Super-budget device of a new brand

Today, two recently announced first smartphones of the new Wileyfox brand - Swift and Storm - will be officially presented in Moscow. However, they appeared on sale even earlier, since the products of the newly-fledged British company are planned to be distributed, according to the latest trend, exclusively through online trading, and you will not find them on store shelves. The online store JD.com caused mass hysteria among Russian users by announcing an all-time low price of only $89 for the junior model on pre-order. In fact, of course, not everyone got smartphones at the indicated price and on time, but modern Internet sellers have learned to lure the buyer so cunningly.

As for the brand itself, a company called Wileyfox is indeed registered in the UK and has its headquarters in this country, but in fact it is a premium brand of the well-known Fly company, which has Indian roots and is also officially assigned to British companies. Their connection is evidenced at least by the fact that Wileyfox became the CEO Suresh Radhakrishnan who also holds the post CEO and a board member of Fly itself. This gentleman, by the way, was also going to visit the capital today in order to personally attend the launch of his new brand for Russians.

The Russian market for companies with Indian roots, such as Fly and Micromax, has always been quite a priority, which cannot be said about the Chinese, who still treat our region without proper attention. And the Indians, meanwhile, are already coming to the fore: Micromax, for example, managed to top the list of top sales in this summer. Russian market with his device Bolt A79, which at that time became the best-selling smartphone in Russia. It is not difficult to guess that Russians, exhausted by the crisis of the ruble exchange rate, the products of the new brand Wileyfox, offered at such dumping prices, will also surely be a success. For the same Wileyfox Swift model, pre-orders were issued ten times more than the first delivered batches of goods could provide. Be that as it may, today we have the opportunity to personally find out what it is, a smartphone for $ 89, and whether it is worth such close attention from fans of mobile technology.

Contents of delivery

Smartphone Wileyfox Swift comes on sale in a very small box, almost the size of the device itself, made of hard cardboard. The packaging has a rather attractive appearance, a pleasant combination of colors is used, the minimum number of inscriptions, there are no pictures, everything is strict and concise.

There was a place in the box for only one Micro-USB connecting cable, nothing else was included in the kit for a budget smartphone, that is, a precedent has been created when a full-fledged smartphone goes on sale without any complete charger at all - and others will surely follow .

Appearance and usability

Smartphone Wileyfox Swift has a fairly calm design, its appearance can be called unassuming. Modest in design and simple in structure, the plastic case does not claim to be premium, which is not surprising. The device has a rather pleasant shape, straight flat side faces are combined with rather strongly rounded corners, dimensions and weight are quite digestible.

The outer part of the case consists of two parts: a one-piece plastic trough adjoins the screen, which covers not only the back part, but also all the sidewalls, that is, there is no side frame or rim here. The front panel, made in impenetrable black tones, is almost symmetrical at first glance, and the small circle of the grille above the speaker, also painted in black, is almost invisible against the general background. The software interface here can be displayed in all four positions of the device, so that the smartphone can be accidentally taken upside down and not even immediately noticed.

In the hand, due to the rough matte coating, this not too large and not heavy device is held quite comfortably, does not slip. True, despite the matte surface, fingerprints are still visible on the plastic, the Wileyfox Swift case cannot be called so practical, although for this price, buyers will be ready to forgive a lot for this smartphone.

There are no special complaints about the assembly as a whole, the rather thick profile of the cover does not allow it to bend under the fingers. However, when compressed, the case still creaks, this effect is almost always present when we are dealing with a similar structure of the case, where the plastic casing completely covers the entire body of the device. The side mechanical buttons here are located not on the cover, but on the case itself, so that the smartphone can be used even with the casing removed.

The cover is easy to remove and hides conveniently located slots for two Micro-SIM cards, as well as a slot for a microSD memory card. All cards are supported from below by a removable battery, so hot-swapping is not possible here in any case.

The rear surface of the Wileyfox Swift case is adorned with a corporate logo in the form of a stylized fox muzzle (fox in English means “fox”), simply squeezed out in plastic without the use of silver paint or metal. Nearby, as usual, there are camera windows and a flash that also functions as a flashlight. The camera glass is framed by a painted wide ring, but it is not protected from contact with the surface (for example, a table), because it is not recessed inside.

The front part is completely covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protective glass. Developers didn't have to worry about backlighting the buttons below the screen, since the buttons are virtual, placed on the screen.

But the LED event indicator was installed here: a large round dot of the LED shines quite brightly and sharply in the upper part of the case, notifying about the charging status and incoming messages in various colors. The Cyanogen interface installed by default in the device offers a wide range of settings, including the choice of display color and even complete shutdown this function.

Mechanical control buttons are located on the right side. The keys are not very large and protrude a little beyond the case, it is not easy to find them blindly, but the buttons are pliable, the response to pressing is clear, there are no problems with this. The hardware keys do not stand out against the background of the body surface, they have a matte rough coating in common with it.

Interface connectors are habitually located at the ends: on the top there is an audio output with a diameter of 3.5 mm for headphones, on the bottom there is a Micro-USB connector. The latter is deeply recessed inside the case, so the device is not able to work with any Micro-USB cable. Unfortunately, connecting external devices to this port in USB OTG mode is not supported here.

On both sides of the connector are gratings made in the form of an array of small round holes. However, as usual, this does not mean at all that the smartphone has stereo speakers - this is done simply for symmetry, and the speaker is hidden behind only one of the grilles. Behind the second, apparently, is a conversational microphone.

There are no covers and plugs on the connectors, the smartphone is not protected from moisture and dust, and there is no fastening for a strap. As for the color design of the case, so far we know only one variant supplied for sale, black (Sandstone Black).

Screen

Wileyfox Swift is equipped with an IPS sensor matrix, combined with a flat protective glass Gorilla Glass 3 without sides. The screen has dimensions of 62×110 mm, a diagonal of 5 inches and a resolution of 1280×720 pixels. Accordingly, the dot density is about 294 ppi. The thickness of the frame from the edge of the screen to the edge of the case is more than 4 mm on the sides, 14 mm on the top, and 16 mm on the bottom; the frame for such a small case looks quite wide.

You can adjust the screen brightness both manually and using automatic adjustment. Multi-touch technology here allows you to handle up to 10 simultaneous touches. When you bring the smartphone to your ear, the screen is locked using the proximity sensor. The screen does not have an activation function by double-tapping on the glass, but by double-tapping the status bar (at the top of the screen), on the contrary, you can turn off the screen and put the device into sleep mode.

A detailed examination using measuring instruments was carried out by the editor of the sections "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" Alexey Kudryavtsev. Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the test sample.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the off screens (on the left is Nexus 7, on the right is Wileyfox Swift, then they can be distinguished by size):

The Wileyfox Swift screen is a little darker (brightness from photos is 98 versus 107 for Nexus 7). The ghosting of reflected objects in the Wileyfox Swift screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the screen layers (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of borders (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of strong external illumination, but their repair in case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. There is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating on the outer surface of the screen (slightly better than the Nexus 7 in terms of efficiency), so fingerprints are removed more easily, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and with a white field displayed in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 515 cd / m², the minimum was 22 cd / m². The maximum brightness is very high, and given the excellent anti-reflective properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors will be at a good level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by light sensor. Basically in automatic mode as the ambient light conditions change, the brightness of the screen both increases and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the brightness control, but of the three conditions tested, the brightness changes only in complete darkness: if the adjustment is at a minimum - 3 cd / m² (low), at half the scale - 22 cd / m² (normal), at the maximum - 515 cd / m² (very bright). Whereas in an artificially lit office (approximately 400 lx) and in a very bright environment (corresponding to a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lx or a little more), in automatic mode, the brightness always rises to 515 cd / m² regardless from the position of the brightness slider. As a result, the auto-brightness function does not work adequately. At any brightness level, there is virtually no backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker.

