Samsung Tab tablet 2 known diseases. The radio of the mobile device is a built-in FM receiver

In 2010, which is quite distant by the standards of the current mobile industry, Samsung opened a line of 7-inch tablets. We even published a review of this device, coming to a mixed conclusion. Then Samsung produced one of the best Android tablets at that time, but in comparison with the iPad it was inferior in almost all respects, including cost.

Over time, the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and the flagship Galaxy Tab 7.7 were introduced to the market. The end of May was marked by the appearance in the CIS of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 model, which can be considered an intermediate link between budget tablets and flagship offerings.

If the first Tab with a 3G module cost an exorbitant amount of about 27-28 thousand, then the current model with a 3G module will cost no more than 13 thousand. Samsung explains such a radical reduction in cost by the fact that in 2010 it was just beginning to test the production of tablets. And as a result, she was forced to bear high production costs. However, this comment does not carry much value in light of the fact that the stated price is normal (i.e. competitive) for a 7-inch tablet PC with the characteristics of the Tab 2.

Design

The Tab 2 cannot boast of a memorable appearance. In our opinion, the exterior of the tablet turned out to be too faceless - there is nothing to catch the eye. However, on the other hand, there is nothing to complain about; we are dealing with a thin profile and small stylish buttons.

There is a small speaker grill just above the screen in the center. It is also found in previous models of the line. This solution does not look entirely successful, since a priori it evokes an association with a large phone. Apparently Samsung intends to use the tablet as a complete replacement for a smartphone or regular phone, but doesn’t quite understand the appropriateness of having a 7-inch device next to the ear. To be fair, we note that the device also has “regular” speakers.

However, let’s not quibble and take the tablet in our hands. In the palms of the hand, the impression of the model improves dramatically, which is facilitated by a more than acceptable weight of 345 grams. In any case, even girls should not have problems holding the Tab 2 7.0 with one hand. The thin thickness of the case is accompanied by the absence of clear right angles on the sides. Therefore, discomfort from parts of the body resting on the palm is not felt, giving way to an ergonomic design.

Considering the quality of workmanship, it should be noted that we have a pre-sale sample of the tablet. Apparently that is why in the lower part, in the corners between the body and the lid, gaps were clearly visible. In commercial versions of Tab 2 they are removed. However, we cannot say with the same confidence that Samsung has also eliminated the slight but quite noticeable flex of the back cover. After testing, which had the same problem a little more pronounced, I wanted to get a more worthy answer from Samsung.

Execution materials are another controversial point. While the glass of the front panel does not cause any complaints, the plastic of the lid does not look or feel very presentable.

We were provided with the tablet along with a soft dermantine case. We don’t know whether one can be found on sale, since the tablet is still very new. But, we believe, this will cost around a thousand rubles.

Connectors and controls

After Google released Android 3.x, it was possible to almost accurately determine which version of the system was installed on the tablet. Budget followers of Android 2.2/2.3 continued to demonstrate a row of touch buttons under the screen, while Android 3.x owners were deprived of them. Android 4.0 retained the approach of having all the additional buttons on the system panel, so there are no buttons on the front panel of the Tab 2.

Instead, in the upper part in the center there is the already mentioned speaker, covered with a fine mesh, as well as light and distance sensors. At the bottom there is only the name of the manufacturer.

Card slots are located on the left side microSD memory and SIM cards. Our attempt to install a SIM card failed - it successfully fell inside and strongly recommended contacting service center. By the way, all connectors contain plugs, which is a very useful point - no matter where the tablet is stored, dust and dirt will not clog into the connectors.

On the right side there is a place for dual volume control keys and an on/off button. They are raised above the body, fit comfortably under the index finger and are pressed without difficulty.

At the top end there is only a 3.5 mm output for a headset or headphones.

The lower part of the tablet is interesting because there are speaker slots on both sides. Note that they produce good volume and sound quality, as far as possible for a tablet form factor. In the center there is a 30-pin connector for connecting to a computer or connecting to a charger.

On the back cover we see only the Samsung inscription and the camera peephole on the left top corner. Along the way, we note that the Tab 2 does not have a flash.

