applications;

Liked system application- weather, very accurate forecast with nice animation displaying the weather outside the window.

Quite decent battery capacity - 4100 with energy saving technology Smart Power 2.5. - that is, if you play “light” online games like angry birds or “Talking Tom”, then the tablet holds a charge for about 10 hours, watching movies online is about the same. But if you only look at social networks, Instagram and listen to a little music, then 3 days will be enough.

The cameras are quite average - both the main and front ones are 2 megapixels, but it’s quite possible to communicate via Skype.

The tablet is thin and light - 8mm.

I was very pleased with the responsive multi-touch and the screen itself - rich colors, bright and accurate color rendition, wide viewing angle - we watch cartoons together with the child, and looking at the screen from the side you do not experience any inconvenience. Display resolution - 1024x600 pixels.

Last time maximum dimensions Phone screens are slowly being compared to minimum sizes. Remember how a couple of years ago a 6-inch device was considered a tablet, but now it is already a smartphone. Mini-tablets are also increasingly equipped with telephone functions, and no one will be surprised by a phone call from a 7-8-inch shovel.

The gadget can be easily used to make calls

Just for those who can’t get enough of a smartphone screen, but don’t want to carry around a tablet too, Huawei company released a tablet Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 with an 8-inch diagonal screen and a traditional metal body for the series. We offer an overview of this model.

Contents of delivery

In the package you can traditionally find the tablet itself, warranty documentation and user manual, charger and connecting cable for connecting to a PC.

Design

The appearance is not much different from other Huawei devices and tablets in particular. The tablet with a white body looks stylish and beautiful.

The front panel is plastic, the frames around the screen are quite wide. Below it is the Huawei inscription, on the top there is a speaker, camera and light sensor. There is nothing surprising in the fact that the physical lock and volume buttons are located in the upper part of the right edge, and the flap, under which the SIM card and memory card slots are hidden, is in its lower part. The connector for connecting to a PC and charging is located at the very bottom. This is quite convenient, since the cable does not interfere with charging.

The back surface is made mostly of metal, the top and bottom inserts are plastic. In the left top corner The main camera is staring, above which, slightly to the side, is the headset.

The tablet is assembled perfectly, nothing bends or cracks. It is comfortable to hold even with one hand. The quality of the material is such that scratches practically do not remain.

Screen

The display is quite high quality, has a resolution of 1280x800 and a pixel density of 189, which is a kind of golden mean. The IPS matrix allows you to achieve high-quality color reproduction. The view of the screen does not deteriorate, even if you look at it from a wide angle. Unless you look at the image under a magnifying glass, you won't notice any grain. The resolution could be higher, but then it would be necessary to install more powerful battery or sacrifice the autonomy of the device.

The brightness is not too high, it may not be enough outdoors in sunlight. There is simply no anti-glare filter, so there is a certain risk of not being able to see anything. Although it is quite comfortable to work indoors. The sensor is sensitive, recognizes 10 simultaneous touches, and responds to them very quickly.

Performance

The heart of the device is a completely standard Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8212 with four cores delivering a maximum frequency of 1.2 GHz. The Adreno 302 processor is responsible for the graphics. RAM is standard 1 gigabyte.

In general, the tablet works quickly, without lag. It easily opens websites, plays music and videos, and quickly finds satellites in navigation mode. The GSM module supports third generation networks and is capable of connection speeds of up to 42 Mbit/s. For everyday tasks, the power reserve is quite enough.

But not every game can go well. A simple one, like Angry Birds or Cut the Rope, takes up few resources, but a more demanding one can already run at the minimum resolution. It’s fortunate that most games automatically select the graphics quality, otherwise they would not be able to be launched at all.

Multimedia capabilities

The sound in the Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 is quite high quality and loud, you can listen to it at least not very well. All major formats are supported. Videos can be played in Full HD quality, but the lower screen resolution makes this feature pointless. Standard player understands the main codecs, traditionally displays subtitles crookedly. This problem can easily be resolved by installing a third-party player from the app store.

