Microsoft Lumia 640 dual phone. An operating system is a system software that manages and coordinates the operation of hardware components in a device

Iron, texture, more logical android (IMHO)

Nothing except the price. I've never had a worse smartphone. Crooked operating system, bad store, couldn’t set up Yandex mail, Microsoft lost respect for this product!

Waterproof (bathed in the bath 2 times, didn’t even pass out while swimming) + Tenacious, strong; + Value for money; + Good video quality; + Convenient and simple operating system; + 2 SIM cards; + NFC.

Holds a charge - Good sound from the speakers - Good signal reception - 2 sim - High-quality display - Quite a good camera

Synchronization, but it would be completely absurd if Windows did not synchronize with Windows. And I also realized that this is the best grandfather phone

Convenient quick access menu, many modern functions - LTE, NFC. The most convenient thing is contact synchronization via iCloud and other databases from other manufacturers, no fuss with transferring contacts, a mega-convenient thing for such a cheap and simple device, I haven’t found anything similar on other, much more expensive devices. An excellent camera for such a device, it takes videos and photos with equal quality. The menu is quite simple in content and logic. 2 full slots for SIM cards. Separate slot for a removable memory card. Replaceable body panels. There is an effective battery saving mode. Availability of built-in Microsoft applications - mobile Office and Power Point. Timely free updates phone firmware, which according to official reports

The biggest plus is price/quality! If you need a smartphone because everyone has a smartphone, but you have a push-button one, this is the phone for you!

I purchased this device in August 2015, six months after its announcement. Attracted, first of all, appearance, but also the unusualness of the OS. Before that there were phones on Android and iOS - so here Windows Mobile 8.1 installed on the Lumia 640 Lte DualSim at that time looked very fresh and advantageous. A good camera, user-friendly interface, replaceable panels, which allows you to personalize the device.

Camera. I especially liked the macro photography. He takes best photographs in sunny weather and on the street, but at night and at home it’s already so-so, but sometimes it turns out cool. System. No matter how much people swear at it, I liked it much more than android (I had experience with flyiq446 and huawei honor y5 II), BUT I’m absolutely not demanding when it comes to applications, I don’t play games and I’m a rare guest on social networks. That is, I used a flashlight (which, by the way, was not preinstalled, which caused some shock), office, reader, 2GIS, weather and VK. There were no complaints about the operation of these applications, I don’t know about the others. Charger. Well, personally, with my original charger, it charged from 0 to 100 in ~2 hours, and with constant Internet use it lasted for exactly a day, or even two. Lots of space. No, seriously, I don’t understand what people are up to

Windows 10 on this phone is a complete disaster. The further Windows is updated, the large quantity Applications stop launching: Viber, Instagram, I had to roll back to 8.1

The main disadvantages after 1.5 years of use are that the operating system freezes when viewing/opening several pages in Edge browser, I think there is not enough performance. It either goes away on its own - the system seems to restart, or when it happens, you often have to turn the device off and on yourself. When you turn it on, it constantly asks you to check the removable memory card. The general disadvantages are the following: The general obsolescence of the 2017 model and the primitiveness of the menu and its design; in fact, the phone is a small copy of Windows. Peculiarities Windows platforms 10 Mobile - not very good a large number of applications compared to iOS and Google Store, but minimal and slightly more present, although Microsoft has already officially announced that it will close Windows support 10 Mobile, respectively, by 2020 those

The disadvantages for such a price can hardly be called disadvantages - but this is the camera and Windows 8 (OS), on which there are very few applications

I have been using this device for 2.7 years at the time of writing this review. In the last year it has started to slow down a bit. Twice during the entire period of use I did a “hard reset” because the phone “froze” tightly and nothing helped. The reset procedure is unpleasant and takes a lot of time (especially to return everything to normal, fortunately there is a backup copy). Well, and the most important disadvantage (let Windows Mobile fans agree with me) is that Microsoft announced in October 2017 that it would no longer support this OS.

Alas, after a year and a half, glitches appeared. Not fatal and not frequent, but from the category of rare and accurate. Sometimes, when I tried to minimize an application, or open a minimized one, it would freeze and begin to vibrate. The only way out was to remove the battery, because he couldn’t even turn it off on his own. In addition, some kind of camera jamb appeared. When shooting a video, the picture sometimes froze, and sometimes half of the photo turned out to be black. I began to crash from applications, about two or three times in two days, but it could work fine for weeks. Well, at the beginning of January, music stopped working in the VK application.

    Terrible camera, few apps

    1. Good quality screen with a protective coating. Responsive sensor. 2. Two SIM cards. 3. Decent battery life. 4. Smart device, fast work. Optimization at its best. 5. The build quality is good. Sturdy body, but light weight. 6. Upgrade to Windows 10. 7. Replaceable back panels. Beautiful colors.

best OS, battery life, camera, performance

Quite a large battery capacity for that time. Don’t criticize the camera, but this smartphone produces beautiful macro photography, even in 2019. The design for 2015 was not bad at all, that’s the only reason I chose this device. No matter how much you scold the smartphone, it lasted four years, and I think it will last the same amount of time, but only for my grandma. Dropped it several times, never broke. I never took it in for repairs, nothing broke, and if it did break, a magical restart fixed everything.

5" screen fits comfortably in the hand. Removable battery. Windows phone 8.1. Does not freeze or slow down. Works as smoothly as an AK-47.

