Mobile phone asus zenfone 5 a501cg. Various sensors perform various quantitative measurements and convert physical indicators into signals that a mobile device recognizes

Screen diagonal - 5 inches, matrix type - S-IPS (a kind of IPS-matrices), resolution - 1280 × 720 pixels, the display is covered protective glass Corning Fit (similar to Gorilla Glass), there is an oleophobic coating.

First of all, we note that the presence of an oleophobic coating in such a budget smartphone is a big plus. You will not have any problems using gestures (on devices without an oleophobic coating, the finger is constantly stuck and using the same Swype is very inconvenient) and cleaning the screen from dirt.

The screen itself boasts support for working with gloves and two special modes for fine tuning color range. In the display settings, you can make the colors warmer or colder, as well as turn on the “reading mode”, which softens the white color, making it easier to read from a smartphone. As for working with gloves, we tested this function: responsiveness with gloves is not so high, but it is quite enough to take a call or scroll through the list of new messages.

HD-resolution and S-IPS-matrix have a positive effect on picture quality, the image is smooth and clear, color reproduction is close to natural. The same viewing angles are typical for budget smartphone, could have been better. In the sun, the display almost completely fades, it also has problems when reading in the dark, I want to make the minimum brightness even less. This indicates a small range of brightness.

In general, for a five-inch device for 7000 rubles, the display used here is very good.

Camera

At the presentation of the Zenfone line in Russia, we were told a lot of good things about the shooting technologies used and the quality of the camera, so it was more interesting to test them on our own.

The smartphone is equipped with two cameras: the main one with 8 MP and the front one with 1.3 MP. The main camera takes good pictures in sunny weather. When the lighting deteriorates, grain appears in the photo. The device has a separate night mode, which reduces the resolution of the final image, but increases its brightness. We tested it and we can note that the picture does look brighter, but the final quality is still poor.

The smartphone can shoot with the bokeh effect, when the entire background except for the subject is blurred. For a budget device, the pictures are quite decent.

Video is recorded in the maximum resolution of Full HD at 30 frames per second.

Working with text - 5.0

The smartphone has a proprietary keyboard preinstalled, it is convenient for simple typing. The keys are large, erroneous presses are minimal, there is a separate row for quickly entering numbers. The keyboard supports gesture input (Swype), as well as a set of additional characters by holding the key.

Compared to previous versions of the keyboard, the updated one has become more convenient.

Internet - 4.0

The Asus Zenfone 5 uses a standard android browser with a few modifications from the manufacturer, it is perfect for browsing any web pages. The browser has automatic scaling when text is enlarged and a built-in translator. A separate reading mode is also present.

According to our tests, this is one of the most convenient built-in browsers, it is perfect for both undemanding and advanced users.

Interfaces

The smartphone has the following interfaces: Wi-Fi (b / g / n) (support for dual-band Wi-Fi is not available), Bluetooth, GPS, but there is no support for NFC and LTE. The entire line of Zenfone can work with SIM-cards at the same time. However, it is worth noting that the device has only one radio module, so when talking from one SIM card, the second one becomes unavailable.

Also, in our tests, the device could not re-find the network signal if at some point it was lost (for example, in an elevator or subway), we had to restart it or turn on / off the “on the plane” mode.

Multimedia - 3.0

We tried to play various video files on Asus Zenfone 5: the smartphone supports only common formats and codecs, the player plays videos in high quality, up to 1080p. Among the support for rare formats, we will single out only MKV, but the built-in audio player could not play AVI. The choice of subtitles and audio tracks is also missing. The audio player in the smartphone plays only popular MP3, AAC, WAV formats.

Battery - 2.5

The smartphone has a non-removable lithium polymer battery capacity 2110 mAh. These are standard numbers for many modern smartphones. The results of our tests are as follows: when watching HD-video at maximum brightness, the device is discharged in 5 hours, when listening to music - in 32 hours.

Performance - 1.8

The Asus Zenfone A501CG uses Intel platform Atom Z2560 Dual Core 1.6GHz Processor PowerVR SGX544 MP Graphics Volume random access memory- 2 GB.

We tested the performance of the smartphone in a few simple tests. Firstly, we checked how much desktops and pages are scrolled in the browser - there are no complaints about this parameter for the smartphone. We also tested it with modern games and we can note that most of them are perfectly supported by Zenfone 5, slowdowns can be observed only in the most productive ones (Asphalt 8, Modern Combat 5).

