Positioning

Most manufacturers have completely abandoned the compact smartphone segment; for some reason it is believed that a small-sized phone should be outdated and not the most modern. There are three companies on the market that produce such devices: Apple (iPhone SE model), Sony (Compact series), and Samsung. The 2017 A3 fulfills the desire of some buyers to get a small, compact phone. The relatively small screen diagonal of 4.7 inches determines the use cases for such a device - first of all, it is needed for calls, and secondly for social networks, instant messengers and web browsing. This smartphone can be safely considered as a second phone, in this capacity it is almost ideal - it works for a long time, has a balanced, modern set of functions. But it is also good as a main device for those who are not looking for a large screen diagonal and are used to compact models.

This model has a set of functions comparable to older devices, although the 2017 A3 has removed a number of features compared to the A5/A7 - the phone has a simpler front and main camera, a lower screen resolution (HD, not FullHD), and no fast charging for the battery , which, however, is not critical, the charging time remains comparable, since the battery capacity is also lower. All the advantages in the form of Samsung Pay (NFC/MST), IP68 water protection remain. As well as the use of exactly the same materials, which distinguishes the model from many of its classmates, it is made perfectly. And, perhaps, this is one of the few compact smartphones on the modern market - the difference between this model and 5-inch devices is very noticeable, the impressions from them are very different. Moreover, these differences are both a plus and a minus, and depend directly on what you are used to.

Design, dimensions, control elements

In the A-series, the design is to some extent inherited from older models, the same body materials, no noticeable simplifications or savings. The A3 model looks expensive and stylish, regardless of what color you choose. There are four color options in total; there are no pink phones in Russia yet.

I have a black A3, it is classic and looks good. The mirror surface reflects the surrounding world, plays in the light, the device looks very interesting, and hand marks are practically invisible. I’ll add here that the screen with a splash screen can always work (AlwaysOn Display function), which none of the competitors have. In the end, we get an unusual device that has no analogues on the market; it can be distinguished from any other at first glance.

If we talk about which color is the best, then I like blue, it is a delicate shade, very unusual, perfect for girls, however, look for yourself.

Please note that the front and back panels are the same color, as is the side metal edging (6000 series aluminum). The device also looks good in pink, but it is definitely only for girls.

The gold phone is somewhat rustic, but everyone has their own tastes.

The fact that the device has a glass back and front does not hinder it at all, since Corning Gorilla Glass 4 is quite reliable and protected from accidental falls, although depending on your luck. This device is completely identical in mechanical protection to the Galaxy S6 EDGE, the quality is at the same level. I once recorded a video about how this phone survives collisions with sharp objects or asphalt, you can watch this video.

The innovation of the A-series in 2017 was water protection, which was taken from the S7/S7 EDGE, the implementation is exactly the same. The SIM card tray is protected by rubber gaskets, the microphones and speakers have membranes, the protection level is IP68, which allows the phone to be at a depth of 1.5 meters for up to half an hour. This does not mean that the phone needs to be washed under water, much less with soap or something similar. But if you drop it in water, nothing will happen to it. There are no models with water protection in this price segment.

Now about the control elements. Under the screen there is a mechanical key, it contains a fingerprint sensor, it is simplified compared to the S7/S7 EDGE, it works a little slower, but there are no problems because of this. Good decision, which just works. On either side of it are two touch keys.

On the left side there are two volume keys, on the right side there is an on/off button. There is a microphone at the bottom and top ends, there is a noise reduction system, it does its job perfectly, you can be heard well in any conditions, even when the wind blows strongly in your face.

At the bottom end there is also a 3.5 mm jack for a headset or headphones, as well as a USB Type C connector for the charger. At the top end there is a tray in which a nanoSIM card and a memory card or two SIM cards are installed. This is a combination tray, so it's worth remembering that the A5/A7 can accommodate both a memory card and two SIM cards at the same time.

The speaker is located on the right side surface, due to this it can overlap in the pocket, and it will not be heard very well. The speaker itself is average in volume, but very pleasant.

Phone dimensions - 135.4 x 66.2 x 7.9 mm, weight - 138 grams. Compact, very small. It can sink in a man's hand, but some people like this size. In clothes it is completely invisible, you can easily forget that you have a phone in your pocket, it doesn’t feel like a constant burden. If you like compact models, then you'll fall in love with the 2017 A3.

Compared to Galaxy A5 2017

Display

The younger model was equipped with a screen with HD resolution, which is not available on such a diagonal a high resolution doesn't play a big role, the picture looks good. But for those who like to peer at the screen and recognize PenTile, I will not recommend this screen; you will see its structure from a distance of ten centimeters, and from five centimeters you can accurately determine the “looseness” of the picture. It’s clear that no one is looking that close to the screen, but who cares? Ordinary people who are not burdened with knowledge about PenTile will simply say that it is a good screen that produces a nice picture, which is also customizable.