This smartphone uses an IPS type matrix. Micrographs show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even at large deviations of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen and without pronounced color inversion. However, in the case of the darkest and lightest shades, there is an inversion of the brightness of the shades along one diagonal. For comparison, here are photographs in which the same images are displayed on the screens of Wileyfox Swift and Nexus 7, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m² (on a white field in full screen), and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K. White field perpendicular to the screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field. And a test picture:

The color reproduction is good and the colors are saturated on both screens, the color balance is slightly different. Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change very much on both screens, but the contrast of the Wileyfox Swift decreased to a greater extent due to the greater lightening of the blacks, and the whites noticeably turned yellow. And the white box:

The brightness at an angle at the screens decreased (at least 5 times, based on the difference in shutter speed) and decreased by about the same degree. The black field, when deviated diagonally, is highlighted strongly and acquires a purple hue. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is approximately the same!):

And from another angle:

With a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the black field is average, since in one corner the black is noticeably brightened:

Also note the scattering of "broken" pixels. In the case of screens of mobile devices, sometimes there are one or two “broken” pixels / subpixels, but we encountered so many defects at once for the first time. The situation is slightly saved by the fact that most of the bright dots are smaller than the subpixels and hardly noticeable, but in any case, a large number of them indicates some kind of violation in the technological process in the production of such LCD matrices. Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is good - about 800:1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 16 ms (6 ms on + 10 ms off). The transition between grayscale 25% and 75% (according to the numerical value of the color) and back in total takes 33 ms. The gamma curve constructed from 32 points with equal intervals according to the numerical value of the shade of gray did not reveal a blockage in the shadows, however, in the highlights, the increase in brightness between the shades is too small, in addition, the white shade differs markedly from the shades of gray. The fit exponent is 2.10, slightly below the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power dependence (with the exception of the bend in the highlights):

According to hardware tests in this smartphone there is no dynamic adjustment of the brightness of the backlight depending on the nature of the displayed image, which is very good.

The color gamut is slightly different from sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components to each other:

The deviations of the coordinates of the primary colors from the vertices of the sRGB triangle are not very large, therefore, as a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is average, since the color temperature on most of the scale is not much higher than the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is below 10, which is considered a good indicator for a consumer device. However, the color temperature and ΔE of the white point are very different from the values of these parameters in grayscale - this negatively affects the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance does not matter much there, and the measurement error of color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

This smartphone has the ability to correct the color balance by adjusting the intensities of the three primary colors. What we tried to do, the result is data signed as Corr. on the charts above. As a result, we improved the grayscale balance on average and even reduced the white point overshoot (this also reduced the inflection in the highlights on the gamma correction curve, and the maximum brightness decreased by only 40 cd/m²). Therefore, in this case, it makes sense to adjust the balance.

Let's summarize. The screen has a very high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without problems even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. The auto-brightness mode is of limited use, as it only works adequately in the dark. The advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, the absence of an air gap in the layers of the screen and flicker, as well as a color gamut close to sRGB and a good (after correction) color balance. Significant shortcomings include the low stability of black to the deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen and the average color balance by default. The applied LCD matrix also has other unpleasant properties: a noticeable inversion of shades in shadows and highlights, white turning yellow at corners, as well as an excessively large number of bright “broken” pixels. Nevertheless, taking into account the importance of the characteristics for this particular class of devices, the screen quality can be considered quite high.

Sound

The sound of Wileyfox Swift unexpectedly pleased me for its level. Both in the headphones and in the main speaker, the sound is very loud, bright, rich and, in general, quite pleasant to hear, while it remains clear at the maximum level, the volume margin is more than satisfactory for any environment. You can only find fault here with not too pronounced low frequencies, but in general it is rare that a smartphone can boast deep bass especially on a budget. There are no complaints about the conversational dynamics either, the voice of a familiar interlocutor is clearly distinguishable and recognizable, extraneous noise not noticed, the noise reduction system copes with its task with dignity.

There is no own audio player in the smartphone; for this, standard program Google Play Music. For manual control in the settings of the built-in AudioFX sound system, there are a lot of preset equalizer values separately for the main speaker and headphones. You can also further boost low frequencies and add virtual volume. There is an FM radio in the smartphone, it works only with headphones connected as an external antenna, it can record programs from the air.

Camera

Wileyfox Swift is equipped with two modules digital cameras with a resolution of 13 and 5 megapixels. The front module has a sensor with a resolution of 5 megapixels, optics with f / 2.5 aperture and a fixed focus. The quality of the pictures is quite modest, the pictures are bright, but the detail is weak and the sharpness is lame. You can control shooting using the hardware power button, there is a face detection mode. From convenient features: You can use a special left-handed mode, and you can also automatic installation maximum screen brightness level when the camera is turned on. This comes in handy in bright sunlight so you don't have to go through the brightness control settings every time.

The main, rear camera is equipped with a 13-megapixel Samsung S5K3M2 BSI sensor, an f/2.5 aperture lens with autofocus and a two-segment bright LED flash. Autofocus is quite slow, but it is practically not mistaken. The interface for controlling the camera is exactly the same as other smartphones with Cyanogen. The settings menu is quite concise, but everything you need is there, up to the ability to manually set the main exposure parameters. Additional shooting modes (HDR, night, in motion, etc.) are scrolled in a circle with the usual swipe down. This is not very good, because by accident, by an awkward touch, you can call, for example, the “under water” mode, and the image will turn blue inappropriately. Such a quick change of modes "on the fly" is actually hardly necessary. Camera2 API is not supported by smartphone.

The camera can shoot video in maximum resolution up to Full HD (1920 × 1080, 30 fps), it is also possible to shoot in slow motion, but at a lower resolution. The camera copes with video recording rather modestly, but it records sound even worse, and the noise reduction system does not cope with noise at all. Image stabilization is not here, neither optical nor electronic. Sample test videos are shown below.

  • Clip #1 (24 MB, 1920×1080, 30 fps)
  • Clip #2 (67 MB, 1920×1080, 30 fps)

Long-range plans worked out well, although the sharpness drops towards the edges of the frame.

The camera almost always performs close-ups perfectly.

Sharpness can be called bad only in the corners of the frame. The rest of the area is very good.

The foliage is worked out well, and only towards the edges of the frame does it begin to merge.

The edges of the frame remind us that we have a budget camera in front of us, but medium shots carefully hide this.

The camera does a great job with macro photography.

Good detail in medium and even distant plans.

At the edges of the frame, the sharpness drops, but in general it is very good.

We also tested the camera on a laboratory bench according to our methodology. It is worth noting that the smartphone display does not correctly display the frame boundaries (much narrower than the camera actually captures), so it was problematic to “fit” well into the stand.

Considering the camera of a budget smartphone, we usually do not expect outstanding results from it. Of course, sometimes there are exceptions. But in this case, we have before us not just a good camera for a budget smartphone, but perhaps the best in this class.

For the sake of interest, a laboratory test was conducted, in which the camera showed a very decent result even for a flagship, achieved here due to a good module and moderate software processing. At the same time, the manufacturer did not overwork and debug shooting in low light, so color noise begins to show through there, and the flash only partially corrects the situation. But in good lighting, the camera copes very well.