    1. Decent vibration 2. Excellent operating time! With a 2500 mAh battery, it works as a dialer (including via WhatsApp) for 8 days! 3. favorite game on Windows 10 - SuperVoltage ( Chinese version, but everything is clear there) They say that somewhere there is a recording of conversations and something like information about who is calling (a killer feature of Yandex-fon), but I didn’t understand

Price. At the time of purchase it was 9990 rubles. The screen size is 5.7", which makes it easy to read texts, convenient when typing small texts text documents. Out of the box it runs on Windows 8.1, very easily upgraded to "ten", on new system works almost without brakes. Doesn't get hot after prolonged use. Very good sound. The camera takes pictures very well. When shooting the sky at night, even the stars are visible.

    1. Lack of some applications in the store. 2. Lack of 4G. Perhaps that's all.

Microsoft will no longer support Lumiya as of December 2019. This is their official announcement. There will be no WhatsApp, and there will be no updates

Some applications are missing, some of those that exist are no longer supported and do not work. But those that exist work well better android analogues

In addition to what I write below, I will add. VK has not been updated since 2016, audio recordings are not available there and have been deleted. Some VK videos play without sound. It’s not very realistic to watch anything in a browser, since pages are restarted very often. Notifications from applications sometimes do not arrive. There is some stuttering if you use a toy for a long time. GPS does not work correctly, sometimes it just “dies”. There are even fewer worker applications for 2019. Official updates security will end this year. Conclusion: operating system Windows Phone failed on all fronts.

Microsoft no longer supports winphone 8.1, windows 10 mobile (build 1703) slows down and drains the battery faster.

slightly more thoughtful on Windows 10 than on Windows 8.1

Insufficiently autonomous, when using the Internet, listening to music, watching videos, the battery runs out very quickly. It is quite difficult to find accessories and spare parts. Not well developed Charger from the box. The phone has the ability wireless charging, but the back cover is ordinary. So you need to look for a cover and a charger. There is no one-touch payment option, so the NFC module is not very suitable for Russia, but the breadth of its use is of increasing interest. I usually turn it off to save battery. Not a very fast navigator; it takes a very long time to connect to satellites. There is not enough internal memory (the system eats up to 3.5 GB out of almost 8).

Windowsphone. yes yes yes, this is both wealth and disadvantage. There are critically few programs that are made only for Android and iPhone. It started to slow down after half a year, but now it’s just extremely difficult to work on it. There is very little memory.

Three varieties of Lumia 640 were presented: with one and two SIM cards, as well as with and without an LTE module. We tested “Microsoft Lumia 640 LTE two SIM cards” - this is the official Russian name.

Microsoft Lumia 640 LTE DS is a representative of the new Windows Phone line. The continuity with the previous generation of Lumia is obvious and predictable, except that the Microsoft logo has taken the place of the Nokia logo. The rest is the usual Lumia, budget model, with an increased screen size, RAM capacity, and nice gifts like 30 GB of OneDrive and an annual subscription to Office 365 compared to the same indicator for the 630. But is this enough to defeat state-run Android phones?

⇡ Design

Although the Nokia logo has disappeared from the body, don't be fooled, this is still a Lumia. It has the same solid back panel, curved at the edges, and all the hardware is inserted into it. True, the edges have become a little sharper, and holding the phone is not as comfortable, but it’s still not a 640 XL that digs into your hand.

The plastic from which the lid is made can be glossy or matte. There are traces left on the glossy one, so the second option is preferable. By the way, we were lucky - we have exactly this one on our test. In general, a replaceable cover leaves scope for creativity, and the maintainability of such a case is higher. A very nice little detail, forgotten by most manufacturers.

For a smartphone with a 5-inch display, the device is quite large. Like its brothers, the 640 doesn't have very narrow bezels, but typing with one hand is quite possible. The headphone output is on the top, the micro-USB input is on the bottom. There are two inside Micro-SIM slot and one microSD. It's inside - to replace anything, you have to remove the cover and battery. By the way, it’s better to get a microSD card right away - the device comes with an almost shameful 8 gigabytes of memory. But you can expand it by another 128 GB.

⇡ Screen

The five-inch IPS display has a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels (294 pixels per inch). This, of course, is not 4K, but for this price segment and processor it is quite suitable. And there are no problems with reading small text, although competitors are increasingly using Full HD, and therefore there are no problems with clarity at all.

The smartphone display is protected from damage by Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

The screen has high contrast, partly thanks to ClearBlack technology, making it a pleasure to watch movies on such a display. But it’s difficult to read from it outdoors, especially if you’ve previously used something with a Super-AMOLED screen. The maximum brightness value of 403 cd/m² does not help with readability problems in the sun.

In general, the 640 has very flexible brightness settings. You can not only select automatic or manual modes (the sensor is located to the right of the eye front camera), but also adjust brightness profiles. There are three of them, and each can be changed. The sensitivity of the automatic mode is also adjusted.

There are also three color profiles: standard (display parameters were measured in it), bright and cold, plus an “additional” profile containing more subtle settings.

The “cool” profile increases color temperature, and the “bright” profile increases saturation. Standard is something in between.

The color temperature goes a little towards cooler shades, but adjusting it in the “advanced” mode takes a couple of minutes.

Let's summarize. The display has a decent color gamut, close to sRGB, and good color balance. In addition, extensive settings will allow you to adapt it to your needs. But the oleophobic coating did not justify itself. However, this does not in any way affect the overall impression of the display - the quality of the screen is high and it is pleasant to use. Unless PPI is not enough.

⇡ Sound

Like many budget phones, the Lumia 640 LTE DS is equipped with two speakers and one microphone. The telephone speaker is loud enough and not squeaky, but the main speaker wheezes at maximum volume. But this is not scary, because it is located on back cover. So if you put your smartphone on something soft, you won’t hear wheezing, or anything else.