Specifications This SuperAMOLED display is as follows: 4.7 inches, SuperAMOLED, HD, 312 ppi, automatic brightness adjustment, automatic brightness adjustment to suit your habits, color profiles, Corning Gorilla Glass 4, AlwaysOn Display.

For my taste, the screen quality is excellent for its class, it has a large brightness reserve automatic mode, the display is easily readable in the sun, just like the previous year’s model (in the S7 EDGE the screen has greater brightness, and as a result, it is even better in the sun).

The screen has an AlwaysOn Display option, that is, you can see application icons, clocks or pictures all the time, the screen operation does not drain the battery much, in 12 hours it’s a couple of percent. Until now, this function has not been widely available in the mid-price segment, which noticeably makes the 2017 A3 stand out and puts it on par with Samsung flagships.

Whatever one may say, the screen in this model is excellent for its positioning and capabilities, nothing more is needed. Considering the scenarios for using the device (a minimum of heavy games with complex graphics as an example), this is the right choice.

Battery

Built-in Li-Ion battery has a capacity of 2350 mAh, fast charging is not supported, but standard Charger charges the battery in 1 hour 35 minutes. That is, the need for fast charging no, due to the small capacity of the battery, charging time is normal. Built-in wireless charging, which the flagship models have, is not here.

In mixed mode, the device lives quietly for two days with 3-4 hours of screen operation, data transmission in LTE and two hours of calls. It all depends on what and how you use it; you can achieve better results, for example, 5-8 hours of screen operation in two days of work, as well as less time.

Playing unconverted video in HD quality in MX Player at maximum brightness - up to 17 hours. This is an excellent indicator considering the size of the battery; many Chinese show comparable results on a 5000 mAh battery.

The operating time of the 2017 A3 becomes its strong point; even with a heavy load, it will not be possible to discharge it faster than in a day; on average, this is two days. Those who use only calls can easily count on 5-6 days of work; of course, it all depends on the operator and the number of these calls. But in general, we can state the fact that operating time is the strong point of this model.

Traditionally, there is a power saving mode, when the screen backlight and processor frequency are limited. In this mode, many will not experience problems with the operation of the device, but the operating time will increase by at least 20 percent. In maximum energy saving mode, everything on the screen turns gray, and the device can provide hours of operation even with a small charge.

Communication capabilities

GPS/GLONASS works perfectly, a cold start takes about ten seconds, navigation works perfectly, there are no problems. By the way, this distinguishes A-brands from many Chinese companies, where the implementation of antennas is such that you can expect anything from typical functions.

Another strong point is the support of almost all necessary LTE frequencies, here the device also manifests itself with strengths(analogs in this price segment cannot boast of this; as a rule, there are savings on antennas).

Finally, the device has NFC and ANT+ support, which will appeal to those who use sports sensors. Bluetooth version 4.2.

If we talk about Wi-Fi, then it uses 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac 2.4+5 GHz, there is a repeater mode (distributing a Wi-Fi signal to other devices as an access point).

The version is USB 2.0, but the USB Type C (1.0) connector is used, so fans of modern connectors will be happy; for the rest, it’s time to come to terms with the transition to the new standard.

Memory, RAM, performance

Samsung uses its own chipsets in A-series models, which can be considered a plus; they are improving year by year. For example, in 2016, chipsets in the A-series were made at 28 nm, now it is 14 nm, which gives an increase in performance and operating time. The chipset in the A3 2017 is Exynos 7780, 8 cores up to 1.6 GHz (Cortex A53), Mali-T830 graphics processor.

In synthetic tests, this processor performed well. IN real life everything also works perfectly, you will not feel any shortcomings in performance, the model is at the same level, and the safety margin will last for at least a couple of years.

The device has 16 GB of internal memory (9.7 GB available), memory cards can be up to 256 GB. RAM 2 GB, which is enough for most consumers. And given the screen resolution, everything becomes very good, this solution is balanced, and there are no noticeable compromises.

Camera

The front camera is 8 megapixels (f/1.9), as usual, there is no autofocus, so it’s worth finding the distance from which the pictures are best taken, this is about half a meter, that is, an outstretched arm. Quality front camera good, but don’t expect anything special from it; after all, the main camera is better. There is a traditional improvement in skin color and tone, you can enlarge your eyes, and at the same time make your face thinner. Girls will definitely like these “improvements”.

The main camera is 13-megapixel (f/1.9), of course, there is autofocus, as well as additional shooting modes, including PRO, but it differs from the flagships, since the camera is simpler. The A3 has a simpler camera than older models, so don't expect much from it. But she copes with her job quite well: taking pictures of pages with text, capturing the world around her - all this can be done. But if you want to shoot beautifully for social networks, then look at flagships or higher-class models.