In our case, the tablet arrived for testing “as is,” so we didn’t get to see its full package in person.

Screen

The 7-inch display offers a resolution of 1024x600 pixels, which is now becoming more or less the standard for such a diagonal, instead of the obsolete 800x480 pixels. The pixel density is 169 ppi. Of course, the display is capacitive, with multi-touch support and up to 10 simultaneous touches inclusive. Samsung's arsenal of screens allows the company to "maneuver" depending on the cost of the tablet. Tab 2 received a PLS matrix of its own production.

In terms of its properties, it seemed to us practically indistinguishable from IPS variations. However, it was not without both positive and negative features. An unpleasant surprise was the lack of sufficiently deep blacks, which is especially noticeable in films with dark scenes. However, the measured contrast was 947:1, which is not too bad. And the black level at 100% brightness was only 0.41 cd/m2. Here, apparently, the disadvantage of PLS played a role, which manifests itself in a purple tint of black when looking at the screen at an angle.

But the overall excellent brightness of the display serves as compensation. At first it even seemed to us that the value was set to maximum, but no - the slider was only halfway down the line. Accordingly, in the sun the color image is clearly visible. The brightness of the white point on the screen is 388 cd/m2 - above average.

At the same time, it’s worth stocking up on a cloth in advance to wipe the glass coating, which quickly collects fingerprints. The viewing angles of the Tab 2 are another specific highlight of the tablet. They are quite large, but even with a small deviation both vertically and horizontally, a barely noticeable gray “film” begins to appear.

As for the color temperature, the Tab 2 showed a smooth graph without “blockages”; almost along the entire length it goes close to the reference value. For comparison, you can look at ours to see the difference between high-quality PLS and budget TFT.

With gamma curves everything is even better; the line almost does not deviate from the reference one. Only in the upper part is some disproportion visible, indicating a slight overexposure of the picture.

Camera

The tablet has two cameras, which allows us to take more or less high-quality pictures and make video calls over the Internet. The rear camera has three megapixels, the maximum shooting resolution is 2048x1536 pixels. The front camera is perceived purely with the “web” prefix due to the presence of only 0.3 megapixels.

Despite the fact that we are dealing with Android 4.0, no matter how hard we try, some innovations are invisible, which is certainly more likely to be the fault of the limited capabilities of the front camera.

It doesn't even have autofocus, let alone an LED flash. It doesn’t make much sense to talk about the shooting settings, since they basically duplicate what could be seen at least in . Only for Tab 2 the number of options has been cut almost in half.

After a depressing set of settings, the quality of the resulting images turned out to be surprisingly acceptable. Before we got acquainted with the characteristics of the tablet, it seemed that the model had a 5-megapixel camera. In any case, if you don’t have a point-and-shoot device at hand, the Tab 2 will not be the worst replacement for shooting.

The rear camera had no surprises; it turned out to be especially sensitive to poor lighting.

Characteristics

The new Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 will have to compete with relatively inexpensive Chinese solutions like Huawei MediaPad.

The hardware looks quite powerful. The dual-core processor has become almost a standard feature of tablets in the mid-price segment. The number of processor cores has never been used as a measure of performance on Android since the advent of Tegra 2 due to poor software and hardware optimization. With the advent of Tegra 3 the situation has changed little.

RAM is present in the proper amount - 1 GB. 16 GB of storage space is enough for a small multimedia collection, including a couple of HD movies. In addition, you can install a memory card up to 32 GB, creating 48 GB of storage.

In terms of wireless networks, the Tab 2 is in perfect order - it also supports the ability to talk in cellular networks, and 3G, and the full arsenal of 802.11b/g/n. I was also pleased with Bluetooth version 3.0. The lack of NFC is not particularly upsetting, since the technology is not yet very widespread in the CIS.

Regarding the battery capacity, the stated 4000 mAh seems to be the optimal choice for a 7-inch tablet with a high resolution. The Tab 2 does not show miracles of battery life; charging, depending on the tasks performed, does not show miracles of battery life and allows the tablet to function for 5-8 hours.