⇡ Hardware - and how it works with Windows Phone

The Lumia 640 LTE DS uses a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with a frequency of 1.2 GHz, which also includes Adreno 305 graphics. RAM is only 1 gigabyte. It seems like a little, but Asphalt 8 does not slow down - we can thank the optimization and low resolution.

The 640 LTE DS runs Windows Phone 8.1 (Denim), about which quite a lot has been said. Using WP has become more and more enjoyable lately, and this is not counting the upcoming release of the “top ten”, which users who have signed up for beta testing can already install and try. It's not even a matter of optimizing the system - competitors like Android and iOS are so overgrown with functions that they lag even on top processors. This, of course, is not a definite minus, but the simplicity of WP 8.1 evokes a strange sensation. On the one hand, it does not slow down or freeze. On the other hand, it's boring. It's like it's a PlayStation OS that's only needed to run the game. However, this should not be taken as a conclusion based on a study of the system. Rather, this is a feeling caused, perhaps, by the stinginess of the interface. And one more thing: this is a very easy-to-understand system for those who, for example, have never owned a smartphone.

Applications are always a touchy subject for WP. On the one hand, there are more and more of them every day, and something well-known like WhatsApp will definitely be found in WPStore. On the other hand, many well-known companies like Facebook order applications for Windows Phone from third-party developers. The result is sadness and pain. So the situation has not changed yet - if you are hunting for the latest applications or gaming, the 640 is not for you.

But there are a lot of bonuses out of the box: HERE Maps navigation, 30 GB of OneDrive, an annual subscription to Office 365 and some fun photo apps like Lumia Refocus.

⇡ Camera

The Lumia camera is always both hardware and software. Both of them used to be great, but with the arrival of Microsoft everything suddenly changed. A newly formed department began to deal with optics, which practically ruined the best that Lumia had. Everything is fine with the software - as always.

For a long time, Microsoft remained outside the smartphone market. Then employees developed the Windows Mobile operating system specifically for phones. Even Samsung devices received it.

In recent years, the company collaborated with Nokia, but later devices with Windows Phone OS began to be produced under the Microsoft brand. One of these devices was the Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual Sim model. The phone's release date is 2015.

For a long time, the company did not release five-inch mid-price smartphones with HD resolution. This decision was incomprehensible, since such devices were in demand 2-3 years ago.

Microsoft Lumia 640 LTE Dual Sim is an inexpensive but powerful solution for those who love two SIM cards in one case and want real support LTE networks.

Specifications

Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual Sim received an inexpensive processor from Qualcomm paired with an Adreno video accelerator. Although this combination cannot boast high performance, but it looks preferable to the same price pair of MediaTek and Mali.

note

The device has two cameras, it supports LTE and has NFC.

Options and packaging

The hero of the review is sold in a box typical of Lumia smartphones. Top cover decorates the image of the phone. In the left and right corners you can see the manufacturer's logo and the model name, respectively.

Information about technical specifications There is practically nothing on the packaging - all the data is presented in the form of a few pictures on a sticker. The packaging consists of two parts, where one is placed inside the other.

Even the most ardent fans of including a minimum of accessories can envy the configuration of the Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual Sim. Inside the box, in addition to the device itself, the following elements are located:

  • Charger;
  • User manual;
  • Warranty card;
  • Battery.

Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual Sim package.

As you can see, the equipment is modest to the extreme. The charger is one-piece, so even the Micro-USB synchronization cable will have to be purchased independently. The same applies to protective films, headphones, etc. It is also not entirely clear why the battery is not in the smartphone.

Video

Appearance and design

Based on their design, all Lumia phones can be divided into three categories. The first includes rectangular and strict devices made of metal with sharp edges. The second category includes phones similar to the first, but only in a plastic case. The third group consists of models with rounded edges that smoothly transition from one to the other.

Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual Sim is a typical representative of the third category of smartphones. It is available in four colors.

It is important to know

In addition to the classic black and white colors, the phone can be found in orange and bright blue colors.

Color Microsoft solutions Lumia 640 Dual Sim.

On the front panel, one cannot help but notice the wide frames on both the sides, top and bottom. There are no elements under the screen except the speaking microphone. Navigation keys are on the display. At the top of the front panel of the phone, the manufacturer placed the front camera eye, sensors, a speaker hole and its logo.

On the reverse side you can see the main camera with flash, speaker and company logo. The cover is removed and provides access to a removable battery, two trays for installing SIM cards, as well as a slot for a MicroSD memory card, which, if necessary, 8 GB of built-in storage can be expanded.

A plastic cover with an NFC antenna glued to the inside covers the phone body and extends onto the side edges. The device is assembled with high quality, there are no creaks when the case is squeezed.

note

The disadvantage of the design is the lack of recesses with which you could comfortably remove the cover. Therefore, you have to press on the camera lens so that the body squeezes out, and a millimeter of plastic appears, which you can catch with your fingernail.

The left sidebar was left without any elements. The hardware keys are located on the right side. The adjustment button is located above, and below it is the on/off key for the phone. Both elements protrude above the plane of the right side panel, making them easy to feel with your fingers. At the top and bottom ends there is an audio output for connecting a wired headset and a Micro-USB port, respectively.

The smartphone is easy to use. It is compact and fits easily into pockets without causing inconvenience when walking. The dimensions of the Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual Sim are 141.3x72.2x8.8 mm, and the device weighs 145 g.

Will be useful

The phone is comfortable to hold, but the plastic design is quite slippery. It is also convenient to use with one hand.