When recording video, the maximum is FullHD resolution and 30 frames per second.

Look at the examples of pictures and videos, I think they will all tell you about the quality of the camera.

Software

The model was originally released on Android 6.0.1, but many interface elements are similar to what we see in Android 7 and Clean UI on S7/S7 EDGE. I advise you to read about what appeared in Android 7, since this model will soon receive this version OS.

Describe standard Android features I won’t, you can read about them in a detailed review.

Unlike top models, there is a built-in FM radio, which looks like a nice bonus.

When using KNOX, you can install any program in two copies, for example, install two WhatsApp messenger and use them for each SIM card (two numbers, two messengers). You can even correspond with yourself. Exactly the same trick can be done with any software; not a single phone allows you to simultaneously work with two instant messengers on one device with different numbers. Today, many Chinese manufacturers offer something similar in their smartphones, but the implementation is different everywhere.

Impression

The vibration alert is average, the ringer volume is also average - perhaps I would like there to be more headroom, but the phone is still audible, and you can feel it in your pockets when it vibrates. Rather, there is no reserve in terms of volume, but how will anyone perceive this moment? The device cannot be called quiet.

There are practically no compact models on the market, also keep in mind that Samsung has always been able to make its devices smaller than those of its competitors; just remember that 5.2 inches from Samsung is the body of many 4.7-4.9 inch models. So here too, the 2017 A3 turned out to be very compact; only one competitor immediately comes to mind - the iPhone SE. But the price of this compact phone is noticeably higher with similar characteristics and a memory capacity of 16 GB; in Russia it costs 31,990 rubles. In terms of design, it's the complete opposite of the 2017 Galaxy A3. Plus, the iPhone SE has a camera, but there is no water protection, there is, of course, no AlwaysOn Display, the operating time is the same or less.

Also made in a completely different style Sony Xperia X Compact, a small model, but extremely expensive (32-33 thousand rubles). Comparable operating time, slightly faster processor, better camera, no water protection and no AlwaysOn Display. This model definitely does not have any special advantage over the A3, which would cost 10,000 rubles. Its price positioning is close to the iPhone SE.

If there were many competitors in the segment of 5-inch models for the 2017 A5, there are practically no competitors for compact 4.7-inch models with small bodies. The two main competitors are the iPhone SE, as well as the Sony Xperia X Compact, but they are significantly more expensive. Sony will release updated version this smartphone, but the price difference will be even greater. Only large companies can afford to play in the market of compact models, and, unlike Samsung, they see such devices as models with super profits. In my opinion, this is the wrong approach, since a compact smartphone with decent materials cannot be prohibitively expensive, as the A3 2017 proves. For those who are looking for a compact model on Android, this device will be the preferred choice.

Comparisons with the 2017 A5 may be valid, but here you get a larger body size, higher performance, higher screen resolution and about the same battery life in the older model. But you lose that very compactness. These are different worlds in perception based on the size of the case, and this must be taken into account, everything else fades into the background.

The model of the previous season, namely the A3 2016, is weaker in every sense: shorter operating time in any mode, lack of an AlwaysON screen and water protection, and no support for Samsung Pay. On the other hand, if you have such a phone and it works, then you shouldn’t change it to a new one. Wait another generation and then change it. However, it’s worth buying it now as a compact phone if you don’t have money for a new model (the previous one costs 17,990 rubles). Let me remind you that the price of the 2017 A3 is 22,990 rubles.

The bottom line: the 2017 A3 is excellent for those who are looking for a compact smartphone that will focus on calls, instant messengers, browsing the Internet, and to a lesser extent on heavy games. This device is ideal as a second smartphone, as it works for a long time and is compact. The model turned out to be successful, but compact phones remain in demand not by a very wide audience, so the 2017 A3 is not worth expecting any huge sales, it plays only within the niche of compact devices.

Introducing the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) SM-A320F/DS (SM-A320FZKDSER), available in Black color with 16GB of built-in memory.

The updated A-series from Samsung received a premium design, similar to the flagship S7, with a glass body on both sides framed by a metal frame at the ends. For the first time, all smartphones in this series are dust and waterproof. IP68 protection standard. What else is new in the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017)?