In real conditions, the camera has flaws that distinguish it from the flagship ones. The drop in sharpness in the corners and in the middle plans for a budget smartphone is still insignificant. Sharping on the wires is practically absent. But the inaccuracy of noise reduction is felt, but only upon closer examination. In general, the pictures make a very pleasant impression. They are not without flaws, but for this class of devices, these shortcomings are fully offset by the price.

The camera is perfect for documentary shooting, and often cope with art.

Telephone part and communications

The smartphone works as standard in modern 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA networks, and there is also support for fourth-generation LTE Cat.4 networks (FDD-LTE: 800/1800/2600 MHz), that is, the hero of the review will be able to function in the three most common ranges for domestic operators (B3, B7 and B20). In practice, with SIM-cards of Beeline and MTS operators in the Moscow region, the smartphone was confidently registered and worked in 4G networks. The quality of signal reception does not cause any complaints, the device confidently maintains communication indoors and does not lose the signal in areas of poor reception.

The remaining network capabilities of the smartphone are modest: there is support for Bluetooth 4.0 BLE with support for the A2DP protocol, only one Wi-Fi band (2.4 GHz), Wi-Fi Direct is supported, you can organize a wireless access point via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth channels. NFC is not present, connection of external devices to USB port in OTG mode is also not supported.

The operation of the navigation module does not cause any complaints, the speed of satellite detection during a cold start is less than a minute. The module works with GPS/A-GPS and Glonass. Among the sensors there is a magnetic field sensor, on the basis of which the electronic compass of navigation mapping programs functions.

The smartphone supports two SIM-cards. Working with them in the menu is organized on one page clearly and intuitively. Any of the SIM cards can be assigned as the main one for organizing voice calls, data transfer and sending SMS messages; when dialing a number, you can also select the desired card using the corresponding buttons. A SIM card in any slot can work with 3G / 4G networks, but only one of them can operate in this mode at the same time. To change the assignments of card slots, you do not need to swap places - this can be done directly from the phone menu. Work with two SIM-cards is organized according to the Dual standard SIM Dual Standby, that is, there is only one radio module here.

OS and software

As a system, the device uses the Google Android software platform of the latest version 5.1.1 with the latest version officially preinstalled with Cyanogen OS 12.1 with support for over-the-air updates (OTA). The shell is well known, here the emphasis is not on redrawing the appearance, and not on reorganizing sections, but on adding, expanding and improving existing functions and capabilities, thanks to which the CyanogenMod interface has gained wide popularity and gained considerable popularity among fans of mobile technology. It is believed that this customized interface is faster, more economical and more secure. At the same time, in appearance, the interface here is almost indistinguishable from the original Google Android with its Material Design. True, the developers specifically for the firmware of Wileyfox devices redrawn themes and added a corporate logo in the form of a fox muzzle as a button to call the application menu.

Of the features: there is a menu of pre-installed applications, but it scrolls vertically, and not horizontally, like most smartphones. However, the method of displaying the application menu can also be changed to a more familiar “page-by-page” one – through the settings menu, which opens by long pressing on the desktop. Work with gestures is not provided, but support for hardware buttons has been expanded and additional options for customizing the notification panel have been added. It is also possible to switch between profiles with ready-made sets of settings.

Performance

The Wileyfox Swift hardware platform is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 single-chip SoC. The platform is familiar, this is an entry-level 64-bit solution, the capabilities of this SoC are modest. The CPU here has 4 Cortex-A53 cores running at 1.2GHz. Graphics processing is done by the Adreno 306 video processor with a core frequency of 400 MHz. The device has 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal memory, of which a little more than 11 GB is initially free for the needs of the user himself. It is also possible to use a memory card. In practice, our test transcend map Premium microSDXC UHS-1 with a capacity of 128 GB was confidently recognized by the device. Connecting external devices and flash drives to the Micro-USB port in USB OTG mode is not supported.

According to the test results, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 platform showed expectedly modest results within 20K in the AnTuTu test against the background of 60K or more in top models and 30-35K in confident mid-range models. As a result, we can state that the hero of the review is closer to the initial level in terms of performance. Nevertheless, for the basic needs of users, the capabilities of this platform should still be enough.

Testing in latest versions complex tests AnTuTu and GeekBench 3:

For convenience, we have summarized all the results obtained by us when testing a smartphone in the latest versions of popular benchmarks in tables. Several other devices from different segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the received dry numbers). Unfortunately, within a single comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions benchmarks, so many worthy and relevant models remain “behind the scenes” - due to the fact that they once passed the “obstacle course” on previous versions test programs.

Testing the graphics subsystem in 3DMark gaming tests,GFXBenchmark, and Bonsai Benchmark:

When testing in 3DMark for the highest performing smartphones, it is now possible to run the application in Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (due to which the speed can rise above 60 fps).

Browser cross-platform tests:

As for benchmarks for evaluating the speed of the javascript engine, you should always make allowances for the fact that the results in them depend significantly on the browser in which they are launched, so that the comparison can only be truly correct on the same OS and browsers, and this possibility is available when testing not always. In the case of Android OS, we always try to use Google Chrome.

thermal images

Below is a thermal image of the back surface taken after 10 minutes of running a battery test in GLBenchmark 2.5 (GFXBenchmark did not start):

It can be seen that the heating is clearly localized in the upper right part of the device, which apparently corresponds to the location of the SoC chip. Below you can see the contours of the battery, which heats up a little during intensive discharge. According to the heat chamber, the maximum heating was 42 degrees (at an ambient temperature of 24 degrees). Such heating cannot be called insignificant.

Video playback

To test the "omnivorous" when playing video (including support for various codecs, containers and special features, such as subtitles), we used the most common formats, which make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that for mobile devices it is important to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is most often impossible to process modern versions using processor cores alone. Also, don't expect mobile device decoding of everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it. All results are summarized in a single table.

According to the test results, the subject was unexpectedly pleasantly surprised by the presence of support for all the necessary decoders that are needed for full-fledged playback of most of the most common multimedia files on the network. That is, to successfully play them, you don’t even have to resort to using a third-party player - for example, MX Player, although playback in it will also be supported by the AC3 audio format, which is good news.

Video output features tested Alexey Kudryavtsev.

We did not find the MHL interface, as well as Mobility DisplayPort, in this smartphone, so we had to limit ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. To do this, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see “Methodology for testing video signal playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)”). Screen shots with a shutter speed of 1 s helped determine the nature of the output frames of video files with various parameters: Resolution (1280 by 720 (720p) and 1920 by 1080 (1080p) pixels) and frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps) varied. In tests, we used the MX Player video player in Hardware mode. The test results are summarized in the table:

Note: If both columns Uniformity and Passes green ratings are set, this means that, most likely, when watching movies, artifacts caused by uneven alternation and dropping frames will either not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect viewing comfort. Red marks indicate possible problems with the playback of the respective files.

According to the criteria for displaying frames, the quality of playing video files on the screen of the smartphone itself is very good, since frames (or groups of frames) can (but are not required) to be displayed with more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. When playing video files with a resolution of 1280 by 720 (720p) on a smartphone screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly along the border of the screen, one to one in pixels, that is, in its original resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - all gradations of shades are distinguished in the shadows and in the highlights - which is required for the correct reproduction of typical video files.

Battery Life

Wileyfox Swift has a removable battery of 2500 mAh standard for modern smartphones. Thanks to this, as well as low-power, economical hardware and an optimized software shell, the smartphone showed more than a decent level of autonomy in all standard usage scenarios.

