How to choose a smart watch so that it successfully performs the functions you need and meets the "price-quality" criterion? Reliability, appearance, convenience and ease of use, battery life are the main factors for a successful purchase.

What is a smart watch for?

Inexpensive Options Chinese manufacturers, fashionable and expensive Apple Watch, status Withings Activite, popular watches for android Samsung Gear The Sony Smartwatch provides a huge amount of choice for potential buyers. What features of a smart brain watch will you need, and what should you consider when buying? If you are a fan of wearing bracelets or other devices like fitness trackers, you have to use GPS system or you love newfangled trendy devices - smart watches will be an excellent solution to a lot of problems.

The significant size of the smartphone is not always convenient for constant use. Smartwatches will become an occasion to get a mobile phone out of a purse or pocket less often, notifying the owner of incoming messages, bank mailings. Combined functionality of an alarm clock, a personal "fitness trainer" (due to the functions of a pedometer), remote device, organizer - good reasons why you need a smart watch modern man.

What is a smart watch

Smart watches with a phone function, the ability to call or communicate on social networks are currently in the development plans of leading gadget manufacturers. Manage your music, receive notifications, unlock your phone, make voice messages or notes, and finally check the time with this smart mini device. As a kind of smartphone interface, smart watches allow you to save time by simplifying access to popular functions. mobile phones.

Most variations on the theme of smart watches have a variety of characteristics, united by a common indicator: the ability to minimize the use of the phone when receiving messages, notifications and save phone battery power.

Smart watch features

Depending on the needs of individual groups of potential users, smartwatches are presented in several categories:

  • for business people;
  • for buyers who are actively involved in sports, who monitor their own health;
  • for fashionable, stylish young people and girls who prefer life "in trend".

The main characteristics that play an important role in choosing a particular model include appearance, versatility, quality, reliability of materials, protection against dust, water and external influences, battery life for smart watches without recharging. Usability third party programs- from readers (should someone be lucky in the exam) to barometers and navigators - affects the cost, the ability of the gadget's battery to "hold" a charge.

Most smart watch manufacturers use Android platforms or Android Wear. The recently launched AppleWatch with iOS system, as well as devices with custom software and platform developed for them, such as PebbleSteel, stand out. A significant plus of the latter is the need to recharge the battery no more than once every 5-6 days.

Functionality

Most of the models of smart devices on the modern market are "tied" to a smartphone, without which work will be limited by the capabilities of a fitness tracker and ordinary watches with an electronic display. Features Samsung Gear S, LG Watch Urbane LTE are more extensive: they have a built-in communication module, and a connection with a phone is not required for them. Communication with a smartphone in smart watches is provided via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi at access points.

Functions of smart watches:

  • music management;
  • ability to download tracks Google Play;
  • listening to downloaded music using a headset;
  • counting steps taken (kilometers) and calories burned;
  • measurement of pulse, pressure;
  • alarm clock with the ability to control the light and deep phase of sleep, provided that you are on your arm at night;
  • the ability to accept a call or refuse;
  • voice response to a message.

When deciding which smartwatch to choose, consider the model and operating system of your smartphone. With an Android base, you can buy any device on the market with Android Wear or pure Android. Stylish and fashion phones with a "bitten apple" are combined only with expensive and no less stylish Apple Watch. Among the "generalists" are only Pebble, which successfully work with both iOS, Android, and Windows phone.

Design

Familiar when choosing wrist watch color characteristics, appearance, until recently, played an insignificant role for fans of smart mini-gadgets. A sporty or semi-sporty style, a simple display, a minimum of exquisite “bells and whistles” distinguish the models of the mass sector:

Classic round case, the use of familiar metal, leather and glass for LG G Watch Urban models, Motorola Moto 360, Samsung Gear S2, stylish design attract the attention of potential buyers, despite the relatively high price. As representatives of the premium segment, it is worth highlighting the Apple Watch Edition in 18-carat gold “packaging” or the strict, elegant Withings Activite with a round case and laconic design.

Among the representatives of beautiful smartwatches with a “sporty character”, Adidasmi Coach Smart Run should be noted, which will help you create a personal training plan, prompt and “show” in the form of short clips how to properly perform exercises of various types of load: strength, cardio, aerobic. In addition, they will carefully monitor the state of your body and its reaction to sports as a tonometer, tracker, heart rate monitor.

Protection against moisture and dust

An important parameter considering high cost smart watch. Sapphire glass (Sony Smartwatch 3) helps to avoid scratches and damage to the display screen in some models, which affects the price increase, but increases the life of the gadget. You can find out the degree of protection against water, dust of a smart watch by the code indicated in the technical specification: IPxx, where the first x means the level of anti-dust protection, and the second indicates moisture resistance.

With a dust protection rating of 6, your smart watch will be protected from the smallest dust particles, and you can travel with it in the Sahara during dust storms. Do not remove the smart device while taking a shower, perhaps if the last digit in the protective characteristic is 5 or 6, and for swimming, choose models with a seven or eight. Most smartwatch models from leading manufacturers are IP67 or IP68 rated.