Samsung updates Galaxy A3 (2017) SM-A320F/DS

As noted above, the 2017 A3 received a more technologically advanced design. The front of the case is formed by a panel of 2.5D glass, back panel made of 3D glass, the edges are protected by a metal frame. Now the smartphone is protected from dust and moisture. The device feels good in the hand and is comfortable to use in any conditions, even in the rain. In addition to the design, the gadget received modern technical filling: a new, more powerful processor (eight-core versus four cores in the 2016 version), increased RAM, improved selfie camera, changed wired and wireless connection parameters, increased maximum operating speed in LTE networks, the protection of information and the phone itself has been improved, the ability to expand memory has been preserved, and the maximum possible capacity of the memory card has been increased. The device itself has slightly increased in size - 135.4 x 66.2 x 7.9 mm versus 134.5 x 65.2 x 7.3 mm for the 2016 A3, while the battery capacity has been increased and the power consumption of the device has been reduced. The manufacturer also promises many intuitive software features that will take the use of the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) to a new level.

Display

Perhaps the only thing that has not undergone changes in the device is its display. The smartphone screen has retained the size of 4.7 inches, which many consider optimal. You can reach any corner of the display with one hand and not be afraid that the device will slip out of your hands. The screen is made using Super AMOLED technology, which guarantees rich colors and wide viewing angles. The brightness reserve is enough for the image to be clearly visible, even in direct sunlight, plus there is a sensor for automatic backlight adjustment. The resolution is 1280 x 720 pixels with a density of 312 ppi. So, nothing prevents you from enjoying a high-quality and rich picture, under any conditions. And all this is protected by 2.5D Gorilla Glass 4 with an oleophobic coating, which will protect the display not only from scratches, but also from dirt and fingerprints. By the way, you will have to touch the smartphone screen less, because... it has an Always-on Display function, thanks to which all the necessary information is always on the screen.

Cameras

The main one has a resolution of 13 megapixels and is equipped with autofocus and a built-in flash. It supports HDR technology, which allows you to take high-quality images with vibrant colors, even in difficult conditions. It is possible to record video in Full HD format (1920 x 1080 pixels) at 30 frames per second and stereo sound. For the most successful shots, you can apply one of the 16 built-in filters or use the “Food” mode. Setting up the camera is completely simple and intuitive. Selfie lovers will be pleased with the updated 8MP front camera with the ability to install the shutter button anywhere on the display. The display itself acts as a flash. The selfie camera can also shoot Full HD videos at 30 frames per second.

Processor and memory

IN new version The smartphone is equipped with an eight-core Samsung Exynos 7870 processor with a core frequency of 1.6 GHz (the 2016 version had a quad-core Exynos 7578 - 1.5 GHz), and a Mali-T830 video controller is responsible for the graphics. The device's RAM has been increased from 1.5 to 2 GB. The built-in memory can be expanded using a memory card with a maximum capacity of up to 256 GB. Hybrid memory card slot.

Connection

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) SM-A320F/DS is equipped with two Nano-sim slots that can work simultaneously. The device has increased the maximum possible Internet speed from 150 to 300 Mbit/s, thanks to LTE cat. 6. If there is no network, it is possible to connect via Wi-Fi. Communication between a smartphone and other devices and wearable electronics ( smart watch, headphones, fitness bracelets and more) provides Bluetooth 4.2. The following Bluetooth profiles are supported: A2DP, AVRCP, DI, HFP, HID, HOGP, HSP, MAP, OPP, PAN, PBAP. Built-in GPS and GLONASS modules will help you find a quick and accurate route. Wired connection in the 2017 A series it is carried out via USB Type C. The manufacturer took care of users with accessories with a microUSB connector, including them in the package with the phone USB adapter Type C - microUSB.

Nutrition

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) has an increased battery of 2350 mAh compared to its predecessor. An increase of 50 mAh is only a little over 2%. But thanks to modern hardware and optimization, the autonomy figures are much more impressive. Talk time on a 3G network and video playback has been increased by 3 hours (from 2 to 5 p.m.), Internet surfing on 4G networks has been increased by 3 hours (from 1 to 4 p.m.), Internet surfing via Wi-Fi is possible 2 hours longer (from 15 to 17).

It's safe to say that new Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) follows the current trend in the development of wearable gadgets, when one device combines several and provides multiple capabilities. It has become more technologically advanced, autonomous, unpretentious to use, has acquired a fingerprint scanner, and has the ability using Samsung Cloud and Samsung Pay payment service.

If you managed to read our reviews of the updated Galaxy A5 and A7 for 2016, then the design Samsung models Galaxy A3 (2016) you will not find anything new. If you do not take into account the difference in size, the appearance is completely identical. Which in this case we can only rejoice at.

And you can rejoice at the metal, the absence of which many so regretted in the Galaxy S3, S4 and S5, and the Gorilla Glass 4, which covers both the front and back panels of the smartphone. Why this approach is good: the phone looks expensive, stylish, original, and so on according to the list of glorifying epithets. What’s remarkable is that this is indeed the case. The Galaxy A3 (2016) gold we received in gold looks very, very good; subjectively speaking, it’s great. Also released are Galaxy A3 (2016) black, Galaxy A3 (2016) pink and Galaxy A3 (2016) white. And real metal feels pleasantly cool on your hand.