Battery and operating time

Not very powerful hardware and not the highest screen resolution allow you to achieve high battery life. When watching videos with dim lighting, the tablet can last up to 13–14 hours! An excellent indicator!

In normal consumption mode, including calls, surfing and reading, the average operating time is 8–9 hours. There should be enough charge for at least the entire working day. And if you reduce the load to a minimum, you can extend the charge for almost a day. When playing games with Wi-Fi turned on and the backlight at maximum, you will have to look for an outlet after 5-6 hours.

Camera

The camera quality is traditionally not very high for devices of this class and price range. The main 5 megapixel camera is equipped with autofocus. It works quite quickly and accurately. Colors in normal lighting are reproduced without distortion. Unfortunately, there is no flash, so the camera becomes almost useless in the evening. The 0.3 MP front camera is designed only for video calls. Taking selfies through it is perversion.

Operating system and programs

The tablet has Android 4.3 with Emotion UI installed. It is no different from those on other Huawei tablets; you can find any review of devices from this manufacturer on our website and make sure of this. It has a somewhat unusual appearance, so you will have to get used to it. As a last resort, it will not be a crime if you install a third-party launcher from the Play Store.

The tablet has some pre-installed software, including office suite. If you are not satisfied with something in it, you can easily remove it and install your own programs with which you are comfortable working.

Competitors

The main competitors of Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 are Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0, ASUS Fonepad 7 and Lenovo A3500. Some of them have a slightly smaller screen, but in everything else they are not much different. The tablet from Huawei stands out noticeably against their background with its metal body.

Advantages and disadvantages

Bringing the review to a close, I would like to note the advantages and cons of Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0.

Pros:

  • Capacious battery and long operating time without charging;
  • Very high quality build;
  • GSM module supporting phone calls.

Minuses:

Conclusion

Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 will definitely find its buyer. It’s not just a smartphone anymore, but it’s not yet . Something between a phablet and a tablet. And the long operating time will be very useful for users leading an active lifestyle.

Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 is an inexpensive 8-inch tablet with a metal body, a 3G modem and telephony functions. Outwardly, it resembles the large smartphone Huawei Ascend G7, but, unlike the phone, it has wider frames around the display. Its body turned out to be relatively thin for its price category - up to 9.1 mm. The use of metal affected the appearance and tactile sensations rather than the build quality - the tablet creaks and bends if you press on it.

Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 has a mediocre display with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels. In addition, it has a low contrast level, individual pixels are visible and there is a color deviation - all this is typical for a budget phone. The tablet is unlikely to please anyone with its performance. CPU entry level will not allow you to use it as a gaming platform - many demanding games do not start or crash.

However, we note that it is well optimized for daily use and hardly slows down when performing basic tasks.

The simple “filling” and display had a positive effect on the device’s battery life: in our tests, the battery lasted up to 6 hours in games and up to 12 hours of continuous video at medium brightness levels.

The set of wireless interfaces and communications is typical for a state employee (Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, 3G); in addition, it is possible to make phone calls. At the same time, the quality of voice communication is average: the interlocutor can be heard, but the sound is booming.

Among the tablet's shortcomings, we note the cameras Low quality— Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 has two cameras of 5 and 0.3 MP. In our opinion, they are installed for show. The main disadvantage of the main camera is the lack of autofocus. We believe that cameras are not the most important thing for a tablet, but when it claims to replace a smartphone (SIM card and the ability to make calls), this criterion already acquires a certain weight and significance.

The average price for a Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 tablet is about 11,000 rubles. In our opinion, taking into account Huawei specifications MediaPad T1 8.0, especially its entry-level processor, the tablet is overpriced. At the same time, it is suitable for simple basic tasks: watching movies, reading, listening to music, surfing the Internet. However, if you open many pages in the browser, it already starts to slow down. You can also make calls from the tablet, but the signal quality is not ideal. MediaPad T1 8.0 stands out mainly due to the use of metal in the body, which did not affect the build quality, but rather the appearance of the tablet.