Testing, as usual, was carried out at the maximum level of power consumption without using proprietary power-saving functions and modes, although there are such in the device.

Continuous reading in the Moon + Reader program (with a standard, light theme with auto scrolling) at the minimum comfortable brightness level set at the beginning of testing (at 100 cd / m²) lasted almost 12.5 hours until the battery was completely discharged, and without auto scrolling this time will last for another hour and a half. When watching video continuously high quality(720p) with the same brightness level (at the time of testing) through home network Wi-Fi device lasted at least 9 hours. In gaming mode, the smartphone functioned for about 4.5 hours. The total charging time is 2 hours 50 minutes.

Outcome

As a result, we can state that even despite some shortcomings, the Wileyfox Swift smartphone actually turned out to be a very solid device with a very good set of characteristics for its level. All the components here are quite high quality: the screen is more than good, the sound is excellent, the case, although simple in appearance, is reliable and ergonomic, and the platform, although not the fastest, is also reliable, economical and, moreover, produced by the leader market, which also adds points to the device. I would also like to note the excellent localization: unlike most budget Chinese smartphones, arriving to us from online stores, there were neither untranslated hieroglyphic texts, nor rubbish in the form of a mass of added third-party applications. One can only find fault here with the camera, and even then, for the most part, with the implementation of video and sound recording, while taking photos is very good. You can also note a rather meager set of communication interfaces: the lack of support for the second Wi-Fi band, USB OTG and NFC may turn out to be an annoying drawback for some, but for most average users this is more than compensated by the presence of full support for all three main LTE bands used in Russia which may be even more important. As for the price, now a smartphone for $89 is not for sale, the price for it on pre-order is $109, which is still very good for such a solid product.

Better and more expensive update

In the middle of this autumn, the third Wileyfox model in the Swift line, beloved by consumers, went on sale. Before it, the Wileyfox Swift 2 Plus smartphone saw the light of day, and as you might guess from the name, it is the “plus” model that is the most advanced in the family. The hero of today's review has similar characteristics to it, but it has less memory (2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of flash), and the main camera has a resolution of only 13 megapixels, so the recommended cost of this smartphone was lower than that of the older model. However, the declared cost is still hardly as affordable as the original price for the very first Wileyfox Swift model, with which it all started.

But we’ll talk about the price of the novelty later, but for now let’s recall the brand itself: Wileyfox is an English brand registered in the UK, so it calls itself “British” everywhere. The brand was created quite recently, in 2015, and in just one year it managed to enter the international market. Wileyfox smartphones are sold in Russia, the UK, and also in a number of other countries. But something else is more interesting for us: under the Wileyfox brand, the company creates mobile devices with a high degree of customization based on Cyanogen OS firmware, while running on the Qualcomm platform, which is rare. The Wileyfox Swift 2 smartphone was no exception, read more about all the new features in this review.

Contents of delivery

The Wileyfox Swift 2 comes in a very thin hardboard box with a strong orange accent. The box got a rather strange shape: the package is flat, but square in shape, so there is still more space in it than the contents require.

And the content turned out to be even less than the limits of decency require. There is no charger at all, and this practice is not new for Wileyfox. Found in the box only connecting USB cable Type-C and key for ejecting cards. In principle, they do not differ in importance from network adapter, they can also be bought at any store, and there are usually even more of them in the house than chargers, so the logic of saturating the kit is not very clear. These accessories could also be left out, and the packaging could be limited to a bag of pimples, why not? In any case, this Wileyfox product is not so budget-friendly as to justify such petty savings. However, we will talk about the price of Wileyfox Swift 2 below.

Appearance and usability

Wileyfox Swift 2 received a metal case, which has already become classic for most budget smartphones, when only the middle part is actually metal, and the ends are made of plastic, painted to match the color of the metal itself. That is, these are not just inserts on the rear panel, but entirely plastic end parts, where all the input holes of the connectors are made not in metal, but in plastic. In the case of Wileyfox Swift 2, even from a distance, these inserts are noticeably different from the metal of the lid.

Otherwise, this is an ordinary modern smartphone, not the largest, but by today's standards, perhaps even a compact format with a 5-inch display. The device is not big and not small, not thick and not thin, not too heavy, but not too light.

Due to its good size, the smartphone lies quite comfortably in the hand, and due to its not very slippery surface and good shape with flat sidewalls without excessive streamlining, it is not slippery and easily soiled. In general, the smartphone received a fairly practical case.

There are no special complaints about the assembly, the case is strong, but the plastic inserts could be better fitted to the metal cover. Although, we assume that this is a feature of the pre-production sample.

But if you do not look closely at these plastic inserts, then in general rear end The body looks nice too. The camera module looks symmetrical with the same round and similar in size area of the fingerprint sensor. I liked the sensor for its clear work, recognition is not instantaneous, but almost error-free. It is enough to bring your finger to the sleeping smartphone, as the display is activated with simultaneous unlocking. True, in the case of an already activated, but not unlocked display, unsuccessful recognitions for some reason happen much more often.

The camera is accompanied by a LED flash of two multi-colored LEDs, the flash itself is quite powerful, it can work as a bright flashlight.

Let the manufacturer forgive us, but I just want to notice that a shiny plaque with many small holes, which plays the role of a grill covering the earpiece, simplifies appearance front panel, it is completely out of place here. A regular dark-colored slotted grate would look much better here.

There are no hardware buttons at the bottom of the front panel, the buttons are virtual here, and their number and order can be changed in the settings at your discretion. It is clear that there is no talk of backlighting the buttons, but we can note the presence of an LED event indicator in the upper part of the front panel, which shines with a dim dot, notifying about missed messages and charging status.

Cards are inserted into the side slot, the sled is designed for one Micro-SIM card and one Nano-SIM, and the latter can be replaced with a card microSD memory. Thus, the connector here is hybrid, all three cards are not installed in the smartphone at the same time. Hot-swappable cards are supported. You can format the memory card as internal storage and then install applications on it.

Mechanical buttons installed on the opposite side face are metallized and have notches on their surfaces, which makes them easier to grope blindly.

For charging and communication with a computer, a modern USB Type-C connector is used here, this is a good start for the future and a rare case for a budget smartphone. Connecting external devices, including flash drives, is not supported in USB OTG mode. Two symmetrical rows of holes are cut next to the USB connector at the end of the case, but the sound from the speaker comes out only through one of them. Behind the other, apparently, is a conversational microphone.

A 3.5mm headphone jack is embedded into the top end. The opening of the second, auxiliary microphone is located in the same part of the device.

The smartphone went on sale in several colors, including pink. However, it will definitely not be in official Russian deliveries, only three color solutions are provided for our country, the names of which even the representatives of the company themselves did not dare to translate into Russian, and left it: Midnight Blue, Champagne Gold and Tiffany Green.

Screen

Wileyfox Swift 2 is equipped with an IPS touch display with 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3 protective glass with sloping edges. The glass is raised quite high above metal case using a plastic spacer, whereby this bulge effect is further enhanced. The physical dimensions of the screen are 62 × 111 mm, the diagonal is 5 inches, the resolution is 1280 × 720 pixels, the dot density is approximately 293 ppi. The frame around the screen is quite wide: about 5 mm on the sides and as much as 19 mm from the bottom, which is especially striking, since there are no touch buttons under the screen.