Display characteristics

The body of the device is presented in the form of a rectangle or a classic circle, but the color and characteristics of the "wrist" mini-monitor have features:

1. Screen color.

  • Monochrome. Such models of smart watches are controlled using external hardware buttons.
  • Color. The disadvantages include the loss of clarity and brightness of the image in bright sunlight.

2. The presence of sensors.

  • Touchscreen. It is easy to use, however, if the glass is damaged, there may be problems with the sensitivity of the sensors.
  • Button screen. Control smart watch carried out through external mechanical buttons, which complicates access to information or increases the response time to incoming messages. More practical and durable.

Strap

Sports models are equipped with a rubber strap. In their production, hypoallergenic rubber is used, which does not cause stains and irritations. Some models for everyday use come with an interchangeable set of straps made of leather or rubber in different colors. Smart watch manufacturers produce products with a metal bracelet (Huawei Watch Classic stainless steel, SONY smart watch 2) or plastic strap (Pebble, Casio).

Battery

The more functionality a smartwatch model has, the more problematic battery life is. Base models with limited service have a battery with a lifespan of about 2 years, after which it will need to be replaced. The leader is Pebble with an e-ink screen, in which the watch battery needs to be recharged every 5 days. Multifunctional ASUS Zen Watch, SONY Smart Watch, etc. models will be able to work in active mode from 25 to 3 hours due to the small size of the body and not very energy-intensive battery.

When deciding which smartwatch to choose, pay attention to the charging port. In some models, it is universal (microUSB standard), while Samsung Gear, ASUS Zen Watch, Apple Watch require a special adapter. Motorola Moto 360 comes with base charging station, thanks to which this beautiful and stylish wrist smart watch turns into an equally stylish desktop alarm clock.

Where to buy smart watch

The booming smartwatch market brings out up to 5 new models every quarter (thanks to our Chinese friends). Do not get confused when choosing the available assortment, you can purchase a quality item in the price range that interests you:

  1. By visiting specialized stores of "smart goods" off-line. The advantages of such a purchase include: the ability to feel, see in reality and test the model you like, get expert advice. The disadvantages include: the price includes not only the cost of the watch model (and it is quite high), but also the overhead costs of the store in the form of rent, salaries of employees and covering current expenses.
  2. Buy smart watches on the Internet from representatives of trading companies or from a catalog in online stores of official manufacturers. The price of such products will be lower than in real stores, but there is a possibility of running into an unscrupulous seller or low-quality goods.

Manufacturers

  • Samsung
  • Apple
  • Alcatel
  • Casio
  • Motorola
  • Pebble
  • Polar

Among the countries producing smartwatches are Germany, Denmark, China, USA, Finland, Sweden, South Korea, Japan, Italy. Russian companies can also boast of their own variants of smart gadgets. The development of the Explay company is represented by the Explay N1 Watch model (cost 3000 rubles), which is distinguished by the following characteristics:

  • the ability to call from the watch;
  • write and send text messages;
  • listen to music tracks.

Price

When choosing a smart watch model, the decisive factor is the price characteristic. Brand models Samsung, Asus, Sony, Adidas start from 200 euros. The cost of mass-sector models from Chinese manufacturers ranges from $90 to $150 for a single copy. The sports version of the Apple Watch went on sale for $394, while the gold-plated luxury model of the same company, the Apple Watch Edition, costs $10-17,000.

When deciding to buy a smart watch, evaluate the “quality-functionality-price” ratio so as not to buy an expensive knick-knack and a cheap fake that will go “on the shelf” due to uselessness or poor quality work.

Models of children's watches Smart baby watch with gps

Q50 - the most compact

The Q50 model is suitable for children from 5 to 10 years old. This watch has a small case with built-in 4 buttons, looks very neat on the hand and is firmly attached to the strap, the child does not have access to the SIM card and the battery in the watch.

The watch is presented in five colors: hot pink, blue, light green, black and dark blue. When choosing the color of the watch, even the most serious and demanding parent freezes for a moment.

Q60S with color screen

The second watch model Q60S is a hit of spring 2016, a watch with a color screen!!! They have a large body (4.8 cm * 4.3 cm * 1.1 cm). They are presented in three colors: pink, blue and yellow-orange. Suitable for junior and senior students.

Q80 with color touch screen

The third watch model Q80 - with touch screen. Bright, colorful, neat, easy to manage, fun children's graphics, all settings through the application on the parent's phone. Show more accurately the coordinates of the child when he is indoors than previous watch models.

What can a Smart baby watch with gps do?

From the watch, the child can easily call the 10 numbers you entered or receive calls from these numbers. A child in a difficult situation will be able to press the SOS alarm button (with dialing to three parents' numbers). And a couple more fun: you can receive encouraging hearts, call from the clock to the same clock and track the steps taken during the day, send sound SMS to parents.

And now the most interesting (this is secret information, it is better for children not to reveal all the cards). So, what can you (the cunning and all-seeing parent) be able to do or learn with the help of a watch on a child’s hand ???