Memory - 4.0

The amount of built-in memory in the phone Asus Zenfone 5 can be equal to 8 GB or 16 GB, of the 16 GB version, 12 GB is available to the user. The smartphone has a slot for memory cards up to 64 GB, hot swap is supported.

Peculiarities

The device runs under the control of the ZenUI shell, this new interface from Asus with a lot of customization. The manufacturer improved the dialer (Russian letters appeared in it), added its own keyboard, installed several additional functions in its own browser, and in general did a great job of adapting the shell to the needs of the user. In our opinion, ZenUI can compete on equal terms with the more famous Samsung TouchWiz and HTC Sense.

Competitors

For the spring of 2015, the price of the Asus Zenfone 5 (A501CG) smartphone is approx. 12000 rubles. For this money, you get a smartphone with a high-quality screen, good performance, high-quality body materials and a good camera.

The closest competitor in terms of characteristics - Huawei Honor 3C, he has better display and dimensions, but the model costs 2000 rubles more.

For the money, we think the Asus Zenfone 5 is a great value proposition for users looking for an inexpensive yet quality smartphone from a famous brand.

Delivery set and packaging

Zenfone 5 comes in an elegant rectangular cardboard box with a minimalist design:

The front side and sides of the package do not bear technical information about the device inside, while on the left sidewall in the form of icons the main functions supported by the smartphone are presented:

The back of the package contains detailed description smartphone, including the capacity of the built-in battery. True, this description is made in small print:

The kit includes:

· Charger with USB connector;

· micro usb cable;

a headset

Interchangeable headphone inserts

Instructions and warranty book.

Body and controls

The smartphone is equipped with a 5-inch screen, and occupies almost the entire front of the case, only at the bottom there is a decorative brushed aluminum overlay. The back cover has a rounded profile and is made of matte rough plastic, pleasant to the touch, thanks to which the phone sits tightly in the hand and does not try to slip out:

--- ---

The body parts fit very tightly to each other, do not creak, and in general there is a feeling of a monolith.

Fortunately or unfortunately, but the only metal part of the case is the same overlay at the bottom of the front side of the device. This does not mean that the smartphone looks or feels “cheap”, the quality of materials and workmanship is at a very high level.

The touch buttons do not take up a useful area of the screen, which is good, but the buttons are not backlit, and when you press them in the dark, you have to navigate from memory.

Control buttons ("rocker" volume and power button) are grouped on the right side of the device:

The button travel is clear, with a well-perceived click.

On the top edge there is a 3.5 mm jack for connecting a headset (headphones) and an additional microphone hole:

On the bottom there is a hole for the main microphone and a micro-USB jack for connecting a sync cable from a PC or a charger:

In general, the arrangement of controls and connectors is logical and convenient, using the device with one hand is not difficult.

Under the back cover are slots for SIM-cards, micro-SIM form factor, as well as a slot for microSDHC memory cards (the maximum supported card size is 64 GB). The arrangement of these connectors implies the possibility of hot-swapping both SIM-cards and memory cards.

Rechargeable battery is non-removable:

Screen

The screen matrix is made using Super-IPS technology with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels. The physical size of the screen is 111×63 mm (own measurements), the density of pixels per inch is 294 ppi. The matrix is covered with protective high-strength glass Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with a fairly effective oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating that prevents the formation of smudges from touches.

Under the screen glass in the upper part of the device are located:

Proximity sensor that blocks the screen when bringing the smartphone to your ear;

multicolor led indicator battery level, notification of a message or missed call;

A light sensor that changes the intensity of the backlight of the screen depending on the ambient light.

The auto-brightness setting works adequately without forcing the user to make manual adjustments.

The screen has good color reproduction and wide viewing angles, but the brightness margin is not enough. When using the device outdoors, the screen fades.

The touchscreen of the screen is able to perceive up to 10 simultaneous clicks:

The touchscreen also has a special mode for working with gloves, and the susceptibility of the screen does not suffer from this:

Interface and OS

The smartphone runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS, supplemented with an updated ZenUI shell:

--- --- ---

Following the fashion, ASUS made their interface in a new minimalist style with "flat" icons.

ASUS paid great attention to the menu quick settings, called from the notification shade:

In addition to the standard android applications, ASUS added a few of their own:

organizer Do It Later;

What's Next weather app

SuperNote, a note-taking app that can read handwritten text;

· Splendid screen color temperature setting application;

· Master of preset phone modes (Smart mode, Music, Movies, Recording, Games, Speech);

WebStorage app to sync phone data with cloud storage;

· file manager with built-in zip-archiver.