Display

The hero of the review received. Its diagonal is 5 inches and its resolution is 1280x720 pixels. Covered matrix protective glass Third generation Gorilla Glass. The pixel density is 294 ppi. The screen is of high quality, but it is impossible to highlight any features that would distinguish it from a number of displays of other smartphones with such dimensions and resolution.

Thanks to the light sensor, the device has an automatic brightness adjustment mode. It works quickly, but adjusts the brightness not always accurately. The sensor supports up to four simultaneous clicks.

note

If there are more touches, the capacitive sensor confuses them and also begins to behave inappropriately. However, four simultaneous touches are enough for any average person.

icrosoft Lumia 640 Dual Sim received an IPS display.

In the settings, you can select and independently adjust one of three brightness profiles:

  • Short;
  • Average;
  • High.

You can also adjust the sensitivity of the light sensor. In complete darkness, the brightness level drops to 3.2, 12, and 25 cd/m2 if the sensitivity slider is set to the minimum, standard and maximum values, respectively. The second two values are suitable for comfortable use of the phone in complete darkness. 3.2 cd/m2 – the brightness is too low, but it’s suitable if you use the device after waking up in the middle of the night.

Will be useful

When using the phone in the sun, the maximum brightness reserve is enough to make out the information on the display. You can also activate an option in the settings that improves visibility in the sun.

The image on the smartphone screen is characterized by saturation and natural color reproduction. If you look at the display at an angle of 45 degrees, the picture loses contrast. Also, with significant deviations of the gaze from the perpendicular, the brightness decreases.

Software

The hero of the review received Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 with the Lumia Denim package as an OS. Android adherents will find it difficult to understand the operating system interface at first. Traditionally, the smartphone has received many applications, among which the following should be noted:

8 GB of ROM does not seem like a “disaster”, since the user, when purchasing a Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual Sim, gets 15 GB “in the cloud” OneDrive for data storage, as well as another 15 GB additionally for backup copy photographs. In addition, the owner of a Microsoft smartphone is provided with free subscription on Office 365. Its validity period is 1 year.

Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual Sim received Windows Phone 8.1 as an OS.

Other pre-installed applications include Here Drive+ and Here Maps. The smartphone has lost the Here Transit program, but it can be installed without problems from the company store.

The developers and those who like to take photographs have not been spared. So, there are five separate applications in the device memory:

  • Lumia Photos Alive;
  • Lumia Moments;
  • Lumia Selfie;
  • Lumia Camera;
  • Lumia Stories.

Sound

The smartphone has two speakers and one microphone. There is no noise reduction system. The speech speaker is characterized by a high volume level. It also does not distort the sound.

note

Despite the absence of an auxiliary microphone, the interlocutor's voice can be heard well even with external noise.

Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual Sim has high-quality sound.

As for the multimedia speaker, it is loud, but the quality is inferior to the conversational speaker. When playing music at full volume, wheezing is heard. The speaker is located on the rear panel and has a small hole, making it easy to muffle. If you cover the speaker with something, the sound is practically inaudible, and vibrations go through the body.

Performance

The heart of the Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual Sim – budget processor Snapdragon 400. It is paired with Adreno 305. The device also has 8 GB of user memory along with 1 GB of RAM.

The hardware platform is no different, except that it can be seen in countless mobile devices. At the time the smartphone entered the market, the chipset was almost two years old. Initially it was intended for phones in the mid-price segment, but then migrated to cheaper devices. The “stuffing” of the review hero is several times inferior to the flagship processors that the Lumia 930 Lumia 1520 devices received, but it allows you to perform all simple tasks. But it should be noted that The hardware has no power reserve.

In addition to Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual Sim, devices received such hardware Nokia Lumia 735/830.

Will be useful

In the PhoneMark test, the review hero scores 900 points, while the other two models score 800 points. In the AnTuTu benchmark, all three devices show approximately the same results – 11.5-12 thousand points.

The heart of the Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual Sim is the budget Snapdragon 400 processor.

The same situation is observed in the processor test in MultiBench 2 - 15.5-16 thousand points. In the graphics chip test, the review hero is inferior to other models, gaining 44.5 thousand points. But the lag is small - the result of the Nokia Lumia 735 is 46 thousand points, and the Lumia 830 gets 46.5 thousand points. By the way, if in AnTuTu the Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520 with the 800th “dragon” scored twice as much as devices with Snapdragon 400 “on board”, then in MultiBench in the “Graphics” mode the results of the flagships are on par with the indicators cheap models. The difference between Adreno - 305 and 320 is not so significant.

In general, the hardware platform was still sufficient at the time of the release of Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual Sim. More demanding games were launched at medium and minimum settings.

It is important to know

The functioning of SIM cards is built in the traditional way, if one SIM card works in 3/4G, the other functions only in 2G.

Camera

The Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual Sim has an 8-megapixel module with autofocus and flash.

The main camera received an 8-megapixel module with autofocus, its own flash, f/2.2 aperture and a focal length of 28 mm. Video is recorded in a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 pixels.

The front camera is equipped with a sensor with a resolution of 0.9 megapixels and an f/2.4 aperture. The camera does not have a flash or autofocus.

note

The maximum video recording resolution is 1280x720 pixels.

The weak points of the cameras are their resolutions. The main one shoots well, considering the 8-megapixel resolution. She combines good optics with moderate software processing. The camera copes with document processing and macro photography. Photos have a high level of sharpness and detail. The front camera takes pictures typical of a 1-megapixel module. Their qualities, together with processing in one of graphic editors, enough for publication on social networks.