Why then is this approach bad? And the fact that in the vast majority of cases the body of such a smartphone will be non-separable. As a result, you can’t replace the battery on the fly, and if something happens, you’ll pay more for repairs: it’s more difficult for a specialist to get to the filling. So in this case, the words “image is nothing” are somewhat misleading.

In addition, during testing, some shortcomings in the metal ends were revealed. In this case, they were so smooth that during a conversation the phone gently slipped out of the hand. As a result, I had to support it from below with my little finger, and this is not very convenient. When I tried to squeeze the device tighter, it slipped out even faster. In the case of the Galaxy A5 and A7, no such problems were noticed. Perhaps their wider bodies are better suited to a man's hand.

This is perhaps the only negative point. If we talk about the advantages, we cannot help but recall devices from Sony from the Xperia Z and Xperia M lines. Sony also decided to experiment with glass and metal, but, as it turned out, not always successfully. For example, the Sony Z5 Premium, a smartphone with a 4K screen, has a metal back panel with a mirror surface. And the Xperia Z3 and the recent M5 are covered with glass. In both cases, the panels collect all fingerprints, and the excellent appearance is “killed” in just a couple of minutes. The only salvation is the case, which will not suit every buyer of an expensive smartphone.

It is possible that Samsung specialists knew about this problem with Sony devices, since this incident did not happen again with either the old models from the Galaxy A line or any of the updated models. In our case, with a gold design, fingerprints on the back panel are not visible at all. And the oleophobic coating on the front glass makes it easy to remove all traces of use.

Overall, the design and build of the Galaxy A3 (2016) should have been awarded the highest score if we used this rating system. A non-separable case is a price to pay for the image, and problems with girth will be considered subjective.

Connectors and controls

Again no surprises for those who have read the previous reviews. However, the only note: the Galaxy A3 (2016) does not have a fingerprint scanner. That's it, now you can scroll further.

As per tradition, we will fully describe each connector and control element. And while we're on the subject, let's start with an element that is traditional for everyone Samsung smartphones– from the mechanical “Home” button.

Double-clicking launches the camera application, even when the display is off. When held for a long time it starts Google app. It is possible that in the vastness Google Play You can find a number of applications that allow you to modify the behavior of the button. Although for this, most likely, you will have to obtain “superuser” rights.

On the sides of the mechanical button there are touch-sensitive “Menu” and “Back”. They are visible only when the backlight is on. The brightness level is acceptable and does not dazzle the eyes in the dark.

Above the display there is a front camera eye, an earpiece, proximity and light sensors. LED indicator no - there is some strange fluctuation in all new Samsung smartphones.

On the right side at the top there is a power button, below it is a tray for SIM cards and memory cards. Let us remind you that the Galaxy A3 (2016) supports the nanoSIM format.

The tray can accommodate either two SIM cards, or one SIM card and a microSD memory card up to 128 GB. Our short video will tell you more about the installation:

The right side has separate metal volume control buttons.

The top end is almost empty: only a noise-canceling microphone and antenna leads are located here.

The connector for connecting headphones and a headset is located at the bottom end. For music lovers, this is a more convenient option. Next to the 3.5 mm audio jack there is a microUSB port, the main speaker, a call microphone and a pair of antenna leads.

On the back of the device, in addition to the logo, you can see the peephole of the main camera, the lens of which protrudes slightly forward, and an LED flash. The lens is protected around the perimeter by a metal frame.

In a word, a standard and convenient set of controls. The only remark can be made to the non-separable case, but, as we have already said, this is a feature of many smartphones with a metal case.

Case for Galaxy A3 (2016)

Buying a case or cover for the Galaxy A3 (2016) at the beginning of 2016 is not so easy - the handset is very new. But in any case, they will be released both by various specialized companies and by Samsung itself.

For example, this book case for the Galaxy A3 (2016) will be available starting in February 2016.

Screen

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016) features a 4.7-inch diagonal display. The resolution is 1280x720 pixels, pixel density is 312 ppi. In our opinion, if the ppi density is at the level of 320 and above, then you don’t have to worry about any pixelation; it will be difficult to notice the “ladder” with the naked eye.

By the way, the old Galaxy A3 model is equipped with a 4.5-inch diagonal screen with qHD resolution, i.e. 960x540 pixels. The density in this case was 244 ppi. Also a good value, although, of course, 312 is noticeably better.

The matrix is made using Super AMOLED technology. By the way, Samsung practically does not recognize IPS; smartphones with such a matrix can be counted on the fingers of one hand. So or TFT for budget models, or AMOLED for everyone else.

But since we are dealing with an image line, we can safely hope for an excellent screen. Subjectively speaking, in terms of brightness and color rendition, the Galaxy A3 (2016) outshone all smartphones with IPS screens that were nearby during the test. The latter seemed dull, the colors muted. Now we present the measurement results.