If we compare it with Huawei MediaPad, which seems to be the closest competitor, then the choice is far from the most obvious. Most of the characteristics are the same; the advantage of the Huawei model is expressed in a slightly more powerful processor and “honest” IPS. But it has outdated Bluetooth 2.1 and weighs 41 grams more. Finally, Huawei is not yet famous for its software add-ons.

Performance testing

It was decided to check the actual performance in comparison with the already familiar PocketBook A7", which has a single-core 1 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM and a weaker graphics processor. Let's see how much the Tab 2 actually lives up to the superiority of its characteristics.

SmartBench 2011 started with an almost devastating difference. Apparently, the test managed to make the most of the multi-core processor of the Samsung tablet, as well as its RAM. Accordingly, the 4-fold superiority is obvious. The 2012 edition turned out to be not so categorical. The 4x advantage remains in overall performance, but gaming capabilities they are no longer so noticeably behind. Maybe the A7" graphics are not so low-power?

AnTutu again puts everything in its place, the difference in results turns out to be 2-4 times on all fronts. The only “abnormal” exception was 2D graphics. Apparently the PowerVR SGX 530 chip has far from obvious abilities.

The Linpack test is based on the computing ability of the processor, so expecting a more or less decent result from the A7" would be, to say the least, stupid.

A series of graphics tests dispelled doubts left after Smartbench 2012. The gap in all benchmarks was at least twofold, so A7" owners should not create illusions about performance compared to even such “average” tablets by today’s standards as the Tab 2.

The multi-core system has fully justified itself in JavaScript tests; the 4-5 times superiority fully and with a decent margin justifies the difference in characteristics between the tablets.

The PocketBook tablet gained about 25% in the battery life test, which can be explained by the trivially lower load of the system and programs on the battery. Still, the more limited the performance, the better it gets. autonomous operation devices. How much of an advantage this is is a completely different conversation. Autonomy test by AnTutu versions showed a slight difference, but we tend to trust our own practical measurement more.

In general, the superiority of the Tab 2 is fully justified by its more powerful processor and graphics chip - the overpayment for their capabilities is justified and really gives a multiple advantage over less powerful platforms.

Software (Android 4)

It is not difficult to guess that the device has Android 4.0 with the TouchWiz add-on. We hasten to immediately disappoint readers a little - a dual-core processor, as always, was not a guarantee of performance. This in no way means that the tablet is slow. On the contrary, it works quite quickly, but once again it was not possible to achieve the ideal.

Let's just say that there is no significant difference compared to single-core platforms. A striking example is the built-in image editing program, which clearly “reduces FPS” when working with effects. When several tasks are launched, and interactive wallpaper is installed in the background, 1 GB of memory and two 1 GHz cores remain only on paper in the tablet’s characteristics graphs.

If you are also already familiar with one of Samsung devices on Android based 3.x, then Android ICS with TouchWiz performed by Tab 2 will not be a revelation for you. Quite the contrary - the changes are mostly cosmetic in nature, it feels like we are dealing with a slightly improved and optimized Android 3.x. This is also expressed in programs; truly new developments can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Therefore, for a detailed tour of pre-installed applications, we send you to the “Screenshots” section.

The start menu greets us with the absence of a lock screen. It could not be found anywhere, including in the system settings. Feature of an industrial design? Maybe. So, on the main screen we see a set of programs in two rows, in the upper part there is a quick call to Google search, a display of the number of desktops and a transition to full list programs. On the bottom panel on the left is a standard set of virtual keys for Android ICS: return, go to the start menu, call the list running tasks and getting a screenshot.

A few words about the last point. Unlike ASUS Prime, the screenshot does not have a prominent white button in place of the capture key in the resulting photo. Samsung “compensated” for this advantage by the fact that after taking a photo, the system automatically opens it in the editor. It’s very “convenient” when you need to get a series of 100-200 screenshots.

By holding down the home button, we get a general idea of all available desktops, with the ability to delete current ones and add new ones.

At the bottom there is a pop-up panel with a list of programs for fast loading. It is not edited in any way.

There was a tray; in general, it is not very different from what we have already seen in Android 3.x.