The range of “Windows backgrounds” has been expanded with the following models. Four variants of Lumia 640: single-SIM and 3G, single-SIM and LTE, dual-SIM and 3G, dual-SIM and LTE. Also presented to the public were four variants of the Lumia 640 XL with a similar combination of distinctive features. The younger model Lumia 640 is equipped with a 5″ screen, while the Lumia 640 XL has a slightly larger screen – 5.7″. Considering that all smartphones will be sold at the same time, and the versions with one and two SIM cards will have the same price, the question inevitably arises: what were Microsoft marketers actually thinking about? The lineup Lumia is already crowded with devices, and you can only figure out how one of them differs from another if you read the lists of characteristics and compare them line by line. The release of four pairs of smartphones with the same price and the difference only in the number of SIM card slots does not make the process of choosing a mobile companion any easier. Why even release identical smartphones on the market with support for one or two SIM card slots with the same price tags? After all, it is clear that, all other things being equal, buyers will give preference to models with support for two SIM cards.

Be that as it may, at the time of preparing the review, the Microsoft website had information about only four variants of the smartphone: 640 LTE, 640 DS LTE, 640 DS 3G and 640 XL DS 3G. Further in the text of the review, the abbreviation “DS” means support for two SIM cards. For all variants of the smartphone, several body colors are available: white, black, red and blue. Some of them were in stock, others were only available by pre-order.

The basis for the devices of the Lumia 640 family is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC; all smartphones are equipped with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of flash memory. The display type is the same for all models (the diagonal is different), but the main cameras of the 640 and 640 XL are different: 8 MP and 13 MP matrices, f/2.2 and f/2.0 optics, respectively. The front cameras are also different: a wide-angle Full HD 5 MP camera for the Lumia 640 XL and a 0.9 MP HD camera for the Lumia 640. Naturally, the larger 640 XL has a more powerful battery: 3000 mAh versus 2500 mAh. And one more difference: models with LTE support are also equipped NFC module.

The hero of this review is the Lumia 640 DS 3G smartphone.

Equipment

The smartphone comes in traditional packaging for the current generation of Lumia devices. The design is assembled from two boxes, the inner part is placed in the outer cover. There is little information about the smartphone's parameters on the packaging; all of it is presented in the form of a few icons. Some details about the characteristics specific model smartphone can be identified from the text and abbreviations on the sticker attached to the package.

The mobile computer that visited the editorial office came with only a charger and documentation. Judging by information from the Microsoft website, Lumia 640 buyers will receive just such a modest set of accessories.

Appearance and ease of use

There are several standard appearance options for Lumia smartphones. The first group includes strict rectangular (in plan) devices with chopped sharp edges. Devices of the second group are also distinguished by edges that intersect strictly at an angle of 90 degrees, but their body is made of plastic rather than metal. Finally, the third broad group includes models with rounded, smoothed body contours and smoothly merging edges. Most representatives of the third category are also made of plastic. Obviously, cutting and turning metal at right angles is still easier than giving it a round or curved shape.

The current hero of this review belongs to the third category of Lumia smartphones. The smooth contours of the body and colored plastic give the Lumia 640 a somewhat frivolous look, but this is a long-standing trend among Nokia/Microsoft designers. They love fun and cheerful colors in their devices, and we can only praise them for that. For lovers of a strict style, there is a black and white back panel.

At first glance, the Lumia 640 makes a good impression, but the devil, as we know, is in the details. And the longer you work with your smartphone, the more, unfortunately, you discover such disappointing moments.

The main, main, almost ultimate design flaw of the Lumia 640 is its extremely slippery plastic. Perhaps the current hero of the review is the most “unstoppable”, in the bad sense of the word, smartphone that I have ever had in my hands. The varnished back panel and side edges of the Lumia 640 turn the smartphone into a piece of soap. Nothing helps - neither the sufficiently large width of the edges, nor the significant surface area of the rear panel; The smartphone still tries to slip out of your hands every now and then. Using the device in transport, much less doing anything there with one hand, is out of the question: one extra push and the Lumia 640 will go from the palm of your hand towards the center of the Earth. It’s easy to understand what made Microsoft’s designers choose such a material for the body of the review hero, but what allowed the engineers to agree with them is difficult. Most Lumiyas use much less slippery soft-touch plastic, which feels like rubber to the touch. However, judging by the appearance of the recently announced Lumia 435, slippery plastic is a long-term trend in the work of Microsoft developers. It is sad. Well, to finally close the topic of the plastic back panel of the Lumia 640, I’ll note that, as befits a lacquered surface, it perfectly collects fingerprints, traces of touches and scratches.

Considering the above, there would be no need to dwell in detail on how the smartphone fits in the palm of your hand. But if we ignore the varnished plastic or imagine that the owner of a mobile computer has extremely rough skin or the surface of the smartphone is covered with a layer of dirt, then the following should be noted: in terms of dimensions, the Lumia 640 fits perfectly into a medium-sized palm. You have to hold the smartphone tightly, and your fingers have something to grab onto - the wide side edges help. When working with a smartphone, the power control button is located just under the thumb of the right hand. The relatively light weight of the mobile computer does not cause discomfort or fatigue.

It is difficult to operate the Lumia 640 with one hand, but if you really want to, it is possible. The main obstacle to this is not the large display, but, as already mentioned, the slippery plastic. A mobile computer fits in a trouser or shirt pocket without any problems.

There are no complaints about the quality of materials and workmanship of the Lumia 640. The plastic does not look cheap, does not crunch or squeak, the back panel of the smartphone does not flex, there are no gaps in parts and extraneous sounds absent when shaking.