The possibility of invisible control over the child is the strength of a truly smart parent.

You will be able to "listen to the child" in real time, the child will not know about it in any way, the clock will not show any kind. You can also call your child and send text and audio messages. On the map in the Se Tracker application, you will be presented with the historical route of the child for an hour, for a whole day, for a week, for a month. And if you come in, you can see the location of the child in this moment. Have you dreamed about this?

From the reviews:

My story: it was this watch that gave me the opportunity to send my eight-year-old daughter alone on a plane to visit her grandparents. And although the flight was not long, only 1 hour, parental anxiety did not leave me. And then an insight came: after all, during the whole flight I would know what was happening with the child: the watch with the beacon would be on my daughter’s hand, the child was reflected during the flight on the Google map, and in the end, I could “eavesdrop” if my the child screams wildly in the plane and calls the mother who has risked this adventure.

Everything went great. The daughter flew with the breeze and was handed over by the flight attendants to the good hands of her grandparents. And an eight-year-old girl knew no bounds for pride and happiness from an independent flight ...

  6. Emergency SOS button (automatic sequential dialing to three numbers in turn)
  7. Geo-fence (setting borders on the map)
  8. History of movements of the child
  9. Biometric indicators (pedometer, child's route in meters, number of active movements)
  10. Alarm
  11. Messages about low battery, going beyond the geofence, pressing the SOS button, about removing the watch from the hand. (Last function not available for Q60S)
  12. Search for watches in case they are lost indoors.

From the reviews:

“My daughter has families with three or more children in her class. In one family, a fourth-grader girl often passes her stop on the bus, and when she gets off at the next stops, she is forced to explain to her parents by phone where she is. It takes a lot of time to find out, because the child cannot always see the name of the streets and navigate the area and describe it. And in general, this is stress for the child ... Then the parents break off from work and go to that place to pick up the girl. With a smart watch, such moments would be resolved faster, because on the map you can see the location of the child and explain which bus to take and where to go.”

How does Smart Watch GPS work?

  • It is necessary to insert a Mini SIM card of Beeline, Megafon with minimal GPRS Internet access into the watch, with the ability to receive SMS messages and with a positive balance
  • All watch management is done remotely via free app in Russian
  • The application must be installed on your phone and / or tablet (iOS or Android)
  • It is necessary to register in the application and enter the necessary information in the settings
  • If you have two or more children running in different directions, then you can easily track them all in the Se Tracker app. After registering the first watch, it is enough to enter the “profile” and “add a new device”

How to charge the Smart Baby Watch ?

The watch has a battery, it is located behind the metal panel of the watch.
To charge the watch, you need to insert a high-quality cord for recharging phones into the side connector in the watch.
It is possible to charge the watch with the included laptop charging cord, but sometimes the watch may be detected as a device and not charge or take longer to charge.
If the update option is set to “once a minute” in the application settings, then the battery lasts for approximately 2 days. If - once every 10 minutes or once an hour, then the charge will last from 2 to 3 days.
The myth that the battery in the watch lasts up to 5 or 7 days is all the machinations of marketers. Don't believe!

Of course, not everyone will immediately appreciate all the charm of a children's watch, which the parent will intensely wear to him in order to know everything about his child. It was in order to make the gadget interesting that the manufacturer installed the "Be friends" function.

Thanks to this function, two children with watches can exchange with each other voice messages and play secret agents.

All the delights of "smart" children's watches cannot be conveyed, as the manufacturer often updates the application, after which new functions appear. One thing remains unchanged: the delight of children from the opportunity to be a “spy”, who, through a smart device, can call and send secret messages to their parents.

And in this sense, "smart" watches ColMi GT08 made a significant step forward, since their owner for a small price gets almost the full range of functions that are supported by wearable electronics in latest versions. Besides, the device provides a wide range of compatibility with other electronics. Moreover, the creators have implemented a fairly effective configuration for this, which allows you to combine Android and Bluetooth technologies. • Sensors: Light, Accelerometer, Compass, Gyroscope, GPS.
  • Oleophobic coating.
  • Remote control of music playback.

Minuses:

  • No calorie monitoring.
  • Step counting is a big lie.
  • After a call from the clock (they call via smart), the clock starts to discharge very much 5% per hour. Only restarting the clock helps. And this must be done after each dialing from the clock.
  • At the end of the 1 year warranty, there is no way to repair them. Warranty exchange only! Or an exchange with a surcharge of about 80% for new ones.

conclusions

Let's briefly dwell on such features of the selected models of smart watches:

  • With the help of the Smart Baby Watch Q50, you can set the radius of the permitted zone in which your child can be.
  • Smart watch ColMi GT08 provide the ability to receive and send messages and calls and also work with email and address book.
  • Huawei Watch model is reliably protected from moisture, so it can be used when visiting the pool and swimming in the river and the sea.
  • Built in Sony device SmartWatch 3 SWR50 battery can work for several days without the need for recharging.