White brightness is 387.83 cd/m2. We received exactly the same value during brightness measurements for the new Galaxy A7 (2016) model, and almost the same for the A5. The value is not a record, but remains at a good average level. It is also worth considering the excellent black color - due to the characteristics of this type of matrix, its brightness is zero.

As for the A5 and A7 models, in the settings you can choose one of four color profiles. We measured the color gamut for Adaptive and Basic. In the first case, the coverage significantly exceeds the sRGB space, the colors become more saturated. Some users may find the colors of such an image too “screaming”; for them, a more “calm” Main profile is provided, which almost exactly replicates sRGB and comes close to the “soft” IPS colors so beloved by many.

The white balance with the Main profile selected is close to optimal: the color temperature ranges from 6800-7000K with a reference value of 6500K. If you switch to the Adaptive Profile, colors become cooler, as evidenced by a color temperature of around 8000K.

The deviations of the obtained gamma curves from the reference ones are very small. This means that the picture is displayed with the required brightness.

The screen supports five simultaneous clicks. Frankly speaking, we are already accustomed to ten, although to be completely honest, in practice we use no more than two or three.

Let us remind you again about the ability to select color ranges in the “Screen Mode” section of the screen settings. In addition to Adaptive and Basic, there are also profiles “Movie AMOLED” and “Photo AMOLED”. Their name speaks for itself.

Used to protect the display strained glass Gorilla Glass 4 – both front and back. At a minimum, the front glass is supplemented with an oleophobic coating. In general, there are no complaints about the screen of the Galaxy A3 (2016). On the contrary, compared to the old handset, I would like to note the increased resolution, since qHD was not enough even for a 4.5-inch screen.

Camera

The resolution of the main and front cameras does not differ from older models - 13 MP and 5 MP, respectively. The lens aperture is also the same - f/1.9. The only immediately noticeable difference among the characteristics is that there is no optical image stabilization system.

The camera app is typical for smartphones Samsung latest models. Graphically, the interface is simple, almost to the point of asceticism, but at the same time, the set of settings allows you to work well on the shooting modes.

Additional settings for working with focus, white balance, light sensitivity and exposure compensation are available in Pro mode, exactly as for the updated A5 and A7 models.

The maximum resolution for photos taken with both cameras is achieved at an aspect ratio of 4:3. The prerogative of the maximum with a 16:9 ratio is currently available only to flagship devices.

Video resolution is set in the settings for each camera.

In the conditions of gray winter everyday life and in the absence of an image stabilization system, the photographs nevertheless turn out to be quite clear and detailed. Automation almost always selects the correct white balance, only getting slightly confused when there is a lot of snow. In order to obtain relatively high-quality photographs indoors and in the dark, it is advisable not to move, so as not to get a blurry picture.

You can see an example of shooting video with Full HD resolution by watching the attached video. In our opinion, despite not the best weather conditions, the video quality can be assessed as a good average level, on the verge of “above average”.

The front camera has a resolution of 5 MP. The quality of photos for the front camera is also very good, we suggest you check it with specific examples.

The maximum video resolution for the front camera is Full HD. The image quality is more than enough for video chatting and is quite sufficient for other selfie tasks.

In general, we were personally pleased with the quality of both photos and videos obtained from both cameras. In good lighting the picture is excellent; under a gloomy sky the quality is slightly lost, but also remains at a fairly high level. In more difficult conditions, when compared with the reviewed Galaxy A5 and A7 models, the absence of an image stabilizer becomes noticeable.

Specifications Galaxy A3 (2016)

Looking at the list of specifications, we can say that the Galaxy A3 (2016) with model designation SM-A310F is a modern workhorse with a small power reserve. But before we delve into the details, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the exact list of smartphone parameters.

As our opponent, we chose a slightly older model, but similar in characteristics. It is equipped with a fairly popular mid-range processor, the Snapdragon 410. According to Samsung's original plans, the Galaxy A3 (2016) was supposed to have the same processor, but at the last moment the decision changed. Also, both smartphones are equipped with approximately the same graphics accelerators, HD-resolution screens and 1.5 GB of RAM per brother.

As you can see in the screenshots from the CPU-Z application, the processor model is identified as Exynos 7580. In fact, this is not entirely true, we have a smartphone with an Exynos 7 Quad processor (Exynos 7578). It includes four Cortex-A53 cores operating at a clock frequency of 1.5 GHz. Obviously, as a result of some of their “undercover” games, Samsung chose to replace the Snapdragon 410 with its own model, albeit a little more powerful.