Let's move on to the next unpleasant feature of the Lumia 640's appearance and design - the wide gap for the telephone speaker. When the smartphone arrived at the editorial office, a certain amount of dust had already accumulated in this deep container. Over time, there will be even more of it there if you do not pay due attention to cleaning it. But the speaker hole isn't the only dust and dirt collector on the Lumia 640's bezel.

A hole of the same depth, but much smaller in size, is provided for the microphone, which is located at the bottom of the screen. It will be really difficult to clean anything out of it. This “in-depth” list ends with the gap between the protective glass of the display and its plastic rim.

The entire front panel of the Lumia 640 is made of Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Below it there is a display, front camera lens, light and proximity sensors. The Lumia 640 does not have dedicated touch buttons for system control; they are replaced by virtual analogues.

The back panel of the smartphone covers its entire body, “overlapping” all the side edges. This design of a mobile computer is also called a “boat”. The design is strong, but it can be very inconvenient if you need to gain access to the battery compartment. Lumia 640 is one such case. In order to more or less quickly disconnect back panel, you have to put quite a lot of pressure on the main camera lens, holding the smartphone by the upper edge of the body. There are no fingernail recesses or other aids provided. We just press on the lens, the body is squeezed out, a millimeter of plastic appears, we catch it with a fingernail and separate the two parts further. It is clear that this is far from the most reliable solution, and only the rarity of the operation itself to replace the battery, SIM card or memory card during normal use of the smartphone helps to alleviate the fate of the camera glass.

The back panel of the Lumia 640 is installed back without any problems. Replacing the memory card and SIM cards is only possible when the battery. If one of the Micro-SIM cards gets stuck, it can be pushed with a fingernail or other handy means through a special hole in the case. Judging by the fact that in almost every new smartphone, recesses and holes for pushing SIM cards have begun to appear, their jamming in the connectors is quite common.

There are holes on the back of the smartphone for the camera lens, LED flash, main speaker and connectors. There are repeaters for the keys. On the inside of the cover there are three rubber dampers and a black sticker in place of the NFC antenna, which this Lumia 640 model does not have.

Plastic keys located on the right side of the Lumia 640 case control the volume and power of the mobile computer. It’s strange, but Microsoft engineers did not provide a traditional button for controlling the camera in the Lumia 640. The shape of the keys is flat, the dimensions are sufficient for comfortable control of the smartphone blindly. Additional convenience is provided by the large key travel and a distinct click when pressed.

The left side of the Lumia 640 case is left empty. At the top end of the smartphone there is a hole for headphones. At the bottom there is a single Micro-USB-compatible connector for the sync and charging cable.

So, the appearance and design of the Lumia 640 left mixed impressions. Despite the general traditional design and execution, the current hero of the review has many minor and one major flaw in terms of the exterior. Let's be honest: using a smartphone is inconvenient and very slippery. The Lumia 640 should be immediately hidden in a case or the back panel should be replaced, for example, with a cover with a front curtain and a card holder.

Screen

The Lumia 640 screen parameters are as follows: IPS matrix, resolution 1280×720 pixels (HD), 5″ diagonal, pixel density - 293 dpi. The picture on the screen of the review hero is clear and colorful, individual pixels are invisible.

Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protects the smartphone display from damage. The backlight brightness is adjusted manually and automatically.

The Lumia 640's capacitive sensor confidently detects up to four simultaneous signals. If there are five or more signals, it begins to confuse them, the signals begin to disappear, and the behavior of the sensor becomes inadequate.

A detailed examination using measuring instruments was carried out by the editor of the “Monitors” and “Projectors and TV” sections Alexey Kudryavtsev.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is scratch-resistant. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photograph in which a white surface is reflected when the screens are turned off (on the left is Nexus 7, on the right is Microsoft Lumia 640, then they can be distinguished by size):

The screen of the Microsoft Lumia 640 is slightly darker (brightness according to photographs is 97 versus 111 for the Nexus 7). The tripling of reflected objects in the Microsoft Lumia 640 screen is very weak, this indicates that there is no air gap between the outer glass (also known as the touch sensor) and the surface of the matrix (OGS - One Glass Solution type screen). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better under strong external illumination, but their repair in the case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be replaced. The outer surface of the screen has a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, better than that of the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much more easily and appear at a lower speed than with regular glass.

When the white field was displayed in full screen and with manual brightness control, its maximum value was 385 cd/m², the minimum was 3.4 cd/m². The maximum value is quite high, and, given the excellent anti-glare properties, in bright daylight The image on the screen should be clearly visible. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. Adjusting the brightness is quite complicated. Firstly, on a separate page the user can select one of three profiles with fixed brightness levels and enable a mode with automatic brightness adjustment based on the level of ambient light (the sensor is located to the right of the front camera eye).

Secondly, on another separate page (closer to the end of the list of applications and settings), you can go to the next level page and there for manual mode adjust brightness levels for the three profiles specified.

And for the automatic mode, the degree of sensitivity is adjusted on this page:

Next, for the automatic mode (in which, when external lighting conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases) for three conditions, we present the screen brightness values for three positions of the sensitivity slider (at minimum, default and maximum). In complete darkness in automatic mode brightness is reduced to 3.2, 12 and 25 cd/m², respectively (the first value is too low, the other two provide acceptable comfort for reading the screen in complete darkness); in an artificially lit office (approximately 400 lux) the brightness is set to 80, 250 and 385 cd/m² (the first two values can be considered suitable), in a brightly lit environment (corresponding to lighting on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20000 lux or a little more) - increases to 385 cd/m² in any case (the maximum that is expected). Eventually this function works more or less adequately and allows the user to make adjustments to its operation. Note that there is an option in the settings, turning it on supposedly improves readability in bright light. It is not clear what this setting actually changes, since when it is activated, the brightness of the backlight does not change, and nothing visually changes on the screen either - even in bright external light, even in the dark. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flickering.