One of the most sought-after products in electronics stores in recent years is a smart watch phone. Wearable gadget with which you not only exact time learn, but also do not miss important app alerts or a call, you can track the number of steps taken, and the functions of more expensive solutions can amaze the imagination.

For example, many models are presented with support for SIM-cards, which allows you to make calls directly from the watch - a rather interesting and useful feature. Other solutions have received GPS, which tracks the location of the watch owner and shows the route traveled. If you are also interested in a phone watch, then read on, we will tell you about several popular models in an affordable price category.

This is one of the most affordable watches on the market that boasts a calling function borrowed from phones. Due to their low cost and not the worst performance, they have become very popular among users who want a smart watch, but are not eager to pay a serious amount for the offers of A-brands. The design of Aplus GV18 is copied from Samsung's Gear S 3, the Chinese origin is immediately visible - camera, speaker, SIM support and memory cards, a bunch of functions, most of which are unclear for what.

From characteristics this watch-phone can be distinguished:

  • a case made of not the worst metal, complemented by a silicone strap;
  • a 1.54-inch touch screen surrounded by a decently wide black border (when the display is active, everything does not look as attractive as we would like);
  • processor from MTK - 6260A;
  • 64 MB random access memory, 128 MB permanent, expandable with memory cards;
  • even a 0.3 megapixel camera;
  • Bluetooth 3.0 for connecting the watch to the phone, and also, which is surprising considering the cost;
  • 450 mAh battery;
  • pedometer, sleep and calorie monitoring, other functions inherent in this class of devices.

To be proudly called a watch-phone, Aplus GV18 has got support for SIM-cards and, as a result, the function of making calls. The card is inserted into a special tray, calls are made in the same way as from a smartphone: we drive in a number or select it from the phone book and talk. But without a Bluetooth headset, it looks strange, and not very convenient.

In addition to calls, the Chinese watch-phone can take photos and record videos - the quality leaves much to be desired, but still. Naturally, they show notifications from a smartphone, which for many is the main function of a smart watch, replacing all others. A little and fitness features Aplus GV18 received: a pedometer, sleep monitoring, calorie counting, a reminder of prolonged immobility and some others.

Aplus GV18, despite the disadvantages, which, of course, are (not best screen, trouble with applications, autonomy that leaves much to be desired), will appeal to many users. For 1000-1500 rubles, which sellers on AliExpress and GearBest demand for them, this is an excellent watch with phone functions that will become good option for the first acquaintance with this kind of devices.

Smart Watch Celiadwn I 9

Another representative of the affordable category in high-quality performance. As in the previous case, one of the "chips" was the support of SIM-cards. The manufacturer has managed to make the Celiadwn I9 neat with a rather attractive design. Used high-quality materials of the case and strap. Watch-phone will look great on both men's and women's hands, and the abundance of multi-colored straps pleases.

  • metal case with corrugated silicone strap;
  • good touch 1.54-inch screen with a resolution of 240x240 pixels;
  • energy efficient processor MTK2502;
  • 64 MB RAM and 128 MB permanent memory expandable with TF-cards (maximum - 16 GB);
  • 0.3 MP camera located on the right side;
  • Bluetooth 4.0 for pairing with Android devices and iOS;
  • 250 mAh battery, from which you should not expect miracles;
  • standard set of functions: pedometer, sleep monitoring, reminders and so on.

The watch-phone supports the installation of one SIM-card of micro format, which will operate at GSM850/900/1800/1900 MHz frequencies. Dialing is standard, available phone book, which will be synchronized with your smartphone contacts. Connecting to other devices is done via the Bluetooth interface. For full-fledged work, you will have to install an application with which you can track various indicators.

From other functions, there is practically nothing to highlight. There is a fairly accurate pedometer, sleep monitoring, as well as support for notifications from smartphone applications. The watch was not left without the possibility of remote control of some functions of the phone, for example, a camera or a music player.

Celiadwn I9 may not be the best in its class, but they deserve attention. You can buy a watch phone from one of the sellers on AliExpress, where their cost is about 4,000 rubles.

KingWear KW88

A watch-phone from a more expensive price segment, which has more interesting characteristics and a prettier design. , both look and feel expensive, have received a full version of Android 5.1, which makes them more of a wrist smartphone than a watch. They support 3G networks, which allows you to surf the Internet and watch videos online, but it's not very convenient to do this on 1.39 inches.

  • good metal, which does not lose its attractiveness even after a year of use, and high-quality rubber straps;
  • not some, 1.39-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 400x400 pixels and OGS technology;
  • 4-core chip MTK6580, which is still installed in many budget smartphones;
  • as much as 512 MB of RAM;
  • 4 GB drive;
  • 2 megapixel camera;
  • Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi - interfaces for all occasions;
  • a 400 mAh battery, which, given such a system, will definitely not be enough for a long time;
  • pedometer, heart rate sensor and other useful features.

KingWear KW88 is truly a watch-phone that will easily become full replacement smartphone. It is clear that it is not so convenient to watch movies or use a browser on them, but you can call and write SMS. Android 5.1 lets you install thousands of apps and even games. Productive "hardware" provides high speed, and the memory is enough for several hundred songs. In addition, there is GPS support, which allows you to use the watch as a navigator.