There are also several applications for interacting with the environment:

· PC Link – smartphone control from PC;

· Remote Link - remote control of a PC or tablet;

· Share Link - direct file transfer application via WiFi-direct;

ASUS even provided a special Easy mode, which is a lightweight interface with larger fonts and icons for the main applications:

In this form, the phone will be convenient to use for children, the elderly and people with disabilities.

Performance

The smartphone platform is based on a dual-core Intel Atom Z2560 processor with Hyper-Threading technology support, clocked at 1.6 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 16 GB internal memory (of which 12 GB is available to the user). There are also versions of ASUS Zenfone 5 with a 2 GHz Intel Atom Z2580 processor and 2 GB of RAM. Quite normal characteristics for a device of the middle price range.

The built-in memory can be expanded with a microSDHC memory card. The maximum supported card size is 64 GB, which is not the most outstanding result by today's standards, many devices support cards up to 128 GB.

Graphics processing is carried out by the PowerVR SGX 544MP video accelerator.

The platform provides comfortable work with pages in the browser and smooth scrolling of desktops. However, in some resource-intensive games, performance is clearly not enough. For example, Dead trigger 2 with maximum settings starts, but goes with strong slowdowns. You can play Asphalt 8 with maximum settings, but sometimes the image lags.

Communications and Usability

The smartphone supports two SIM cards, but it has one radio module, and SIM cards cannot be active at the same time. The device confidently keeps the signal, there were no problems with communication either when used indoors or outdoors.

Supported communication standards include UMTS/WCDMA HSPA+/DC-HSPA+, UMTS 850/900/1900/2100, EDGE/GPRS/GSM: 850/900/1800/1900. Unfortunately, LTE is not supported.

The navigation module receives both GPS and GLONASS satellite signals:

The cold start time was about 20 seconds.

Of course, the smartphone is equipped Wi-Fi modules standards 802.11b / g / n (2.4 GHz) with support for Wi-Fi Direct and hotspot, and Bluetooth 4.0. Everything works flawlessly, and there is no point in describing the operation of these functions.

The speaker volume and microphone sensitivity are sufficient for communication in any environment.

Thanks to the convex cover, the main speaker touches the surface, but is not completely covered by it. When used indoors, the volume of the speaker is sufficient, but it is difficult to hear the call outdoors.

Camera

As it should be for a modern smartphone, two cameras are installed: a front one with 2 megapixels, and a main one with 8 megapixels.

ASUS PixelMaster technology, which expands the range of camera functions implemented in Zenfone 5, includes several preset shooting and image processing modes:

auto, when all shooting settings are set automatically;

time control - the ability to select the desired frame when shooting moving objects using the "rewind" of the captured frames;

· HDR - high dynamic range mode for taking pictures with more pronounced colors and contrast;

· night shooting mode;

shooting mode in low light;

· own photo - mode for "crossbow", shooting self-portraits;

a miniature

· depth of field - mode for selecting objects in the foreground;

· intellectual removal - for cutting out unnecessary objects from the frame;

· “everyone smiles” mode;

· improvement;

GIF animation - creating moving pictures from several consecutive frames.

The front camera is quite capable of taking self-portraits and making video calls.

The main camera does not make the right impression. In bright sunny day conditions, it does not do a very good job of processing images. Pay attention to the sky shining through the trees:

In addition to the automatic shooting mode, the Turbo mode is available - the camera takes several consecutive shots at a resolution of 1600x900 pixels. The number of pictures that can be taken per session is limited only by the device's memory capacity. However, the quality of these shots is far from perfect:

The feeling of the camera is twofold. Shooting closely spaced objects succeeds in "excellent", but shooting a general plan - only three points. Perhaps in next versions Firmware engineers ASUS will be able to improve the performance of the camera.

Time battery life

The smartphone has a non-removable battery with a capacity of 2110 mAh. With the automatic adjustment of the screen backlight turned on, during normal use (web browsing on the way to work), the battery lasted for a day. Asphalt 8 drained the battery in 3 hours. With 720p video looped, the phone lasted 5 hours. Not a very strong indicator.

· big screen sensitive to work with gloves;

high performance for this segment;

Two SIM cards.

no support LTE networks;

No OTG support;

short battery life;

· ambiguous work of the camera.