IN this smartphone An IPS type matrix is used. The microphotographs show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even with large viewing deviations from perpendicular to the screen and without inverting shades. For comparison, here are photographs in which the same images are displayed on the screens of the Nexus 7 and Microsoft Lumia 640, while the screen brightness is initially set to approximately 200 cd/m² (across the white field in full screen), and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K .Perpendicular to the plane of the screens is a white field:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field. And a test picture:

Color rendition is good and the colors are saturated on both screens; the color balance differs insignificantly. Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors have not changed much on both screens, but on the Microsoft Lumia 640 the contrast has decreased to a greater extent due to the strong brightening of blacks. And a white field:

The brightness at an angle for both screens has noticeably decreased (at least 5 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of the Microsoft Lumia 640 the drop in brightness is slightly greater (brightness according to photographs is 227 versus 230 for the Nexus 7). When deviated diagonally, the black field brightens greatly and acquires a yellowish tint or remains approximately neutral gray. The photographs below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is the same for the screens!):

And from another angle:

When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field is good:

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is normal - about 750:1. The black-white-black response time is 23 ms (13 ms on + 10 ms off). The transition between halftones of gray 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes a total of 37 ms. Constructed using 32 points with equal intervals based on the numerical value of the shade of gray, the gamma curve did not reveal a blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows, and the index of the approximating power function turned out to be 2.14, which is close to the standard value of 2.2, while the real gamma the curve deviates little from the power law:

Color gamut is close to sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components with each other:

As a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is not much higher than the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, color temperature and ΔE change little from hue to hue - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

By going to the second (far) page with screen settings and selecting the next nesting level - page Color profile — the user can select one of the preset profiles or a profile in which color rendering can be adjusted using color temperature, hue and saturation sliders.

The last slider slightly changes the color gamut. Pregnant Bright we get:

Pregnant Natural we get:

Profile cold- increased color temperature. Profile standard characterized above visually and by measurements. Profile bright- increased color saturation. Let's go to the profile additionally. Note that precise adjustment using the calibrator is significantly complicated by the lack of a numerical indication of the current values and the ability to select your own image for display at the top of the screen or at least just a large section of white field on this page. The numerical result of the correction performed is shown in the graphs above with the caption Corr. There are some improvements, but not fundamental. You can choose the default profile standard.

Let's summarize. The screen has a fairly high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without any problems, even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. It is also possible to use a mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, the absence of flicker and air gaps in the layers of the screen, as well as the sRGB color gamut and good color balance. Significant disadvantages include the low stability of black to gaze deviation from perpendicular to the screen plane. However, overall the screen quality is high.

Sound

The Microsoft Lumia 640 smartphone is equipped with two speakers and one microphone. The telephone speaker, which is located at the top of the front panel of the mobile computer, has high volume and good sound quality. Even with strong external noise, the voice of the interlocutor will be clearly distinguishable.

The main speaker of the Lumia 640 is located at the bottom of the rear panel of the smartphone. Its volume is also high, but the sound quality is average. At maximum power and with abundance low frequencies he begins to noticeably wheeze.

For the main speaker there is only one hole in the back cover of the smartphone, and even of a small diameter. As a result, the speaker is very easy to muffle if you cover this hole with something. The volume of sound becomes almost zero, only vibrations will continue to pass through the body of the smartphone.

The Lumia 640 did not come with a standard headset, so the quality of the smartphone's headphone output was tested in conjunction with wired headphones Sony MDR-XB30ER. Subjectively, the sound quality was excellent. Even at the maximum comfortable volume there was no distortion. It was not possible to reach the maximum possible level of sound power - it became scary for my hearing. Thus, with good headphones The Lumia 640 is quite suitable for listening to music in any conditions.

The sound volume in the smartphone can be changed both programmatically and using two keys on the left side of the device body. To play music, the standard Xbox Music audio player and the MixRadio program, a streaming radio service client with the ability to paid subscription for unlimited listening to audio tracks.

The headphones connected to the Lumia 640 act as an antenna for the FM radio receiver built into the smartphone. It doesn't work without headphones. The program for controlling the receiver has a standard appearance. It can automatically search for stations; the stations you like can be collected in a list or placed on the desktop in the form of tiles. RDS technology and audio output to the main speaker of the smartphone are supported.

Camera

As already noted, the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL smartphones are equipped with different cameras. In tested mobile computer models with 8 megapixel and 0.9 megapixel sensors were installed for the main and additional cameras, respectively. The physical size of the main camera sensor is 1/4 inch. The aperture number of the camera's optical system is f/2.2, the focal length is 28 mm. The camera is equipped with an autofocus system. An LED flash can be used for shooting in low light conditions. Video recording is carried out with a resolution of 1080p.

F-number of the optical system additional camera equals f/2.4. There is no automatic focusing system. Video recording is carried out with a resolution of 720p.

It's a shame that the Lumia 640 doesn't have a traditional camera control button. Perhaps the manufacturer is making it clear that for photo experiments it is better to look at another smartphone model.

Filming is controlled by the Lumia Camera app. There are no serious delays when activating the camera; starting the application takes just over a second.

In addition to the Lumia Camera app Lumia memory 640 has several more photography-related programs: Lumia Stories, Lumia Moments, Lumia Live Photos, Lumia Selfies and Lumia Photo Studio.