Their belonging to the class of watch-phones can be emphasized by the support of a SIM card, which works not only in GSM networks, but also supports 3G, which provides Internet access at fairly high speeds. There are two popular wireless interfaces for pairing with other devices: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Well, in addition, a whole list of fitness features, from a pedometer to a heart rate sensor.

KingWear KW88, which is not surprising, are more expensive than their counterparts - about 5500 rubles on AliExpress and GearBest. And the price is justified given the features. The only drawback of the watch may be autonomy - a 400 mAh battery is simply not enough for all the components.

LEMFO LF18

The Chinese company Lemfo has repeatedly surprised buyers with quite high-quality ones, which at the same time attracted them with their affordable price. Recently the lineup replenished with the LF18 solution - a smart watch in a classic design with support for SIM-cards and a heartbeat sensor.

  • case material is metal, the strap is made of silica gel
  • 1.3-inch oval display with a resolution of 240x240 pixels
  • energy efficient processor MTK2502C
  • 64 MB RAM
  • 128 MB of permanent memory + expandable by TF cards with a maximum capacity of 16 GB
  • Bluetooth for pairing the watch with a smartphone
  • 340 mAh battery
  • pedometer, sleep monitoring, long immobility reminder, heart rate sensor, calorie counting, etc.

The stylish design of the LEMFO LF18 case complements the beautiful and user-friendly interface. There are really a lot of functions: here is a calculator, and remote control smartphone, of course, receiving notifications. The SIM card is inserted into a special tray, only GSM connection is supported, 3G is not announced, and there are no tools for accessing the Internet. I have an opportunity voice control, which allows you to very quickly make, for example, a reminder of an upcoming meeting.

Watch-phone from LEMFO is accompanied by a high-quality application that opens additional features. You can’t complain about the accuracy of the sensors: they measure the pulse and count the steps no worse than the closest analogues. But the battery, like most competitors on the same platform, runs out quickly, especially if you use a watch with a SIM card. Be that as it may, the LEMFO LF18 is an interesting copy that is worth the 3,000 rubles that sellers on AliExpress demand for it.

№1 G8

At the beginning of summer, the number 1 company, quite well-known in the market, expanded its own line of smartwatches. Few users have managed to evaluate the G8 (the model has just appeared in online stores), but the declared characteristics at a price of 2000 rubles are conducive to purchase. Adding to the optimism is the success of previous watches from #1, which managed to offer high quality, nice design and a decent set of features.

  • case material is metal, the straps, available in four colors, are made of rubber
  • typical oval display with a diagonal of 1.3 inches and a resolution of 240x240 pixels
  • MTK2502 processor, beloved by manufacturers of budget Smart Watches
  • minimum RAM and permanent memory: 32 MB
  • Bluetooth version 4.0 for pairing with Android and iOS devices
  • 300 mAh battery
  • heart rate sensor, pedometer, sleep monitoring, calorie counting, blood pressure measurement

No. 1 G8 is declared by the manufacturer as a smart watch 3 in 1. The first thing they are ready to offer the user is the watch mode, that's amazing. The second mode is already more interesting - G8 as a fitness bracelet. Finally, the watch can play the role of a phone - nano-SIM support is announced. They can only work in 2G networks, and in phone mode, you should not expect that the G8 will live for more than three days.

Very pleased with the presence of a heart rate monitor, and not anyhow. The company points to the use of a sensor, as in Xiaomi's well-known Mi Band 2 bracelet, which should ensure high measurement accuracy. In addition, the characteristics declare the possibility of changing blood pressure - it is still difficult to say how efficient it will be. And, of course, a watch-phone can be friends with a smartphone.

No. 1 G8 can now be bought for 2000 rubles on AliExpress or GearBest. Some sellers in honor of the start of sales may provide a small discount. It is difficult to predict the success of the novelty, but given the popularity of the company's other products, failure is unlikely.

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen! Wearable electronics are quickly being introduced into everyday life, taking over the minds of ordinary users and emptying our wallets. How to choose the right device? But choose so that the future purchase brings its owner only positive emotions! In this article, we will talk about how to choose different wearable electronics, namely smart watches or as some people call "smart watches" and fitness bracelets. This article will be a kind of assistant when choosing a particular device.

If I had been told a few years ago that I would have a gadget indistinguishable in appearance from a conventional electronic watch, which can be used to: make calls, access the Internet, play, listen to music, measure the pulse, etc., then I would said that this person takes me for an idiot. But these are the realities and I would like to state that this person would have been right, and I would have been an idiot ... that I did not believe him.

My first acquaintance with wearable electronics happened quite a long time ago, namely back in 1999. Well, how's the introduction? I just saw this device only in a store window. The gadget was called Samsung SPH-WP10.

This is what it looked like in real life...