Materials and design - 2.0

The 8-inch Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 looks like a smartphone Huawei Ascend G7: similar body shape and color, same layout of controls and connectors. From the front, the MediaPad T1 8.0 looks like a typical budget tablet: rounded edges, wide bezels around the screen and a speaker above the display. However, the presence back cover made of metal and a plastic frame around the front panel “under metal”, distinguishes it from most budget tablets. The metal back is much more practical than the glossy one - it almost does not collect fingerprints and scratches. Back panel It is not entirely made of metal - there are plastic inserts for antennas at the top and bottom. The side edges look like a sandwich made of metal and multi-colored plastic strips.

There are no physical control buttons on the front side. A solution widely used among tablets is used - the buttons are displayed on the display itself. The placement of the speaker is good - since it is located above the display, the sound will go to the user. However, there is only one speaker.

Build quality is average for budget model. All parts fit well together, nothing is loose. True, despite the use of metal, the body creaks under pressure and bends easily, even if you press lightly on it. However, it no longer restores reverse form, as usually happens if you slightly bend the device.

The Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 tablet can only be purchased in white and silver.

Dimensions and weight - 4.7

The Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 tablet is a medium-sized device: height and width - 21x12.7 mm, comparable to the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 with a larger diagonal. Thickness - up to 9.1 mm, slightly thicker than, for example, Lenovo Tab S8. MediaPad T1 8.0 weighs about 360 grams; only the Dell Venue 8 (372 grams) was heavier in tests. This can be explained by the use of metal in the housing.

We lowered the score on this parameter due to the wide bezels around the display and the substantial weight for an 8-inch device. You can cup the tablet in your palm, but holding it is awkward.

Communications

On the right side of the Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 there are control keys. There are also connectors for Micro-SIM and microSD cards(up to 32 GB), under one common plug. Note that the tablet supports hot-swappable memory cards, and you can also install applications on it. At the bottom you can see the microphone hole and microUSB connector. The left side remains “clean”, and at the top there is a lone headphone jack. microUSB connector is simple, without USB support OTG: You will not be able to connect peripherals to it.

The set of wireless interfaces is typical for a budget device. Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 is equipped with a 3G modem, Wi-Fi module supports 802.11 b/g/n standards, has Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS module with GLONASS support. In addition, you will be able to make calls. During a call, the interlocutor can be heard, but the sound is booming.

Recently on Russian market A modification with LTE support has been released, however, it costs two and a half thousand rubles more.

Performance - 2.3

Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 tablet is equipped with budget processor entry-level - quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 MSM8212, with an operating frequency of up to 1.2 GHz. It comes with Adreno 302 as a graphics accelerator. The internal memory of the Huawei MediaPad tablet is 16 GB or 8 GB, volume random access memory— 1 GB.

Based on our tests, the tablet's performance can be called low. It is sufficient for basic tasks: it works well during daily use, but sometimes it slows down a little when working with applications or in multitasking mode. However, in demanding games the tablet will slow down or even crash. There is no universal recipe; each game must be checked separately. For example, casual games like Angry Birds will not be a problem for him, but Asphalt 8 simply crashes and closes when you try to play or go into the settings.

In synthetic Huawei tests MediaPad T1 8.0 showed poor results. Our tests, each of which was carried out several times, show average values. In the Geekbench 3 benchmark, the tablet has typically budget results - 1127 points for Multi-Core performance, like the old Asus Nexus 7 (2012) by tablet standards. The device completed the SunSpider benchmark in 1621 milliseconds, almost like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 Lite. Thanks to the low resolution, the MediaPad T1 8.0 showed a good result in the Epic Citadel benchmark - 40.9 fps with settings on high performance. If you set the setting with an emphasis on high quality graphics, the image ceases to be smooth, fps drops to 20.4. In the T-Rex HD Onscreen C24Z16 test from the GFXBenchmark benchmark, the tablet showed approximately 7.4 frames per second, and in the new Manhattan test - only 2.7 fps. The results are below average for tablets, and test scenes look more like choppy slideshows.