The shooting quality of the front camera is quite consistent with 1 megapixel.

Good sharpness across the field and plans. It’s nice that the trees practically do not merge.

The branches and even the grass were well done. The sharpness in distant shots is good.

The camera copes quite well in low light conditions.

Good sharpness across the field and plans. Not all 13-megapixel cameras are able to capture grass in the same way, even in the foreground.

The camera copes with macro photography.

The text is well done.

Perhaps, the camera has no obvious shortcomings, other than the low resolution of the matrix. But it makes full use of its 8 megapixels. However, we have already seen all this in previous non-top smartphones of the Lumia line: a good module and enough clean work programs. Even though the module is different here, best qualities he inherited his predecessors. And this is not surprising: why try to change something that has already been done well. The camera successfully combines good optics, a decent sensor and a reasonable, moderate program. And more precise words than “just good camera“, it’s difficult to find a description for her. It is quite suitable for artistic and documentary photography.

Software

The Microsoft Lumia 640 smartphone runs under operating Microsoft systems Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 with Lumia Denim Pack. In the future, all devices in this series should receive a firmware update based on the upcoming Windows 10 OS.

Traditionally for Microsoft/Nokia devices, the Lumia 640 comes pre-installed with a large amount of additional software. The list includes Microsoft applications: Office, OneNote, OneDrive, Skype. Along with the smartphone, the user receives 15 GB of cloud space OneDrive storage to store any data and another 15 GB for photo backup. Also, when purchasing a smartphone, a free subscription to Office 365 services is provided for a year.

On-site navigation and mapping services: Here Drive+ and Here Maps. But for some reason the Here Transit application was not in the memory of the review hero, but it can be easily installed from the Microsoft application store.

For those who like to photograph themselves, others and the surrounding reality, the smartphone developers have provided as many as five different applications.

The Lumia 640 is not spared domestic specifics: instead of the Cortana assistant, when you press a special button, Yandex search is called up, in addition to the Facebook client, the smartphone’s memory contains the VKontakte social network application, reading lovers can use the client of the virtual bookstore liters: Read!

Telephone and communications

All variants of Lumia 640 smartphones are capable of operating in 2G and 3G networks. The following frequencies are supported for GSM networks: 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz. For WCDMA networks: 850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz. The maximum data download speed on the 3G network is 42.2 Mbit/s.

Smartphones supporting LTE networks additionally work with the WCDMA 1700 MHz band. LTE support includes the following frequency bands: LTE FDD B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B7, B8, B12, B17, B28, TD-LTE B38, B40. In LTE Cat 4 networks, the maximum data download speed is 150 Mbit/s.

Smartphones that have two slots for SIM cards operate according to the Dual Standby scheme: in standby mode, both communication channels are active, in phone call mode the second channel is turned off, and the smartphone is “out of reach”. Only one SIM card can work in fast 3G/4G networks, the second channel is always connected to the 2G network. You can switch between two channels for data, messages and phone calls without turning off the power to your smartphone.

Tests of the Lumia 640 sample tested showed reliable operation of the cellular communication module. The 3G network has been defined both in Moscow and in the Moscow region. The data transfer rate in the WCDMA network turned out to be significantly lower than the stated maximum theoretical, but for busy cellular networks metropolitan area is normal.

The Bluetooth 4.0 module in the Lumia 640 has a large number of operating profiles. Two of them were tested in conjunction with the Sony MW1 wireless stereo headset: A2DP and HSP. Support came from top level: playing music with broadcasting track names, answering phone calls with transmitting not only the phone number, but also the name of the interlocutor from the contact list of the mobile computer.

In conditions home network Wi-Fi with TP-Link router TL-WR1043ND as an access point, the smartphone demonstrated a data exchange speed of 40 Mbit/s.

Lumia 640 models with support for LTE networks are also equipped with an NFC module. A smartphone that visited the editorial office and supported only 3G networks was deprived of it.

But all variants of Lumia 640 interact with the systems in the same way satellite navigation. The smartphone receiver receives a signal from GPS satellites, Glonass and BeiDou. A-GPS technology helps to find satellite signals and determine the approximate location of the smartphone based on data from base stations cellular communications and Wi-Fi networks.

Performance

The basis for the entire family of Lumia 640 smartphones was the well-known Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 platform, used in countless devices. There is no exact data on what specific modification of the chip is installed here - most likely it is MSM8926. The platform includes four computing cores ARM Cortex-A7, the maximum operating frequency of which is 1.2 GHz, and GPU Adreno 305. The chip is manufactured using a 28 nm process technology.

All versions of the Lumia 640 have 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of flash memory. Of these, 3.3 GB is occupied by the operating system and pre-installed applications. Additional space for music, photos and videos can be obtained using the card microSD memory, cards with capacities up to 128 GB are supported. Support external USB drives Lumia 640 does not.

Introduced almost two years ago, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC was originally intended for the mid-range smartphone segment. In the time since the premiere, its performance and capabilities have been well studied; there is no need to expect any revelations here. Unfortunately, in all respects it is inferior to modern SoCs, even at the budget level, but, as the example of the Lumia 640 shows, its capabilities are sufficient for new devices even in 2015. In fact, most of the current line of Nokia/Microsoft Lumia devices use this platform in various variations.

Let's see what ratings the hero of this review received in performance tests.

There is nothing new in the test results; we still have the same well-known platform in front of us.

The GFXBench graphics benchmark results table shows two values for each test. This is due to the fact that in onscreen mode the application generates an image with a resolution of 720p, and in offscreen mode - 1080p.