The display brightness can be manually adjusted or automatically adjusted based on the operation of the ambient light sensor. The AnTuTu test diagnoses support for 5 simultaneous multitouch touches.

Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are slightly better than the screen of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) (below is just the Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - Wileyfox Swift 2, then they can be distinguished by size):

The screen of the Wileyfox Swift 2 is slightly darker (brightness in photos is 92 versus 101 for Nexus 7). The ghosting of reflected objects in the Wileyfox Swift 2 screen is weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the screen layers (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of borders (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of intense external illumination, but their repair in case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen, there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating, which is better than the Nexus 7 in terms of efficiency, so fingerprints are removed much more easily, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and with a white field displayed in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 480 cd / m², the minimum was 20 cd / m². The maximum brightness is high, and given the excellent anti-reflective properties, readability on a sunny day outdoors will be quite high. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by light sensor (it is located to the left of the front speaker). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. This function depends on the position of the brightness slider. If it is at 100%, then in complete darkness the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 170 cd / m² (a bit too much), in an office lit by artificial light (about 550 lux) it sets it to 480 cd / m² (bright), in a very bright environment (corresponds to lighting on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) the brightness rises to the same 480 cd / m² (to the maximum - that's right); if the adjustment is about 50%, then the values are as follows: 20, 480 and 480 cd / m² (the average value is again too high), the regulator at 0% is 2, 480 and 480 cd / m² (the first value is too low, and the second is too high) . It turns out that the auto-brightness function does not work adequately, but it can be used to further reduce the brightness of the screen in the dark if necessary. Significant backlight modulation appears only at a very low brightness level, but its frequency is high, about 2.3 kHz, so there is no visible screen flicker (but, perhaps, it can be detected in a test for the presence of a stroboscopic effect - we, however, did not succeed) .

This smartphone uses an IPS type matrix. In the micrograph, you can see the subpixel structure typical of IPS:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even with large deviations of the view from the perpendicular to the screen and without inverting (except for the very darkest when deviating along one diagonal) shades. For comparison, here are photographs in which the same images are displayed on the screens of Wileyfox Swift 2 and Nexus 7, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m², and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K.

White field perpendicular to the screens:

Let's note some non-uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field visible to the eye.

And a test picture:

The color saturation of both screens is natural, the color balance is slightly different.

Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens, but on the Wileyfox Swift 2 the contrast decreased to a greater extent due to the strong lightening of blacks, and it also began to show signs of inverting dark shades.

And the white box:

The brightness at an angle of the screens has decreased (at least 5 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but the Wileyfox Swift 2 has a slightly brighter screen. The black field, when deviated diagonally, is highlighted strongly and acquires a purple or red-violet hue. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is the same!):

And from another angle:

When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field is poor:

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is normal - about 850:1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 23ms (14ms on + 9ms off). The transition between grayscale 25% and 75% (according to the numerical value of the color) and back in total takes 33 ms. The gamma curve constructed from 32 points with an equal interval according to the numerical value of the shade of gray did not reveal a blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.05, which is below the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power dependence:

In this case, we did not find any dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness in accordance with the nature of the displayed image, which is very good.

Color gamut close to sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components to each other:

As a result, the colors have a natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is close to the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is below 10, which is considered a good indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, the color temperature and ΔE do not change much from hue to hue - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance does not matter much there, and the measurement error of color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

In the screen settings, you can turn on the mode with automatic color balance correction depending on the time of day (for the night period, the colors will be warmer) and adjust the color balance by adjusting the intensity of the three colors. However, the latter is absolutely not necessary to do, everything is fine with the balance.

To summarize: the screen has a high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors even on a sunny summer day. For conditions of complete darkness, it is possible to set a comfortable level of brightness. The mode with automatic brightness adjustment is present, but it does not work well. The advantages of the screen include the presence of an effective oleophobic coating, the absence of an air gap in the layers of the screen and flicker, as well as a color gamut close to sRGB and a good color balance. Among the significant shortcomings, we rank the low stability of black as a deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen. Nevertheless, taking into account the importance of the characteristics for this particular class of devices, the screen quality can be considered high.

Camera

The smartphone is equipped with two modules of digital cameras with a resolution of 13 and 8 megapixels. The front module has an f / 2.2 aperture optics with a fixed focus and no flash of its own. Selfie-level footage quality is decent in terms of sharpness and detail, but not the best in terms of color reproduction and noise, especially when shooting indoors. Although in general, in inexpensive smartphones, we have seen much worse selfie cameras.

The main camera received a 13-megapixel sensor and a five-component lens with an aperture of f / 2.2. Phase detection autofocus is quite fast, the flash is bright.

The control menu is its own, the camera application is not taken from AOSP. The menu has not changed much compared to previous Wileyfox Swift models, there are a huge number of manual settings, including those that are not very necessary, and somewhere, perhaps, excessive, but for this some users love customization. You can scrupulously choose from as many as 12 different image sizes and 7 levels of its quality (why so many?), Not to mention ISO settings (up to 1600), exposure, white balance, brightness and contrast.

There are even such little things as a special "inverted" mode for left-handers and increasing the brightness of the screen to the maximum when the camera is on. This, by the way, is quite convenient, there is no need to manually change the brightness of the display every time on the street, as is often the case when the viewfinder picture is hard to see in a bright environment. Of the additional modes, there are night, panoramic, HDR, “in motion” and as many as 25 different modes, including “stable shot”. Yes, yes, apparently, the stabilization function is hidden in the mode section, and it can be turned off and on manually at the same time as any of these modes. It is impossible to transfer control of camera settings to third-party applications using the Camera2 API, and there is also no possibility of recording pictures in RAW.

The camera can shoot video at a maximum resolution of 1080p, there are no 4K and 60 frames / s modes. There is no electronic stabilization function, shooting on the go smoothly and without jerks does not work. And yet, the camera does a good job with video shooting in general: sharpness, color reproduction and detailing are normal. The sound is recorded with good sensitivity, but the operation of the noise reduction system, as always in Wileyfox smartphones, causes mixed feelings: the sound is sometimes cleaned up, and sometimes it surprises with the presence of echo and distortion, similar to the sound of water in pipes.

Good sharpness in the field and according to the plans.

The camera has noticeable problems with auto white balance.

The text is well done.

Good sharpness across the frame.

The camera copes with macro photography.

With the removal of the plan, small details quickly merge.

The camera turned out pretty good. The program mostly does a good job with the details in the near and medium plans. Noises are quite strong, but thanks to processing they are almost invisible, and problems with auto white balance can be solved if necessary. In general, the camera is well suited for documentary shooting.

Telephone part and communications

The communication capabilities of the hero of the review are modest, only two 2G bands, two 3G bands, three 4G bands and only one Wi-Fi band (2.4 GHz) are supported, there is no USB OTG. On the other hand, LTE supports exactly those three bands that are common in Russia (FDD Band 3, 7, 20), although the maximum speed is limited to 150 Mbps (LTE Cat.4). There is also Bluetooth version 4.1 with EDR and even NFC with support for Mifare Classic.

The navigation module works with both GPS (with A-GPS) and domestic Glonass, it sees the device and satellites of the Chinese Beidou network. In practice, the device confidently registered and functioned in the networks of mobile operators in the Moscow region, did not lose connection in areas of uncertain reception and quickly restored after a loss. There are no complaints about the navigation module either: the first satellites at a cold start without the presence wireless network for data transmission are detected within half a minute, which is not bad. In general, I would like to note that in terms of telephone and communication capabilities, the device works clearly, there are no complaints at all. The smartphone is equipped with a magnetic field sensor, on the basis of which it usually functions digital compass navigation programs.