The logic for choosing widgets and wallpapers is lame on both legs. By holding a touch on any screen, we get an add menu, from which it’s difficult to say what we’re being asked to do. The sequence of construction of phrases is also disappointing; the construction “Select wallpaper from the Home screen” is difficult to understand. Interestingly, in the English version of the interface the menu is no less pleasing.

There are surprisingly few wallpapers available, but the pictures chosen are extremely attractive. There were also interactive wallpapers.

The selection of widgets is quite large, although it was not a revelation - there are gadgets for all major programs.

The list of preinstalled programs is not that small, but it is too familiar to us from previous Samsung devices. On the other hand, this is a more than sufficient set for the average user.

The list of new or changed programs, as we have already said, is extremely modest. Nevertheless, let's go through them. First in line is the most powerful office suite Polaris Office.

The tablet has a new version, which has a radically different interface from what we saw in the Galaxy S II. Firstly, the menu has changed visually. It notifies us that the program has learned to support cloud services.

In our case, synchronization with Google Drive took place without problems.

The built-in file manager has undergone changes; it has become much more convenient and functional. The top panel allows you to instantly create a new file, add a new folder, change the order of files, and search.

In the editor text documents The editing options panel is now located in the upper right corner. It is called after selecting a piece of text. The visual presentation of the settings is beyond praise - they are divided into bookmarks and are intuitive.

The situation is similar with the table editor.

The creation of slides has also undergone changes for the better, the settings are organized more clearly.

The Pulse program looks very interesting. This is a creative look at organizing your own RSS feed, but not with a dry text list, but with a kind of mini-site. The idea is to install news feeds of information sites in the line. That is, on the first line we read the Wall Steet Journal, on the second we look at the Popular Mechanics summary, etc.

Moreover, sets of tapes are presented in the form of “working” tables. So on one we can store fashion tapes, on the second - technology. In general, real Web 2.0 in all its glory.

The calendar has been updated, although it’s impossible to note anything truly noteworthy. For each day, you can set different tasks to complete, with the ability to synchronize between your devices.

Samsung Apps has been visually retouched. Application organization has improved, but dark background doesn't look good best choice for service.

The system's alarm clock left a good impression, largely due to the compact and efficient layout of the settings.

The Samsung video player has undergone minor functional improvements. A large list of options appears by clicking on the button in the upper right corner; options such as selecting subtitles and setting playback speed are available. However, the proportions of the panels called up during viewing are poorly chosen - they take up half the screen in total, although they are translucent.

Not without the task manager, which allows you to close a separate running application or clear the entire list of running programs at once. It is possible to sort processes according to different parameters.

The system browser is still good looking. In comparison with what was seen, only its color palette has changed.

The music player, as befits a program of its category, has many options for filtering and organizing song lists. An equalizer and playback controls are available from the system tray.

It’s difficult to come up with anything truly new with telephone functions, so we work with the familiar dialing or messaging interface, as well as the contact log.

To improve communication capabilities, the ChatON client is pre-installed. It is a comprehensive chat solution for paired or group conversations and file sharing. In general, a typical IM client.

The Game Hub service has undergone a strange change. Previously, it provided access to a variety of Gameloft games with the option to download and play for free during the demo period. Now all that’s left of it is some vague application that simply redirects us to Google Play.

The World Time program looks truly original. It contains a three-dimensional globe, which displays different cities, which can be used to find out the time in different time zones.

In conclusion, we repeat what was said above - there are no special innovations for those who are familiar with past Samsung Android-based products. At the same time, the company continued its policy of supplying its developments with the maximum amount necessary programs"from the box".

Conclusion

The positioning of the Tab 2 looks like a completely successful attempt by Samsung to present a tablet capable of meeting all the most current requirements for this type of device. In any case, the model has all the features that distinguish it from typical budget tablets.

The quality of the picture is ensured by the sun-resistant and high-quality PLS display, which in fact does not seem like a compromise in comparison with IPS. The dual-core processor is more than enough for both basic and demanding tasks. In the end, manufacturers have not yet been able to convincingly prove the need for quad-core platforms. The 3G module is not an exclusive thing at all, but with it the user will not depend on a Wi-Fi connection.