The highest acceptable SAR value in the US is 1.6 W/kg per gram of human tissue. This value is set by the FCC, and the CTIA controls whether mobile devices comply with this standard.

Cool smartphone, the price pleases. A bunch of settings of all sorts and there are quite a few of them in the camera. Everything works fast. Possibility to use 2 microsymbols. I am happy with my purchase and have no regrets. The battery is already a separate conversation, I personally adapt (volume to at least 2000 only).

Overall, a great phone with great features for the money. good, fast, functional android. Intel processor Atom. The speed of the Internet does not give out the absence of 4G !!! Ships quickly, which can not but rejoice!

Purchased in autumn 2014. A reliable device, no serious bugs were noticed, the connection is excellent, GPS works reliably, the main camera shoots with a solid four, I didn’t use the front camera, but it works, no hardware problems were noticed, although the system after a year and a half of use began to eat too much memory. The phone is used as a workhorse - communication, internet, the camera is sometimes used in black - more than 1000 pictures of text at a time - the text is readable. There were practically no games, those that were - were not used, because. the phone is actually an understudy of a working computer. The navigator didn't disappoint. In general, I am very pleased, I perform my duties, for which I bought it, sacrificing the battery, I do it properly. It was originally purchased specifically for tough work with the requirement of constant communication, stable Internet, good quality camera for capturing typewritten text in large quantities. According to the last parameter, it is above all praise - I stopped carrying a camera with me, because the quality of the pictures turned out to be equivalent, the speed of work on the phone - a tower. If it is possible to replace the battery (and, ideally, increase its capacity), the device will not be worth the price. Update as of July 16, 2019: Changed the battery. It would be better not to change. In April 2019, I started losing connection. Without a cover-book, the problem was solved, but, as a result of the hand * negligence * of today's hostess, the screen was broken. But this didn’t kill ICQ, everything works.)) Compared to Samsung, at least the A and J series of 2016-2018. the camera is fantastic.

I still use this model, no complaints.

I bought in 2014 with money from my birthday. It cost about 4000 rubles. I bought just shortly before the infamous price increase, which still has not changed, but continues to grow in leaps and bounds. For the money, this is quite a suitable device, even today it is quite working. I was surprised when I later found out that the processor has not 2, but as many as 4 threads. Kvalki, of course, overtook, but in the price category at that time, it seems, no. But the video chip failed. PowerVR, unfortunately, is rather poorly supported by developers, which is why we have not the best results in games. But even while the "scourge smartphone" at the level of modern Xiaomi was not considered. In general, apart from the video chip, it is almost a complete analogue of the budget medium Meizu and Xiaomi. Yes, there are fewer cores, fewer threads, but the most important thing here is not the cores and frequencies, but the joint work of the RAM and the processor. And here with the average models of the ZenFone series, it seems to me that it is better. I was pleased with the sociable support using an interpreter. :-D But they communicate normally in English. :-) And as a bonus: I brought it to the SC after more than 2 years. :-) But Meizu M5 is less than six months of warranty (well, at least they put a guarantee).

I took one of the first batches, even before the start of official sales in Russia for 6990. For this price, the phone is interesting, for over 10000 it’s completely NO, given the imminent appearance of Zenfone 2, all the more NO and NO. From the pros - good screen, speed of work, excellent software, support from the manufacturer - they cut something, change it, but the fact that everything works out of the box is a fact, it works well - a fact, you don’t feel much thickness. Updates come, are put and the brain is not strained. There are downsides. The lower insert, as well as the frames along the entire front part, could be made smaller (see Zenfone 2), nothing prevented it from being done right away, the same can be said about the thickness as a whole - it can be thinner. The side edge along the edge along the sidewall of the phone is too flimsy - it crumples and bends and traces remain. The glass itself does not suffer at the same time - it all looks strange. Fell and more than once - intact. The insert bears a trace of concrete, but is intact. Once they bent it by accident, stepping on it in the center - they bent it back and everything was done. But strength is not his forte. The battery could be larger, but it is no different from all phones. It will do P.S. 2 times I changed the screen with the front panel myself, it's very easy to do it. 1 time cleaned everything from oxidation. Changed microphone. Changed side buttons. Changed all back cover assembled. Software updates stopped after updating to Android 5.0. Built-in programs are updated constantly, but they are already oriented to newer versions of Android and new chips do not work at all.