In conversational dynamics, the voice of a familiar interlocutor remains recognizable, although the sound is rough, with a metallic tint. The main speaker of the smartphone is quite loud, the sound is ringing and piercing, the call is well heard in any environment. The vibrating alert at maximum power is noticeable, there is a separate subsection in the settings for adjusting its power.

The smartphone supports two SIM-cards. The standard interface allows you to select a specific card for each of the functions in advance or directly during the connection. Working with two SIM-cards is organized according to the usual Dual SIM Dual Standby standard, when both cards can be in active standby mode, but cannot work at the same time - there is only one radio module.

Software and multimedia

The operating system is used as the basis of the software platform in the device. Google system Android 6.0 with Cyanogen OS 13.1 interface is already a more recent version than Cyanogen OS 13.0, which previously released models such as Spark Plus, we reviewed in detail a couple of months ago.

For those unfamiliar with Cyanogen OS, we can reiterate that this is software developed on the basis of AOSP (Android Open Source Project), which is supported by the largest developer community in the world. open source Android. Cyanogen OS uses all the developments of the CyanogenMod project - an add-on for Android, which is responsible just for customization. At the same time, you need to understand that Cyanogen OS is an independent line of firmware created by Wileyfox developers, and in general, you cannot simply install Cyanogen OS on your smartphone current version CyanogenMod. The customized interface contains the maximum possible number of the most diverse "fine" settings, from adjusting the operation of indicators to full control above the pushbutton. Cyanogen OS's capabilities extend even to power optimization, sound tweaks, and camera and browser enhancements, and of course, a lot of attention is paid to security.

There are no superfluous applications at all, and this is what custom shells cleaned of extraneous debris are famous for: no pre-installed free social network clients, no demo games, everything is just on business. To work with files, there is its own file manager, for sound settings- AudioFX equalizer, for recording video from the smartphone screen - Screencast program. The rest is proprietary google apps Android, including Play Music audio player, Play Movies video player, etc., or from CyanogenMod. Any application can be locked so that it can only be accessed with a password or fingerprint identification.

To listen to music, a regular Play Music player is used with customization options in the form of an installed AudioFX equalizer with preset values. The device sounds quite decent for an average speaker in headphones, at least the sound remains clear at any volume level. There is a built-in voice recorder and FM radio. There are no particular complaints about the sensitivity of the microphones, as well as the noise reduction system, the recordings on the voice recorder are quite legible, the smartphone can be used to record lectures, etc. The radio works only with headphones connected as an antenna, it can record programs from the air.

Performance

The Wileyfox Swift 2 hardware platform is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 (MSM8937) SoC. The chip configuration includes eight Cortex-A53 processor cores operating at frequencies up to 1.4 GHz. The video accelerator Adreno 505 with a frequency of up to 450 MHz is responsible for graphics processing. The amount of RAM is only 2 GB, which is not much by modern standards, and the user storage is initially about 9.5 GB out of 16. It is possible to install microSD cards, up to 64 GB is officially supported.

With SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 430, we rarely met in smartphone reviews, but according to the received this moment test results can be said with confidence that this is a platform of a confident average level. And if we compare it with competitors, then in terms of performance it is clearly between MediaTek MT6753 and MediaTek MT6755 (Helio P10), MediaTek mid-range solutions that were very common last year and this season.

The capabilities of this SoC are not outstanding, but they are still quite enough to perform most of the tasks that are set for modern mobile assistant. The platform does not provide high numbers in benchmarks, but quite confidently copes with any tasks, including demanding games. Even the resource-hungry Dead Trigger 2 runs smoothly, not to mention less demanding games like World of Tanks, you can play any of them quite comfortably on Wileyfox Swift 2.

Testing in the latest versions of AnTuTu and GeekBench comprehensive benchmarks:

For convenience, we have summarized all the results obtained by us when testing a smartphone in the latest versions of popular benchmarks in tables. Several other devices from different segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the received dry numbers). Unfortunately, within the framework of one comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions of benchmarks, so many worthy and relevant models remain “behind the scenes” due to the fact that they once passed the “obstacle course” on previous versions of test programs.

Testing the graphics subsystem in 3DMark gaming tests, GFXBenchmark and Bonsai Benchmark:

When testing in 3DMark for the highest performing smartphones, it is now possible to run the application in Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (due to which the speed can rise above 60 fps).

Browser cross-platform tests:

As for benchmarks for evaluating the speed of the javascript engine, you should always make allowances for the fact that the results in them depend significantly on the browser in which they are launched, so that the comparison can only be truly correct on the same OS and browsers, and this possibility is available when testing not always. In the case of Android OS, we always try to use Google Chrome.

the most common formats that make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that for mobile devices it is important to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is most often impossible to process modern versions using processor cores alone. Also, you should not expect everything from a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it. All results are summarized in a table.

According to the test results, the test subject was not equipped with all the necessary decoders that are needed for the full playback of most of the most common multimedia files on the network, in this case, sound ones. To successfully play them, you will have to resort to the help of a third-party player - for example, MX Player. True, it is also necessary to change the settings in it and manually install additional custom codecs, because now this player does not officially support the AC3 audio format.

Further testing of video playback performed Alexey Kudryavtsev.

Due to lack desired adapter We could not verify the hypothetical presence of an MHL interface, as well as Mobility DisplayPort, so we had to limit ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. To do this, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see “Methodology for testing video signal playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)

720/24p Great No

Note: If both columns Uniformity and Passes green ratings are set, this means that, most likely, when watching movies, artifacts caused by uneven alternation and dropping frames will either not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect viewing comfort. Red marks indicate possible problems with the playback of the respective files.

According to the criterion for displaying frames, the quality of playing video files on the screen of the smartphone itself is good, since in most cases frames (or groups of frames) can (but are not required) to be displayed with more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. When playing video files with a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels (720p) on a smartphone screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly along the border of the screen, one to one in pixels, that is, in its original resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235: in the shadows, only a couple of shades merge with black, and in the highlights, all gradations of shades are displayed.

Battery Life

Fixed accumulator battery, installed in Wileyfox Swift 2, received a not so large capacity of 2700 mAh by modern standards. On the other hand, there is neither a power-hungry high-resolution screen nor a demanding hardware platform. As a result, the smartphone is able to calmly hold out for a day without recharging, although in any case we have before us not a long-liver, but an ordinary solid average in terms of autonomy. Testing has traditionally been conducted at normal power levels without power saving mode.

Continuous reading in the Moon + Reader program (with a standard, light theme) at a minimum comfortable brightness level (brightness was set to 100 cd / m²) with auto scrolling lasted until the battery was completely discharged for about 11.5 hours, and with continuous viewing of video in high quality ( 720p) with the same brightness level via home wifi network the device operates for approximately 9 hours. In 3D gaming mode, the smartphone works up to 5 hours.

The device supports the Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 proprietary fast charging function, but does not have a bundled AC adapter. From a third-party charger with a maximum output current of 2 A at a voltage of 5 V, the smartphone does not charge so quickly - within about 2 hours (with a current of 1.75 A at a voltage of 5 V). The smartphone does not support wireless charging.

Outcome

The Wileyfox Swift 2 smartphone is already on sale with us at a recommended price of 10,990 . You can buy the device in the official online store wileyfox.com and flystore.ru, as well as in Euroset cellular stores. The smartphone is covered by a one-year official warranty from the manufacturer itself.