The design of the tablet does not have any notable features, but due to the small thickness of the case it still looks attractive. The only let down were the case assembly and the unpresentable plastic of the back cover. I would also like to see Gorilla Glass protective coating in the Tab 2.

Price

The cost of a model with a 3G module is about 13 thousand. We learn whether this is a lot or a little in comparison with the offers of competitors. The main parameters for searching for rivals were the presence of a 3G module and a 7-inch screen with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels. This is Huawei MediaPad, Acer Iconia Tab A101 and Explay MID-725.

You can now buy a Huawei MediaPad for 12,000 rubles. We made a more or less direct comparison with the Tab 2 in the characteristics section. The difference in price fully covers possible shortcomings of the tablet.

Acer Iconia Tab A101 will cost 12,500-13,000 rubles. It is built on the basis of NVIDIA Tegra 2, but is unpleasantly surprised by the presence of a TN+Film matrix, which is unacceptable for such an expensive tablet.

Finally, Explay MID-725 has only 4 GB of memory for data storage, but also costs only 8,000 rubles. True, the characteristics of the Tab 2 are sky-high - a single-core 1.2 GHz processor, Android 2.3, 512 MB of RAM and a TFT screen. A moment of humor, let’s appreciate the flight of thought from one of the Russian online stores: “Explay MID-725 almost completely repeats the capabilities of the one promoted on the market iPad tablet, at the same time, it has something to brag about over Apple products.”

In general, compared to its competitors, the Tab 2 does not look like the best tablet, but it is quite worthy of a buyer’s choice.

Pros:

  • high-quality PLS screen;
  • thin body;
  • light weight;
  • 3G support;
  • the ability to expand memory with microSD cards;
  • productive hardware platform;
  • Android 4 with TouchWiz shell;
  • high quality rear camera.

Minuses:

  • fingerprints quickly accumulate on the screen;
  • the back cover bends;
  • the system is poorly optimized.

Review of the Samsung P3100 tablet.

Good model

Tablet use experience: more than a year

Advantages of the tablet:

Convenient size and weight. You can carry it with you everywhere, it will fit into almost any bag, or even into the back pocket of jeans.
- Good support, updated to the latest. ( latest firmware 4.2.2)
- Workmanship. I’ve been using it every day for 2 years, the plastic has not worn out anywhere (I mostly use it in a case, but a friend has the same one without a cover for a year and a half, there are no wear marks).
- The films are excellent.
- Full phone functionality. You can call from a SIM card without any problems.
- Volume. Excellent. There’s nothing to add here; the volume reserve is superior to many analogues.

Disadvantages of the tablet:

Screen. In general it is good, but TFT technology makes itself felt. At medium brightness it fades quite a bit in the sun. I always put film on the screen, the surface feels very soft.
- No flash. On the first tab the camera was better.
- Original charging connector. You always need to carry a charging cable with you.
- The actual charging process itself. It is very reluctant to charge from a computer; the time to fully charge is 2.5 times longer (compared to charging from a wall outlet). It’s hard to find a charger for your car; many either don’t charge at all, or provide only enough charge so that the tablet doesn’t run out of charge. (There is a point here. I use it as a navigator in the car, so these indicators are typical for fairly heavy use.)

Comment about the tablet:

I use the tablet every day and have no thoughts of changing it to anything else. I download movies into it, make calls (using a headset), navigate in the car, and various games. Everything works without glitches or any problems. The size is perfect for me.
I owned the first Galaxy tab, and I can say that the power here was slightly reduced. Some games don't want to launch.
Watched updated version galaxy tab 3 7.0, the tablets turned out to be on the same level, so there is no point in changing.
The thing is not the most modern, but it more than fully satisfies my needs.

Review No. 2 about the Samsung P3100 tablet.

Great model

Tablet use experience: several months

Advantages of the tablet:

The price is definitely an advantage.
The size is convenient.
screen, sensor – I was satisfied.
The battery is, in short, good. For more details, see comments.
Housing – see comments. I don’t rate it, because I immediately dressed it in a “book”.
The hardware is generally good, see the comments.
The native interface, not counting the native launcher, is very convenient. Satisfied.
Internet Wi-Fi, if there is one, is quite decent. 3g be healthy too - from SIM card MTS up to 4 Mbit/sec.
GPS is generally good. I haven't tried it on a third-party navigator.