The processor also includes a Mali-T720 MP2 graphics accelerator. Samsung does not explain whether there are differences between the accelerators on the Exynos 7578 and Exynos 7580 processors (used in the older Galaxy A5 and A7), so it’s easier to evaluate the result in practice.

The amount of RAM is 1.5 GB. This is more than the old Samsung Galaxy A3 model and is quite enough for the younger model. Approximately 850-870 MB will be “eaten up” by the operating system and the TouchWiz shell, the rest will go to the user. In principle, this is not so little.

The built-in memory is 16 GB, of which about 11 GB is available. Memory cards up to 128 GB are supported. Additional features worth noting include support for LTE category 4 and an NFC module.

Performance testing

Let us remind you that the rival was the Samsung Galaxy J5 with a Snapdragon 410 processor, which Samsung decided to replace with its Exynos 7578. What did this lead to?

In system-wide tests, this resulted in a draw. The lag in each case is small.

A similar picture is observed in the graphics test. Both smartphones showed excellent and almost identical results.

But subsequently, the Galaxy J5 was no longer able to surpass the new product. In testing gaming performance, a modern test showed that the A3 (2016) scored more than one and a half times higher.

The fact that the result of the previous benchmark was not accidental is confirmed by Smartbench 2012, where the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016) emerged victorious in both the gaming and system-wide testing parts. However, the test is quite old, so to be sure, we’ll do one more.

The browser test confirmed the advantages of the new processor from Samsung. Let us remind you that in this test the lower the result, the better, since we are talking about time costs.

Time comparison battery life led to a draw, although J5 had slightly more capacious battery: 2600 mA*h versus 2300 mA*h. The reason is probably that the Galaxy A3 (2016) has a smaller screen and a more modern processor.

A more precise reason for the victory of the Galaxy A3 (2016) can be determined by the detailed picture of battery consumption. Traditionally, 3D games are significantly ahead, which is logical. However, other indicators show slightly lower consumption than we are used to seeing, especially 2D games and surfing the Internet via cellular network(3G/4G).

As with the A5 and A7 models, several energy saving options are available in the settings. One of them is application optimization, which allows you to customize their operation and receipt of notifications. The second is a decrease in processor performance, screen brightness, etc. And there is an extreme energy saving mode, which, for the sake of economy, converts the entire image to black and white. Thanks to the AMOLED screen, this allows you to significantly limit energy consumption.

Thus, the Galaxy A3 (2016) was in no way inferior, and in some places even surpassed the Galaxy J5, at the same time showing the superiority of the “native” processor over the competitive one. However, the J5 belongs either to the budget or mid-range segment (at its very beginning), so victory over it is not a super-achievement for a modern fashion smartphone, even a junior one in the line.

Games on Galaxy A3 (2013)

The situation with games on this smartphone is as follows. As you can see when watching our video review, the Galaxy A3 (2016) can handle even the heavy shooter N.O.V.A. 3, however with some “brakes”. Which is not surprising, since this game “flies” only on devices older than high level with a good graphics accelerator.

The same goes for some other “top” games. You can play, but in some cases you should reduce the quality of the graphics, or be prepared for slowdowns in particularly tense moments.

However, you should understand that the Galaxy A3 (2016) is not a smartphone designed for such games. But it copes well with all average games, not to mention birds or zombies.

The results of our testing are as follows:

  • Riptide GP2: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Asphalt 7: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Asphalt 8: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Modern Combat 5: excellent, the game does not slow down;
  • N.O.V.A. 3: Some delays are visible;

  • Dead Trigger: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Dead Trigger 2: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Real Racing 3: Some delays are visible;

  • Need For Speed: No Limits: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Shadowgun: Dead Zone: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Frontline Commando: Normandy: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Frontline Commando 2: Some delays are visible;

  • Eternity Warriors 2: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Eternity Warriors 3: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Eternity Warriors 4: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Trial Xtreme 3: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Trial Xtreme 4: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Dead Effect: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Dead Effect 2: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Plants vs Zombies 2: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Iron Man 3: Some delays are visible;
  • Dead Target: excellent, the game does not slow down.

As you can see, most games work perfectly, with delays occurring only in the heaviest applications.

BY

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016), like its colleagues in the updated line, runs Android 5.1. An update to Android 6.0 is not directly promised, but most likely it will happen. At the same time, we believe that the systems of each of the three models will be updated.

There are practically no differences from the A5 and A7 in terms of software, if you do not take into account the lack of customization for the fingerprint scanner. Among the applications, we only noticed the absence of S Health, but we see no reason that would prevent us from installing it ourselves.

Installed on top of the system branded shell TouchWiz. Among other things, it allows you to customize shortcuts in the drop-down notification shade, set your own orders in the application menu and change quick access to main settings. It would seem like little things, but they are what make working with a smartphone much more convenient and easier.