In fact, it was the first attempt to create something unique and unusual. Samsung SPH-WP10 is the first, and still one of the few watch-phones. The device, inspired by science fiction films, was announced in 1999. Of course, by modern standards, this gadget is very bulky (its thickness was 2 cm + antenna protruding from the side, and its weight was 50 g), but at that time it was the smallest and lightest “wireless terminal”. But let's not go deep into the past, but let's talk about how things are now with wearable electronics ...

In the beginning, we will talk about what software smart watch is working. The most common watch operating system at the moment is Google's Android Wear. The vast majority of hours on the market work on Android Wear.

ANDROID WEAR

Android Wear is an operating system for various wearable electronics, presented by Google at the Google I / O 2014 forum. It is designed for various wearable gadgets and smart watches. Smart watches LG G Watch, Samsung Gear Live and Motorola Moto 360 were the first to be presented on this OS. In the future, Google is going to actively develop its OS for wearable devices.

Android Wear is compatible with both square and round watch displays.

In August 2015, Google announced the release of a special mobile application for smartphones running operating system iOS systems, thanks to which any smart watch based on Android Wear can be synchronized with the iPhone. Undoubtedly, this step on the part of Google deserves only praise.

For full-fledged work and synchronization of smart watches on Android Wear, we need to download the Android Wear application of the same name from Play Store. The largest number of applications and various watch faces, plus extensive customization of the appearance of your smart watch - this is Android Wear.

As can be seen from the description, Android Wear is a fairly versatile and promising OS for mobile electronics.

TIZEN OS

OS Tizen (read as "Teizen") as well as android given OS is developed on the basis of Linux and can function on smartphones and tablets, as well as on computers. Currently, this OS is quite actively developed and developed. Soon, we will probably become unwitting witnesses to the moment when iOS and Android will have to make some room in the mobile OS market in order to provide a place for a newcomer in the face of Tizen in the wearable electronics market. In the name "Tizen" there is a phrase from "Tie" (connection), activity from "Rise" (rise) and meditation from "Zen" (Zen).

On February 23, 2014, two new branches of the Tizen system were introduced - for smart TVs and wearable gadgets. Initially, the platform for wearable gadgets was called Tizen Mobile Micro, later the name was changed to Tizen Wearable.

On September 3, 2014, at the IFA exhibition in Germany, the third generation of smart watches from Samsung was announced - the Gear S model on Tizen.

Until recently, the main drawback in Tizen OS was the fact that smartwatches on Tizen OS itself were only compatible with Samsung smartphones. By the way, smart watches on Tizen OS are released so far only by Samsung itself. But with the release of a new smart watch called "Gear S2", the situation has changed for the better. Now Gear S2 works on most smartphones with Android OS 4.4 and above. The main advantage of smart watches on Tizen OS is more advanced specifications. And the Gear S smart watch has the ability to install a SIM card and even these smart watches have a built-in speaker and microphone, which makes them completely independent of the smartphone.

For the full operation of smart watches on Tizen OS, you will need a proprietary application from Samsung called "Samsung Gear". If this application is not in your smartphone, then it can be downloaded from the Galaxy Apps application store.

WATCH OS

Watch OS is an operating system developed by Apple to run on the Apple Watch. First released April 24, 2015. Watch OS supports apps developed with WatchKit. The main menu of the system is made in the form of Carousel, which provides convenient access to any application. At first, the system allowed Apple's wearable gadget to be only a companion for applications running on the iPhone, but at the WWDC conference, applications were presented that could work on the Apple Watch independently of the phone.

Please note that the Apple Watch only works with Apple smartphones. And without the smartphone itself, these smart watches are simply useless.

PEBBLE OS

Smart watches from Pebble use their own developments on the FreeRTOS OS. FreeRTOS is a multitasking real-time operating system (RTOS) for embedded systems. Ported to 35 microprocessor architectures. Distributed under a modified GPL license with an exception that allows the developer to appropriate the modified operating system code. The add-on above it is called Pebble OS and this is the only implementation of this system at the moment. By and large, there is no information about Pebble OS as such.

The main advantage of smart watches from Pebble is a long time battery life, thanks to Sharp's Memory LCD screen. This screen is black and white, and more recently also in color. Do not confuse this technology with eInk screens, only the appearance is common.

Also, smart watches from Pebble are fully compatible with apple products, which is a huge plus. Of course, with smartphones on Android OS, these smart watches work perfectly.

The app store deserves special attention. It already has a huge number of different dials and programs. In terms of content, this app store bypasses Samsung's GearApps and is second only to Android Wear.

Smart watches from lesser-known manufacturers stand apart. Smart watch brands such as: DEXP, Belsis, Bizzaro, CooKooWatch, teXet, etc. run on their own OS. The consequence of this approach is usually the lack of an application store for the smart watch itself. Simply put, we will not be able to download additional watch face skins or various applications into smart watches. Such smartwatches usually have very few watch faces to choose from and few different installed apps, and we will be left with what the manufacturer himself offered us.

PROTECTION AGAINST EXTERNAL FACTORS

Since we started talking about wearable electronics, I think it's worth talking about how manufacturers protect their products. This paragraph of the article applies to smart watches and fitness bracelets.