Disadvantages of the tablet:

I’ll start with the classics of the genre - after a month of use, the device began to lose the presence of a SIM card. That is, it says that it is not registered on the network, there is no Internet (I often use the Internet via a SIM card). It can be cured by rebooting the device. This problem arose literally 2 times, but it was unpleasant.
Built-in memory. Only 4.5 GB available for use. A little. It is absolutely clear that you need to install a micro sd, and a larger one. I don’t know about the impossibility of installing applications on the card; I haven’t tried it myself.
Camera. It's about taste and color. I don’t use it practically, but it’s absolutely clear that the manufacturer saved money on this part of the device.
Wire included. It’s convenient that the cord for connecting to a computer turns into a charger, but why couldn’t it be possible to make a standard USB input at the opposite end? Inconvenient. But if you always have this cord with you, everything is quite convenient. However, this reduces the versatility of the device. It is not possible to find such a lace everywhere.
Performance. The native launcher looks good, but it slows down. I installed it from a third party and don’t worry. Nothing is buggy.
Speakers. The playback quality is acceptable, but why the hell place stereo speakers next to each other... well, it’s not very smart somehow.
connectors for flash drive and SIM card. Everything is convenient, but if there is a need to change cards often, it will soon fall off. Although you can go the opposite way: don’t touch it often - it will last forever.
In general, that's all)

Real reviews about the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.7 tablet

Ilya

  • Working with Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.7.0 P3100 8Gb is bliss, because... After a month of use, I’m very happy with everything and I don’t even go near the computer. In addition, I am thinking of replacing the computer with an even more powerful and larger tablet of this series, but I still do not have enough programs to turn the tablet into a full-fledged personal computer. At first I bought it as an addition to my smartphone, because... The tablet supported SIM cards (in other words, I didn’t even consider SIM-less tablets). And I received not only an add-on, but a full-fledged car with the Internet, which is always with me! I have no complaints about the device at all, and the size and speed of its operation simply amazes me! True, the accessories for it are very expensive, but this is unnecessary. Therefore my rating is a solid 5.

Oleg

  • I like the tablet, but for a long time I carried it without a case in transport, but I realized that it was unreliable, and now I choose a book case. I like that you can use a memory card to download files (both using the slot and using a card reader, which can be bought at any computer store), as well as the quality of working with the Internet using Opera browser. I also think that this tablet is very fast, convenient, holds a charge for a long time (enough for almost a day), does not heat up or discharge in standby mode, is equipped with basic programs and even an archiver. True, not all computers recognize the device as a flash drive.
  • I took the purchase of the tablet seriously, because... a lot of money... I looked closely for almost a month and finally decided on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.7.0 P3100 8Gb, because... with its help, I could always have 2 active SIM cards, and also had the opportunity to constantly surf the Internet. I think that this model is the ideal combination of quality and price, weight and size, battery performance and interface. The tablet justifies itself and does not look bulky, and on the screen with its resolution you can watch any movies and constantly surf the Internet.

  • I bought this model and have no regrets - the device itself is very cool, it’s easy to type text on it and it even fits in a jeans pocket. Run simultaneously various applications and tasks like HD video, a lot of programs and GPS navigation and the device copes with them, although it heats up a little. I really don't like the camera, because... the photos turn out creepy, but this is not a minus, because... I never understood why there are cameras in phones and tablets, if they can hardly compare even with a point-and-shoot camera... The WiFi in the tablet is excellent, the connection is not interrupted, and therefore I can call the device excellent for work.

  • If you are an illiterate person, then it will seem to you that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.7.0 P3100 8Gb has a “stainable” screen, an inconvenient keyboard in portrait mode, and it is impossible to remove standard applications, the sound of the tablet is not loud, the shell slows down, etc. But if you know at least a little about devices, you will understand that 8 GB of memory is enough for all applications and OS, the device supports memory cards - and this is a huge plus, all unused applications can be disabled, etc. I use the Galaxy Tab both as a tablet and as a phone and player, and so far there have been no complaints!