Among the “chips” you can indulge in smart display shutdown and smart notifications. The correct operation of functions does not reach 100%, but as additional options for a smartphone, why not.

Of the pre-installed applications, we note the set from Microsoft as a whole, and OneDrive app in particular. When registering, in addition to the free 15 GB of cloud storage, the user receives an additional 100 GB for two years.

If the smartphone is equipped NFC module, then it can be used for payment. The Ubank mobile wallet is designed to facilitate this. And Kasperrsky Internet Security will monitor the security of the smartphone.

The call log, dialer, and work with contacts are quite traditional for Android. If you had a smartphone from any manufacturer running any version of this OS, then you can easily deal with calls, as well as adding and editing contacts.

Among the branded applications, we can note Galaxy Apps - a store from Samsung, a Smart Manager aggregator for monitoring battery or memory consumption, as well as for protecting the system, S Voice - controlling a device via voice, Store - access to the Samsung store with detailed description each product.

The rest of the set of settings and applications has been described an infinite number of times and does not contain any surprises.

Conclusion

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016) is the youngest in the updated fashion line of smartphones. Externally and in terms of the materials used, it does not differ at all from older models, which in this case we consider only a plus. The buyer can choose one of the phones, focusing on his preferences and financial capabilities, without denying himself the pleasure of buying a beautiful thing.

Performance-wise, the A3 (2016) is relatively good. With everyday applications (browser, social media and chats, calls, navigation, etc.) there will be no problems. The only thing a smartphone cannot do is top games, but the smartphone is not designed for them. The simpler games that Google Play is littered with are, without exaggeration, going great.

The only significant drawback in our opinion is the slippery body. The phone is too beautiful to be encased in a case, but it’s also awkward to hold. Let's hope this is subjective, although just for fun we compared the usability of the old and new A3 models. It turned out that holding the first A3 in your hands is noticeably more convenient. But it has a screen with qHD resolution and other characteristics are worse.

Galaxy A3 (2016) price

At the time of writing this article, you could buy a Galaxy A3 (2016) for 19 thousand rubles. In our opinion, the price for such a device is more than adequate. A brand, a beautiful metal and glass case, an excellent screen, performance - all this deserves 19 thousand.

But it was not without competitors. In first place among the rivals you can put one of next smartphones from Sony: Xperia C4, C4 Dual, M4 Aqua. Each of them more or less fits into our price range and has a representative appearance. For example, Sony Xperia C4 Black for 21 thousand rubles. It is equipped with a 5.5-inch IPS screen with Full HD resolution, an 8-core MT6752 processor from MediaTek, a Mali-T760 accelerator, 2 GB of RAM, a 13 MP main camera, and supports LTE and GLONASS. The body is made of plastic.

If you take a phone not for image, but for yourself, at the same time cheat a little and order it from our eastern friends, then you can take a look at the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3. Its price is slightly lower than that of the A3 (2016), but it has 5.5- inch IPS screen with Full HD resolution, 8-core Helio X10 with clock frequency 2 GHz, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal memory, fingerprint scanner, 4000 mAh battery and metal case.

But if we have to have an image, then we simply have to remember smartphones from Apple. If we talk about price, the closest competitor to the South Korean beauty is the 5S model for 24 thousand. However, it is equipped with a 4-inch screen, so we decided to go with the younger iPhone 6. The screen sizes are the same, the resolution is also practically the same. At the same time, the iPhone 6 is equipped only with a dual-core processor and a gigabyte of RAM, it does not have a slot for memory cards and has a smaller battery capacity. The main camera takes pictures with a resolution of 8 MP, the front one – 1.2 MP. But the cost of the iPhone 6 is more than twice the cost of the Galaxy A3 (2016)!

It is unlikely that Huawei P8 Lite can be confidently called a fashion device. But still, the smartphone attracts attention with its appearance. On this moment it costs a couple of thousand rubles less than the Galaxy A3 (2016), while differing little in size and characteristics. Thus, Huawei P8 Lite received a 5-inch IPS screen with HD resolution, an 8-core HiSilicon Kirin 620 processor with a clock frequency of 1.2 GHz, a Mali-450 accelerator, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory, a 13 MP main camera and battery capacity 2200 mAh. The downsides are the plastic body, modest battery life, and inexpensive screen.

Everyone understands that image costs money. If the image is packaged in a waterproof case, then you will have to pay even more. About 26 thousand, if we are talking about Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. Externally modern Sony models are designed in the same key - both flagships and relatively inexpensive models, so you don’t have to worry about the appearance of the smartphone. The characteristics are also good: 4.6-inch IPS screen with HD resolution, quad-core Snapdragon 801 with a clock frequency of 2.5 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory, 20 MP camera with video recording at 2160p resolution, battery capacity 2800 mAh. In short, the overpayment is completely justified.