The smartphone is no longer as cheap as the very first Wileyfox. In principle, this was to be expected: as in the case of the first Google Nexus models, which were sold at dumping prices “for seed”, all this must have ended someday. Now the Wileyfox Swift 2 smartphone for 11 thousand rubles has many rivals, especially among Xiaomi products that are not officially certified, although, of course, it is not entirely correct to directly compare the prices of such solutions. Wileyfox Swift 2 is an interesting, in fact, device with a good screen, sound, autonomy and a more or less practical body, with a small but still satisfactory set of communication capabilities and not the worst cameras. However, now this smartphone is frankly overrated. Once the price will fall below 9 thousand rubles, it will be possible to talk about a favorable combination of characteristics and price, but so far, unfortunately, accessibility is not among the attractive aspects of the Wileyfox Swift 2 model.

In conclusion, we suggest watching our video review of the Wileyfox Swift 2 smartphone:

Some time ago, products under the Wileyfox trademark were in rather decent demand in Russia. A similar situation was observed in some other countries. Gradually, however, the Fly sub-brand began to experience problems. This is due to two reasons:

  • The parent company decided to reduce the cost of supporting Wileyfox;
  • Main Feature The "fox" smartphones were the operating system Cyanogen OS (modernized Android), but some time ago, support for this project was almost completely discontinued.

Fortunately, the Russian division of Wileyfox continues to live, independently earning money for the design and production of devices. Now it remains only to understand whether to switch to "naked" Android or to take on the installation of some other modifications of this OS. However, this concerns the future of the company. The best devices already available to consumers will be considered here.

The best smartphone

Wileyfox Swift 2 X

  • Operating system: Cyanogen 13.1 (Android 6.0)
  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 430, 8 cores, 1400 MHz
  • Screen: 5.2 inches, IPS, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Battery: 3100 mAh
  • RAM: 3 GB
  • Built-in storage: 32 GB

Price: from 8 990 rub.

The most advanced device created by Wileyfox. The manufacturer has introduced worthy components into the smartphone, which should suit the vast majority of buyers. In particular, the 16-megapixel rear camera should please, which can take great pictures and shoot videos at Full HD resolution (30 fps). Nothing bad can be said about the 8-megapixel front camera.

On the front panel of the device is a 5.2-inch IPS display. The resolution of the LCD panel is 1920 x 1080 pixels, which indicates a high pixel density. The viewing angles are maximum, the color reproduction is not distorted at any deviation of the device.

The main feature of Wileyfox Swift 2 X is the presence of an NFC chip. This means that a smartphone can be used instead of a bank card. Also present here WiFi modules 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.1 and Category 4 LTE-A. Like the rest of Wileyfox products, this model has two slots for SIM-cards. It should be noted, and a powerful processor from Qualcomm, capable of running any modern games. A modern connector is used to connect the charger. In a word, if it were not for the OS used, the device would be included in our list of smartphones that will not become obsolete for a long time. No wonder the reviews this model written mostly in a positive way.

Advantages:

Flaws:

  • Not the latest version operating system;
  • Wi-Fi 802.11ac support would be nice.

Best mid-budget smartphone

Wileyfox Swift 2

  • Operating system: Cyanogen 13.1 (Android 6.0)
  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 430, 8 cores, 1400 MHz
  • Screen:
  • Battery: 2700 mAh
  • RAM: 2 GB
  • Built-in storage: 16 GB

Price: from 6 990 rub.

From a more advanced fellow, this device is distinguished by a reduced cost. The manufacturer managed to achieve a more modest price tag through the use of not the most advanced components. The camera installed here is the most common, having a 13-megapixel resolution. The amount of memory can also be called minimal by modern standards. Fortunately, the same processor is used, so the gadget has not lost the ability to run all modern games. Also, the manufacturer did not save on the connector, leaving USB Type-C.

Most of all, the device will please the buyer with the presence of an NFC chip. At the time of writing, this is one of the cheapest smartphones that can play the role of a bank card! But the battery capacity is slightly reduced. But this was to be expected, because the physical dimensions of the device also decreased. Now on the front panel is a 5-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.

The smartphone has a very good navigation chip that can recognize signals from GPS and GLONASS satellites. This allows you to use the device as a navigator, which is what some Russian taxi drivers do. Another device pleases with an 8-megapixel front camera and a fingerprint sensor.

Advantages:

  • There is NFC support;
  • Not a particularly high price tag;
  • Compact size and light weight (155 g);
  • Good rear camera and a very good front camera;
  • Decent octa-core processor;
  • There is a fingerprint scanner;
  • LTE networks are supported.

Flaws:

  • Not a lot of built-in memory;
  • Not the latest version of the operating system.

Best budget smartphone

Wileyfox Spark

  • Operating system: Cyanogen 13.0 (Android 6.0)
  • CPU:
  • Screen: 5 inches, IPS, 1280 x 720 pixels
  • Battery: 2200 mAh
  • RAM: 1 GB
  • Built-in storage: 8 GB

Price: from 4 990 rub.

One of the lightest devices in the Wileyfox line. The weight of this smartphone does not exceed 135 g. Also, the device is very cheap, so you should not expect any chic features. On the front panel of the gadget is a traditional 5-inch IPS panel with HD resolution. Some color distortions are noticeable when the device is tilted, but the effect cannot be called strong and annoying. Above the screen is an 8-megapixel front camera - the creators did not save on this. The rear camera has the same resolution.

Like older brothers, Wileyfox Spark has support for LTE. But the NFC chip was not installed here. But most of all, the device disappoints with a minimum amount of memory, which is why you will have to transfer many applications to a microSD card. Nevertheless, it is quite possible to consider the option of purchasing this model, especially if the budget is seriously limited, and it is impossible to hesitate with the purchase.

Advantages:

  • Support for 4G networks;
  • Compact size and light weight (135 g);
  • Low cost;
  • Good screen for the price
  • Good front camera;
  • There is a light indicator;
  • Light and proximity sensors are not forgotten.

Flaws:

  • Not the best navigation chip;
  • Battery capacity leaves much to be desired;
  • Weak processor;
  • Built-in extremely small amount of memory;
  • Not the latest version of Android.

Best budget smartphone

Wileyfox Spark+

  • Operating system: Cyanogen 13.0 (Android 6.0)
  • CPU: MediaTek MT6735, 4 cores, 1300 MHz
  • Screen: 5 inches, IPS, 1280 x 720 pixels
  • Battery: 2200 mAh
  • RAM: 2 GB
  • Built-in storage: 16 GB

Price: from 5 990 rub.

Wileyfox couldn't stop at the regular version of Spark. Not all people were delighted with the purchase, so it was soon decided to release Spark +. The creators did not change the design of the device, and many characteristics were left the same. In particular, it also uses a 5-inch IPS panel with a resolution of 720p. The processor has not undergone any changes either, which has a hard time launching some particularly heavy application.

What are the improvements? First of all, it should be noted that the amount of RAM and permanent memory has doubled. It is very important! Also, someone will be pleased with the 13-megapixel rear camera, which performs much better than a similar component built into its ultra-budget counterpart.

Perhaps these are all the changes that can be mentioned. The device did not receive an NFC chip and a fingerprint scanner. The version of the operating system also remained the same, although this is not particularly Wileyfox's fault.

Advantages:

  • Low cost;
  • The optimal amount of memory for such a price;
  • The rear camera has a high resolution;
  • Good quality front camera;
  • There are proximity and light sensors;
  • Small size and weight (134 g);
  • The device works in 4G networks.