The IP rating (Ingress Protection, input protection) was introduced by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC-International Electrotechnical Commission). The rating consists of two numbers and determines the ability of a particular gadget to resist the penetration of solid particles and liquids. The first digit indicates the level of protection against the ingress of dust and other solid particles, the second digit indicates the level of protection against the ingress of liquids.

In these screenshots, you can see how the protection level is distributed.

The first digit indicates protection against solid particles.

The second digit indicates protection against moisture.

As a rule, the manufacturer indicates on the packaging whether the smart watch is protected or not. Sometimes such information is placed on the back of the smart watch case. For example, smart watches from Samsung, Sony, Pebble can be completely submerged in water. But let's say LG or Asus still do not recommend completely immersing their products in the aquatic environment, but you can wash your hands in a smart watch or accidentally get caught in the rain.

WEARABLE DEVICE FORM FACTOR

Most smartwatches on the market are round in shape, which is understandable, the classics are always in fashion. Alcatel, Samsung, LG, Motorola - release smart watches in this form factor. The first smart watch on Android Wear was released by Motorola and they were called "Moto 360". A smart watch in a round design on the hand looks like an ordinary mechanical watch and does not particularly give itself away in appearance.

The second popular form factor is the smart watch with a square screen. These watches are produced by: Asus, Bizzaro, Dexp, Pebble, Sony, Apple, Texet, and other manufacturers. Of course, before buying a smart watch, you can come to the store and try on the device on your hand. In turn, smart watches in a square design look like ordinary ones. Digital Watch.

It seems to me that smart watches in a round and square case are suitable for those who do not want to stand out in appearance or are not ready to use a non-standard gadget.

Personally, I don’t particularly like smart watches in round and square designs. All my life I have worn round mechanical and square electronic watches, and you know given form already bored and want some novelty in appearance. And for such lovers of everything unusual, Samsung launches a smart watch called "Gear S". This device has a rectangular shape, and the screen itself is quite curved and follows the shape of your wrist. Such a smart watch is certainly unique and attracts the views of others, I recommend it for purchase.

Fitness bracelets, in turn, are more compact in size, which is understandable, since a massive gadget on the arm in some cases can interfere with sports. The most common shape in fitness bracelets is a rectangle or a small oval. In second place is a circle, but there are few such fitness bracelets on sale.

Often, manufacturers even produce fitness bracelets, which seem to consist of one bracelet. I like the last option more, since the device is compact and practically does not feel on the hand.

STRAP AND BRACELETS

In fact, there are not so many materials from which the manufacturer makes straps / bracelets for their devices. Basically, it is silicone, metal and leather.

Let's consider each material separately.

LEATHER STRAP

Already from the name it is clear that this material is premium in the manufacture of the strap. Leather is usually used only by well-known companies such as LG or Asus. Less well-known manufacturers may use a leather substitute. Of course, a leather strap in a smart watch looks solid and rich, and, accordingly, smart watches with such a strap are more expensive.

The leather strap has several drawbacks, the material wears out quite quickly and loses its presentation. And of course, you should not wet the leather strap, as frequent immersion in the input adversely affects the skin itself. For the same reason, you will not find leather-wrapped fitness bracelets for sale.

As a rule, leather straps have a standard 20 mm. the strap and, if desired, the strap itself can be bought at any watch store and changed independently. These straps have latches that are brought out to the outside, which makes changing the strap more convenient and simple.

From personal experience, I’ll say that I don’t particularly like smart watches with leather straps, as the appearance is quickly lost and often the dressing of the leather itself can be quite rough. This situation happened to me with the smart watch LG Watch Urbane. The leather in the strap was very thick and rough, the strap rubbed the hand.

METAL BRACELET

First of all, I will say that metal bracelets that are installed in smart watches also usually have a standard fastening width of 20 mm. Accordingly, we can change bracelets to any others. You can change the metal bracelet to a leather strap and vice versa.

But not all metal bracelets can be exchanged for any other. For example, Sony launches smart watch SmartWatch 3 where the metal strap is combined with a frame for the gadget itself. Therefore, we can only change the bracelet for the original one.

Smart watches with a metal bracelet, as you understand, can be safely immersed in water, nothing will happen to the metal.

Well, in itself, metal bracelets also look expensive and presentable. Plus, the metal adds a pleasant heaviness to the wearable gadget and such smart watches look very impressive on the hand.

SILICONE OR RUBBER

And of course, the most popular material in the manufacture of straps is a special type of rubber or silicone. Smart watches with such straps are usually cheaper than analogues in leather or metal design.

Smart watches with such straps can also be safely submerged in water, such material is ideal for the aquatic environment. And of course, all fitness bracelets are available with such straps. When we play sports, we actively move and, as a result, we sweat. After training, we rinsed the smart watch or fitness bracelet in water and that's it, no problem!

But smartwatches with such straps have one significant point. As a rule, such straps cannot be exchanged for metal or leather, there is no corresponding 20 mm. mounts.

A good example is the smart watch Samsung Gear S and Gear S2.