Display - 3.3

The display quality of the Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 is poor, which, however, is typical for its price. The tablet uses an IPS matrix with a low resolution of 1280×800 pixels. With its 8-inch diagonal, the result is 189 pixels per inch - individual pixels are noticeable on the display. The display actively collects fingerprints.

The touchscreen response can be called good: it is sensitive and quickly responds to touches. The tablet is equipped with a light sensor, auto brightness works fine. On a sunny day, reading something from the screen is already problematic. The display does not have any special modes or settings.

In our tests, the screen showed mediocre results by the standards of an 8-inch tablet. We found that the screen has average viewing angles for an IPS matrix. The results for the maximum measured brightness turned out to be average - up to 335 cd/m2. But the minimum brightness of the white background is about 13 cd/m2, which is quite convenient for reading in the dark. The image contrast is not at all impressive - 253:1, which is low contrast for a tablet. The brightness distribution turned out to be average - 83%. The color rendition of the display is also not the most accurate - the color gamut lacks the depth of green and red shades. The colorimeter also showed quite strong color deviations.

Battery - 5.0

The battery life of the Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 turned out to be high, on par with the LG G Pad 7.0 or Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact tablets. The nominal battery capacity is low - 4800 mAh, but the resolution is low and not the most powerful processor promote good autonomy. So, in our tests, the tablet lasted up to 6 hours in games at maximum display brightness - a little longer than the Xperia Z3 Tablet. When viewing video at medium brightness and in airplane mode, the MediaPad T1 8.0 showed HD video for 12 hours. The result, if not a record, is one of the best in our tests; in this parameter, the tablet outperforms the Asus Fonepad 8. With a “minimum” load (with the display turned on at minimum brightness), the tablet lasted for about 28 hours 40 minutes.

Software

Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 tablet runs on operating system Android 4.3 with proprietary Emotion UI interface. Most likely, the tablet will not receive an update to 5.0 Lollipop; today the company promised to update only top-end and mid-price smartphone models. Huawei did not promise updates even for the more expensive MediaPad X1 tablet. Among the advantages, we note a good keyboard, with markings of additional characters. There's also a 3x4 keyboard to choose from, with a separate number pad and basic arithmetic operations.

Interestingly, the tablet does not have a separate list of applications. Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 comes pre-installed with several browsers, file manager and device manager, Kingston Office, special application DLNA for transferring images to TV, Navitel for navigation, set Google services and other.

Cameras - 2.1

The Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 tablet is equipped with simple 5 and 0.3 MP cameras. In our opinion, they are installed for show, remove good photos they won't succeed. They don't have a flash, which is typical for tablets, but both cameras don't even have autofocus - this is a serious drawback.

The maximum photo resolution is 2592x1944 pixels. Shooting something without autofocus is problematic, but for some reason in the settings there are modes for shooting panoramas, continuous shooting, etc. The main camera shoots HD video (1280x720 pixels) in MPEG-4 format, but there is no tracking autofocus.

The front camera is not suitable for good selfies, but is useful for video calls. The maximum photo resolution is 640x480 pixels, and it has a number of settings and modes. It is not clear who will need this at such a low resolution.

Photo from the camera of the Lenovo Tab S8 tablet - 2.1

Temperature - 4.6

In our tests, the metal body of the Huawei MediaPad T1 8.0 always remained cool. The maximum resting temperature was 29.4 degrees at the back of the device. After demanding games, the tablet warmed up slightly - up to 36.8 degrees at the bottom of the display; this temperature is unlikely to cause discomfort. The good result is explained, rather, by the weak filling of the tablet and the metal back, which is capable of dissipating heat.