Flaws:

  • I would like a more recent version of Android;
  • The processor cannot be called powerful;
  • Not the highest battery capacity.

Conclusion

At the time of writing, the Wileyfox smartphones discussed above were the most relevant. All these phones should suit any person who does not expect unusual skills from such a device and the launch of three-dimensional games with the maximum level of graphics.

Do you have a smartphone made by Wileyfox? Or are you just looking at products under this brand? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Smartphone Wileyfox Swift from birth has good data: 5‑inch IPS screen, 4-core Snapdragon 410 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of ROM, support for 4G and two SIM cards, Cyanogen OS 12.1 shell (Android 5.1). And the price is "delicious" - $89 (if you take into account the $20 discount). Alas, from March 1, the discount was canceled, now the device costs $109. Let's see what kind of "beast" it is, what its pros and cons are.

At the end of October, a new telephone brand Wileyfox (which can be translated as "sly fox") and two smartphones were presented in Russia: Wileyfox Swift and Wileyfox Storm. Later it turned out that Wileyfox is a subsidiary of the popular Fly brand, a well-known manufacturer of budget smartphones. Wileyfox was created to conquer the segment of more expensive smartphones. And this is logical, since the market is gradually saturated with budget devices: consumers want better performance. True, they still do not want to pay a lot: the crisis is not over yet.

Pros of the Wileyfox Swift smartphone
1. Price. Swift costs $109. Or $89, so you can easily get a $20 discount. In rubles, this is a little more than 8 thousand rubles. For such money it is not so easy to buy a smartphone with similar characteristics. So Wileyfox Swift is a bargain. And if the dollar exchange rate drops to 35 rubles, there will be no price - “chocolate” (just kidding).
2. Memory. There are 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of ROM on board, of which about 10 GB will be available to you. This is a decent volume (it is believed that this is the merit of Cyanogen). In addition, there is a slot for microSD memory cards. Cards up to 32 GB are supported, but larger memory cards should work.
3. Screen. Diagonal 5 inches, resolution - 720 × 1280, pixel density - 294 ppi. Today, these are optimal parameters for five-inch screens. Multi-touch: 10 touches (why so many is unclear, but let it be). The screen is quite bright (up to 530 cd / m2) and contrast, it fades in the sun, but not much.
The display is made using Oncell Full Lamination technology (protective glass and touch panel are one whole). Protective glass - Gorilla Glass 3, there is an oleophobic coating.
In addition, in the settings you can adjust the color reproduction (LiveDisplay option), set the color temperature, change the size of icons and fonts (see the "Screen Density" option in the settings - another feature of Cyanogen).
4. Design. Budget smartphones usually do not have an interesting design. Swift is the exception to the rule. Along the perimeter of the phone there is a thin metal border, on the back side there is a convex logo of the company and a camera framed by a thin orange border. The back side of the smartphone has a rough coating that prevents slipping (however, it gets dirty and scratched easily). There are two colors of the phone: white and black.

5. Working with memory cards. You don't need to be rooted to be able to transfer apps and games from phone memory to memory card (and vice versa).
6. Two SIM cards, 4G (LTE). Now you won’t be surprised by this, but support for two SIM cards, as well as fourth-generation cellular communications, cannot but be written down as pluses. Both slots support 4G, but if you insert a 4G SIM card into one slot, the other slot can only work in 2G format.
7. Good cameras. The main camera has a 13 MP sensor (4160x3120) with f/2.0 aperture. There is autofocus and dual flash. The front camera has 5 MP (2560x1920) and fixed focus. At 720p, you can shoot video in slow-mo mode (slow motion). With good lighting, good pictures are obtained.
8. Cyanogen OS 12.1. For more information about this firmware, see the "Software" section. Here I also note the ease of obtaining root rights. To do this, you only need to launch the Files application and enable root in the settings.

Cons smartphone Wileyfox Swift
1. Scheme of purchase. You can buy a phone only through two online stores: https://ru.wileyfox.com/ and http://www.jd.ru/. Nobody sells Wileyfox smartphones anymore. And if so, you will not be able to check the screen for dead pixels in advance (a common problem in the first batches of Swift). Delivery within 1-2 weeks.
The second minus is the price in dollars. At the time of the start of sales, the dollar exchange rate was 62 rubles, now it is 76 rubles. Accordingly, for 4 months the price increased by 1.5 thousand rubles.
2. Warranty. Wileyfox models can be serviced in more than 200 authorized service centers throughout Russia. But it can be difficult to return a defective or defective device. You can read more here: http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=695612 .
3. Working time. 6-6.5 hours (watching online video via Wi-Fi). This is a good result for a budget device, but the “cunning fox” was expected to last longer without recharging.
4. Poor equipment. There is no charger or headset included. There is a microUSB-USB cable, but it is short - only 40 cm. It is not very convenient to use it. The manufacturer took such a step in order to reduce the final cost of the smartphone. If necessary, branded memory and headset can be proven on the site. However, you can charge the phone from the USB port of the computer and any memory.
5. GPS. The sensitivity of the GPS receiver is average. On a cloudy day, the phone connected to 11-12 satellites in two minutes (19-20 satellites were detected), and the measurement accuracy was 10-11 meters.
6. Button layout. They are located on the screen itself, taking up useful area. At the same time, there is an unused area below the screen, where they would fit perfectly (see the picture: Fly Cirrus 2 on the left, Swift on the right).

Soft
Wileyfox Swift has Cyanogen OS 12.1 firmware built on Android based 5.1. Cyanogen OS gives you access to a large number of options that allow you to change many system settings. Due to this, this once fan firmware has become popular among users and is now officially released.
The list of applications is shown not in the form of icons, but in alphabetical order (as in Windows 10).
A number of proprietary Cyanogen OS applications are preinstalled: browser, Audio FX equalizer, mail client and TrueCaller, which works in conjunction with a dialer to help identify unknown numbers and block unwanted calls. There is an application for recording video from the screen and sound from the built-in microphone.
You can easily change the theme (you just need to create an account in Cyanogen OS). You can also change individual components: fonts, wallpapers, icons, status bar, controls, navigation bar, loading animation, and sound sets.
If you tap on the date in the blind, you will find yourself in the calendar, if by the clock - in the alarm settings. If you slide your finger along the right edge of the curtain, access to the switches will open. If on the left - notifications will open. Double clicking on the screen will turn off the screen.

Attention! Wileyfox phones use the FPR option, which works similar to Apple's Activation Lock. If someone logs in with their Google account on a Wileyfox phone, and then resets it to factory settings, then the next time you turn it on, you will need to enter the login and password from the account that was entered before the reset. Otherwise, you will not be able to use the device. That is, to change your Google account, you must first delete it on your smartphone and only then reset the settings to factory settings.

Battery and operating time
Battery capacity - 2500 mAh. Removable battery, model SWB0115.
The manufacturer promises up to 10 hours of talk time, up to 180 hours of standby time and up to 30 hours of music listening.
When watching online videos on YouTube, the smartphone lasted 6-6.5 hours (brightness and volume in the middle, listening through headphones, mobile Internet and Bluetooth are disabled).
In the settings, you can select the type of energy consumption: "balanced", "energy saving", "high performance".
The time for a full charge from the charger (1 A) in the off state is about 2.5 hours. The duration of a charge from a computer (USB port at 500 mA) is twice as long.
Pressing the power button once in the off state will show the charge level (percentage). There is an LED that indicates the charge level.