With rare exceptions, the smart watch manufacturer itself can produce interchangeable straps, but this happens quite rarely, and it is quite problematic to find such straps on sale.

SMART WATCH FUNCTIONALITY

Here we come to the most important point of this article. So why do you still need a smart watch? Is it a useful gadget or just an expensive and worthless toy?

The main purpose of a smart watch is to supplement the functions of your smartphone, and in some cases completely replace the smartphone itself.

But how can a smart watch fully replace a smartphone? Yes, very easy! There are such smart watches in which you can install a full-fledged SIM card. Such gadgets are produced by Samsung, Bizzaro, and recently Oukitel announced similar smart watches. By installing a SIM card in such gadgets, you can completely abandon a bulky smartphone. After such a simple procedure, the smart watch turns into a full-fledged smartphone on your hand.

A smart watch with a SIM card has a built-in speaker and microphone, therefore, we can talk to a subscriber through such a smart watch, but keep in mind that others around you can become a witness to your conversation. In such cases, you can use a BT headset or transfer the conversation to the smartphone itself.

A smart watch with a SIM card, a microphone and a speaker is very helpful when you are driving. You can answer a call and carry on a conversation without being distracted from the traffic situation.

Now I will talk about the main functions of smart watches.

Please note that Android Wear watches do not have a built-in speaker and you will not be able to fully talk on such a gadget.

The built-in microphone in this case serves for voice control of the smart watch itself. You can call the desired subscriber by voice command, receive a call, open the gallery or the desired item in the watch.

When you synchronize your smart watch and smartphone via BT connection, we get access to the contents of your smartphone.

So on the screen of the smart watch, the list of contacts of your smartphone is duplicated, through the list itself you can select the desired subscriber and make a call, but in this case we will only talk through the smartphone.

There comes a cold period and in the cold it is sometimes problematic to get a smartphone out of warm clothes, and with the help of a smart watch, which is always on hand, we can see who is calling and whether it is worth answering the call at the moment. There is no way to answer, you can reject the call using a template SMS message.

Of course, absolutely any notifications or messages can come to your smart watch, be it WhatsApp, Viber, etc.

You can also send a full-fledged message from a smart watch, for these purposes a virtual keyboard is used.

A smart watch can act as a remote control for MP3 songs that are downloaded to your smartphone. The screen of the smart watch displays the name of the track, there is a rewind, stop and pause. You can also select the desired track from the general list.

Some models of smart watches have a full-fledged GPS module. So in Gear S you can fully use the navigation. Another GPS module is used to plot and track the route if you are walking or jogging.

Also, some smart watches have wifi module, you can use mobile internet browser, but as owner smart watch Gear S I will say that this is not convenient, yet the screen of a smart watch is too small for these purposes.

The smart watch screen can display the weather report that comes from the smartphone.

Many smart watches are equipped with built-in memory. You can download music directly to your gadget and listen through BT headphones. When you download a third-party player, your smartwatch can act as a portable video player.

Of course, all smart watches are a kind of gadget for sports. Smart watches have specialized software for these purposes. The smart watch can count the steps taken using the built-in accelerometer. Some models have a full-fledged heart rate sensor that actually measures your heart rate during workouts. With the help of these sensors, the smart watch also counts the calories burned, the distance traveled. Accordingly, if you are actively involved in sports, I advise you to purchase a smart watch or a fitness bracelet with a heart rate sensor. As a rule, the heart rate sensor is located on the back of the smart watch or fitness bracelet.

This is not all the functionality of a smart watch. If you have an application store, you can download just a huge number of different watch faces into your smart watch and thereby change the design of your gadget.

You need a calculator, a stopwatch, a timer, all this can be downloaded and installed on your watch. For example, there are apps that let you control your smartphone's camera remotely. You can also download various mini-games to smart watches and use them for entertainment.

In fact, there are a huge number of different applications and everyone can find what they need for themselves.

AUTONOMOUS WORK

The main scourge of smart watches at the moment is a short battery life. Batteries have a capacity of 100 to 420 mAh. Against the background of smartphones, this volume is certainly small. The average working time of a smart watch is 2-3 days. If you do not use an active BT connection, then battery life can be extended up to 4 days, but this is usually the maximum.

From the general list, smart watches from Pebble are knocked out. These smart watches work on average 5-7 days. merit in this good optimization, black and white screen, no speaker and microphone, energy is essentially spent only on the BT connection. When BT is turned off, these smart watches can even work up to 20 days.

Fitness bracelets for battery life are approximately equal to smart watches. But there is a fitness bracelet from Jawbone called "UP Move" this fitness bracelet uses a CR2032 battery, the battery life with such a battery increases to 180 days, but this is an exception to the rule.

CONCLUSIONS

I hope this article will help the average consumer to make the right choice. Personally, I have already made a choice for myself in favor of smart watches. By the way, there are excellent mechanical watches at home, which are covered with a thick layer of dust. It's just that smart watches give me something that ordinary watches cannot give.

Let me finish with this, good luck to everyone and see you soon!
